“A lot of artists work with found objects, but architectural mash-up with found furniture, I don’t know of anyone doing like that,” said Ted Lott. Indeed, when you see the architectural artwork of Ted Lott for the first time, the experience is probably akin to the flash of inspiration he originally had that led him to create his genre. Antique and vintage chairs, rocking chairs, tables, piano stools, lamps, and even a dress form have all inspired him to make architectural-antique art. “The first piece I created was at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Colorado where I was in a three-month artist residency. I was working in an architect vein, delving into new ideas in wood working. A staff member there had salvaged an old mahogany chair from his grandparent’s house and meant to restore it. But it had been outside for a few Colorado winters and was in rough condition. It was structurally solid, though, with turned legs like columns and great arms that looked like buttresses. I was inspired by that piece so I asked, and he said I could have it. “I was in the last couple of weeks of my residency, and one day, I suddenly had a flash of what to do with the chair. I made

With Sit/Stay, Lott found his muse and went on to create ten more pieces that he christened the “Habitation Series.” Numbering them rather than naming them, Habitation #1 was made in 2012 from a pine table he found. It features grand Palladian windows and a roofwalk, or widow’s walk, with a balustrade.

In true collector fashion, Lott searches for pieces that inspire him.

“I go out to antique and thrift stores, yard sales and rummage sales. The piece with the rope ladder is an old piano stool with threaded wooden rods and a column of nice old walnut that I found at a thrift store. It was in such bad shape that they put it outside with a “Free” sign on it. I cleaned it up and put a finish on it. I stripped off the off old horse hair upholstery before transforming it.” It became Habitation #10.

As his work is becoming known, he is acquiring found art in other ways.

“As I have progressed in the series, people have started giving me pieces of furniture. I had an exhibition at the University of South Carolina in Charlotte so I shipped some of my work there. When it was shipped back, an antique rocking chair was in with the pieces—not a Chippendale, but a nice chair.” So how does the public feel about the work of Ted Lott? “I am getting a lot of great response, really interesting press via the magic of the Internet. I have seen my work on a French design website and on a Chinese website. People love it. My favorite thing is for people to see my work in person—really sticking their faces up to it—and feeling them relate to it as a piece of furniture on that scale and as architecture on that scale.”

By day, Lott works as a designer for a firm that builds new homes and restores historical homes in Cooperstown, N.Y. He designs some furniture there, “…which I love because it ties into my studio work.” While many in the Habitation Series feature new home designs (reflecting his other profession, for the moment), vintage styles and even Victorian architectural cues can be seen, as in the winding stairs of Keeper, which was made from a lamp with a four lights.

Lott has happened upon more found art that has inspired him to create a second series, again with an artistic epiphany.

“I collect old luggage cases. Originally, I didn’t have a particular idea in mind…until I had a case sitting in front of me one day. It was an old wooden case with metal sides, and inside it were old roller skates. I was suddenly struck by the architecture of the case, so I created Migration #1 in 2014.”

All nine pieces of the “Migration Series” are built-in “homes” of one sort or another, and all are illuminated inside.

Lott has moved around often in his life. Born and raised on the shores of Lake Michigan, he has lived in twelve


states and visited all states except Alaska. The thought of creating a moveable house that you can actually carry with you hit home with him, so to speak. “I had an impulse to make smaller work. I had been making furniture-sized pieces, and as an artist, I move around a lot. When you make larger work, it is burdensome, especially to ship to exhibitions. With this, I am working in an interesting and fulfilling way and not spending three months on a single piece.” Many of the old vintage cases are made of wood with leather or faux leather, which facilitated Lott’s construction. He doesn’t use glue. Instead, he employs a small pneumatic nailer, “…the same method as in building a house. The fact that the cases were made of wood makes it easy to nail right to them, which I love.” Lott is working on more Migration pieces, but these will be created so they can be hung on walls. He also has more artwork to come. One series involves vintage books. With book covers that he loves, he cuts an aperture or window through the cover to a picture he likes in the book. Then, he frames out the window. Lott is also planning a totally different series, one without wood and using ceramics, glass and other domestic objects.

“I am looking for objects that speak to those categories and how they fit in a domestic sphere by building architecture around them.” While not as functional or as famous as the works of George Nakashima or Frank Lloyd Wright, Ted Lott’s view of architecture and his creativity and style follow in their footsteps—just on a smaller scale. --------------Ted Lott received his M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his B.F.A. from the Maine College of Art. A Collector’s Art: The Portraiture of James Pruett by Mike McLeod

Many talented artists paint portraits of famous people. However, James Pruett went a step further. He not only painted portraits of 51 famous people—eight Presidents of the United States, one U.S. Vice President, a German Chancellor, a First Lady of China, three governors, two senators, actors, sports pros, a New York City mayor—he also sent his work to those famous people for

their autographs…and he included a felt-tipped pen for the signing. J. Edgar Hoover autographed his portrait and actually returned the pen. Was he really that honest, or did he know that the pen would also be collectible after he touched it?

Two people did not sign their portraits: Maria von Trapp and Norman Rockwell. Maria didn’t approve of her likeness. To be fair, James painted it later in life when his eyesight was deteriorating. Norman Rockwell explained that if he signed it, people might assume it was a self-portrait, which was actually a compliment to James’ work. But

Rockwell was kind enough to include his autograph on a separate piece of canvas, which James displayed with the portrait. James actually met Norman Rockwell in person to request the signature. He also asked Rockwell to autograph a white plastic bag he had from the Rockwell Gallery and Gift Shop. Not only did he sign it, but he also drew the figure of a dog on the bag—a Norman Rockwell original. James Pruett was born in 1908 in the tiny town of Smithville, Ga., between Macon and Albany. From 1941 until his retirement in 1973, he was the CEO of Capital Trailways Bus System and Colonial Trailways in Montgomery, Ala.

He was greatly involved in civic affairs, including serving as the President of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce and the founder of the South Alabama Fair. James secured the signature of President Lyndon Johnson on his portrait in a roundabout way. As CEO of Capital Trailways, he was a friend of the president of Continental Trailways in Dallas, who knew LBJ and had no problem getting the autograph. LBJ signed the painting and sent it back to James right away. Not long thereafter, the local newspaper in Montgomery carried a story of how President Johnson had rejected the official White House portrait…but not James Pruett’s. The paper did not report—and probably did not know—that the signing of James’ portrait of LBJ had a little political oomph behind it. Another of James’ presidential portraits also needed some extra help to get an autograph. President Dwight D. Eisenhower rarely signed likenesses of himself because he equated that with Hollywood and movie stars, which he disliked. To get his signature, James approached a next-door neighbor, Red Blount. Winton “Red” Blount was US Postmaster General during Richard Nixon’s presidency, and he was also Ike’s southeastern campaign manager during his run for the presidency. Red took the portrait to Washington, D.C., and personally asked former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to sign it. This portrait with its hard-to-get signature is perhaps the most valuable in the collection. Another valuable signed portrait is of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin (the first men on the moon) and Michael Collins (who stayed in orbit). James Pruett began drawing in 1927. His talent expanded from sketching to portraiture, and his favorite style of painting was monochrome, using different shades of the same color. His collection of celebrities is a Who’s Who from decades of American history. A partial list of notables in his collection includes:

James was so dead set on getting his paintings autographed that he once went to prison for one. Again going to his friend Red Blount, James asked him to get former US Attorney General John Mitchell to sign his portrait. At the time, Mitchell was serving time in the minimum security prison at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery for his part in Watergate. Blount responded he would do it—and he invited James to go along. There, in the prison, John Mitchell autographed his portrait.* James Pruett passed away in 1992. His collection has passed into the possession of his sons Kirby and Jim Pruett, and the brothers are looking for a new home for it. The collection has been displayed at the Montgomery County Historical Society, and now, a few of James’ portraits are here for you to enjoy.------------* Lest John Mitchell be remembered unfairly here, it should be known that he served three years in the Navy in WWII and was a PT boat commander. After passing away in 1988, in his eulogy it was “…pointed out that near the Mitchell grave in Arlington [National Cemetery] was the headstone of Col. Gregory (Pappy) Boyington [of the Black Sheep Squadron], a Medal of Honor winner who used to call John Mitchell every year to thank him for saving his life. [Mitchell] never

spoke of his war record; such modesty is rare in politics, but exploitation of his naval service would have been out of character.” From NYT.com, “ESSAY; Watch What We Do,” by William Safire, Nov. 14, 1988.

A 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps rookie baseball card, graded in Near Mint to Mint 8 condition, sold for $501,900 at a Platinum Night Sports Event held Feb. 20-21 by Heritage Auctions (based in Dallas, Tex.) in New York City. Also, a 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie baseball card, graded PSA Mint 9, went for $478,000; Jerry Kramer’s 1967 Green Bay Packers Super Bowl I championship ring realized $125,475; and the first contract Mickey Mantle

signed with the Yankees, in 1949 at age 17, hit $119,500. Prices include a 19.5 percent buyer’s premium.

J. K. Rowling chair,$394,000, Heritage

The chair used by author J. K. Rowling to write the first two Harry Potter books – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – sold for $394,000 at a Rare Books Auction held April 6 by Heritage Auctions (based in Dallas, Tex.) in New York City. Rowling used gold, rose and green paints to transform the chair into a piece of literary memorabilia. It previously sold at auction in 2002, when it fetched $21,000. The $394,000 price includes the buyer’s premium.

journal that then 23-year-old George Washington kept and which was published in the March 1754 issue of The Maryland Gazette sold for $173,000 at an auction held April 11 by Bonhams in New York. In the article, Washington, then a Virginia land surveyor, described how he tried (and failed) to get the French to withdraw from the Ohio River Valley. Franz Bischoff painting,$180,000, John Moran A large-scale composition by the Pasadena, Calif., artist Franz Bischoff (1864-1929) titled, Sand Dunes and Pines, Monterey Coast, Calif., sold for $180,000 at a California and American Fine Art Auction held March 22 by John Moran Antique & Fine Art Auctioneers in Monrovia, Calif. Also, Cheese Mold Standard with Olive by Los Angeles artist Edward Ruscha (b. 1937) realized $66,000; and Yellow Harbor, Deep by Paul Resika (N.Y., b. 1928) went for $33,000, a new auction record for the artist. Prices include a 20 percent buyer’s premium.

Miniature swan lamp,$6,325, Jeffrey S. Evans A rare swan figural miniature lamp with original shade, circa 1875, sold for $6,325 at an auction held March 12 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mt. Crawford, Va. Also, one of three recorded bisque elf figural miniature lamps illuminated the room for $4,600; a fine latticinio font stand lamp with period burner and chimney lit up the crowd for $1,725; a cased glass student lamp shade decorated in the manner of Thomas Webb brought $1,380; and a brass skater’s lantern with rare amethyst globe rose to $633. Marvel’s Star Wars #1,$7,200, PBA Galleries A very fine copy of Marvel’s Star Wars #1 comic book from 1977, the rare 35-cent variant, sold for $7,200 at an auction of books and comic books held March 24 by PBA Galleries in San Francisco, Calif. Also, a pristine copy of the first printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 brought $3,900; a copy of Dick Lupoff’s history of comics, All in Color for a Dime, hammered for $1,440; a nice copy of Giant Size X-Men #1 topped out at $1,080; and copies of Flash #101 and Flash #104 sold as one lot for $2,700. June 1, 1938: Superman arrived on Earth in Action Comics #1, thanks to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Featuring the Man of Steel hefting a green car of steel on the cover, a 9.0-graded copy flew off eBay for $3.2 million in 2014.June 1, 1926: The birthday of Norman Jean Mortenson/Marilyn Monroe. Also, see June 18 and June 27. June 3, 2011: Marshal Matt Dillon rode off into the sunset. James Arness at the age of 88 passed away at home. Best known for his 20 seasons on TV’s Gunsmoke, Arness initially turned down the role, but John Wayne convinced him to take it (Snopes.com). High Noon Western Americana sold Marshal Dillon’s Colt .45 for $59,000 in 2014.

June 5, 1718: Thomas Chippendale was baptized; no record of his exact birth date has been found. Legendary for creating furniture, a George II Padouck cabinet-on-stand attributed to him, 1755-1760, sold at Christie’s in 2008 for $5.32 million.

June 12, 1929: Anne Frank’s birthday. Her diary is on display at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam with her other diaries and manuscripts. Name This Famous “Antique” by Mike McLeod The traditional age connoted with the word antique does not apply in the world of computers today. A decade or even less can make a computer, peripheries or games antique or vintage—although those words are rarely attributed to collectibles in this field. A computer from the 1990s is definitely considered an antique.

This motherboard truly is an antique, the first of its kind, a true dinosaur in the computer world. This is the motherboard from an Apple-1 computer. It sold at Bonhams in 2014 for $905,000 (with buyer’s premium) and included the power supply, keyboard and monitor. Others have sold for less. In 2010, an Apple-1 computer motherboard sold for $212,267 at Christie’s, and in 2012, one sold at Sotheby’s for $374,500.

This $905,000 motherboard is from the batch of the first 50 Apple-1 computers built by Steve Wozniak and sold by Steve Jobs and Wozniak to the Byte Shop. The shop retailed them for $666.66 each.

The first owner of this Apple-1’s motherboard was John Barkley Anderson, and in true collector form, he recognized the historical importance of it when he bought it. Anderson stored it away, and it was safely packaged and preserved since 1989. It came with only four kilobytes of memory that could be expanded to eight or 48 KB with expansion cards—so he might as well as stored it. It was often used for playing the rudimentary games of the day. As Bonhams’ described it: “The Apple-1 computer is the first pre-assembled personal computer to come to market, heralding the dawn of the personal computer revolution.”1

To put this in perspective for us non-computer collectors:*The highest price paid for an Ansel Adams photograph, Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park, was $722,500 (including buyer’s premium) in 2010 at Sotheby’s;*Actor David Spade paid $900,000 for a restored 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona at Mecum Auctions in 2015;*The baseball Babe Ruth autographed to the ailing Johnny Sylvester—promising to hit a home run for him in a 1926 World Series game and signed, “I’ll knock a homer for Wednesday’s game” (Ruth hit three in that game)—sold for $250,641 at Grey Flannel Auctions in 20142; and * Harrison Ford’s autographed Han Solo leather jacket from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2016) sold for $191,000 in a

Of the 63 Apple-1 computers known to exist, most do not work. The motherboard was powered up on this one to show it still functioned properly. Antique video games are also growing in values. In 2010, a copy of Air Raid for the Atari 2600 that was found a garage sold on eBay for $31,600. It was reported to be the 13th known copy in existence.4 As always, the value of any collectible or antique is what someone is willing to pay for it. $1,426.45 (25 bids, 10 bidders): Solid Silver Shooting Butt Marker, London 1899. A beautiful condition, rare, late Victorian solid silver game shooting butt marker, which was made by London silversmith John Milward Banks and is fully hallmarked with full London assay office silver stamps that date it to 1899, the reign of Queen Victoria. The butt marker is engraved to the side of its excellent condition solid silver case with the following: “The Sportsman’s pathfinder, Albert Barker London W. Pat. No. 22108.” It is in excellent working order, opening and closing correctly. Once open, fanning out to reveal its original 8 numbered solid silver pegs within a fully gilded interior. shooting position, or order, of the shooters. This was determined by the drawing of the numbered peg. These antique markers have become very collectible, and this seems like a very good price to buy one. I have only seen retail prices for this type of object, and those prices have been at least four times this price.

1930. There are many collectors of match safes. This is a high price for a sterling match safe, maybe because there are so many match safes! That this is a specific one for advertising seems to make it more valuable.

$1,035.10 (27 bids, 12 bidders): 1/6th Plate Daguerreotype Photo in Case, Soldier Uniform, ID’ed Otis W. Willis. Up for sale is a vintage 1/6th plate daguerreotype photo in case (a mirror-like image printed on a silver-plated copper plate). The image is not sealed. It has some wear, discoloration

and corrosion. There is a note pinned to the inside front cover marked, “Otis Winchester Willis About 25 Year Old.” The case has a split hinge, has some warping, and has rough, torn, missing covering. The case is about 3 1/8 by 3 5/8 inches. (Photo: eBay seller patrik_ca) DBA: This price is on the high side for a daguerreotype, but not the highest that I have ever seen. The higher prices are usually beautiful women, family groups, especially children, and soldiers. This process was used mainly from 1839 to 1860, being quickly replaced by less expensive processes. That this picture

is identified by the name of the person makes it more valuable. This type of photograph is very easily damaged, and while this one has some condition issues, it is in better shape than most.

What is this?

For at least 2,000 years, wooden barrels have been used to ship goods; even the Romans, the Celts and the Egyptians were coopers. Barrels were the perfect transportation package. They held large quantities of commodities, and they were relatively easy to move by rolling. To distinguish contents and show ownership, barrels had to be marked. As businesses moved to mass production, hand marking of barrels took too long. Stencils were created to paint the tops

He sailed on to New Zealand, which he mapped, and then onto Australia, being the first European to land there, as far as records show. Consequently, Australia became a British colony. On his third voyage to the Pacific, Capt. Cook landed on Hawaii in 1778. After first contact there, he sailed north to find a northwest passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Failing that but mapping much of the Alaskan coast and the Northeast, he returned to the Hawaiian Islands in 1779, which he named the Sandwich Islands after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich and the head of the British Navy’s Admiralty. In Hawaii, one his ship’s small boats was taken, and Cook endeavored unsuccessfully to get it back. He then went to the take the Hawaiian King Kalani̒ ōpuʻu and was attacked and killed on February 14, 1779. Four of his ship’s marines were also killed at this time. Name This Famous Person: Captain James Cook by Mike McLeod

In the photo, Captain James Cook is holding a map for a specific reason—he was a great cartographer. He mapped Newfoundland, the east coast of Australia, New Zealand, and many islands during his three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, north and south. He was also a great mariner; he circumnavigated the world. Born in Yorkshire, England,

on October 27, 1778, into a farming family, Cook eventually began his naval career working on a ship hauling coal. He then moved onto other ships as a merchant sailor and then in 1755, he enlisted in the Royal Navy. In 1768, Cook was commissioned a lieutenant and given the command of a ship for a scientific mission to Tahiti to map the transit of Venus across the sun happening in 1769. This endeavor was to gather the data needed for determining longitude on a worldwide basis. At the same time, many astronomers around the world were also charting Venus’ transit, but none were successful. However, Cook also had a secret mission on this voyage that was successful. After the observation of the transit, Cook opened orders from the Admiralty directing him to find the then-postulated land of Australia.

The actual spear that was used in the attack on him was reportedly taken by an officer on board Cook’s ship Endeavor, and it was later made into a walking cane. That cane was sold at auction by Lyon & Turnbull in the U.K. for £135 in 2003. The cane was gold-mounted and engraved with: “From Adml. C.B.H. Ross C.B. To Admiral Sir David Milne G.C.B. Made of the spear which killed Captn. Cook R.N.” Another incredible historical piece, Capt. Cook’s Continental flintlock pistol, with a 13-inch-long barrel, was auctioned by Leski Auctions in Australia for $227,100 in 2013. A statue to James Cook stands today in Waimea, Kauai, commemorating his first contact with Hawaii.
