WELCOME
Welcome to the Spring edition of this half terms magazine.
We have lots of exciting things happening this half term leading up to Easter. We are really looking forward to our Bilberry residential in a few weeks where the theme is Science. It will be a great opportunity for some fun learning.
This is also an exciting term as we learn about and celebrate Easter across the academy. Please put the dates in your diary for our Easter
celebration.

Topics This Half Term:
In Literacy we have been reading lots of different traditional tales. It has been lovely to see the children re-inacting the stories in the role play and playing the three little pigs and the big bad wolf out in the playground. The children’s language has really improved too.
Our International Topic has been all about France. We have learnt some French songs and are able to count to 10 in French. Its been fun tasting all the different French foods too. Many children were not so sure about the cheese....!
The children have loved their topic about senses and in particular learning about the sense of taste and sight. They have been blindfolded and led around the playground by one another and have enjoyed a taste challenge where they had to taste different crisps and guess what they were.
Last Term’s Highlights
Next half term we are learning about life cycles. We are very excited to be welcoming chicks into the classroom. We will be watching the life cycle unfold and will have some eggs and an incubator and watch the eggs hatch into chicks. We know the children will love it. We will also be learning about Spring and what it brings and enjoying celebrating Easter.

GOD’S LOVE IN ACTION
The children loved our trip to Hatton Farm and have been talking about the animals that they saw, fed and held ever since. This has been a fantastic motivator during literacy lessons as well as during our science topics.
Thank you again to all the parents that came to support the children during our inspire workshop focusing on Social and Emotional learning. Our kindness tree looks amazing, and it has a huge positive impact on the children’s learning and development during lessons.
The children have really enjoyed learning about other cultures and languages. They have learnt how to greet each other in Spanish, how to dance and sing as well as learning about the culture in Spain. Special mention needed for Rafael who was able to lead some of the Spanish topic.

We will be learning all about the Shang Dynasty, because we have already learnt so much about China, it will be good to explore its history. Our phase is definitely looking forward to Bilberry.
We enjoyed a great visit to the Church where we learnt all about the Bible.
In our science topic we learnt all about body parts and tried to learn all the scientific names for them. It was hard!

GOD’S LOVE IN ACTION
Our Japan International Topic has been a big highlight of this term. We have LOVED learning Japanese greetings and welcomes, as well as practising our Katakana and calligraphy. I think all of the children would agree that our trip to Zen-Shin Martial Arts Academy was a particular highlight, mastering Karate and sampling Japanese food (especially the seaweed!)
We have really enjoyed learning how to be healthy in our PE lessons. Learning about different food types has really helped us when choosing what is good for it, and we even made healthy sandwiches to sample and try in class.
Kindness week as part of our SEL topic was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the different ways that we can encourage others and show kindness. It was great to see some of our parents at our Inspire Workshop - we had a great time doing kindness activities.

Social & Emotional Learning
This half term our SEL focus is Empathy
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the way in which we teach our children to develop fundamental life skills.
At St John’s & St Peter’s CE Academy we believe it is important to teach the WHOLE CHILD and not just focus on academic learning.
Empathy is the ability to imagine how someone else is feeling and to respond with care. This is a complex skill to develop. In school we will explore how to empathise through role play, discussions and small
group activities.

Aiming to be channels of God’s transforming love
Dear friends,
Here are details of some of our ministry that is happening in term time around the neighbourhood, led by our Youth and Community Pastor, Pete Dalton.
Krunch After School Club
‘Krunch’ is a fun and exciting club: full of activities, stories, arts and crafts, games, drama and much much more. Krunch is designed to be interactive and enjoyable, with a clear emphasis on morals, Christian values and teachings.
In March 2017 Krunch celebrates its 4th birthday, where we celebrate many children finding a safe, fun and welcoming group to be a part of, equipping them to make positive choices in their lives and for the future.
Krunch operates out of the Ladywood Methodist Hall (across the road from St John’s & St Peter’s Academy on St Vincent Street West, B16 8RW) every Tuesday 3:30pm-5:00pm. The club is open to all age 8-11 and best of all it’s free.
Ladywood YFC (Youth For Christ) Sports- Recreational Football
Every Friday, 4:00-5:00pm we welcome young people age 8-14 to come and play recreational football at the Ladywood Health & Community Centre. Each session involves 5 a side matches and has a short punchy thought for the day in our half time break. Sessions are really popular, emphasising key Christian values such as: respect, tolerance, sportsmanship and team work. The project enables local young people to build strong relationships with positive role models, swapping guns & knives for the football pitch. All sessions are free of charge.
Big blessings,
Peter Dalton St John’s & St Peter’s Church Youth & Community Pastor

Freya
Reception
February 2017
Freya is a fantastic role model. She always tries her best in everything she does. Her behaviour is exemplary and she
always makes the right choice both in the classroom and outside. She is a lovely
friend and always takes care of children and is kind and thoughtful.
p20
The Citizenship Award is given at the end of every half term to one child in each class that
has ‘stood out’ . It could be for something they have achieved, hardwork or extra effort
they have done or for being a great example to others in their behaviour, actions or attitude.
Congratulations to each of these that have received the Citizenship Award for this half term.
Citizenship Award

in her spare time.
Citizenship Award

EbyanEbyan is one of the most helpful children I know. She always asks me whether there are jobs to be done, and she is willing to help whatever they may be. Ebyan is an
excellent role-model not just the children in our phase, but to everyone in the way that she presents herself around school.
YabseraYabsera always looks after the people in our phase, and constantly chooses to do the right thing. She is a pleasure to teach, and sets a great example to
her classmates.
