FOREWOR D
Wherever piping is subject to vertical movement, a simple rigid hange r can only provide proper support for the pipe in one position . Th e function of a spring hanger is to provide continuous support for th e pipe in all positions and relieve pipe stresses which could reach critica l proportions in the pipe itself or in connected equipment . The purpose of this catalog is to provide clearly detailed informatio n from which suitable spring units can be selected for the widest possibl e variety of applications . Our engineering staff will be pleased to review your pipe suspensio n problems with you, whether they apply to high temperature power plan t piping or to cryogenic applications with temperatures to -320 F .

COLD POSITION SPRING PRINCIPL E
HOT POSITION
The RIGID ,00` SPRING employs a unique design which overcomes the many difficulties inherent i n the installation of variable spring hangers . The helical spring in each unit is pre-set in our shop to the pipe "cold load" position and is locke d against deflection UP or DOWN* until the pipe line is ready for operation, at which time the side locking bolts are removed . The RIGID
r SPRING therefore provides support to the pipe ;(1) In its installed (COLD) position . (2) During expansion from COLD to HOT position . (3) At its operating'(HOT) position .
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION S SPRING as if it were a component part of a simple rigid pipe hanger . Take u p Install the RIGID all slack in the hanger rod, and then tighten the upper and lower hanger rod lock nuts . After the pipe line and all hangers are completely erected, and the hydrostatic test made, remove th e side-locking bolts from the housing and the spring is free to deflect . Without further adjustment the spring will accurately support the pipe as the pipe expands to it s operating (HOT) position . In event that the pipe line is required to be dismantled, replace the side-locking bolts in the RIGI D ~ SPRING housing and the spring unit can be easily removed and stpred for re-use . The sprin g locking feature eliminates the need for extra long hanger rod threads and their tendency to strip whe n being turned under heavy spring loads . *An exclusive patent of Piping Specialties, Inc . * PATENTED Manufactured in Canada under exclusive Canadian Licence from Piping Specialties Inc ., New York . s- l

SPRIN GTYPICAL APPLICATION S L--
r
Helical steel springs are pre-compressed to conserv e headroom . All springs are calibrated and pre- set to the pip e "COLD" load before shipment . Each unit is furnished with a metal load indicato r scale easily readable from a distance . A welded steel housing protects the spring and allows full view of the spring operation through its full rang e of movement . The turnbuckle affords ample adjustment for the R H threaded lower hanger rod . A heavy coat of high quality paint protects the uni t against corrosion and rust . The unit is installed as a simple rigid hanger . The spring is positively locked against UP or DOWN * movement until the pipe line is ready to operate .n

GENERAL INFORMATIO N RIGID SPRINGS are manufactured in three (3 ) major groups, identified as Figs . 805, 810 and 820 . Each spring Figure No . is available in eight (8 ) standard Types to satisfy various applications, an d in 21 different sizes to accommodate pipe load s ranging from 53 lb to 28,680 lb . SPRIN G
Design details of our eight (8) standard Type s of RIGID SPRING assemblies are illustrated here . Type A is equipped with a RH tapped connectio n for the upper hanger rod . The turnbuckle permits ample adjustment for the RH threaded lower hanger rod at all deflection positions of th e spring . Type B and Type C are furnished with one and tw o upper plates welded to the top of the spring housing to permit bolted assembly to our standard Fig 530 or Fig 128 upper attachments . Type B may also be used with a Beam Clamp . Type D and Type E are adaptations of the standar d design for installation on structural channel s spaced back to back to allow clearance for th e hanger rod. Type F is an adjustable base mounted spring fo r the support of base elbows or horizontal pipe s from beneath . The assembly is available wit h any form of modified upper connection . Type G and Type H trapeze spring hangers ar e for suspension of horizontal pipe lines . Turn buckles provide adjustment for RH threade d hanger rods . All RIGID ,V SPRING assemblies are furnishe d with our patented load-locking device which prevent s spring deflection UP or DOWN until the side-lockin g bolts are withdrawn .

SPRING SELECTION PROCEDUR EThe Selection Procedure and a typical Example are outlined here for your use . PROCEDUR E 1 . Calculate the actual pipe weight to be sup ported and tabulate as the pipe operatin g (HOT) load . 2. Calculate amount and direction of pipe vertical movement from COLD to HOT position . 3. Select Spring Figure No ., applying movement within limitations as recommended hereo n for approximate spring variability of 20% ; Recom max pipe vertical mvmt 1/2" 1" 2" Use Spring Fig . 1 . Data : Calculated (HOT) load = 600 lb s
2 . Data : Pipe movemen t (COLD to HOT) = 7/8" U P 3 . Select Fig 810 Spring (since pipe movemen t is less than 1") .
Or determine permissible hanger load variation between COLD and HOT condition to sui t particular specifications . 4. Locate suitable HOT spring load in Table o n page s-5 and select corresponding Sprin g Size Number . 5. To find COLD load, read from the Table o n page s-5 by reversing the direction of pip e movement . 4. 600 lb load is in column headed Spring Siz e No . 8 .

LOAD-DEFLECTIO N TABL E
RIGID .~` SPRINGThe RIGID .' SPRING Load-Deflection tabl e shown on this page is a graphic chart of sprin g deflections from minimum load to maximu m load positions . RESERVED AREA (gray) A portion of the total available deflection at each end of the sprin g movement is reserved to provide for some unde r or over-loading due to insulation, fittings o r valves which may be lighter or heavier tha n anticipated . WORKING RANGE (white) The white area in th e central portion of the chart represents the sprin g working range . Both HOT and COLD load positions must be in the same vertical column unde r Spring Size, and within the actual working range . RATED LOAD We recommend that every spring which is selected operate as closely as passibl e to its RATED LOAD shown in boldface type an d located in the middle of the working range . SPRING DEFLECTION The actual spring deflection s in inches and fractions for the three groups o f RIGID ,.' SPRINGS are listed vertically in the outside columns . Posted directly against th e deflections are the supporting forces exerte d by the springs throughout their full operatin g range . SPRING SCALE The spring scale of each spring i s shown across the bottom of the table and indicates the spring flexibility in pounds per inc h of deflection .

All turnbuckles are tapped RH National coarse threa d and allow ample adjustment for hanger rod . *Rated loads shown in the data table are at the mid point of the spring working range . See page s-5 . tType E assembly is furnished with turnbuckle . Field weld nut to top of upper hanger rod and field weld ro d to turnbuckle . RWhen selecting spring size for Type G and Type H trapeze assemblies, note that each spring carries hal f of the total pipe hanger load . o Shipping weights of Type G and Type H assemblies ar e based upon 24 inch C . to C . dimension .
