On October 5, 1984, Marc Garneau became Canada’s first astronaut when he rocketed into space from a launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In doing so, Garneau became a national hero. Seven of his fellow citizens followed in his footsteps, many more than once. Julie Payette, a young mother and adventurer from Montreal, was the first Canadian woman to visit the International Space Station. Chris Hadfield, a former fighter pilot from Ontario, was the first Canadian to do a spacewalk, while Saskatchewan-born Dr. Dave Williams performed surgery on test animals while his shuttle sped around the globe.

This book was written as a 25th anniversary tribute to these brave men and women who defied tremendous odds, risked their lives, and soared from Earth on sheets of flame. By leaving the only planet known to be habitable, they became true explorers in an ever-expanding universe we will never completely know.

John Melady is a veteran writer and space enthusiast. He has written nine books, including Star of Courage and Heartbreak and Heroism. Melady lives in Seaforth, Ontario.

Alexander Young Jackson’s name instantly conjures up images of our rugged northern landscape and the controversial Group of Seven. This is the first-ever full-length biography of one of Canada’s most beloved characters, and the first to examine in one book the artist, outdoorsman, soldier, teacher, debater, writer, and outspoken defender of modern art.

Jackson spent nearly 70 years travelling throughout Canada, rendering his impressions of its diverse character on canvas and promoting a vibrant, uniquely Canadian style of painting. From southern Alberta to Ellesmere Island, from Newfoundland to northern British Columbia, he covered more ground than any other artist — scoffing at harsh weather and hostile criticism along the way.

A.Y. Jackson takes readers on a journey through Jackson’s struggles and triumphs, from his childhood in Victorian-era Montreal through his final years as a living legend of Canadian art who thought nothing of camping in a tent on Baffin Island at age 82.

Wayne Larsen is a landscape artist, newspaper editor, and media columnist who frequently lectures on A.Y. Jackson and the Group of Seven at educational and cultural institutions. He is currently editor-in-chief of the Westmount Examiner and part-time professor of journalism at Concordia University in Montreal.

Previous edition: The Canadian Federal Election of 2006

978-1-55002-650-4$24.99 £16.99

The Canadian Federal Election of 2008 is a comprehensive analysis of all aspects of the campaign and election. The chapters, composed by leading political writers, commentators, and pollsters, examine the strategies, successes, and blunders of the major players — the Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats, Bloc Québécois, and Greens — and also explore the role of media coverage and the performance and influence of public opinion polls.

Special features in this definitive volume detail the way candidates are nominated and the changes in the legislation governing Canadian federal elections. Finally, the book includes a detailed analysis of voting patterns and the rate of voter participation.

Contributors include journalist Susan Harada (“The Green Party Campaign”), University of Calgary professor and Harper adviser Tom Flanagan and Harold Jansen (“Party Fundraising and Expenditure”), and Liberal pollster Michael Marzolini (“The Polls and the Campaign”).

Jon H. Pammett and Christopher Dornan, the editors, represent the co-operation between political science and journalism that is the tradition of this series of books.

By every principle of war, every shred of military logic, logistics support to Canada’s Task Force Orion in Afghanistan should have collapsed in July 2006. There are few countries that offer a greater challenge to logistics than Afghanistan, and yet Canadian soldiers lived through an enormous test on this deadly international stage — a monumental accomplishment. Canadian combat operations were widespread across southern Afghanistan in 2006, and logistics soldiers worked in quiet desperation to keep the battle group moving. Only now is it appreciated how precarious the logistics operations of Task Force Orion in Kandahar really were.

What the Thunder Said is an honest, raw recollection of incidents and impressions of Canadian warfighting from a logistics perspective. It offers solid insight into the history of military logistics in Canada and explores in some detail the dramatic erosion of a once-proud corner of the army from the perspective of a battalion commander.

Lieutenant-Colonel John Conrad is a combat logistics officer with 25 years of experience. He has commanded Canada’s logistics battalion in Cambodia, Bosnia, and Kandahar, where in 2006 he was decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal for his leadership. He lives in Orono, Ontario.

David Wingfield joined the Royal Navy in 1806 at the age of 14. His service took him to the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. Captured, he was a POW in the United States for nine months. Following his release, Wingfield had some intriguing adventures on the Upper Great Lakes before returning to England. Once home, he used his handwritten notes, kept during his time in North America, as the basis for an account of his experiences there.

This unique history of Canada during the War of 1812 and the stories of the people and places Wingfield was exposed to during this time are being made available in book form for the first time. This is the only account of the War of 1812 as seen through the eyes of a young seaman. Included is a Wingfield genealogical description that spans the modern world.

Don Bamford was an avid sailor for many years and is the author of Freshwater Heritage. He lives in London, Ontario.

Paul Carroll has published numerous articles on the local history of Huron County and maintains www.shipwreckwexford.ca, which documents the history and loss of the packet Wexford in the Great Storm of 1813. He lives in Goderich, Ontario.

WAR BRIDES The Stories of the Women Who Left Everything Behind to Follow the Men They Loved by Melynda Jarratt

Voices of the Left Behind978-1-55002-585-9$24.99 £12.99

For thousands of young British girls, the influx of Canadian soldiers conscripted to Britain during the Second World War meant throngs of handsome young men. The result was over 48,000 marriages to Canadian soldiers alone, and a mass immigration of British women to North America and around the world in the 1940s.

For many brides, the decision to leave their families and homes to move to a country thousands of miles away with men they hardly knew brought forth ensuing happiness. For others, the outcome was much different, and the darker side of the story reveals the infidelity, domestic violence, poverty, alcoholism, and divorce that many lived through.

War Brides draws on original archival documents, personal correspondence, and key first-hand accounts to tell the amazing story of the war brides in their own words — and shows the love, passion, tragedy, and spirit of adventure of thousand of British women.

Melynda Jarratt has researched the war brides since 1987. She has contributed her expertise to History Television, Pier 21, Veterans Affairs, and the Parliamentary Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. She runs the authoritative website www.warbrides.com. Jarratt lives in Fredericton.

Relying on only her inner resolve and an indomitable spirit, Mary endures and finds the strength to escape her life of drudgery. POLISH ORPHANS OF TENGERU The Dramatic Story of Their Long Journey to Canada 1941–49by Dr. Lynne Taylor

Polish Orphans of Tengeru is the story of 23 Polish Catholic DP (Displaced Persons) orphans who were brought to Canada from East Africa in 1949 as part of the settlement of the postwar DP crisis. They came to East Africa as part of a mass exodus of Poles out of the gulags of Siberia in 1942 and 1943.

In the process of moving them in 1949 from Tanganyika, through Italy and Germany, to Canada, the situation became an international incident. Warsaw protested that Canada and the International Refugee Organisation, with the active collaboration of the American and British governments, was kidnapping these children to use as slave labour on Canadian farms and in Canadian factories, tearing them from their families in Poland in the process. It even reached the floor of the General Assembly of the United Nations and dragged in the Italian, British, and American governments before all was said and done.

Dr. Lynne Taylor has been an associate professor in the Department of History of the University of Waterloo since 1992. Her research focuses on the social history of the Second World War and its immediate aftermath. Taylor lives in Waterloo, Ontario.

By 1781, the sixth year of the American rebellion, British strategic focus had shifted from the northern states to concentrate in the south. Canada’s governor, Frederick Haldimand, was responsible for the defence of the Crown’s largest colony against the threat of Franco-American invasion, while assisting overall British strategy. He cleverly employed his sparse resources to vigorously raid the rebels’ frontiers and create anxiety, disruption, and deprivation, as his Secret Service undermined their morale with invasion rumours and threatened their Union by negotiating with the independent republic of Vermont to return to the British fold.

Haldimand flooded New York’s Mohawk and Schoharie valleys with Indian and Loyalist raiders and, once the danger of invasion passed, he dispatched two coordinated expeditions south. One was launched onto Lake Champlain to alarm Albany and further the secret talks with Vermont. The second struck deep into enemy territory, fought a battle at Johnstown, and retreated precipitately. The rebels effectively countered both expeditions.

Gavin K. Watt is a founding member of the Museum of Applied Military History. His previous histories of the American Revolution are Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley and The Burning of the Valleys. He lives in King City, Ontario.

Elmer Iseler978-1-55002-815-7$40.00 £20.00

This is the story of the creation and first four decades of one of Canada’s pre-eminent cultural organizations. While it documents the history of Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa, it also describes the arts in Canada from the 1960s to 2006. The account is divided into three parts: the years of creation and early growth, fuelled by the talent and resources generated by Canada’s 1967 Centennial celebration; the turbulent middle years, marked by a dearth of funds and political disinterest; and finally the “renaissance,” when the decision was made to restore and recast the organization to provide continuing benefit to the performing arts in Canada’s capital and the country at large.

Written in a documentary style, moving from episode to episode, the story is enriched by the personal memories of those who participated in it, including the leading artists, managers, officials, and politicians who were involved.

Sarah Jennings is a journalist whose work has been featured on the CBC and BBC, and in the Globe and Mail, the National, the Financial Post, and The Wall Street Journal. She was a lecturer at Carleton University’s School of Journalism until 2005. She lives in Ottawa.

One of Canada’s founding peoples, the Irish arrived in the Newfoundland fishing stations as early as the seventeenth century. By the eighteenth century they were establishing farms and settlements from Nova Scotia to the Great Lakes. Then, in the 1840s, came the failures of Ireland’s potato crop, which people in the west of Ireland had depended on for survival. “And that,” wrote a Sligo countryman, “was the beginning of the great trouble and famine that destroyed Ireland.”

Flight from Famine is the moving account of a Victorian-era tragedy that has echoes in our own time but seems hardly credible in the light of Ireland’s modern prosperity. The famine survivors who helped build Canada in the years that followed Black ’47 provide a testament to courage, resilience, and perseverance. By the time of Confederation, the Irish population of Canada was second only to the French, and four million Canadians can claim proud Irish descent.

Donald MacKay’s 60-year career as a reporter, broadcaster, historian, and author of 10 books has taken him to every Canadian province and a dozen countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Two of his books, The Lumberjacks and Scotland Farewell, were runners-up for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. Flight from Famine received Quebec’s 1991 QSPELL Prize. He lives in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Treasures of many kinds still lie hidden below crumbling castles and ruined monasteries; in macabre tombs; in subterranean labyrinths; and in sinister caverns. Many sunken treasures are beneath the seas, oceans, and lakes of the world. Vast stores of pirate gold are still hidden on many a real-life treasure island such as Oak Island at Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Many treasures were looted, hidden and lost after the two world wars — Hermann Goering, for example, one of the most powerful leaders of Nazi Germany, is strongly suspected of hiding huge treasures at Veldenstein and Lake Zeller.

This fascinating, expertly researched book brilliantly reveals all these unsolved mysteries. The final section covers useful ideas for treasure-seekers: the study of old maps and charts; coded messages; secret symbols; and intensive research into the lives and locations of those people throughout history who likely had treasure to hide.

Lionel and Patricia Fanthorpe have investigated the world’s unsolved mysteries for over 30 years and are the authors of 15 bestselling books, including Mysteries and Secrets of Santeria, Voodoo, and Obeah and Mysteries and Secrets of the Masons. They live in Cardiff, Wales.

Ghost Towns of Muskoka978-155002-796-9

Long-dead British soldiers, grieving lovers, an undead priest — Niagara-on-the-Lake’s long and colourful history is kept alive by ghosts of its past. Widely considered to be Canada’s most haunted community, the town has preserved much of its built heritage, thus providing perfect “haunts” for age-old spirits.

Through historical investigation and engrossing storytelling, the authors have detailed nearly two dozen ghosts. An ageless tavern is home to the spirit of a British officer slain in its basement, a gentlemanly ghost except when encountering Americans; a woman comes face-to-face with a hero from the past while working at one of the nation’s most cherished historic landmarks; visitors to Queenston Heights are stalked by phantom soldiers.

Historical research is embedded in every tale in an attempt to establish the line between fact and fantasy. But numerous eyewitness accounts will draw the reader into these unusual and often unnerving stories.

Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva are the authors of Strange Events of Ontario. Andrew is a local history columnist and has written on history and travel for a number of regional and international publications. Maria is a contributor to the Muskoka Sun and North Bay Sideroads. They live in Bradford, Ontario.

In the early twentieth century a movement flourished in the Midwestern states bordering the Great Lakes to champion the St. Lawrence route as the answer to easily transporting goods in and out of the centre of the contintent. Internal rivalries in the United States and Canada held back the project for 50 years until Canada suddenly decided to build a seaway alone, pressuring the American Congress to co-operate. The building of the Seaway, and its completion in 1959, involved engineering on an unprecedented scale and significant human dislocation. During construction, communities along the Great Lakes planned for increased prosperity, but changes in transportation, aging infrastructure, and environmental problems have meant that “the Golden Dream” hasn’t been fully realized even today.

This popular history chronicles the rise of one of the great engineering projects in Canadian history and its controversial impact on the people living along the St. Lawrence River.

Ronald Stagg has taught at Ryerson University for over 30 years, specializing in Canadian history. He has written on subjects relating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and served 10 years as chair of Ryerson’s history department. He lives in Toronto.

Wolfe Island begins with the emergence of islands at the end of the last ice age, and in particular the limestone island that ultimately would bear the name Wolfe Island, and moves through the many centuries of First Nations habitation to the era of French exploration and fur trading, the arrival of the earliest British settlers and the United Empire Loyalists, up to current times.

The development and decline of industry, the evolution of facilities, land title frustrations, and the emergence of a strong sense of identity among the inhabitants are featured, along with a wealth of anecdotes based on colourful and eccentric personalities. This extensively researched history of Wolfe Island is a treasure trove for history buffs.

Barbara Wall La Rocque is a Toronto resident with ties to Wolfe Island that began in her childhood. She continued her father’s research to fulfill his dream of a worthy book on the history of Wolfe Island.

The Lake Erie shoreline has witnessed some of Ontario’s earliest history, yet remains largely unspoiled. Much of the area’s natural features — the wetlands, the Carolinian forests — and its built heritage — fishing ports and military ramparts — provide much of interest for vistors to the region.

Ron Brown has traversed this most southern coastline in Ontario, fleshing out forgotten stories of the past, from accounts of the world’s largest freshwater fishing fleet, War of 1812 skirmishes, links with the Underground Railroad, forgotten outposts and canals, the introduction of wineries, and the legacy of the many appealing towns and villages that hug the shore.

Ron Brown has published many books, including Back Roads of Ontario, Toronto’s Lost Villages, and Ontario’s Ghost Town Heritage. He is a member of the Travel Media Association of Canada and chaired The Writers’ Union of Canada. He lives in Toronto.

When the Lincoln Alexander Parkway was named, it was a triumph not only for this distinguished Canadian, but for all African Canadians. The Journey From Tollgate to Parkway examines the history of Blacks in the Ancaster-Burlington-Hamilton area, their struggle for justice and equality in education and opportunity, and their achievements, presented in a fascinating and meticulously researched historical narrative.

Although popular wisdom suggests that Blacks first came via the Underground Railroad, the possibility that slaves owned by early settlers were part of the initial community, then known as the “Head of the Lake,” is explored.

Adrienne Shadd’s original research offers new insights into urban Black history, filling in gaps on the background of families and individuals who are very much part of the history of this region, while also exploding stereotypes, such as that of the uneducated, low-income early Black Hamiltonian.

Adrienne Shadd is the co-author of We’re Rooted Here and They Can’t Pull Us Up and The Underground Railroad. She has curated exhibits on African-Canadian history and, more recently, worked on the travelling exhibit “Enslaved Africans in Canada.” She lives in Toronto.

Across Canada peace officers put their lives on the line every day. From John Fisk in 1804, the first known Canadian policeman killed in the line of duty, to the four RCMP officers shot to death in Mayerthorpe, Alberta, in 2005, renowned true crime writer Edward Butts takes a hard-hitting, compassionate, probing look at some of the stories involving the hundreds of Canadian law-enforcement officers who have found themselves in harm’s way.

Some, like the four RCMP officers who perished in the Northwest Territories on the “Lost Patrol” of 1910, died in horrible accidents while performing their duties. Others, such as the Mounties involved in the manhunts for Almighty Voice and the Mad Trapper of Rat River, found themselves in extremely dangerous, violent situations.

One thing is certain about all of these peace officers: they displayed amazing courage and never hesitated to make the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow citizens.

Edward Butts is the author of several true crime books, including SOS: Stories of Survival and True Canadian Unsolved Mysteries. He lives in Guelph, Ontario.

The illegitimate son of a Scottish plantation owner and a mixed-race woman, James Douglas was born in Guyana in 1803. After schooling in Scotland, he joined the fur trade as a lowly clerk. He rose to be governor of the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia and even received a knighthood from Queen Victoria.

Douglas’s life story weaves through the heart of Canadian and Pacific Northwest history, when British Columbia was a wild land containing a few hundred settlers and 30,000 First Nations peoples. He established Victoria and then secured the vast region for British interests, preventing land grabs by the Russian Empire to the north and the expansionist Americans to the south. Autocratic and often accused of favouritism, Douglas retired in 1863. He died in 1877.

When Vancouver did not exist and Victoria was a muddy village, Douglas’s vision and drive laid the foundation for Canada’s westernmost province.

Julie H. Ferguson is the author of Sing a New Song, Through a Canadian Periscope, and 11 other non-fiction books. She lives in Port Moody, British Columbia.

Shawnee war chief Tecumseh tried to forge a confederation of tribes to counter American territorial ambitions. Tecumseh took part in the doomed struggle to preserve the Ohio Valley for aboriginal peoples and was at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in August 1794, which decisively quashed Native aspirations in the region.

Tecumseh continued his efforts to rally the tribes against the Americans, visiting the southern nations in 1811 to convince them to join. During the War of 1812, he allied his forces with the British and Canadians, and his active participation was crucial during the early months of the conflict. Tecumseh won a decisive victory against the Americans in the woods at Fort Meigs, Ohio, in May 1813, but was killed at the Battle of Moraviantown in October 1813 in what is now Ontario. Tecumseh’s death virtually marked the end of First Nations resistance to U.S. expansion south of the Great Lakes.

Jim Poling Sr. is the author of Waking Nanabijou, a memoir about his search for his mother’s origins and an exploration of the shameful ongoing discrimination against First Nations people. His other books include Tom Thomson: The Life and Death of the Famous Canadian Painter and The Canoe: An Illustrated History. He lives in Alliston, Ontario.

Originally published in the early 1950s, The Scalpel, the Sword celebrates the turbulent career of Dr. Norman Bethune (1890–1939), a brilliant surgeon, campaigner against private medicine, communist, and graphic artist. Bethune belonged to that international contingent of individuals who recognized the threat of fascism in the world and went out courageously to try to defeat it.

Born in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Bethune introduced innovative techniques in treating battlefield injuries and pioneered the use of blood transfusions to save lives, which made him a legend first in Spain during the civil war and later in China when he served with the armies of Mao Zedong in their fight against the invading Japanese. He is today remembered among the pantheon of Chinese revolutionary heroes.

Ted Allan (1916–1995) was a playwright, actor, screenwriter, novelist, and biographer. Allan’s works include This Time a Better Earth (1939), Lies my Father Told Me (1949), and Love Is a Long Shot (1984), which won the Stephen Leacock Award.

Sydney Gordon (1915–1984) was a childhood friend and collaborator of Ted Allan in Montreal.

John Munin is a rational man, a gifted psychiatrist who believes that the soul and psyche are interesting only in dissection. Even relationships are ripe for analysis, and Munin has identified “six elements that are necessary for love.” More susceptible to Munin’s searching analysis, though, is Penelope, who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and is Munin’s star patient.

Munin plans to present Penelope’s case at a major medical conference in Nevada. But tragedy strikes on the eve of the event, and the probing psychiatrist’s orderly world crumbles in the crucible of the desert.

Set against the bizarre backdrop of Las Vegas where fate can change unalterably with the turn of a card, Munin is forced to question all of the truths he has held dear. Do events happen due to careful planning or is life just a game of chance? If God played dice with the universe, would he win?

The discovery of two headless corpses dressed in colonial clothing and locked in a grisly embrace draws Detectives Miranda Quin and David Morgan of the Toronto Police Service into a Gothic mixture of sex and death that ultimately threatens their survival.

What if the difference between good and evil is only perception?

Beginning with morbid curiosity, Miranda and Morgan get caught up in a story of inspired depravity. Through revelations in such diverse locations as a Toronto demolition site, a lonely farmhouse on Georgian Bay, the crypt of a derelict church, and inside the murky depths of a shipwreck, this perverse account of love, lust, and murder builds to a horrific crescendo. Seduced by their own personal demons, Quin and Morgan might not find their considerable skills and strong bonds enough this time to help them overcome the terrors that await.

John Moss is the author of two dozen books, including Invisible Among the Ruins and Being Fiction, a collection of short stories. Moss is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a scuba diving instructor. He lives in Peterborough, Ontario.

In this story of love and loss, Tibor Schroeder, a Christian and reservist in the Hungarian forces allied with Nazi Germany, and Hedy Weisz, a young Jewish woman, meet and fall in love during the Second World War — a time when romantic liaisons and marriage between Christians and Jews were not only frowned upon, but against the law.

Not knowing of the dangers that await them, Tibor and Hedy pledge their lives to each only to be torn apart when Hedy and her family are herded into one of the ghettos in Nagyszollos. Twenty-five years pass before the lovers are finally reunited in Canada.

Based on true events, this sprawling saga of love, hope, courage, and redemption will stay with readers long after they finish the book. A movie based on this story is scheduled for release in March 2009 from Postmodern Productions.

Lemon-Aid guides are unlike any other car and truck books on the market. Phil Edmonston, Canada’s automotive “Dr. Phil” for more than 35 years, pulls no punches. For the first time in one volume he covers all used vehicles, packing this guide with insider tips to help the consumer make the safest and cheapest choice possible from cars and trucks of the past 25 years.

Like five books in one, Lemon-Aid Used Cars and Trucks 2009–10 is an exposé of car scams and gas consumption lies; a do-it-yourself service manual; an independent guide that covers beaters, lemons, and collectibles; an archive of secret service bulletins granting free repairs; and a legal primer that even lawyers can’t beat! Phil delivers the goods on free fixes for Chrysler, Ford, and GM engine, transmission, brake, and paint defects; gives the lowdown on Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota engines and transmissions; and provides the latest information on computer module glitches.

Phil Edmonston, Canada’s toughest customer, is a former Member of Parliament and Consumers Union Board Member. Over almost 40 years, he has written more than 130 Lemon-Aid bestsellers. About three decades ago, Nissan and Honda sued Phil for $5 million — and lost. Currently, he lives in Panama.

Aging Is Living tells the personal stories of residents who show, contrary to popular perception, what an inspiring and interesting life you can have in these caring communities. The book contains the inspirational, informative stories of 25 long-term-care residents, including a wood carver, a holocaust survivor, and a seniors’ advocate. They all write candidly about the joys and difficulties of living with aging and the role of long-term care in their lives. Through interviews and candid photographs, particular emphasis is placed on the positive facets of these lives: pursuing personal interests, remaining connected to personal values and relationships, and sharing this insight with others.

Aging Is Living shows in prose and photographs the many men and women who lead productive and satisfying lives in a long-term-care home. This encouraging approach and personal stories provide a positive reflection behind an affirmative legacy for family and friends.

Irene Borins Ash is a social worker, speaker, and photographer whose focus is on helping seniors develop a positive attitude toward aging. She is the author of Treasured Legacies. Irv Ash is a professor at Seneca College. They live in Toronto.

Smoking doesn’t have to leave you at a dead end. This unique book provides insight, whether you are a current or past smoker, on how to reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke before it’s too late. Rather than telling you to quit smoking, Dr. Fenske instead suggests you make changes in your life while you quit, by focusing on how the cardiovascular system is susceptible to disease, and how its healthy function can be optimized independent of smoking.

Humorous and informative, While You Quit asks you to take a series of small, intentional steps toward vascular health. Armed with a state-of-the-art perspective on vascular biology, you follow Peter, an overweight, cigarette-addicted patient, as he takes these small strides. You will see clearly how each improvement directly impacts his vital statistics — just as they will for you, even if quitting isn’t on your road map yet.

Dr. Theodore Fenske is an associate clinical professor in the division of cardiology at the University of Alberta Medical School and a cardiologist on the frontlines of medicine in a busy downtown Edmonton tertiary care health centre. He lives in Edmonton.

Dr. William Dafoe is regional director of Capital Health Cardiac Rehabilitation, the founding president of the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation, and secretary of the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Council of the World Health Federation.

The area that became Quetico Park in northwestern Ontario celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2009. Long recognized as a gem among parks, Quetico contains some of the largest stands of old-growth red and white pine in Canada, as well as a diversity of fascinating lichens, carnivorous plants in specialized habitats, and many species of orchids.

The author presents an insightful look into Quetico’s natural history as he examines the adapations that have allowed moose, white-tailed deer, wolves, and other mammals to survive. The human history of the park is also explored, beginning with the Objiwa living there when the area was designated as a park, followed by accounts of trappers, loggers, miners, park rangers, and poachers.

Beginning with the retreat of the glaciers, the author combines his thorough research into Quetico’s long and varied history with the threads of his own extensive involvement with the park. The result is a splendid tribute to a very special place.

Jon Nelson worked as a park ranger in Quetico from 1976 to 1987. He has written numerous articles for ON Nature, Lake Superior Magazine, the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal, and the Globe and Mail. He lives in Thunder Bay.

In 1755, on the eve of the Seven Years’ War, 15-year-old Nola and her Acadian parents face expulsion from Grand Pré by the British. Nola, her friends Hector and Jocelyne, Nola’s grandfather, and a band of bold teenagers manage to flee by boat only to encounter challenges tougher than their wildest imaginings. Their destination is French-occupied Fort Louisbourg, but along the way hostile soldiers, a harsh environment, enigmatic Mi’kmaq, and superpowers at war turn their journey into a series of hair-raising adventures.

As it turns out, the runaways’ route to freedom may be rudimentary technology. Using raw gypsum, limestone, coal, and salt, they forge coal-oil fire bombs that keep their attackers at bay for a short time, but not long enough to ensure their survival.

Will the resourceful teenagers finally discover what it takes to prevail in a continent poised on the edge of irrevocable change?

Jack Mercury is a teen sports hero. At 17 years old he is one of the fastest long-distance runners in Canada. But Jack just can’t seem to catch another teen wonder, Tom Longboat. Dubbed the Caledonia Cyclone, Longboat has become famous by defeating some of the world’s best runners at the 1906 Hamilton Marathon. Experts predict that Longboat may be Canada’s best hope for the 1907 Boston Marathon and maybe even the 1908 Olympic Marathon in London, England.

But not everyone is happy to see a shy Onondagan kid from the Six Nations Reserve winning gold and glory. Almost as soon as he wins his first medal, Longboat is smeared with racist nicknames and rumours by jealous competitors and the cynical media. Despite their rivalry, Jack and Tom become good friends, and as a fellow runner, Jack witnesses Longboat’s roller-coaster career from the racecourse to the muddy trenches of First World War France.

Steve Pitt’s first children’s book, Rain Tonight, was nominated for the Silver Birch, Red Cedar, and Rocky Mountain Awards. Recently, he published To Stand and Fight Together and Day of the Flying Fox. He lives in Toronto.

Tragedy strikes when crops fail and typhus spreads, killing one of the boys in her school and then her brother, Rory.

With soldiers evicting the ill and unemployed, the Quinlans are forced to accept the offer of a passage to Canada. Appalling conditions onboard contribute to many deaths so that by the time they reach Grosse Île, Quebec, Bridget and her sister are alone in the world. On June 5, 1813, Billy spots the massive American forces camped in the tiny hamlet of Stoney Creek. Against all odds, the young man rides three hours in the middle of the night to Burlington Heights to warn the British. The Americans have already captured Fort George and destroyed Fort York. By chance, Garnet meets and befriends Elizabeth Tate, an elderly widow who tells Garnet that a priceless set of heirloom jewels dating back to Russian nobility may be hidden in her Victorian home. Elizabeth shows Garnet an intriguing portrait of her late mother-in-law, Sofia Tate, wearing sapphires and diamonds.

Garnet is introduced to Dan Peters, one of the most popular boys at school, and when Elizabeth suffers a heart attack, Garnet persuades him to help her find the jewels for Elizabeth. Do the jewels really exist? Garnet believes they do, and drawing on that faith, she follows the clues left by Elizabeth’s late eccentric, religious father-in-law and discovers much more than she bargained for.
