By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

She stood in her living room, smil-ing proudly, wearing a small blue back pack. Addie was ready to go to a pre-school summer day camp this past June. Two and ¾ years old at the time, she was ready to learn new things and meet new friends. The only item in her backpack: a small white bear wearing a shirt that proclaimed SMYRNA.

Addie turned three early in August and, when the Charlotte school year begins, she will continue to be taught at home by her mom. Considering she could sing “Jesus Love Me” all the way through at 18 months, she is quite bright and is receiving an amaz-ing homeschool education.

Addie and her cousin, Lilly Bell, have a love of reading and learning that is advanced for their young age. They have enjoyed books and stories since birth. This is a gift that I would wish for all of the children in our community: books, a love of learning, an excitement about school.

Lilly Bell, whose mother is a spe-cial education teacher in Virginia, attends a small, private day care center where she enjoys stories, creative play, and interacting with friends. She, like Addie, learns quickly and enjoys her “school.”

The new school year has begun in Cobb County and tens of thousands of children have left summer fun behind them for the excitement of the classroom. Here is what I wish for all of students at every grade level:

• Time to be creative and use their imaginations

• Time to have fun and laugh with friends

• An enjoyment of their course work and a love of learning

• Classes that challenge their minds and that offer help when needed

• Recognition and encouragement of each child’s individual talents

• A safe, non-threatening environment• Nourishing food that is healthy and

tastes good • Good friends who are supportive• Teachers, parents and community

who are supportiveWe have some amazing schools and

amazing teachers in Cobb County. But the education of our children does not begin and end at the classroom door. The education begins in the homes with young children being read to and talked to and listened to. It

continues at home as the child grows older, with discussions, books, a place and time for studying and time for family togetherness.

As the child turns into a teen, it becomes harder to have family time, conversations and family fun. When our children were teens and busy with homework and clubs and sports, we would schedule family dinner at a restaurant after church on Sunday. With no distractions we could catch up on their lives. That’s when we learned if they had a date for prom, were running for a class office, trying out for a play, or other news.

I miss those first days of school, taking a picture before they went off to school. I remember so many milestones: first day of pre-school and then kindergarten, first time riding a bus (middle school), Peter driving himself and Katie to school for the first time, and first local school day when they were both away in college. Now we await future school beginnings when our grown children have their own first school day milestones for their own daughters.

By Paula SandersOne of the challenges that all hospice

caregivers face is to help dispel those myths and reassure patients and families about the realities of effective end-of-life care.

Consider these mistaken notions about hospice care:

Myth: Hospice is a place. Reality: Hospice is not a “place”

– it is a philosophy of care that focuses on enhancing people’s comfort and qual-ity of life during their final months of life. Hospice care can be administered at the patient’s home, hospice inpatient units as well as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living communities or residential care facilities. It includes expert pain man-agement by treating physical symptoms, while providing emotional and spiritual support.

Myth: Hospice means giving up.Reality: Hospice care is about life,

some of the most important moments in life. Hospice aims to make life as comfortable, enjoyable and meaningful as possible. The care is provided by highly skilled, interdis-ciplinary teams of palliative care experts, including physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, bereave-ment specialists and volunteers.

Myth: Hospice care is only for the very old.

Reality: People of all ages face death. Whether a patient is young or old, hospice care is customized to meet the patient’s individual needs, focusing on comfort and dignity for the patient and support for loved ones.

Myth: Hospice care is expensive.Reality: Medicare pays for hospice

services. Many states have established Medicaid coverage for hospice, and almost all private insurers and managed care plans provide coverage for hospice care as well.

For more information about hospice, contact VITAS at (404) 843-6500 or visit www.VITAS.com.

The Men of St. Luke United Method-ist Church are sponsoring a “Dinner and a Movie” on September 13, at 6 p.m. The movie will be “GOD IS NOT DEAD!”

The menu will consist of BBQ chicken, baked beans, cold slaw, Texas toast and sweet tea for only $6 a person. The chil-dren’s meal will consist of: hot dogs, chips and tea for only $2 a person.

Please make plans to attend this momentous event. Bring your neighbors, cousins, friends, co-workers - everyone just come and relax and enjoy.

The church is located at 5115 Brook-wood Drive SW, Mableton.

Starting in September the Food and Clothing Closet at St. Luke United Meth-odist Church will be opened the third Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Donations of food and clothing are being accepted for our food bank and clothing closet. Monetary contributions for the Food Bank and donations of clothing in good repair are needed and welcomed.

Thank you for your generosity in help-ing these ministries of outreach to our reach our community and those who are in need.

Cobb County area high school stu-dents got a taste of college life as well as learning more about Georgia’s natural resources and the opportunities available in the conservation and agricultural fields from experts in each field at the Natural Resources Conservation Workshop held at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia June 8-12. The students were sponsored by the Cobb County Soil and Water Conservation District.

STUDENTS LEARN CONSERVATIONresources.” Over $17,000 in scholarships were awarded during the workshop, now in its 53rd year. The workshop focuses on the value, protection, and conservation of Georgia’s wildlife, forestry, soil and water resources, including conservation in Georgia’s mining industry. The applica-tion and information for the yearly work-shop is available online at abac.edu/nrcw or through county offices of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Georgia Forestry Commission, Department of Natural Resources - Wild-life Division, the Cooperative Extension Service and other participating organiza-tions.

Tenth grade students Konner Longino and Dennis Munn of Pebblebrook High School, home schooled 11th grade student Ty Patterson and 9th grade student Simone Sanders of Osborne High School attended the workshop in middle Georgia while staying at the college. They participated in a wide variety of classes including careers in forestry, soil science, water conservation and the outdoor classes including skeet shooting, how to do a prescribed burn and how to tell the age of a tree.

The forestry segment impressed both Simone and Dennis; as Dennis put it: “I was surprised to find out how much forest rangers are involved in conservation.”

Students Konner Longino and Dennis Munn are also participating in the Earth Team Volunteer Program through NRCS this summer, working in the office and out in the field taking GPS measurements and working alongside the district conserva-tionist for Cobb County.

Metal silver fillings were invented in 1833. While metal silver and mercury fill-ings have saved many teeth, there have been significant advances in dental tech-nologies that make tooth colored fillings a better option to restore teeth. Modern tooth colored fillings are a space age resin called composite that is constantly being improved by manufacturers.

Silver and composite fillings age dif-ferently from one another. Silver fillings, also known as amalgam, tarnish and swell, which can cause a tooth to become stained, or in some cases, crack the tooth. The com-posite fillings will slowly dissolve back over many years and are much less likely to cause cracking or damage to the tooth.

In the modern age of dentistry compos-ites are the current best option for decay, as they are constantly being improved upon, use less toxic materials, and are more aes-thetically pleasing. They do not contain mercury and do not stain the tooth.

Doctor Vivian Hudson has spent over 20 years of her career focusing on tooth colored, modern dental technologies. 3M, ESPE, DenMat, and other dental supply manufacturers have asked Doctor Hudson to review their products for ease of use, efficiency, and reliability. In turn Doctor Hudson only uses the healthiest and high-est quality materials in her office. Her commitment to the best materials, the best techniques, and the best care make her an excellent provider to the Atlanta area.

By Jonathan R. Peak Whether you’ve been waiting for your

upcoming vacation for years or squeezing in a last minute trip before the summer is over, the anticipation of travel can be as exciting as the actual trip. As we’ve seen in world news lately, travel can lead to unpredictability, but fear does not have to hamper your plans. Here are a few travel suggestions to put your mind at ease, sugges-tions that many vacationers over-look:

Prepare your Last Will and Testament.• Prepare your Last Will and Testament. This is perhaps the most impor-tant gift you can give loved ones if accident should strike. This document designates the persons who will manage your estate and the persons to whom you want your property to pass.

• Create a Trust. Trusts are not just for the wealthy! If you want loved ones to receive property without the hassle of probate, whether during your life or after, you can place your assets into a trust. This could be particularly helpful for those planning extended trips overseas for the maintenance and care of your estate or loved ones while you are alive, but away from home.

• Designate a Financial Power of Appointment and Advance Medical Directive. These simple documents select

the persons – be it family, friend, attor-ney, financial planner, etc. – you trust to manage your finances or make health care

decisions for you if you are inca-pacitated through illness, accident, age, etc. Should something happen while you are away, your agents will be able to make decisions on your behalf.

• Traveling abroad with chil-dren? Have an Authorization for International Travel, which will allow you to designate another adult, such as family, friends, or a nanny, to travel alone with your children.

Even if you and your spouse are traveling together with your own children, this is an important document to have in case some-thing happens and only one of you can to travel with the children.

These suggestions are meant to be helpful tips to help you leave your wor-ries behind on your next vacation. By talk-ing with a trusted estate planning attorney before you leave, you can travel with peace of mind and have more freedom to truly enjoy life.

Join in for a day of camaraderie and tennis as The Greater South Cobb Kiwanis Club will host a Round Robin Tennis Tour-nament to help raise funds for the local club and Project Eliminate.

Project Eliminate is a Kiwanis ini-tiative to eliminate maternal and neona-tal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciat-ing – tiny newborns suffer repeated, pain-ful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million — and the dedicated work and contributions of every member of the Kiwanis family.

In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The

end of this one disease means the begin-ning of better health for so many families.

Player and guests alike are invited to participate in a variety of fun filled activi-ties form 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 23. A tennis round robin is a scheduling format that guarantees players the opportunity to play more than one match when they enter an event.

GSC Kiwanis tournament tickets are on sale for a price of $25 per person. For more information on the event, email Her-schel E. Chalk III at [email protected] or Reverend Coakley Pendergrass at [email protected] .

This event is for tennis players of all levels and open to anyone in the Atlanta area, so please feel free to pass this invite along.

This is the 227th anniversary com-memorating the signing of the U.S. Consti-tution on September 17, 1787 by 39 brave men at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For the last four years the Constitution Day Committee has been able to deliver Constitutions (with flashcards and teacher lesson plans) to the 5th graders of the Cobb County and City of Marietta Schools who asked to participate. This year we are very excited to announce that we are taking the project to schools across Georgia and need your help.

FIRST DAY AT RUSSELL ELEMENTARYRussell Elementary School Roadrunners were all smiles as they returned to school Aug. 4. Teachers and staff donned Waffle House, Krispy Kreme and Chick-Fil-A hats as they ushered in the school theme, “Here to Serve.” Dr. Grant Rivera and John Adams, from the county office, along with State Rep. David Wilkerson greeted students as they entered the building. Even the Chick-Fil-a cow was serving up high fives. Teachers “Wowed” the students as they arrived to their classrooms. Fourth grade teachers served each student with a bottle of water and their theme, “Quench your thirst with knowledge.” Third graders were greeted with, “Third grade is a piece of cake: If you work hard” and were served cake to munch on during their morning meeting. “The students were shown how the Russell Roadrunner teachers and staff are, ‘Here to Serve’ our students and parents this school year,” said Princi-pal Peter Manson.

Contact Barbara Hickey at (404-276-0808) or [email protected] if you wish to participate by a tax-deductible donation (payable to Liberty Day, a 501 c3) or are interested in delivering Constitu-tions to the schools.
