Representations

Page 2: Specific examples of representations

GenderThe female on the front of this magazine is not represented stereotypically. She is depicted in dark clothing, looking away from the camera. When compared to conventional magazines, such as top of the pops, this is the opposite of what you would find. I think this break from the stereotypes of women is good and plays an effective part for the magazine. The absence of colour draws her away from the background and is not what you would expect when you think about typical representations of a female.I believe, while being conventional for the genre, it is not conventional for the gender. This break in conventions adds a different representation of women.

Why have I done this?

• The representation I was aiming for was a dark one. This is represented by her clothing.

– I was also hoping to have her stand out from the backdrop in such a way that it shows darkness can also stand out in certain situations.

– I believe that the lack of stereotypes depicted by this woman makes her stand out in an unconventional way.

AgeThe age of the woman on my front cover is stereotypical in most aspects. The use of the guitar as a prop is stereotypical for teenagers, as well as a range of other factors. The dark clothing, while not being stereotypical for females is stereotypical for that age group. It is a fashion statement – something typically found in teens who are interested in certain types of music. The sullen look away from the camera also is stereotypical of teenagers. This expressionless blatant face away from any publicity is seen as extremely stereotypical.Apart from the woman, the use of a distorted and distressed font for the masthead is conventional and would appeal to a younger target audience.

Why have I done this?

• I have chosen to do this and stick to stereotypes of age rather than gender because gender as a target audience for my product is mixed.

– The stereotypes of teenagers, my target audience, is fixed. This means that if I can tap into that aspect of my audience and apply it to my magazine, it will appeal to more people.

– Male or female, viewers of a certain age will mostly all connect with my magazine and have it appeal to them as individuals.
