In the last few months the Social Ministry Department at St. John’s has partnered with Catholic Charities in service to the families asking for financial assistance. Volunteers at our office speak to clients asking for assistance to better understand the circumstances for the instability they face. Clients are helped financially and those who fit specific criteria are then referred to a new program at Catholic Charities. This tested and successful program addresses issues that the family faces, which are unique to each family. In collaboration with the family, goals are set and addressed to provide these families with the resources they need to break barriers keeping them trapped in the cycle of poverty. We have referred 7 families to the program and 6 of these families have been approved and are actively working to create a sustainable, stable life. It has been very rewarding to know that these families are moving out of poverty because of the partnership our parish shares with Catholic Charities. We are grateful to our parishioners for supporting Social Ministry to make this possible.

Many Thanks

We have had many funerals lately with families requesting a meal afterwards. We are very grateful to Rosemary and Art Serrano and their team for all the effort they make to ensure that grieving families have a warm comfortable space to enjoy a meal with their family after the funeral. This is usually done on short notice with lots of small details to be managed. It is a small way that we can assist families during this very difficult time and we appreciate the service of all the volunteers.

Food Pantry

Because of the very cold temperatures this week, we saw fewer clients than normal. That means we have only a few things we are short on. We appreciate any donations of:

Laundry Detergent Pasta Sauce Ramen Noodles

Crackers Toothpaste

Baby World

We are very short on diapers size 3 and 6. We depend upon the generosity of parishioners to help us provide these basic needs to our clients at Baby World and we appreciate all the donations we receive.

Reminder! We do not have room to store adult clothing and have had MANY donations lately. Please find a good home for them at another agency such as the Women’s Shelter or Goodwill.

Catholicism: The Pivotal Players

Please join a group of parishioners on Thursday mornings as we study the life of Flannery O’Connor. You can participate in both of the sessions, or drop in for just one session. Thursdays from 9:15 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. For more information, contact Donna Chesshir at [email protected] or at the Parish Office at (817) 284-4811.

Stewardship ReflectionSixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.Matthew 5:20The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear–it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.
