ABOUT SRBLSA “The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think

intensively, and to think critically. . . Intelligence plus character--that

is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

Greetings! In 1968, on the campus of New York University Law School, Algernon Johnson (“A.J.”) Cooper responded to the need for continued educational encouragement, professional development and community enrichment for Black law students. Mr. Cooper founded the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), a non-profit organization, which currently serves nearly 6,000 student members worldwide. For nearly 45 years, NBLSA has been a valuable resource in addressing the educational needs and goals of minority law students, while encouraging their professional advancement and fostering meaningful relationships with Black attorneys, and other legal professionals. SRBLSA’s 2012 - 2013 theme is "The YBE Movement: Young, Bold, & Empowered." As student leaders, we understand that we have a unique opportunity to significantly impact many different aspects of society. We plan to empower our region by educating our youth, and by serving our community. Specifically, our programming will center around educational outreach, community investment, election law issues, and career preparedness. We will begin our year by hosting the Regional Job Fair/ Leadership Retreat at Elon University School of Law in Greensboro, North Carolina. During the months of September and October, we will have Academic Retreats and Law Camps at five different law schools within the region. We will end the year in Nashville, Tennessee as we host our Annual Regional Convention January 30 - February 3, 2013 at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel in Nashville. Serving as a corporate sponsor is a great opportunity for you to become an active participant with SRBLSA. You will gain access to high caliber minority law students which will have a meaningful impact on your recruiting efforts. Moreover, sponsorship will highlight your commitment to diversity in the legal profession and encourage our members to pursue opportunities with your organization throughout their future legal careers. Our ultimate goal is to foster a long-lasting, mutually-beneficial relationship with you and your organization. Our Sponsor Guide includes some but not all of the benefits of becoming a featured SRBLSA Sponsor. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We look forward to your sponsorship and support. Best regards,

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS The Southern Region of the National Black Law Students Association (SRBLSA) is the largest of NBLSA's six regions with more than 40 chapters in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Below are the details of our regional programs.

EDUCATIONAL & CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING

Regional Convention | January 30 - February 3, 2013: Join us in Nashville, Tennessee for SRBLSA’s Annual Regional Convention. Our convention is the most anticipated regional event of the year. A combination of discussion panels, workshops, and networking events ensure that law students, professionals and sponsors alike get the most out of the experience.

Regional Career Fair/Leadership Retreat | August 24-25, 2012 Bringing together some of the best and brightest law students in the Southern Region, the Regional Career Fair/Leadership Retreat serves as a unique venue for employers to personally connect with our members. Each event will be an unrivaled opportunity for organizations committed to diversity and inclusion to make their presence felt, through both participation and sponsorship.

Academic Retreats: Targeted primarily at first year students, Academic Retreats are held in each of SRBLSA’s six sub-regions during the fall semester. Members receive crucial academic support and tips on maximizing their law school experience.

Regional Law Journals: SRBLSA is one of the few regions that produces a Law Journal Spring 2013. The Law Journal is a student-run publication and is an outlet for both talented law students and established professionals of all backgrounds to present their diverse perspectives on a range of relevant topics.

Community Service: SRBLSA’s community service projects this year include Founders Day/Regional Day of Service, Worlds AIDS Day Commemoration, MLK Day of Service, and other youth empowerment activities. In addition, SRBLSA’s regional chapters will participate in service projects geared toward prison reform/prison rehabilitation, such as the Innocence Project, felony disenfranchisement programs, and juvenile outreach programs.

LEGISLATIVE & JUDICIAL ADVOCACY

Lobby Day: Each year, SRBLSA hosts its Lobby Day training workshop in conjunction with legislative career panel discussions. Throughout the day, distinguished guest speakers enlighten students about the importance of getting involved in the legislative process.

Social Action Rallies: SBRLSA’s Social Action Rallies provide multiple opportunities for members to discuss social issues and become more involved in voter rights, election day poll work, and advocacy.
