RESOLUTIONS TO KEEP IN JANUARY 2013

By Cathy Shattles LipsettEditor/Publisher

There is something sad about saying goodbye to a year. But there is also some-thing exciting about saying hello to a new year, one that is wide open to new adven-tures.

At midnight, Allan and I had our quiet goodbye to 2012 and a quick toast to 2013. The New Year began as usual, at home, watching the Times Square celebration on television.

The year 2012 was pretty much a good year, with a few visits with our precious granddaughters and our children. Our health was pretty good; our business running well; a busy year but a fun one as well. We had no extravagant holidays, but did take an unusual trip to visit our D.C. family in Sep-tember for granddaughter Lilly Bell’s first birthday. We drove to Charlotte for time with granddaughter Addie; and then took the train to D.C. We didn’t want to tackle the long drive so it was a way to spend time with both families without the fatigue of driving the entire way.

A great resolution toward giving your pet a longer, healthier life is have your pet’s teeth cleaned regularly. Because periodon-tal disease is the most common disease for our beloved cats and dogs, February has been declared Pet Dental Health Month in order to increase awareness of how impor-tant dental health is for our pets.

Periodontal disease is inflammation and infection of the gums and it can be very painful! Periodontal ligaments and even the jawbone surrounding a tooth can be involved. The amount of plaque and tartar covering the base of the tooth initi-ates the disease process because as tartar accumulates, it pushes the gums away from the tooth and interrupts the tooth’s healthy blood supply. Tartar consists of layers of bacteria that are capable of spreading to other organs of your pet’s body. The heart, kidneys, and liver can all become infected because of dental disease. The heart is the vital organ most commonly infected by oral bacteria that attach to heart valves causing heart disease and heart murmurs.

Oral examination is an essential part of a thorough physical exam for your pet. Many owners who are unaware of their pet’s periodontal disease ask a veterinarian to explain their pet’s foul breath, bleed-ing gums or difficulty chewing food. If treated early periodontal disease can be almost completely reversible. Oral infec-tions are most commonly seen in small and toy breeds due to their genetically weaker enamel. Thus small and toy breeds require more dental attention to live their full life-span with health and vigor.

The best way to avoid the need for pro-fessional cleaning or major dental surgery is through routine home dental care and bi-annual physical and oral exams. Pre-vention of periodontal disease is easy and should be part of every pet’s weekly rou-tine. Frequent tooth brushing and oral care, preferably daily, can keep tartar accumula-tion to a minimum. Enzymatic toothpastes, oral rinses, diets, and treats are available at our office to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.

But when dental cleaning is indicated, it is important to check your pet’s blood

work to determine if other health issues exist. Antibiotics are always indicated, sometimes in advance of a dental cleaning as well as afterward, to decrease the spread of bacteria. Once tartar accumulates, the only way to remove it effectively is through manual and ultrasonic professional dental cleaning, performing curretage above and below the gum line. Severely infected, damaged teeth may require extraction.

Please call one of our clinics to sched-ule your pet’s dental exam and discounted dental cleaning during the month of Feb-ruary 2013 because its Pet Dental Health Month! We care, and we know you do too.

Now, as we head into 2013, we have a blank slate to be filled in, one day at a time. My resolutions this year are few; but they are ones that I am very serious about fulfill-ing. My first resolution is to cut the clutter. I spent too much time in 2012 looking for lost items. I have too much clutter in my office and my house and I really, really don’t like clutter. I had planned to tackle it beginning with the first day of the year, but a winter flu-like bug sapped my energy for these extra tasks. Despite the delay in beginning, I know that this is a reasonable resolution, and doesn’t have to be completed on the first day of the year. Hopefully, I will spend this year enjoying time in better ways than looking for lost, misplaced, misfiled items.

My other resolution is to exercise more and eat healthier. This too should be easy to keep, but I know it will be more difficult to fulfill. For readers who share this resolution and want some outside help, we have adver-tisers who are experts in these fields and available to help with fitness and nutrition.

My favorite exercise is walking and we Continued on Page 6

By Robert MeyringWhen people write a will, they choose

the most trusted and reliable person they know to help carry out their will-written wishes. That person is known as the execu-tor. That is the person, for example, who actually transfers the gift of money to the grandchild or deeds the house to the children according to what the will says.

Most times an executor is a spouse; and spouses often name each other as their first choice, but if one spouse passes away, then the sur-viving spouse will need to have named a second person to be the executor instead. Some parents choose two children as co-executors as a way to force the children to get along with each other. Often that is a very bad idea because the fighting chil-dren will still fight over the handling of the decedent’s estate and everything the co-executors do would require both co-exec-utor’s signature - even if both children live in different places. So the extra effort and fighting between co-executors often results in wasted money and a diminished estate for the surviving family.

Many times a will-named executor will not know that they are executor until after the relative or friend has died, as the contents of the will are often kept private until the time that the executor files the will for probate in the probate court. What is needed to file the will for probate is dif-ficult to find out and the executor often

YOU’RE AN EXECUTOR, NOW WHAT?

Robert Meyring

needs to visit the probate court many times to get the probate papers correct. Beyond the probate filing, if deed transfers are needed, most executors do not know how to write or transfer deeds, don’t know how to calculate the liabilities in the estate han-dling, and do not know how to deal with aggressive creditors to the estate.

To further complicate the estate, people often put together wills that have problems that show up only after the will is probated. Problems originate from 1) unin-formed will drafting by “helpful” lawyer friends or lawyer family members that do not practice in trusts and estates, 2) cost cutting in the making of a will - because many people seem to believe that a cheap will is a good will, 3) or stem from the fact that most people do not know how to draft a good will.

A named executor must bear the burden of the estate plan produced by the will-drafter if they accept the position as executor. Can the executor be paid? How does the named executor know if they are handling a difficult estate? How long will it take? What if the people who receive gifts and property from the will do not agree with what the will says? What if those same people hate each other? What if the will is just a bad will that won’t work? How is that resolved? What if the will tries to give away property or family real estate that is not owned by the decedent?

To find these answers and peace of mind, hire a probate-experienced trusts and estates attorney. Or simply bear the burden of being the executor without help and pray everything goes well.

live in a neighborhood that is very walker friendly. Additionally, there are challenging outdoor spaces such as the Silver Comet Trail and Kennesaw Mountain. In addition, we have a small fitness center in our office building. I have no excuse not to be up and moving. When it’s too cold or too hot to walk outside, there is always Cumberland Mall or Costco with lots of space to walk in a climate controlled environment.

Eating healthier includes passing by the huge bags of chocolates and desserts at Costco, opting for non-sugar choices. I do have challenges to eating healthy, how-ever. I have a lot of food allergies, including but not limited to soy and nuts. The aller-gies tend to limit my healthy food choices. If only the allergies included chocolate, I would be better off.

Becoming healthier is about making choices. My resolution for 2013 is to make better choices: more movement; fewer sweets; better organization; less clutter. I don’t like to fail at anything. By making the resolutions public, hopefully, I will have the extra incentive to succeed. I hope all of our Bright Side readers enjoy a successful, happy, prosperous 2013.
