Shift #1: “Digital Natives”
From this … … to this?
EDUC W200 Week 2
When Shifts Collide
• Standards and accountability• We talked about students (so-called “digital
natives”)• Now, let’s talk about administrators,
authorities, etc.• You are in the middle.
EDUC W200 Week 2
No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
EDUC W200 Week 2
Key elements of NCLB
• States must develop their own accountability systems (largely standardized tests).
• Schools must make “adequate yearly progress” in standardized test scores. (Those that don’t are put on a published list of “failing schools,” and parents can transfer their students to another school.)
• All teachers must be “highly qualified” (by 2005).• Schools must use “scientifically based” practices
and methods.• Students must be “technology-literate” by eighth
grade.
EDUC W200 Week 2
NCLB & Academic Standards
• Main reasons for academic standards …• To make sure students are learning what they’re
supposed to learn at a particular level • To clearly measure student outcomes
o “The standards-based education reform, setting high standards and establishing measurable goals will improve students’ outcomes”
o “Whatever each state decides students will learn, each school must prove that students are learning it.”
EDUC W200 Week 2
Thus… Technology in Standards-Based Education
• Administrators, parents and students have expectations about technology use in the classroom.
• Your students need to meet state standards.• It is important for you to know how to
integrate technology into your classroom based on the standards.
• And that’s what w200 is all about!
EDUC W200 Week 2
Solutions…
• But what about individualized learning and customized learning? How can you meet the standards and your students’ needs?
• Webquests are one solution.
EDUC W200 Week 2
Inquiry Oriented Lessons: Webquest
EDUC W200 Week 2
What is a Webquest?
• A video created by one of former W200 students on Webquest:
EDUC W200 Week 2
What is a Webquest?
• In short… Webquest is “an inquiry-oriented lesson for individual learning in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web. ”
o Teachers will give a task to students to work on either individually or as a group.
o Teachers will provide information and appropriate resources needed to accomplish that task.
EDUC W200 Week 2
What a WebQuest is composed of…
EDUC W200 Week 2
Why Webquests?
• Webquests allow:• students to learn at their own pace and on their
own (but all students learn the same content),• teachers to be free from the role of presenter, • teachers to give individual assistance to those in
need.
EDUC W200 Week 2
How do you make a WebQuest?
Technology tools
• Templateso Quest Gardeno Zunal.com
• Website building tools o Google Siteso Weeblyo Yola
• Otherso Google Docs
Pedagogical Knowledge
• Devising a task through which students will meet the learning goals.
• Providing appropriate guidelines and resources
• Providing self-assessment tools Knowledge of the topic

EDUC W200 Week 2
In-Class Workout #2: Digital Natives Webquest
• Go to the Webquest on “Digital Natives” and follow each step to create an Xtranormal video.
• Using Xtranormal, you can create a video by just typing text.
• Think back to video you watched for the class-prep activity.
• Note: Xtranormal job-aids are on the w200 website
EDUC W200 Week 2
REMEMBER!
• Save your entire script in a Word document• Give yourself enough time to encode the video,
as video processing takes time with online tools.• Do not change any of the settings when the
program loads. It will only let you save if you use the defaults.
• Xtranormal is not a free service. However, every new account comes with 300XP free. The “points widget” near the top shows how many xtranormal points (XP) you have available and how many you’ll need for your movie. Make sure you do not exceed 300XP to create and publish your movie.
EDUC W200 Week 2
Submitting your In-Class Workout #2
• ULA Demoo Publish the movieo Embed the movie: Teacher Website > About Me
• Submit the link to Teacher Website > “About Me” page to Oncourse > Assignments > In-Class Workout #2 (ICW #2)

EDUC W200 Week 2
Peer Feedback: Digital Story Script

are telling a story.• Update your script based on my feedback and your
partner’s feedback before you start your storyboard!
• Make sure your script is an appropriate length (2 to 2 ½ min.).
• See the iRubric for more detail on what is expected.
EDUC W200 Week 2
Next Step: Creating Storyboards
• What is a storyboard?o A storyboard is a plan that you follow as you create your
digital story.• Create your own storyboard:• Draw pictures and write on a paper-based template (Note:
