DEAR FRIENDS, The Center for the Performing Arts and the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative are just a few short weeks away from our most ambitious combined project to date. On June 16, artistic director Michael Feinstein will unveil the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Designed to honor America’s musical legends, the Encore Celebration sponsored by Krieg DeVault will be packed with musical performances, an exquisite dinner and an after-party filled with dancing. We invite you to join us!

The musical contributions of Barry Manilow, Cole Porter and Alan and Marilyn Bergman (famous for many of Barbra Streisand’s greatest hits) will take front and center. These artists – and those honored in the years ahead – represent the lyricists, composers and performers responsible for creating America’s soundtrack. Broadway stars will sing the honorees’ iconic songs. Plus, Manilow and the Bergmans will accept their Hall of Fame awards in person on the Palladium stage, with members of the Porter family accepting on behalf of Cole Porter.

The week leading up to the Encore Celebration sponsored by Krieg DeVault is filled with song, too. The Center has the privilege of welcoming extraordinary young vocalists from all parts of the country, representing a wide spectrum of talent. The third annual Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition culminates June 12-15, right here at the Palladium. Three stars of Broadway and pop music – plus a celebrity DJ – have joined the entertainment lineup for the Encore Celebration Gala presented by Krieg DeVault. The June 16 event benefits the Center for the Performing Arts and serves as the first annual Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Induction.

Michael Feinstein, the Center’s artistic director, will be joined by Clay Aiken in a tribute to Barry Manilow, with Lari White singing hits by Marilyn and Alan Bergman, and Andrea McArdle performing Cole Porter tunes. Together, the vocalists will honor the inductees’ musical contributions to the Great American Songbook. Barry Manilow, Cole Porter and the songwriting duo of Alan and Marilyn Bergman (creators of Barbra Streisand’s greatest movie scores including The Way We Were and Yentl) are the inaugural class of the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.

On the evening of June 16, guests at the Center for the Performing Arts campus will be greeted with a cocktail reception leading up to the Hall of Fame concert tribute. Following the concert will be dinner. Plans include after-party clubs spread throughout the Palladium, with DJ Tony Okungbowa – from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” – on the main stage for dancing. A dueling piano bar and an authentic Chicago jazz club are also available for guests to roam in and out of throughout the After Party.

The Encore Celebration is presented by Krieg DeVault. Additional companies making this evening possible include First Merchants Bank, Katz, Sapper & Miller, Makers Mark and Tom Wood Jaguar. IN THE NEWS The Great American Songbook Vocal Competition tickets on sale See finalists from across the country compete for a $3,000 award and the chance to perform at Feinstein’s in New York City. The competition’s judges, Michael Feinstein, Jim Caruso, Sandi Patty, La Tanya Hall, and Sylvia McNair, are industry professionals representing genres ranging from opera to cabaret to jazz and will also be performing at the final competition. Tickets start at $10 and all $50 tickets include premium seating and a $25 tax-deductible donation to the Feinstein Initiative. The Competition Final is June 15.

The following finalists are participating in a five-day comprehensive “boot-camp” taking place at the Center June 12-15. The workshop focuses on interpreting and performing the music of the Great American Songbook and is led by local and national celebrity performers and professionals. The classes are intended to prepare finalists for the Final Competition performance at the Palladium, when each student will perform two songs and the top three winners will be announced.

“Corea is an incredible pianist in his own right, and the work these two musicians have been doing as a duo for 40 years is tremendous, but I have to admit it is Burton who is the draw for me. This Indiana native completely revolutionized how the vibraphone is played when he introduced his four-mallet technique (as opposed to the standard two-mallet approach). The sounds that Burton coaxes from his instrument on the jazz “standards” that the duo performs sound almost impossible when you consider that it is just one man playing the vibes. I remember listening to my dad’s copy of Burton’s solo album Alone at Last when I was kid and was convinced that it was really a trio performing. Krieg DeVault has been a visible partner at the Center for the Performing Arts since day one – literally. For the Palladium’s grand opening the law firm sponsored the Encore Celebration after-party. Heading into their second year of partnership with the Center, Krieg DeVault looked to expand their involvement by becoming the title sponsor for the Center’s annual fundraiser, the Encore Celebration presented by Krieg DeVault.

Applause! asked Bali Heir, Chief Marketing Officer for Krieg DeVault, to share her thoughts on the Encore Celebration and corporate partnerships.

What types of advantages do you see for corporate partners as supporters of the arts?

Supporting the arts is a way to build a powerful presence and engage stakeholders in the geographic locations where they do business and have an office. When you bring a client to a stunning building like the Palladium to enjoy world-class artists, they remember that. Plus a vibrant arts community ensures a higher quality of life for our current and future employees, clients and the community as a whole.

How do you align business goals with community engagement, like the Encore Celebration?

When deciding which organizations to support, we look at which organizations our partners and employees are engaged with as well as which organizations our client-base supports. We then look for how we can utilize the opportunity to promote business growth whether by entertaining current clients or cultivating new clients. For example, Krieg DeVault has an office with

many employees in Carmel. The Center is a landmark in Carmel so by supporting the Center, we are also given the opportunity to engrain ourselves within Carmel and Hamilton County communities.

During the early stages of planning for the event, you reached out to several of your firm’s corporate partners. Tell us more about the synergy you are developing across disciplines?

After we had made our decision to support the Center’s Encore Celebration Gala, we thought about what other companies we wanted to share the spotlight with at the event. We chose to align with partners who share the same strategic and community involvement focus as our firm. We were happy to help the Center achieve its goals by recruiting our partners, Katz Sapper & Miller and First Merchants Bank, to sponsor the event as well.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Encore Celebration Gala?

The best part about the Gala and what many people don’t realize is that it is an seven-hour non-stop party! From the moment you arrive at the cocktail reception to the performance, the dinner and the after-party, it seems like everywhere you turn there is a new musical act to enjoy or a different tasty item to try.

ENHANCE YOUR CONCERT EXPERIENCEHow would you like to arrive at your next Center Presents performance and receive complimentary valet parking, drinks at the bar and hors d’oeuvres at intermission?
