PHOTO: LUALAND PHOTOGRAPHY Simply the best Time-management system damaged >> ‘There have been unfortunate reports of some scanners being vandalised’ GINISILE NDOVELA A CASE of damage to proper- ty and vandalism has been opened by the Hibiscus Coast Municipality after its elec- tronic time management system scanners were damaged recently, crippling the implementation of the system. Municipal spokesperson Simon Soboyisa said the munici- pality stopped using attendance registers and started using the electronic time management sys- tem as planned. "I can indicate though that there have been unfortunate and disappointing reports of some scanners being vandalised togeth- er with security cameras close to the scanners. “This can be associated with those who are against the system. The municipality has opened a criminal case of damage to proper- ty with the SAPS and we are also conducting our own internal in- vestigations which are at an ad- vanced stage. We are determined to act very harshly against those who are responsible for this," said Soboyisa. Last week the municipality told the media that it was all systems go for the implementation of Elec- tronic Time Management System (ETMS) on 1 November. Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said: "This will be implemented despite the visible resistance on the side of organised labour as we are confi- dent that all the necessary proce- dures were followed. “This ETMS, which is meant to improve internal control and en- sure employees’ productivity, was approved for implementation more than three years ago, and it has been costing the municipality more than R250 000 per annum, although it has not been used due to Samwu's resistance towards its implementation," she said. Municipal manager Max Mbili said management believed that all necessary processes were carried out to ensure the effective imple- mentation and it was at this stage of actual implementation that the labour unions challenged the legit- imacy of the ETMS, citing a lack of consultation. "The union approached the Labour Court earlier this year, which granted an order on a settle- ment agreement effectively direct- ing the parties to consult. Such consultation has since taken place, and it is the intention of manage- ment for the ETMS to resume operation," said Mbili. PAGE 29 Bigger and better Lake Eland Mile

Paytopark beginsGINISILE [email protected]

THE Hibiscus Coast Municipal spokesperson SimonSoboyisa confirmed this week that the civil worksand employment of staff for the new paytoparksystem in the Port Shepstone CBD has begun.

"It is planned that the first machines and parkingmeters will be installed this weekend," said Soboyisa.

Last week the municipality said that it was planning to resume the new parking system in the CBDon 1 November and said that iTraMAS Corporationhad started installing the parking meters, however, due to recent heavy rains, the process was delayed.

The municipality confirmed that iTraMAS Corporation Africa was appointed as the service providerin line with the Supply Chain Management Policy.

“In addition, at the time of appointment ofiTraMAS, no objections were received. The other areaof concern was whether the management had authority to advertise for a service provider to managethe public parking system within the Hibiscus coast.

“This has been clarified as there are resolutions,to this effect,” said Soboyisa.” After iTraMAS Corporation Africa was appointed it was then invited todo a presentation in a council meeting in July to explain how the process of the public parking management system will unfold. During the presentation period councillors from different political parties wereafforded an opportunity to make input and submissions regarding the implementation of the system,"said Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu during a recent mediabriefing.

Mqwebu added that public consultation meetings then followed between 30 September and 4 October at Hibberdene, Port Shepstone, Uvongo, Margate and Port Edward to ensure that the system iscommunicated thoroughly to the public and also allow the public to make input and submission on implementing the system.

THE Ugu District Municipality spokesperson Sipho Khuzwayo confirmed this weekthat the municipality is implementing anew meterreading system in order to getaccurate and correct water readings.

"The cry for accurate, convenient and

leaksmart meters has come alive as theUgu District Municipality pilots the newSmart Meter Project currently being rununder Ward 26 in Gamalakhe.

“The municipality has installed 693units in Gamalakhe with a lifespan of 15years and has spent R2 million on this project," said Khuzwayo.

The smart meters are a new approachto dealing with water challenge billing themunicipality encounters.

"The current meters have been a nightmare for consumers and employees because of their inaccurate readings leadingto incorrect billing, the inability to detectleaks, meters being tampered with and being the source of illegal connections," saidKhuzwayo.

Khuzwayo pointed out that the smartmeters are guaranteed to automaticallycapture accurate figures with no estimations and can detect a leak in the system.

They can also detect illegal connectionsand faults.

Municipal employees, including meterreaders, plumbers and billing section account personnel, were trained in a threeday theoretical training workshop onmaintaining, billing and the operation ofthe smart meters to ensure successful implementation of the project.

Practical field training is ongoing to ensure that field staff familiarise themselves

with the smart meters."It is pivotal that our officials are thor

oughly trained in the operation of thesenew meters to ensure customer satisfaction. Well capacitated employees lead tosatisfied customers, which is what the municipality strives for in its service deliveryendeavours.

“The first billing of the smart meters isintended to be done at the end of themonth," said Khuzwayo.

“It was a great evening and while I didn’t

win the big one, I was proud to representKZN, Media24 and the ‘Fever.’ I alwaysstrive to put 100% into every article I writeand that I’m regarded among the best inthe country means a lot to me. South Coast ‘Fever’ editor Elaine Kingsaid Van Jaarsveld’s placing was especially

noteworthy given that he was up againstjournalists from national publications.

Storm damageto cost millions>> Hibiscus Coast Municipality area has been badly affected by the heavy rains and wind

CANDYCE [email protected]

IT will cost the Hibiscus CoastMunicipality more thanR46 million to repair infrastruc-

ture damaged by the recent heavyrains which plummeted down onthe South Coast. HCM spokesper-son Simon Soboyisa said thisamount could very well go up as anassessment was still in progress.

“TheHibiscus CoastMunicipali-ty area has been badly affected bythe heavy rains and wind as therewereproblemsof floodinginalmostall wards,” he said.

“The downpours caused river

levels to rise and flood, resulting indamage toproperty and infrastruc-ture in close proximity to water-ways. Low-lying flood plain areasand areas adjacent to river banksare also affected,” he added.

One fatality was reported atMbotsha,Boboyiareawherean18-year-oldwaswashed away. The ar-eas most affected are Louisiana,Sunwhich, Melville, Marburg andBoboyi.

“A full report will only be avail-able once a full assessment is com-pleted. The process of cleaning thebeaches is still going on, even nowbecause the priority was given toroads leading toschoolsdue tomat-

ric examinationsand roads leadingto clinics and hospitals,” he said.

Soboyisa added that the pro-cess of assessment is done to de-termine to what extent the stormcan be declared a local disaster.

The report is then submitted tothe District Disaster ManagementCentre (DDMC). The DDMC willthen forward the information to itsprovincial department and fur-ther assessment is done to deter-mine if this can be categorised asa disaster.

“Once a disaster has been de-clared, the processes for perma-nent interventions are followed. This can be seen as a very long pro-

cess, however having it being effi-ciently handled it does not takelong,” he said.

Headded that in this case theHi-biscus Coast Municipality and theDDMC provided temporal relief topeople affected by the storm, espe-cially those in Louisiana.

“Theywere housed atMayibuyeCentre, providedwith blankets andmattresses, and inaddition, mobiletoilets were hired,” said Soboyisa.

The preliminary report and arecommendation for declaring Hi-biscus Coast Municipality a localstate of disaster as per the DisasterManagementAct57of2002wasta-bled on Tuesday.

Dear Fever,WHAT good news the agreement be

tween CemAir and HCM is — and just before the festive season!

South Coasters, and those living a little further in Harding and Kokstad, havewaited a long time for an airline to returnto our area.

Travelling to King Shaka is a pain in the

neck for those of us who fly frequently, sowe welcome CemAir and ask all of thosewho fly on the South Coast to please support this new venture.

The more of us that support it, thegreater the chances of it lasting, and notonly that, the more it is supported, themore frequent the flights CemAir will beable to provide.

Come on, let’s look at the prices theyare going to charge — fares starting atR1 249 up to R1 899 (one way), which isnot bad at when you compare what itcosts to fly to Johannesburg from KingShaka.

Let’s factor in the cost of petrol to KingShaka (private vehicle or bus), then thecost of the flight, and the same on the way

back, and money has already been saved. However, more than this is the sheer

inconvenience of driving all that way, andthe money lost in time.

This is really very exciting so come on,let’s all fly with CemAir and make it workfor the South Coast.

Mark WilsonUmtentweni

CemAir — let’s all make it work for the South Coast

Dear Fever,ItwaswitheagernessthatIpicked

uplastweek’scopyoftheSouthCoastFever to read a report on an impor-tant happening in HCM. It was anevent thatwasgivenreasonablecov-erageinbothnationalandprovincialnewspapers.

Requiringmonths of preparationand involving the participation ofthousands of residents it took placeon 23 October. Tomy dismay I failed

to tag its coverage in this edition. Ifit was indeed given publicity, itmustbe admitted that skillful journalismwas employed to conceal its propa-gation.

In this instance specific referenceismadetoyourlackofcoverageofthebi-election held inWard 29 in HCM.Its failure to appear in your valuedweekly tabloid does begmany ques-tions:

>> Is a report on a by election not

newsworthy?>> Is a victory for the ANC a for-

gone conclusion and hence triflingnews?

>> Is a 77.5% victory in a tradi-tionally opposition stronghold notworthy of publicity?

>> Is such news suppresed be-causes it dispels the myth of a col-lapsing ANC?

>> Is thereabelief that suchnewspromotes the political interest of the

ANC and reinforces its establishedand growing image?

>>Honestly, wouldyouhavedonethe same if another party won?

There is a perception that we areengaged in an unfair battle with themedia.

Atonishingly and without theneed for further detail, evidence likethis reinforce such conjecture.

Ronnie NairSpeaker HCM

Is election report not newsworthy?Dear Fever,

PLEASE be warned. An elderly friend, who received unrealistic accounts from Eskom, voiced many complaints. She indicated that her meter readings differed drastically from the readings taken by meterreaders. So she was surprised and delighted to receive a phone call on Saturdayevening from Eskom asking her to provideinformation of her ID and address.

Then she verified that she lives alone, this to substantiate the fact that one person alone could not use the high amountof electricity reflected on her statements.

Later, experiencing unease, when shetelephoned Eskom, the company deniedthat an employee had contacted her. Is thisa method to establish the number of people on a property to effect a housebreak? We are all warned not to provide information and that officials must provide theirwork identification card.

The thing is, how can one ensure thatthese documents are not fraudulent.

IT is good news that HCM won a prize forbeing the best performing local mediumand large municipality in KZN.

This was based on various criteria including municipal transformation, localeconomic development, municipal financial viability and management and goodgovernance and public participation.

Hats off to our relatively new HCM municipal manager Max Mbili who has displayed all these characteristics since hetook over.

To those who are trying to thwart HCM’sattempts to get workers to clock in regularly (see page 1), as many companies do,hopefully justice will prevail and the culprits will be caught and severely dealt with.

Well done HCM

What happenedto no bangsAGREEMENT?

Dear Fever,THEreasonyougave for refusing topublish

pertinent and informative anti-fireworks let-ters in the issuedirectlyprecedingDiwali isnotconvincing. This is a matter of wide concernand is in the public domain. It is not under thejurisdictionoftheUmtentweniRatepayers’Fo-rum or the Hindu Cultural Federation.

Obviously no advertisingrevenue accrues from the cause of animalwel-fare,butsurelythis isnoexcuseforacommuni-ty newspaper to produce a lopsided perspec-tive that doesn’t even touch on this issue ofwidespread suffering and disruption.

My Hindu neighbours unlawfully ignitedloud crackers on Sunday afternoon and big-bang rockets throughout the night. As I write,onMondayafternoon,theyarelettingoffcrack-ers. Last night hell was visited uponmy houseby these neighbours. Our pets were terrified.Wildlifedisappeared.Thesilence thismorningwas deathly — not one single bird sang. What

AmidtheDiwalipropagandainyourpast is-suewas the following statement: “Many oppo-sitions assail the Indian community, from thebanonfireworkstothesweepofotherreligionswhich are intended to outshine the festival oflights and relegate its importance.”

This is arrant, if not paranoid, nonsense.Firstly, it is obviously not true that there is

a ban on fireworks.Secondly, not all Indians are Hindu, so

please do not try to introduce racism where itis not the issue.

Thirdly, not all Hindus behave in the cruelandlawlessmannerexperiencedbythoseofusunfortunate enough to have wicked neigh-bours,sopleasedonotlabelmycomplaintanti-Hindu. I am complaining about cruel and anti-social behaviour.

Since the police and protection services donot enforce the law in this country, surely theHindu Cultural Federation should be makingan effort to reign in on their loose canons whoare certainly not showing their religion in agood light.

Dear Doctor Nash, This is a family problem. Ihave four married daughters and seven grandchildren. The one granddaughter was born five weeksprematurely and now seems a little slow in her development.Shewasslowinwalkingandintalking, just like her mother. The child responds only to herparents and no one else. If separated from hermother she cries, so I do not look forward to looking after her. Her father and mother work and thechild is too often made my responsibility. I also payfor medical expenses as the father has four children from his previous marriage and they use upall the medical aid that he has.

She is at a crèche thank heavens, but again,I often have to help out with money. I do not knowhow to handle the fact that it is my family, butI am going into serious financial risk. I am a widowwith limited finances. What can I do? Please help

me with some of your excellent advice. Thank you.Mrs D.E.

Dear Mrs. D.E. You really are in a very emotional situation, but that only makes the decisionharder doesn’t it. It seems to me that your daughter was also a little slow when she made the decision to marry a divorced man with four responsibilities and, it seems, no real clue as to how he is goingto finance those responsibilities. I am not a lawyerso I hesitate to advise your daughter, but for youI suggest that your first responsibility is to yourself. It does not seem as if there is another piggy bankin the family, so you are on your own. Tell daughterand soninlaw that they must make plans. Youshould really control your life, not them. You decide what you can give in time, and possibly money, and that is the end of it. Your life.Your decision, not theirs.

Daughter expects a lot from me

DR NASH [email protected]

Dear Doctor Nash, I was on drugs about threeyears ago and was in a special clinic up north. I hadtroubles with my husband and mother who toldme that I was hiding behind the illness. I have myown business here on the South Coast, and I dohave a problem handling the financial and workstress. We have always had marriage problemsand I am sick of being nice to him. He has no ambition, no drive, and what is worse is that I have ahigh sex drive and he will not do it, and so thathas led to me having several affairs. At the moment I have no control over my life. Everybody istelling me what to do, mother, husband, inlaws.I just want fun in my life and no responsibility. Ijust want out of this marriage. I have all these menwilling to spoil me, even to help with money, butI do not want to be a used wornout woman. I amscared of divorce, but need the freedom, but when

the moment comes I am scared. What do I do?Please help this Scared Mouse.

Dear Scared Mouse, although that is not theimage I get of you from your description. You arein a hole, but it is a hole of your own making, andyou are correct in realising that the solution lieswith you. You do have to take the decision to sortyourself out before you can deal with your husband problems, some of which may well be because of you! I strongly suggest that your first stepis to find a good psychologist whom you think youcan work with and decide on a definite programthat will help you to control your behaviour andyour stress levels which are obviously very high.Get your life under control before you make anyother decisions. It will take a little time, but it willbe well worth it.

Sterkte.

THE Minister of Women, Children and People withDisabilities Lulu Xingwana celebrated Children’s Daywith children from eight provinces at the Ugu Sportsand Leisure Centre on Saturday. Only the WesternCape did not attend the celebration.

This comes after South Africa declared the firstSaturday of November National Children’s Day. Thisyear the day took place under the theme “Sireletsabana — creating a caring nation”.

Xingwana stated that South Africa has ratifiedthe United Nations Convention on the Rights of theChild and many of these rights are enshrined in theConstitution of South Africa.“The Children’s Act of 2005 amplifies the rights of thechildren. The aim of the celebration is to highlight

progress made towards the realisation and promotion of children’s rights. It will also popularise and promote the constitutional mandate to ensure thatSouth African society upholds the rights of children. This year’s celebration takes place against a worryingtrend of an increase in violence against children, childabuse, murders and rapes,” said Xingwana.

In marking National Children’s Day South Africansare urged to protect children. “We also call on communities to continue to work with law enforcementagencies in fighting crime in communities,” she said.

Xingwana visited a childled project and hostedan interactive dialogue on violence against childrento hear children’s views, expectations and how theysee their future in South Africa.

She called on magistrates and judges to imposestrict sentences for child abusers and said that rapistsand murderers must be given life sentences.

STUFFED BUTTERNUTCHOP a butternut in half, scoop out the

seeds and stuff the cavity with ingredients ofyour choice. It works nicely tomix up some ofthepulp (without theseeds)withchoppedbut-ton mushrooms, onion, some grated cheese, chutney and a bit of tomato paste. Wrap it upin foil andplace in thecoalsuntil soft (howsoftdepends on the vegetarian involved).BRAAIED POTATO OR SWEET POTATO

This little meal is even easier to concoctthan the others. Simply wrap the potatoes infoil and place in the coals. As they are nearingreadiness, heatupacanofsweetcornorbakedbeans and grate some cheese. When they’reready, remove them from the coals, cut inquarters but make sure you don’t cut all theway through. Open the potato out a little andcover in sweet corn/baked beans and gratecheeseoverthetop.Alternatively, ifyourvege-tarian is more of a pescatarian, mix up sometuna and a little mayo with some choppedchives and put that into the potato. Cottagecheese works nicely too.STUFFED PEPPERS

CANDICE STEYN

AN abundance of colour greets you as youwalk into the large garden of Eden that isSouthport Garden Centre. Run by threegenerations of women, one can easily notice a woman’s touch.

Kerry Massey, wellknown South Coastlandscaper, runs the centre with her mother Liz Foster and her grandmother CeciliaBonandrini. Each adds her personal touchto the centre by creating features, paintings and pottery as well as numerous displays of plants and flowers.

Massey is a landscaper by trade and isalways keen to offer tips and suggestionsto those who seek advice on how to builda beautiful garden.

Garden Centre artist Michelle Wallacespends her days creating exquisite paint

work on the pots, wildlife statues and colourful garden and home accessories.

Also part of the friendly staff are JennyClegg, an orchid expert and Ted Webber —all 81 years of him — who has been growingplants with the centre for 12 years.

Not only selling a vast range of plants, flowers and herbs, the centre sells waterfeatures, wall features, garden gnomes, fairies and garden signs, in addition fertilisers, bug sprays and plant food is also available. “Plants are like humans — they needfood, water, medicine when they get sickand they need a haircut. Feed your plants, water them, treat them and deadheadany dead leaves or flowers,” says Massey.

The centre is open every day alongBendigo Road in Southport. The centre’scolourful displays can clearly be seen fromthe main road.

PARSLEY — probably the most knownand most widely used herb, originatesfrom the Mediterranean region. It has

been cultivated for over 2000 years, beingused medicinally prior to being consumed asa food. The Romans generally did not eatparsley, but wore it as garlands on theirheads during feasts to ward off intoxication.AtRomanweddings, wreathsofparsleyweregiven to protect against evil spirits.

Full of vitamin K, C and A, folate and iron, parsley is definitively not only to be used asa table garnish. Its volatile oils qualify it asa “chemo protective” food. It has shown toinhibit tumour formation, particularly in the

lungs.Parsley increases the antioxidant capaci

ty of the blood, has anti inflammatory, antiinfective components, and boosts the immune system.

The two most popular types of parsleyare curly and Italian flat parsley, latter beingmore fragrant and less bitter.

Basil — originating from India and tropical parts of Asia, is also a good source of vitamins, magnesium and calcium, and containsnutrients essential for cardio vascularhealth.

In India basil was cherished as an icon ofhospitality, while in Italy it was a symbol of

love.It has detoxifying qualities, helps for mi

graines, coughs, ulcers, tonsillitis, mouth infections, hypertension, palpitations and indigestion.

Basil leaves can be rubbed onto kitchencounter tops to keep flies away and freshenthe air. It can be used as a spray againstaphids, scale, fungus and white fly. Crush abasil leaf and apply to infected bites andstings.

The most widely used is sweet basil, which has a bright and pungent taste.

Bay leaf originates from the Mediterranean region and Southern Europe. It grows to

a 1012m tall tree. Bay leaf was believed toprotect against disease, witchcraft, and thesources of nature; no man will be struck bylightning or be hurt by the devil if he has abay tree near him.

Bat leaf stimulates digestion, enhancesenergy levels and relieves rheumatic achesand pains. — Supplied.

Healing power of herbs>> Herbs, indispensable in the culinary world, have great healing powers too

• To remove the salt deposits that formon clay pots, combine equal parts whitevinegar, rubbing alcohol and water in aspray bottle. Apply the mixture to thepot and scrub with a brush. Let the potdry before you plant anything in it.

• To prevent accumulating dirt un

deryourfingernailswhenworkinginthegarden, draw your nails across a bar ofsoap and you’ll seal the undersides ofthem so dirt can’t collect beneaththem.

• To prevent the line on your stringtrimmer from jamming or breaking,

• If you’ve got aphids get some widesticky tape, wrap around your hand, sticky side out, and pat the leaves ofplants infested with aphids.

• The next time you boil or steamvegetables, don’t pour the water downthe drain, use it to water potted patioplants — you’ll be amazed at how theplants respond.

• Use leftover tea and coffeegroundstoacidifythesoilofacidlovingplants, such as azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias, gardenias and evenblueberries. A sprinkling of about onecentimetre applied once a month willkeepthepHofthesoilontheacidicside.

• Use chamomile tea to control fungus — which often attacks seedlings

suddenly — by adding a drop of tea tothe soil around the base of seedlingsonce a week.

• If you need an instant table for atea service, look no further than yourcollection of clay pots and saucers. Justflip a goodsized pot over, and top it offwith a large saucer. And when you’vehad your share of tea, fill the saucerwith water, and your “table” becomesa birdbath.

• The quickest way to dry herbs is tolay a sheet of newspaper on the seatof your car, arrange the herbs in a singlelayer, then roll up the windows andclose the doors. Your herbs will bequickly dried to perfection, and what’smore, your car will smell great.

ECO Furniture was the winner in the Fastest Growing Incubatee category at the DTIAwards 2013, founded by a South Coast local Peter Haralambous

The Fever features writer spoke to Haralambous and asked him about the company.

>> What prompted the idea for EcoFurniture?

It was Tameron, my wife and businesspartner, who came up with the idea aftershe asked me to make a baby changingtable from discarded wood. It turned outokay, so I made a few more. One thing ledto another and we hired someone to makethe tables in our garage.

>> What is Eco Furniture?Furniture made from wood that is sus

tainable in nature. Either secondhand orreclaimed from houses and buildings or alien or invasive species of timber such assaligna or blackwood, sustainably forrested pine timber all forest stewardship council approved.

>> How long has the business beenrunning?

About three and a half years since thatfirst table.

>> Were you born on the coast? No, I was born in London but lived in

Margate for 20 years>> What school did you attend? In junior school I went to Margate Pri

mary and in high school I went to Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg, then Iwent to the University of Cape Town.

>> Do you have carpentry qualifications?

No, but I have learnt a lot from the business incubation centre that we are basedat in Cape Town.

Over two years I have learnt the basicsand more and also been able to train about12 staff in various areas of woodworkingand furniture making.

>> Where do you see the business going in five years?

Hopefully we can sustain the growththat we have already experienced and alsogrow more to be able to employ and empower more people. We would like to export in the next two to three years.

THE South Coast Bass Association (SCBA) will hostthe second annual Port Edward Bass Classic on private farm dams this weekend.

Last year’s inaugural classic was met with suchgreat enthusiasm that the SCBA have decided tocontinue with the initiative in an effort to boost bassfishing on the South Coast. SCBA chairman ManusErasmus said: “It was a great concern last year thatthe sport of bass fishing was in decline so we at SCBAdecided to host the PE Bass Classic and it turned outbeing a popular attraction. We are trying to involvefamilies but at the same time make anglers awareof fishing with artificial lure and of course, catch andrelease as preservation of bass.”

Erasmus added the fact that anglers are spoiltfor choice with numerous private dams is one of themajor draw cards of the competition. “The privatefarm dams are a big attraction for anglers becauseof these dams not being fished so often. They therefore make for exciting fishing.”

This year’s winning prize is a Pisces Predator kickboat. Other great prizes that will be up for grabs inthe men’s, women’s and junior categories includeholidays, fishing rods and reels and watches. Therewill also be a R500 cash pay out to the lucky anglerwho catches a fish that was tagged in a recent SCBAfishoff during the twoday classic as well as lots oflucky draws and raffles to be won.

The captain’s briefing will be held at the Port Edward Marlin SkiBoat Club on Friday at 6pm. Fishing on artificial lures only will start on Saturday at5am until 5pm and from 5am to 12pm on Sunday, with weigh masters set to weigh fish at each damto ensure that bass are returned live.

Entry fee is R80 for seniors and R60 juniors andno team entries will be accepted. To enter, contactErasmus on 0834120960, 0728785721 or [email protected]

Sole played little golf leading up tothe tournament as he recovered froma slipped disk in his back but lookedlike he hadn’t skipped a beat as he hitthe ground running at Selborne.

He cardeda first-round71and sec-ond-round 69 to add a second South-ern KwaZulu-Natal Open title to hisrésumé on 140, five ahead of hisformer provincial teammate BryceBibby,GregMcKayandRubenCoetzer.

“It seems the older I get, the luckierI become,” the veteran told the Fever.“Iwent inwithnota lot of expectationsand played quite nicely. When you’rerelaxed, things seem to fall into place.I had a good attitude all day and itworked out quite nicely.”

Sole creditedhisputting - andmak-ing use of a long putter - as the key tohis victory. “Because ofmy back beingsore, I was experimenting with differ-ent putters. I was putting with a longputter, butwith itbeingbannedfor twoyears Iwasn’t tookeen togo thatdirec-tion. I tried it on the putting green justbefore the tournament and went backtooldhabits,soIwentwithitandputt-ed really well.”
