CHRISTMAS LIGHTS RETURN TO SIX FLAGS WITH ‘HOLIDAY IN THE PARK’

Revitalization and change is on its way in South Cobb.

In November, the Cobb Board of Com-missioners (BOC) voted 4 to 1 in favor of creating a new tax district in South Cobb. The new Six Flags Special Services Dis-trict will tax commercial property owners

an additional 3.5 mills on their property taxes beginning next year to revive the dis-trict.

This public-private partnership plans to bolster growth and improve a blighted area known for a high crime rate. The prop-erty tax revenue will be used to improve interchanges and streetscapes, providing picturesque gateways into the area. The passage of this proposal is a milestone for economic development of South Cobb.

Dana Johnson, Cobb’s deputy direc-tor of community development, said the increased tax will be levied on 237 proper-

ties, including Six Flags Over Georgia and is expected to bring in $660,000 annually.

The Council for Quality Growth hosted a South Cobb Developers Opportu-nities Lunch in September.

Former Gov. Roy Barnes has described South Cobb as a huge redevelopment opportunity not only because of its loca-tion, but also is showing great economic potential as it continues to grow and attract young families and children.

“When making money intersects with great public policy, that is a powerful force,” said Barnes. Barnes encouraged the continued support and investment in South Cobb.

To hear some of the discussions on how we should limit the exposure of Christmas in our modern American world, one could almost think that the holiday is one that we invented and can now totally shape or ignore as we choose. Schools declare the official time as a winter holi-day, yet build the calendar around Decem-ber 25 as the focus of the holiday. School children hold pageants, but unlike those in my youth, are not allowed to sing songs or read scripture that mention Christmas for fear of offending.

Yet, no matter how some try to limit the holiday, Christmas is one that is not just an American invention, but a world-wide celebration. One estimate is that Christmas is honored by some 400 million people world-wide. The traditions are deep, having developed over centuries, transformed or refined, but always centered on the birth of Christ.

In our 21st century world, where news is constant around the clock it’s hard to imagine that the news of the birth of Christ could spread from a stable in Bethlehem to Shepherds, to wise-men, to the king in a short time. From Angels to Shepherds to ordinary people, the word has continued to spread throughout all the land, generation to generation, nation to nation.

There was no “good news” news-paper like The Bright Side back in those early days; no instant multi-media com-munication. For the most part, news was spread one on one. Yet, here we are, more than 2,000 years later, with the story of the Christ child still powerfully with us.

Today, the story would be on FoxNews, CNN, national and local news with heli-copters hovering overhead and reporters out interviewing the Shepherds. The inter-view might go something like this:

REPORTER: “So, here in this field full of sheep, you claim to have seen Angels. Tell me Shepherd boy, do you have a his-tory of hallucinations or drug use?”

SHEPHERD: No, and I wasn’t dream-ing. There was one Angel with the message of the baby’s birth and then a whole host of Angels. It was an awesome sight.”

REPORTER: “Well, there you have it, a claim of Angels out here in the middle of nowhere. We’ll be checking the satel-lite images to see if they show any unusual

activity; but we think this is a hoax. Just in case, however, we have reporters on their way to find the stable and we’ll bring you updates as we have them. Now back to you in the studio.”

Of course, in our modern world, Mary and Joseph would not have had to travel to Bethlehem to pay their taxes; they could have stayed home and paid them online. We have computers and instant news cov-erage and people ready to file lawsuits over nativity scenes and songs of school children.

Yet, despite our 21st century restric-tions, the ancient story of the Christmas miracle is, for Christians around the world, as fresh and awesome as when it was first revealed to the Shepherds.

BENJAMIN ACADEMY OPENS NEW FACILITYAfter five successful years in Cobb County, the Benjamin Preparatory School of Aca-demics and Performing Arts has moved to its new facility at 2445 Church Road, Vin-ings. The school’s principal and co-founder Dr. Verna Benjamin-Lambert, a former Cobb County school administrator, is not only excited to open the doors to the new building but is excited about ushering in her promising style of early childhood learn-ing to the Cobb County/Metro Atlanta audience. Dr. Benjamin-Lambert, her staff and some of the students cut the ribbon for the new facility Nov. 13. “Our focus was to create a facility that would enhance our school’s mission, which is to prepare our students to excel on the world’s stage academically, socially and spiritually via a rig-orous academic and performing arts curriculum within a safe and supportive school environment,” she said.

NOTES & NOTICES

Heather Donahue

By Heather DonahueThis year’s holiday season will be a

little different for my family. My ex and I have decided to abandon our Par-enting Plan. I’m recovering from surgery and the kids want to be near as I heal. So, instead of fol-lowing our Parenting Plan, we are crafting a new schedule that better suits our needs.

Holidays are a time of joy and thanksgiving, but also a time of stress and heightened emotions. When you add issues with an ex-spouse to the stress of preparing for family visits, the financial strain of the holidays, you have a recipe for -- much like my failed attempt at cooking a turkey last year-- Disaster!!

As the holidays approach, it’s impor-tant to prepare to handle and minimize potential disasters. It can be helpful to revisit your family’s needs around the holi-

days. Consider these ideas:• Is it easier for your kids to alternate

years for the holidays (i.e., see Dad’s family only on Thanksgiving during even years and only on Christmas during odd years)?

• Would it better to spend a few hours at each parent’s house each holiday? Does this geograph-ically work…or will your children remember holidays as road trips?

• Can you celebrate Thanks-giving on the Friday after or Christmas on Christmas Eve to minimize travel and maximize vis-

iting time?• Don’t forget about extended family

and grandparents!‘Tis the season… to avoid disasters! Call Heather with The Merritt Firm,

LLC, for your family law needs at 770-433-9345 or email her at [email protected].

Infants – Private Kindergarten & After School

A group of Smyrna area residents is working to find a buyer for the circa 1850 Hooper-Turner House who will restore the structure and save it for future genera-tions.

This highly visible “time capsule” at 5811 Oakdale Road unifies The Historic Area of the River Line.

The River Line Historic Area stretches from Vinings to Mableton along the Chat-tahoochee River and includes historic Civil War battle sites and remnants of battle for-tifications.

“There are plans to use the house as a multipurpose community facility to edify our area’s American History, but because the Hooper-Turner House deteriorated during 10 years of vacancy, it is slated to be demolished by The City of Smyrna,” said Roberta Cook, River Line Coordi-nator. “Losing this historic treasure to homogenization diminishes the Historic Area and subtracts from the River Line Historic Area identity, character and sense of place.”

Cook urged potential buyers to con-tact The City of Smyrna Attorney, Scott Cochran at 770-435-2131 or Councilman Ron Fennel at 770-319-5312.

But city officials say they are losing patience, having held on to the structure hoping that some group would restore or move it.

“It’s an unremarkable structure with mold and asbestos problems,” said Coun-cilman Ron Fennel.

The City of Smyrna acquired the house from Ms. Frances Presley. It is a typical “hall and parlor” home, a rural design that was prevalent in the area from

1850s-era Hooper-Turner House on Oak-dale Road.

BUYER SOUGHT FOR HOOPER-TURNER HOUSE

the 1840s until the 1890s. The house was added to the Cobb County Historic Register with approval of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners on April 22, 2003 after its nomination by Ms. Presley. According to local folk lore, the house served as a Civil War hospital.

“To preserve the house, a viable buyer must make an offer before Christmas,” Cook said. To keep informed and unite with others who want to save the HT House, contact [email protected].

The earliest mention of a structure on the Oakdale property appears in a deed from 1924, which refers to the “old John Turner house place.”

The house is situated on what was the center of Confederate General Joseph Johnson’s River Line defenses of June/July 1864. The Turners’ family burial ground still stands on a hillside not far from the site where Turner’s Ferry once crossed the Chattahoochee River, known today as Veterans Memorial Hwy (previously Bank-head Highway).

CHRISTMAS CANDLE-LIGHT SERVICE SET

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, right?

When the holidays come around everyone wants to look their best. It is not too late to look good for the family and friends and photos. Veneers offer a “Hol-lywood smile” while preserving your natu-ral teeth. Bonding can close the gaps and reshape the way your teeth look. Whiten-ing can bleach away those coffee and red wine stains. And crown and bridge can restore your dentition to chew a holiday meal without discomfort. These can still be this year’s gift to yourself. All too often we spend on everyone else denying our-selves the things we really need.

Don’t forget to floss and brush this season, especially after all of the goodies that are available. If you are caught with-out a toothbrush, rinse your mouth out and chew ADA approved sugarless chewing

gum. This will help remove some of the food that builds up quickly. Enjoy but stay healthy.

Call for a free oral camera consultation with Dr. Hudson 770-438-1520. Your smile always says a lot. Happy Holidays from Hudson Dental Care!

Tip: Remember, for those that are for-tunate enough to have dental plans on a calendar year policy, it’s “use it or lose it.” Once the year flips, this year’s benefits are gone.

Felicia Lee is the 2014 recipient of the Susan-Hughes Citron Memorial Scholar-ship. Tod Citron, son of Susan Hughes-Citron and the Executive Director of the Cobb & Douglas Community Service Boards, presents Ms. Lee with a plaque to recognize her accomplishment.

Susan Hughes-Citron was a Chemi-cal Dependency Counselor from Min-nesota, who relocated to Atlanta in 2006. She passed away in 2012 at the age of 71 after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Susan was a woman in long term recovery from alcohol addiction. She pursued formal education to be a chemi-cal dependency counselor. She earned her degree and eventually became certified. She worked in the addiction counseling field for 15 years. Susan was a selfless public servant who gave much more to life than she ever took from it. A warm, caring, and humble individual, Susan was an advo-cate for those who struggled and made an impact in the lives of those she served.

To honor her legacy, her family has established the Susan Hughes-Citron memorial scholarship to be awarded annu-ally to one woman who pursues the CARES (certified addiction recovery empowerment specialist) training and certification in the state of Georgia. The CARES certification will allow the lucky recipient the opportu-

nity to find paid employment in the addic-tion recovery work arena supporting those whose shoes she has walked in. A formal ceremony will be held each year to honor Susan’s legacy and to award the memorial scholarship to the identified recipient. The CARES training is conducted by the Geor-gia Council on Substance Abuse.

Felicia Lee is awarded the Susan Highes-Citron Award by Tod Citron, ecexutive director fo the Cobb and Douglas Com-munity Services Boards.
