The sixth annual Carta-gena International Mu-sic Festival marked a

great advancement in the de-velopment of the programs lead by the Salvi Foundation. Many of the initiatives that have taken place over the past six years, have reached a successful con-clusion, giving way to bigger and better projects that grow constantly with the support and commitment of the Foundation to its various causes. Today, the Festival is a unique and com-plex reality that has an effect on the cultural, social, econom-ic and touristic life of the city where it takes place, and more-over, it transcends to generate a positive impact throughout the entire country. • Artistic & Cultural IdentityThirty-seven concerts took place during the 2012 Cartage-na Music Festival. Eight of these concerts were orchestra con-certs, nineteen were chamber music, one was a choir concert, and three others were presen-tations of traditional repertoire from different American regions (Brazil, North America and Co-lombia). There were also two concerts only for master class students, three benefit concerts, one concert in the marginal ar-eas of Cartagena, and the tradi-tional “Young Talents” Concert which was presented by four prestigious South American musicians. As it is tradition dur-ing every Festival, this year we were proud to host the premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “La Pasión Según San Marcos” (The Passion according to Saint Marcus), one of the world’s most recognized contemporary pieces of South American composition. With “Music of the Americas” as this

year’s theme, the artistic pro-gram was comprised of more musical genres than any past Festival, and the artistic quality of the presentations was of the best and highest standard.

• Social Commitment One of the pillars on which the Salvi Foundation was built is the commitment to its sur-roundings, and the purpose of bringing the best available mu-sic to every corner of Colombia. With this in mind, three benefit concerts were held during the Festival to raise funds for some of the most vulnerable popula-tions of Cartagena and six con-certs were held in the Plaza de San Pedro, which were open to the public and completely free of charge.

• Technical Training OpportunitiesThe outstanding growth of the Festival has also required higher and greater technical require-ments for the production staff. Given the small experience that is found within this field, a team of Italian expert producers was hired to direct the production of every concert, and to instruct a group of six young Colombian producers that have the desire to develop professionally with-in this field. During the course of the Festival they worked hand in hand with the experts, gaining specific training in the various areas of production.

• The Festival as a Tourist AttractionCartagena is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful cit-ies in Colombia. It’s filled with unique historic sites, colonial architecture, and some of the best attractions a city can offer.

The location has become a de-finitive influence on the Fes-tival, which is why the Salvi Foundation carefully selects the sites where the concerts are to take place, appealing to all tastes with a selection of indoor and outdoor venues, all equally stunning. Concerts take place around the city in places such as the Chapel of the Santa Tere-sa and Santa Clara Hotels, The Plaza de San Pedro, The Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní, and the Cathedral, amongst others.

• Promotion and Development of the Country After six seasons, the Festival has become notorious for the multiple cultural activities it de-velops. The execution of all ini-tiatives and activities requires the synchronicity and integra-tion of various sectors. Through each season, the image of the Festival grows closer to the identity of the city of Cartage-na. Its culture, tradition, archi-tectural patrimony, urban con-text, and the sociability of the city represent the foundation on which the Festival has been built. The event draws atten-tion to the city and requires of its entire infrastructure to come together in order to provide the best experience available. The hotel, transportation, recre-ational and cultural sectors of the city come in high demand during the ten days of the Festi-val. As a result of this, the pub-lic has responded positively to the Festival, and it recognizes it as part of the cultural patrimony of the city, and the entire coun-try as well.

Praised as “one of the three emerging orchestras of the

world to pay attention to” by Gramophone Magazine, the Symphonic Orchestra of the State of São Paulo (better known as OSESP), became the first ever South American Orchestra to be invited to the Cartagena Music Festival.

Forty-four of its members traveled to Cartagena lead by conductor, Celso Antu-nes. Night after night, they performed together with the soloists and ensembles, a va-ried repertoire of American Music composed by Brazi-lian, Argentine, Venezuelan, and North American com-posers, as well as the classic European repertoire.

Blanca Uribe, Stephen Prust-man, Alexis Cárdenas, Lara St. John, Horacio Franco, Steven Copes, and Anne-Ma-rie McDermott were some of the soloists that performed alongside this amazing Or-chestra.

After having the pleasure of expe-riencing two of

the best choirs from Colom-bia, this year the Cartagena International Music Festival was proud to welcome the prestigious Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, under the tu-telage of María Guinand.

Founded in 1967 by Maestro Alberto Grau, the Schola Can-torum is a mixed voice choir that has grown into a praised artistic ensemble deserving of some of the most prestigious international awards and recognitions. The choir has performed under the direc-tion of distinguished national and international conductors such as José Antonio Abreu, Pablo Casals, Krzysztof Pen-derecki, Gustavo Dudamel, Roberto Spano, Sir Simon Rattle, and Claudio Abbado, amongst others.

For this year’s Festival, the Schola Cantorum de Venezue-la was a principal component of the “La Pasión” Orchestra, which performed the Colom-bian premiere of “La Pasión Según Marcos.” The Schola Cantorum also performed for the first time in the Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejan-dría, presenting a series of “Classics of the Americas,” a repertoire composed of piec-es by 20th and 21st-century American composers, includ-ing their founding director, Al-berto Grau.

The “La Pasión” Or-chestra was created with the sole objective

of presenting “La Pasión Según San Marcos” (The Passion Accord-ing to Saint Marcus) by Argentine composer, Osvaldo Golijov. The orchestra has a non-conventional format designed exclusively to account for the musical and cul-tural synchronism required by this particular piece. It is made up of musicians from around the world, each specialized in an instrument, a genre, and even a form of dance.

As part of the educational com-ponent of the Festival, the mem-bers of the orchestra offered master classes for trumpet, trom-bone, lyrical singing, and Afro-Cuban percussion. There were also collective classes for horns and winds and a lecture by pia-nist Gonzalo Grau titled “Latin Music Demystified.”

The Maracatu Nacao Pernambuco ensemble was created to give a bigger meaning and reach a larger audience

to the world of Maracatu. By recording albums, offering workshops, performing in traditional theater settings, or participating in festivals and street parades with 40 tympanums and 300 people, this ensemble has expanded the horizons of this traditional practice beyond its restricted participation in “Carnaval” settings only.

Today, Nação Pernambuco epitomizes the soul of the Pernambuco culture, original from Northeastern Brazil, and it emphasizes performing in an inclusive and interactive manner with the public.

At the end of its presentations, the entire musical cast shows the general public the Maracatu Court, one of the most beautiful, rich, and traditional popular manifestations of Brazil, and exclusive to the state of Pernambuco.

Sponsored by Ecopetrol, the Master Class Program developed by the Salvi Foundation and held during the Cartagena International Music Festival, looks to enrich the musical education of young Colombian performers, as well as promote their integral development as musicians.

This is a class of close interaction between the Festival´s Artists and the young musicians that attend the program.

The students that attend not only have the opportunity to be taught by some of the world’s most distin-guished musicians, but they also get the opportunity of attending general rehearsals, music lectures and conversations, as well as the performances that take place during the Festival.

The first phase took place during the months of September and October of 2011. Music students from across the country registered through the Festival’s webpage (www.cartagenamusicfestival.com) without age, locality or level restrictions for participants.

The Salvi Foundation requires that the student pro-vides his full name, age, identification document, contact information, instrument played, length of study, and musical institution to which he belongs, or the name of his teacher.

For this year’s program, 518 registered students from across the country participated in master classes for:

violin, viola, cello, flute, recorder, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, piano, harp, percus-sion, and voice.

Venues:

In 2012, the Master Classes took place in two new venues: the Claustro San Francisco, part of the Corporación Universitaria Rafael Nuñez, and in the Regional SENA Site for the department of Bo-livar. With this system, we were able to generate two different learning environments, one for re-hearsals and the other for the classes themselves. Additionally, some of the classes took place at the Hilton Hotel.

Accreditation:

On January 5 and 6, 2012, the accreditation of every student took place. The ID given to every student was a requisite to attend classes, rehear-sals, and all other activities related to this program.

The students that enroll in the Master Class pro-gram come from the cities of Colombia, including Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Iba-gue, Popayán, Pasto, Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and, of course, Cartagena.

A percentage of about 45% of the student body are local students that benefit from the academic activities that are scheduled during these days.

Amongst the student body, there is also a select group of 62 distinguished students from across the country that receives a full scholarship to attend this program. The scholarship covers all travel, ho-tel, food, and transportation expenses, as well as ticket benefits for the different concerts. The stu-dents that qualify for this scholarship are chosen based on their outstanding interpretation skills and general aptitude. The program is sponsored by Jimmy and Becky Mayer and Anglogold Ashanti.

Traditional Venezuelan Music and Percussion Workshop

OPUS 3 Workshops

The Alexis Cárdenas Quartet, led by Venezuelan vio-linist Alexis Cárdenas, and joined by Jorge Glem (cu-atro, mandolin, arrangements), Elvis Martínez (con-trabass), and Carlos “Nene” Quintero (percussion), have made of their outstanding ensemble, a mu-sical encounter between the art of improvisation, the rhythms of jazz and the traditional and clas-sical repertoires. Given the caliber of these musi-cians, the Salvi Foundation put together two exclu-sive workshops for students only, one that centered around percussion, and the other on traditional Venezuelan music. The Quartet also offered a con-cert for the attendees at the end of the sessions.

This year, the Cartagena International Music Festi-val offered a series of four lectures titled “Conver-sations in Music,” hosted by journalist, and music expert Jonathan Levi. These conversations were attended by students of the Master Classes, free of charge. Additionally, four of the scholarship holders were chosen by Jose Alejandro Roca (Program Director) and Jonathan Levi, and had the opportunity to per-form a piece that was relevant to the thematic of the conference, during each of the four sessions.

Taking advantage of the presence of the “La Pa-sión” Orchestra in the Festival, and taking into account the importance of their trajectory in the music world, some of the most distinguished mem-bers offered workshops in different areas:

• Horns and Winds Master Class by Raymond Vega (trumpet), Leonard Peterson (trombone), and Hidehiro Domeki (trombone)

Horns and Winds Workshop

Concerts for Students

A master class for all horns and wind instruments was held by the members of the group Meta-les M5, in which they exhibited their ability for chamber music, scenic performance and inte-raction mechanisms with the audience, some of the characteristics that make their shows almost a theatrical experience.

They also demonstrated respiration and relaxation techniques, and offered specialized classes for every instrument.

The Mexican group Metales M5 offered a special concert to the academic community within the Festival. The concert took place on the patio of the Claustro San Francisco, and it gave the students and teachers of the master classes an opportunity to converse with the musicians and learn about their performance techniques.

The Alexis Cárdenas Quartet also performed in this space and offered the students a chance to play with the members of the band. Additionally, the group organized a series of sessions focused on the context, instruments, and rhythms found in traditional music.

These concerts took place for the first time this year, and were held exclusively for the students and teachers attending the Master Class program.

Closing Ceremony for the Master Classes

Other Academic Activities:

On January 14, 2012, a Closing Ceremony took place at the SENA Auditorium for the students graduating from the Master Class Program. Julia Salvi, President of the Salvi Foundation, was re-sponsible for handing out the diplomas that certi-fied the attendance and completion of the pro-gram.

Different activities were scheduled with a group of young local musicians that belong to the “Cen-tro de Alto Rendimiento de Pasacaballos” and the members of the Cartagena Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Edgar Vargas. The follow-ing activities were scheduled:

• Orientation Lectures to the program, the reper-toire, and the artists they would see rehearse.

• Admittance to the OSESP rehearsals in the Adol-fo Mejía Theater.

• Admittance to the workshops and sessions held throughout the Master Class Program.

• Admittance to the FREE concerts that took place at the Adolfo Mejía Theater.

• Admittance to “La Pasión Según San Marcos” by Osvaldo Golijov.

On the other hand, this is the first time that the Fes-tival hosted activities for a group of children from outside Cartagena. In agreement with the “Batuta Foundation” Directors, twenty-two children from the Santa Marta chapter of “Batuta” traveled to Cartagena with all expenses paid, to attend one of the rehearsal sessions, a series of lectures, and to tour the city of Cartagena. The twenty-two stu-dents were chosen based on exemplary skills by their own teachers from the “Batuta Foundation.”

The Lutherie Workshops that take place during the Cartagena International Mu-sic Festival, provide students and musi-

cians with the opportunity to learn about restora-tion and maintenance of their instruments. Given the fact that it is indispensable to have the instru-ments in optimal condition for a quality perfor-mance, the lutherie workshops are a formative space for the people in this field.

On the other hand, they also install the much needed culture of the well provided care for each instrument amongst the young musicians.

Instruments repairing workshop Ever since the first season of the Festival, work-shops on instrument repairing and restoration have been organized by the Salvi Foundation. These workshops have been mostly for string instruments (violins, violas, cellos and contrabasses).

An average of 150 symphonic string instruments are repaired every year, but in 2012, wind instru-ments were incorporated into the program, result-ing in about 50 more instruments being repaired, including flutes, trumpets, saxophones, oboes, and clarinets.

Instrument making workshops On the other hand, two new workshops were of-fered for the assembly and construction of Gaitas (flutes), and Tambores (drums), instruments that are traditional of the Caribbean Region of Colom-bia. These workshops were mainly attended by members of the more popular sectors of Cartage-na, and its surroundings: Pasacaballos, Santa Rosa del Norte and Turbana.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012 on the patio of the Claustro de San Francisco, the members of the lu-therie workshop performed the instruments they themselves assembled, playing a variety of native songs and rhythms.

After the 2011 season of the Cartagena In-ternational Music Fes-

tival, a proposal for the creation of an intellectual component arose. The purpose was to provide the general public with educational and theoretical opportunities in which they could learn about classical music, and its impact on society. With that in mind, a series of lectures titled “Conver-sations in Music,” came to life under the tutelage of journalist, musician, and writer, Jonathan Levi.

The conversations varied in theme, but basically focused on

generating dialogues about mu-sic with personalities and noted guests that would discuss the influence of music in their lives and their respective profession-al fields. Through these con-versations, moderator Jonathan Levi tried to show the influence of music in every aspect of life, the parallels between music and all other areas, and special-ly, how everyone can appreci-ate and admire music without having to be an expert on the subject.

For this year’s “Music of the Americas,” Mr. Levi had four notorious guests who, with the

exception of Osvaldo Golijov, were not musicians. The first lecture was with the Minister of Culture of Colombia, Mariana Gárces Córdoba, in a session where they discussed music and politics, centering around the question of whether music is a pleasure to be had only by those who can afford it, or if it is a primary right that has to be guaranteed to every and all citizens, as is health care and education. During the second lecture, Mr. Levi discussed mu-sic and religion with Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, the man responsible for “La Pasión Según San Marcos” (The Pas-

sion according to Saint Mar-cus), one of the most anticipat-ed performances for this year’s festival.

Carolina Gómez, renowned actress and runner up to Miss Universe, was Jonathan Levi’s third guest in what was one of the most delightful conversa-tions. They discussed music and beauty before a full house, and circled around various questions such as the way in which the human mind per-ceives beauty and is related to the different expressions of it. For the final lecture, Jonathan was joined by Colombian artist Valentino Cortazar to discuss art and music. The hour long conversation focused on the re-lation of these two worlds that express every sentiment with-out the use of words.

Julia Salvi, Director of the Salvi Foundation, has just successfully concluded the sixth version of the Cartagena International Mu-sic Festival. Her altruism and ef-fort has given the Colombian audience an amazing space to enjoy and learn about classical music.

“Diseñando & Haciendo”

Alexandra Agudelo and Jorge Lizarazo, two of Colombia’s top Element Designers, presented a show fea-turing decorative elements and objects titled “Diseñando y Haciendo” (Designing and Making). Deimos Gallery is responsible for the curatorship of this exposition, in which the high standards of quality that come from Colombian products was portrayed.

Alexandra Agudelo Her plates, utensils, bowls and pitchers coexist in perfect harmony inspired by the rugged landscape of Colombia, represented by jagged edges, high-lights, shadows, textures and carved asymmetry. This proposal explores more surprising and imper-fect organic scenarios.

Jorge Lizarazo Jorge believes in maintaining the traditional tech-niques of our textiles. But these need not to be val-ued as a petty souvenir, but as an aesthetic value that represents our traditional wisdom in a design object. Since Stephen Prust-man assumed the role of Artistic Director of

the Cartagena International Mu-sic Festival, the “Young Talents” Program has aimed to promote the country’s young musicians and provide them with a space in which they can develop their talent, learn from the best musi-cians, and finally perform in a professional environment as the main attractions of one of the Festival’s concerts. In lieu of this year’s theme, “The Sound of the Americas,” Stephen Prustman decided to choose the distin-guished “Young Talents” to rep-resent more than just Colombia. As a result, four talented musi-cians from Colombia, Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela became this year’s fortunate talents.

The first choice was Amanda Neves, 18-year-old Brazilian so-prano who caused a sensation in her native land after winning Raul Gil’s Talent Competition. The second musician selected to join the program was pianist Gustavo Miranda, a 20-year-old Chile native currently en-rolled in the prestigious Julliard School in New York. Carlos Ve-gas, member of the Simon Bo-livar Symphonic Orchestra of Venezuela, is a 24-year-old vio-linist from Venezuela who also joined the group. Through his performance and technique he demonstrated the excellent training and high quality of musicians that arise from “The System” created by Maestro José Antonio Abreu. Finally, Colombia was greatly represented by cellist Santiago

PRODUCTION SCHOLARSHIP

This new program was instituted by the Salvi Foundation to create a space in which students and recent

graduates of all areas of production could learn and practice the different skills involved in their craft, next to some of the world’s most specialized and recognized producers.

Through an open casting call, six outstanding production students were selected to partici-pate as production assistants throughout the entire Festival. Their work included activities and operations related to pre-production, ex-ecution, and post-production. From this first experience, a Production Techniques and Re-quirements Manual will be drafted and pub-lished by the Salvi Foundation, as a guideline to future members of this program.

These young students had the rare opportunity to work alongside seven of the world’s greatest experts in the fields of production and scene design, led by Italian producer and technical director, Maestro Antonio Miscena, president of ACISA. The scholarships covered transpor-tation and hotel accommodation costs.

Mateo López, a Fine Artist from Bogotá, was designated as

the artist to create the 2012 im-age of the Cartagena Music Fes-tival, themed “The Sound of the Americas.” For López, to have been part of this sixth season of the Festival signified a “new drawing exercise” that would represent a dialogue between music and his art in order to give a graphic identity to this year’s Festival.

Even with the innate differ-ences between the tools and instruments that are used for plastic arts and for music, there is a similarity in their com-mon interest in their notions of space and time. As the art-

ist himself states, “an image is never a simple plane.” To create it, the artist must endure a route of scales and atmospheres that are also present in any musical composition. For this reason, he played with the use of cut paper to find the image of this year’s Festival. Mateo López explains that “at some point, the idea of the Americas was discussed, and I immediately thought about a map, about the two oceans that surround the continent. I thought about the notions of North and South. For the lon-gest time we have talked about identity, but the frontiers, the geography, and the politics de-fine the American territory in a different way.”

Mateo López graduated as a Fine Artist from the University of Los Andes, and as an archi-tect from Javeriana University, both in Bogotá. He has head-lined several art shows in Bo-gotá, Mexico City, London, Sao Paulo, and Leon, Spain.

The art exhibit of the image of the "Sound of the Americas" was held from January 4 to February 4 at the Museum of Modern Art in Cartagena. The inauguration was on January 5 and was attended by guest musicians and friends of the Festival.

The Cartagena Interna-tional Music Festival has always looked for

ways to strengthen the bond with similar institutions from Carta-gena, and multiply the efforts and results of the social impact it has on the city. One of the best examples of this is the alliance and support that the Salvi Foun-dation and the Festival provide to the Granitos de Paz Founda-tion, through an annual dinner party and concert organized by the Foundation.

In this Festival season, the concert was performed by the St. Law-rence String Quartet, Argentine harpist María Luisa Rayán-Forero and Brian Ganz, an American pia-nist.

This initiative takes place every year and raises funds for the dif-ferent projects developed by the Granitos de Paz Foundation in the Rafael Nuñez area, one of the most impoverished sec-tors of Cartagena.

On January 6, 2012, fashion fi-nally joined forces with the Cartagena International Mu-

sic Festival to raise funds for the educa-tional programs developed and managed by the Salvi Foundation. Designer Ana Urrea presented her collection titled “The Colors of the Soul” that presented a jour-ney through five states of the human soul.

The esplanade of the Cartagena Conven-tion Center became a luxurious runway on which 30 of Colombia´s top models wore the beautiful designs of this talented fashion designer. Nigel Barker, judge of “America’s Next Top Model” next to the renowned Tyra Banks, was the guest of honor during the show.

But, without a doubt, all the luxury and elegance had a bigger purpose - all the ticket donations were raised for the edu-cational programs of the Salvi Foundation.

For the second consecutive year, the Cartagena International Music Festival, with the collaboration of the specialized media monitoring company, Com-petencia Plus, could know in detail the quantification and qualification of the information published by the different media outlets during the months of No-vember, December and January.

After the conclusion of the 2011 Festival, the Communications

Department of the Salvi Founda-tion came to the conclusion that there was a need to create a spa-ce in which the general public could find up-to-date information about the Festival, concerts, and artists. With the collaboration of El Espectador, one of the Festival’s strongest allies, it was agreed that for the 2012 season of the Festival, a 4-page spread titled “The Penta-gram” would circulate daily with the regular newspaper.

El Pentagrama is the first ever Cartagena International Music Festival newspaper and it was created as the result of a com-munications strategy to further display the educational and so-cial initiatives of the Salvi Foun-

DE LOS LLANOS A CARTAGENA

Luego de un recorrido de mil kilómetros y 20 horas en promedio, un grupo de 60 estudiantes de música de varios centros y universidades de Bogotá, Cali y Medellín llegó en bus a la Ciudad Heroica con la ilusión de participar en el Programa de Clases Magistrales que los artistas del Festival de Cartagena darían para ellos.

Durante el viaje, los jóvenes distrajeron el hambre, el can-sancio y el frío de la noche con música del Brasil, rock de los 90 y boleros. Para Julián Cárdenas, estudiante de arpa clásica de la Universidad Nacional, quien viajó en el bus que salía de la capital, la música fue el combustible del trayecto y el lenguaje por medio del cual entraron en confianza los distintos estudiantes.

Con la música se unieron y por ella llegaron a una ciudad que les dio la bienvenida con un amanecer reflejado en el mar y con la confirmación de que harían su sueño realidad. Un sueño que tal vez para todos será el pulso vital que los moverá a querer ser como sus ídolos, aquellos que también fueron principiantes pero hoy son los mejores artistas del festival más mágico y prestigioso de Suramérica. ¡Felicita-ciones a estos jóvenes por subirse al bus!

Los jóvenes becarios que practicaban en la Universidad Rafael Núñez sede Claustro de San Francisco tuvieron un taller al aire libre dictado por Jorge Glem y Élvis Martínez (integrantes del cuarteto de Alexis Cárdenas) junto con el joven arpista

colombiano Élvis Alejandro Díaz. El tema central fue la música folclórica venezolana.

Como parte del programa que desarrolla el Festival para fomentar la cultura y las activi-dades pedagógicas, los talleres de luthería se han consolidado

como un espacio en el que los profesio-nales en la elaboración de instrumentos musicales comparten sus conocimientos con estudiantes y les enseñan labores de mantenimiento, reparación y fabricación. Uno de los talleres que se realizan desde la edición pasada del Festival es la elabo-ración del tambor alegre, instrumento de percusión tradicional de la Costa Caribe colombiana que se utiliza para tocar porro, cumbia o gaita, entre otros géneros de la música afrocolombiana. A cargo de los maestros gaiteros Fredy Arrieta (ganador del Grammy latino en 2007 con Los Gaite-ros de San Jacinto) y José Álvarez (ganador

del festival de gaitas con su grupo “Joche y sus gaiteros”) se reali-za el taller en el que se busca que los estudian-tes aprendan la teoría, técnica y tradición de la elaboración de este instrumento.

En el primer día del ta-ller, los cerca de veinte estudiantes recibieron

la madera con la que deben trabajar durante los próximos tres días para elaborar su propio tambor alegre. El pro-ceso inicia con una ex-plicación por parte de los maestros sobre los pasos a seguir y las es-pecificaciones del tam-bor, como los tipos de madera que se utilizan para fabricar el tambor (ceiba, banco o caraco-lí), las especificaciones de tamaño que deben tener, algunos detalles del acabado y conse-jos para preservar el instrumento. Luego, los estudiantes comienzan a trabajar su madera, emparejándola y pu-

A las 3:00 p.m se llevará a cabo la ceremonia de clausura del programa de clases magistrales del festival, que este año reunió alrededor de 500 estudiantes de los cuales 60 eran becarios. Este pro-grama gratuito busca promover la educación musical, al ofrecer clases impartidas por los artistas invitados al festival a estudiantes y profesores de música del país.

Hoy, en el Centro de Convenciones a las 10:00 p.m, se presentará por segunda vez en el festival “La Pasión según San Marcos” del compositor argentino Osvaldo Go-lijov. Este montaje que se estrenó en Colombia el pasado jueves, reúne a los mejores instrumentistas y solistas junto a la Schola Cantorum de Venezuela. La dirección estará a cargo de María Guinand quien fue la encargada de dirigir esta obra para su estreno mundial en el año 2000 por comisión de la Internationale Bachakademie de Stuttgart.

Hoy a las 10:00 p.m. en la Plaza San Pedro, Maracatu Nação Pernambuco, ensamble tra-dicional de Brasil. Este grupo de 19 intengrantes es hoy una sintesis cultural del nordeste de Brasil. Durante la segunda guerra mundial, cuando Victor Salvi prestaba servicio para la ma-rina de Estados Unidos, ini-ció sus estudios en la crea-

ción de arpas y emprendió lo que sería una destacada carrera como fabricante de este instrumento.

El primer arpa se fabricó en 1954 en un só-tano en Nueva York y un año después, Salvi regresó a su pueblo de origen en Villa Ma-ría, cerca de Génova, Italia, para reunir a un grupo de artesanos locales y fundar Salvi Harps, la marca que revolucionó la cons-trucción del instrumento durante el último siglo. Hoy en día, el arpa hace parte del fes-tival y tiene un lugar especial en él, siendo el instrumento elegido para el motivo de la sexta edición, El Sonido de las Américas.A cargo del joven compositor colombiano

invitado Nicolás Prada, se compusieron 3 piezas que comisionó la Fundación Salvi con el ánimo de recrear obras folclóricas colombianas. Las obras “Colombia Tierra Querida”, del compositor Lucho Bermúdez, “La Mucura”, de Cresencio Salcedo y “A mi dios todo le debo” de Joe Arroyo, fueron las obras elegidas para ser reinterpretadas por Nicolás y ser adaptadas para arpa. “Es la primera vez que compongo para arpa y para estas obras tuve un proceso de autoapren-dizaje” dijo el compositor, quien tuvo que escribir la partitura teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones del arpa frente al piano. “La idea era recrear las obras pero aportándole ideas nuevas, manteniendo un balance en-tre lo que quiero yo como compositor y lo que creo que le gustaría al público”, afirma.

Teresa para un ensayo, Nicolás observaba atento la ejecución de la obra antes de pre-sentarla al público por primera vez. Nicolás mira con atención y luego hace algunas ob-servaciones y comenta sobre algunos deta-lles, los cuales María Luisa agrega a la obra para tocarla como quiere el compositor. La capilla vacía, con una tenue luz que entra por la ventana y el sonido del arpa que ocu-pa el recinto, tiene una magia especial. Por primera vez suena la composición de Nico-lás, que cobra vida en las manos de la arpis-ta y renueva el folclor de nuestro país.

“Con toda su juventud y todo su rigor, Nico-las asumió la composición de estas obras” dijo la presidenta de la Fundación Salvi, Ju-lia Salvi. “Las obras son muy buenas. Va a ser una dedicación al mundo del arpa”.

As a result, articles about the soloists, master class students, Lutherie Workshops, and all other Festival and Foundation initiatives, and general Festival news found a spa-ce day after day.

Aside from national circulation with "El Especta-dor", El Pentagrama was distributed in all the con-cert venues, hotels, and supporting companies in the city of Cartagena.

Coverage Analysis2.The Cartagena International Music Festival has become an icon of high quality, harmony, consolidation, and insuperable locations. It’s a musical window to the country and the world. The private entities that support it must be applauded for being part of a cultural movement.

For the 2012 Festival, 146 journalists from Colombia and 22 journalists from around the world, visited the Festival website (www.cartagenamusicfestival.com) to gain accreditation to cover the event.

In the sixth season of the Cartagena International Music Festival, the media (including newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and internet) registered an increase of 45% more information than the previous year. Between November of 2011 and February of 2012, a total of 435 publications

surfaced in the different media, compared to the 298 that covered the 2011 Festival.

Once again, the written press was responsible for publishing the majority of news related to the Festival. This time around, the event that caught the most attention was the premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “La Pa-sión Según San Marcos,” for being the biggest and most anticipated production of the Festival.

The newspaper with the greatest coverage was Cartagena's El Universal, accounting for 21% of all publi-cations, as a reflection of the great local interest in the event.

The next place was for El País that obtained a 12% of relevance, then El Tiempo which represented 11% of the information, El Espectador with 8%, followed by Nuevo Día with 7%. The newspaper La Verdad had a 6% relevance, while El Heraldo contributed to 5% of the published notes.

Being at this festival adds much to the experience of Cartagena, even to those not considered adept to classical music. The universality of the eth-nic music from different cultures, and the contagious enthusiasm of the audience accentuates the amazing experience of being here in this beauti-ful environment, in this magical city, with an amazing architecture and full of history.

It’s also worth noting that for the sixth season of the Festival, journalists from different media outlets, including television stations and travel magazines came to witness and cover the event, adding an important value to the coverage of the Festival.

Caras Magazine published 16% of the articles that focused on the Cartagena International Music Festival. This percentage is shared with Cromos, and followed closely by Jet-Set Magazine that accounted for 13% of all magazine articles published. Revista Semana published 8%, followed by Arcadia, Gente, Diners, and Vanidades with 5% each, and finally Prevention, Casaviva, P&M, Gerente, Don Juan, Soho, Elenco and Fucsia, which each were responsible for 1% of the total publications.

41% of the totality of the radio spots and coverage that mentioned the Cartagena In-ternational Music Festival was produced by RCN Radio through their various shows. RCN Radio presented, by far, the most important source of radio information, and was followed by LA FM that obtained 31% and La W with 22%. Finally, Caracol Bá-sica and Melodia Estéreo accounted for 3% of the total radio mentions.

As a result of the strong alliance between RCN and the Salvi Foundation, the RCN TV Channel and Net-work accounted for 88% of all the content broadcast through television. Canal RCN had special delegates that covered every single event of the Festival and broadcast the news live on every edition of the daily news.

After RCN, El Canal El Tiempo registered the second highest percentage of coverage with 6%, followed closely by Canal Uno with 4% thanks to the segments presented in several of their most popular pro-grams, including CM & News, Noticias Uno, and Sweet, which extensively covered the Ana Urrea Fas-hion Show. Finally, regional television station Telecaribe, and international television station Teleamiga reported 1% of total coverage each.

In order to account for all the notes and segments published in the various media outlets during the Festival season, there was an exact count of the times the notes would air according to the topic which they covered, whether it was the Festival itself or one of its relevant subjects (Julia Salvi, Ste-phen Prustman, and so forth).

This means that many segments could air more than once (in various editions of the news, for example), but that would only account for one mention in the total count.

Website3.The Website for the Cartagena International Music Festival (www.cartagenamusicfestival) launched the Image of the Festival created by artist Mateo Lopez, on September 1, 2011, at the same time that the Salvi Foundation offered a series of three concerts in different cities of Colombia to announce the program for the sixth season of the Festival. During this month, the website received a total of 5,447 visits, a number that increased constantly throughout the months that follow. October closed with a reported 7,071 visits, followed by 9,235 visits during November, 10,727 during December, and 15,922 for January, closing in at a whopping 48,402 visits in total.

The website was updated on a daily basis during the days of the Festival. Updates in-cluded photographs of the concerts, rehearsals, master classes, and all other activi-ties relevant to the Festival. A digital version of El Penta-grama could also be found on the website, alongside small notes from daily events.

From September 2011 to January of 2012, users from the following countries were the ones who most visited the Festival’s website.

Taking into account the afore-mentioned number of arti-cles, notes, and coverage made throughout the Festival, media investment for the 2012 season of the Cartagena International Music Festival was estimated at USD 3,360,663. This elevat-ed figure is a reflection of the growing relevance the Festival has acquired during the years, making it one of the most cov-ered and talked about events while it’s taking place.

This investment was divided through the different media out-lets in the following manner: Newspapers received USD 1,549,799, signifying a 46% of the total investment. The investment for Television Media was USD 1,248,599, equivalent to 37%, Magazines accounted for a 14% of the investment, re-ceiving USD 463,123, and the radio investment totaled USD 99,142, which represents a 3% of the total investment.

El Espectador was the medium that published the most valu-able article, titled “Una dedi-cacion al mundo del arpa,” a four-page spread that covered various subjects relevant to the Festival and the Salvi Founda-tion. This article has an approx-imate value of USD 105,040. RCN, as a founding partner of the Festival, made a great ef-fort to inform the general pub-lic about all the events and updates of the Festival through its various media outlets (Radio and TV).

Approximately 95% of the efforts went into television through men-tions, interviews, and coverage for the different television shows. El Espectador, also a founding partner, contributed with 43% of the total media investment by publishing various articles, and through the daily distribution of "El Pentagrama," the Cartagena International Music Festival’s own newspaper.

Concerts: In 2012, the coverage of the concerts that are broadcasted on television significantly in-creased. Eleven concerts were broadcasted live on Senal Colombia, and those same eleven concerts were transmitted on a deferred schedule on the international channels, TV Colombia and NTN24.

Publicity: During the live broadcast of the con-certs, the concert’s sponsor was recognized by several appearances of his name and logo on-screen. Also, the concert host would mention the sponsor at the beginning and end of the concert.

• Radio Broadcasts:

- RCN Clasica transmitted eleven concerts through their website www.rcnclasica.com

- The Red de Radio Universitaria de Colombia transmitted 13 live concerts through its network of 46 radio stations throughout the country. This net-work also provided daily updates and news cover-age of the Festival from January 6-14, 2012.

• Television Advertisement:

Young & Rubicam created an ad that was pro-duced by RCN TV, and was aired from Decem-ber 6, 2011 to January 6, 2012 four times a day on RCN during their early, prime, late, and down time slots.

• Radio Advertisement :

The radio ad for the Festival was produced by Young & Rubicam, and aired once during the RCN Radio Morning News, once during La FM News, and five times a day during different programs on La FM, RCN Radio and Amor Estereo, from De-

cember 13, 2011 to January 13, 2012. Also, at the beginning of the live broadcasts, the journalist would mention the name of the sponsor of each concert.

• Public Broadcasts through PUBLIK screens:

Through the various screens that the media com-pany PUBLIK has, the Festival was able to broad-cast some of its concerts live in some of the most popular areas of Cartagena, including Manga, To-rice, Barrio Crespo, Marbella, Bocagrande, Paseo Bolivar, Los Pegasos, Blas de Lezo, Los Alpes, Las gaviotas, Av. De Pedro Heredia, Getsemani, and San Isidro, amongst others. With this initiative, the Festival was watched throughout the city, reinstat-ing that music is, indeed, for everyone.

• Broadcast of the free concerts in La Proclamacion Square:

Because the free concerts are so popular, but lim-ited by the space in which they take place, we set up a screen in the nearby Plaza de la Proclama-cion so that more people were able to enjoy the concerts that took place in the Plaza San Pedro Claver and in the Plaza de la Trinidad in Getse-mani.

• Publicity on the PUBLIK Screens:

During the two months prior to the Festival (No-vember and December of 2011), the Publik Screens located around the country (Medellin, Bogota, Cali, Pereira, Bucaramanga, and Carta-gena) screened a promotional ad about “La Pasión Según San Marcos.” This initiative provided great visibility and created much attention for this par-ticular show.

• Publicity in the VIP lounge of the main airports:

The multiple screens that are located in the VIP Lounges of the airports in Colombia were also a medium through which the Salvi Foundation in-formed the general public about the upcoming events. A promotional video was screened repeat-edly and this way we were able to reach a very important demographic.

• Promotional magazine:

10,000 copies of the promotional magazine were issued and sent to various cultural centers abroad, VIP attendees, and international friends. The mag-azine was also distributed during the preview con-certs that took place in Cali, Medellín and Bogotá on September of 2011.

• Festival program:

10,000 copies of the Festival’s program were is-sued and distributed to the concert goers at the different venues.

• Informative brochure:

10,000 copies of travel size information brochures were printed and distributed to concert goers and tourists around the city of Cartagena. This bro-chure contained the entire concert schedule and a map that included the important concert sites around the country.

• Staff t-shirt:

All the members of the Festival Staff were required to wear a specific t-shirt so that they could be easily identifiable to the public in need of infor-mation. The shirts also contained the logos of the main sponsors on the back of the shirt.

The logos of our main sponsors were constantly showcased on our website through a series of ban-ners that appeared in different quantities accord-ing to the level of sponsorship they belonged to.

For the sixth season of the Cartage-na International Music Festival, the Salvi Foundation utilized its strategic alliances with some of the founding partners and principal media com-panies of the country to diffuse the information regarding concerts, and educational and social programs that would take place. These alliances al-lowed more people to have access to information about the events and increased media visibility by 45%.

The total investment in publicity amounted to USD 1,021,577, repre-sented in the publicity done through radio, newspapers, magazines, and television. The companies with which the Salvi Foundation gener-ated the strategic alliances which made this media impact possible were: RCN TV & Radio, El Espe-ctador Newspaper, Portafolio, and Caras Magazine.

Given the novelties in the Festival program and the new ac-tivities, the printed media became a primary source of infor-mation, reason for which the alliances with the print media companies became vital and a substantial part of the media investment. As the premiere of “La Pasión Según San Marcos” was one of the principal attractions, the Salvi Foundation de-cided that it was going to be performed on two different dates. For this reason, newspaper El Tiempo contributed with a donation worth USD 79,382 with 15 ads that ran in this newspaper and in Portafolio from November 7, 2011 until January 14, 2012.

On the other hand, El Espectador, one of the Festival’s founding partners and one of the major newspapers, also contributed their sponsorship in ads worth approximately USD 53,684. These ads announced the Gold Series Concerts that took place at the Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa, the “Conversations in Music” Lecture Series with Jonathan Levi, and the Ana Urrea Fashion Show that took place on January 6, 2012.

Caras Magazine also contributed with USD 20,123 and ob-tained the title of Media Collaborator. The ads announced the “Pasión Según San Marcos” Concerts and the Ana Urrea Fash-ion Show.

For the sixth year in a row, the Cartagena In-ternational Music Festi-

val has shown a constant pattern of growth that was maintained during this new season. This year, the Festival’s numbers showed an increase in the levels of participa-tion and divulgation.

The number of musicians, con-certs, broadcasts, participants, master class students, schol-arships awarded, and Festival attendance presented a 36% increase in respect to the previ-ous season (2011), and a 108% increase in respect to the first Festival in 2007. This means that in only six years, the Carta-gena International Music Festi-val has more than doubled its artistic content and its social impact, making it one of the largest festivals in America, and the most important one in Co-lombia. The Salvi Foundation takes great pride in the devel-opment and growth the Festival has had, and what it brings to the city of Cartagena and the country, in general. But more so than anything, through these numbers we reiterate our com-mitment to our society, and we continue to emphasize that mu-sic is for everyone.

group; together with 20 soloists, and four young talents, were all part of the 190 total national and international musicians that performed at the Fes-tival. These artists presented a repertoire that in-cluded classical, baroque, and traditional music in an estimate of 172 different pieces.

Part of the Salvi Foundation’s contribution is to support the institutions that produce some of these concerts with us. Such is the case of the San Pedro Claver home, where the Salvi Foundation covered the costs of maintenance work for the spaces that were to be used for the performances. There was also a donation made for office supplies and such. • The Master Class Program grew by incorporat-ing a greater number of students than ever before. Four hundred sixty-six music students and teach-ers (29% more than in 2011) joined the program to strengthen their knowledge about music through the master classes taught by our celebrated artists.

• Because of the high demand for the Gold Series Concerts, these performances took place twice a day, at 11:00 am and then at 3:00 pm at the Cha-pel of the Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa.

• For the first time since the beginning of the Fes-tival, a mobile screen provided by PUBLIK drove through the different neighborhoods of Cartage-na so that the live broadcasts could be seen my many. Approximately 2,000 people had access to the Festival’s programming thanks to this initiative. • Also for the first time, a concert was held in Tur-baco, a marginal area about 10 kilometers outside of Cartagena. The concert was performed by Ma-racatu Nação Pernambuco, a folkoric group from Brazil. This concert took place in the main plaza of Turbaco, on January 14th and it was held with the purpose of providing the inhabitants of this marginal area, the opportunity to witness one of the most beautiful and traditional representations of Brazilian culture.

• Distinguished journalist, Jonathan Levi, was in-vited as Director of the first ever “Conversations in Music” Lecture series. For this event, four distin-guished guests joined Jonathan Levi in discussing the relationship between music and politics, reli-gion, beauty, and art.

WHO IT BENEFITS

The Cartagena In-ternational Music Festival has a firm policy of organiz-

ing activities that are available to one and all social groups. As our principal target audience is the residents of the city of Carta-gena, the Festival tries to involve the city itself, encouraging peo-ple to participate and attend the different events that form part of the Festival program. This is also the reason why we form al-liances with local entities such as the Corporación Universita-ria Rafael Nuñez and the Mu-seum of Modern Art.

Students The Master Class Program has had exponential growth during the past years, reaching an all time high of over 466 students from across the country that benefit directly from this ini-tiative. For the 2012 season of the Festival, there was a wider range of students involved. For the first time, the Salvi Founda-tion reached out to all musical education entities regardless of the level they were in.

That is to say that academies, universities, schools, cultural centers, and programs that in-volved musical education were

all called to participate and reg-ister for the master classes. The requirements to enroll in the Master Class Program were to be a music student between the ages of 18 and 25, or an active music teacher who is a member of a specific music program. Out of the 518 students that en-rolled initially, 466 registered officially during the Festival.

Amongst those, a selected group of 62 students were awarded a full scholarship provided by Jimmy and Becky Mayer, the Salvi Foundation, and Anglo-Gold Ashanti. These scholar-

ships look to reward those ex-ceptionally talented musicians, and incorporate them into the Master Class Program by pro-viding them with the means to attend the Festival, free of costs.

Also, in order to facilitate the arrival of many of the students that don’t live in Cartagena, the Salvi Foundation provided free bus transportation to and from Bogota, Medellin, and Cali for the students that were enrolled in the program.

FINANCIAL RESULTS

The outstanding support of our allies and sponsors was crucial to the success and sustainability of the sixth annual Carta-

gena International Music Festival. Thanks to their contributions, the production of the Festival and the different social programs that take place du-ring this tame were afforded and provided for. That includes the master classes, free concerts, Luthe-rie Workshops, and so forth.

On the other hand, the resources contributed to the Salvi Foundation will continue to support the Foundation throughout the year of 2012. This allows the investments that have been made to be socially sustainable and represent an attractive in-vestment option for the Corporate Social Respon-sibility projects that support us.

Aside from the resources provided by the spon-sors, the Salvi Foundation has found different ways to obtain funds for the Festival. Ticket Sales in 2012 represented 14.4% of the total income, a percentage that grew by 34% in respect to the previous year. This is attributed to the fact that the new venues that were used to host some of the concerts had greater capacity and that some of the more popular concerts were also repeated. Al-ternative means of financing were the events that took place in Medellin, Cali and Bogota in Sep-tember as the first showcase of the 2012 program. But, without a doubt, the contribution from the private and public sectors was mostly responsible for making the Festival possible by contributing with 85.6% of the total income for the Festival.

This year, the Salvi Foundation raised USD 1,673,684 Eighty percent (80%) of this amount came from the industries of the private sector. This amount represents a 9% increase to the funds obtained in 2011 which totaled USD 1,514,211. This increase is a clear demonstration of the continued and growing support that the private industry has for this event.

The sixth season of the Cartagena International Music Festival had a total cost of USD 1,936,013, 62% of this amount was repre-sented by the production costs of the 26 concerts that were ac-cessible through ticket sales, and 38% of this amount was inves-ted in the benefit concerts, free concerts, academic concerts, lectures, lutherie workshops, and scholarships granted by the Salvi Foundation.

The sixth season of the Cartagena International Music Festival raised USD 3,960,552 between sponsorships and donations, and had a total cost of USD 3,754,537, represented in the production costs and investments made.

The USD 206,015 made in profit will be reinvested into the Salvi Foundation to account for administrative costs that are present throughout the rest of the year. It will also be used to support the educational and social programs that the Salvi Foundation develops through the year such as the Junior International Harp Festival in Villavicencio, Festicamara in Medellin, and other such initiatives. Every year, these programs gain importance within the Foundation as they reflect several of the objectives the Foundation has in order to develop and improve the musical industry in Colombia.

CONTRIBUTION TO TOURISM

For the past six years, during the month of January, the Cartagena International Music Festival has lured a specific type

of tourist to the city, and it presents a cultural and alternative option of activities for those looking to diversify their vacations. Around 50,000 tourists arrive each year from the cruise lines that dock in Cartagena, and as they arrive, they are provided with the new option of spending their time in a cultural gathering unlike any other.

For this reason, the Salvi Foundation has develo-ped alliances with important hotels to offer exclu-sive rates and promotions to those who attend the Festival, and this way, make their experience more enjoyable and comfortable. Every year, the Festi-val creates tourist packages that offer an array of services and benefits including access to the VIP parties, transportation in luxury Audi vehicles, and spaces to enjoy and witness the breathtaking site that is Cartagena.

The hotels that currently hold alliances with the Salvi Foundation are: the Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa, Sofitel Santa Clara, Cartagena de Indias, and the Hilton Hotel.

This initiative has resulted in a total direct and indirect investment to the hotel industry that ex-ceeds $2,000 million pesos, during the days that the Festival takes place. In 2012, nearly 24,000 people enjoyed Cartagena and all the events or-ganized by the Festival. This shows the magnitude and impact of the event that within the past six years has turned Cartagena into one of the musical destinations of the world.

UNE became part of the Festival as a Strategic Media Ally in the first Festival season. They have been in charge of putting together the press room of every Festival. Additionally, This year they set up a technological room in the Claustro San Francisco to provide computer and internet services to the 466 students attending the master class program.
