LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,The end of 2015 brings an opportunity to recognize another list of milestones at the organization:

• 835 boys and girls participated in at least one of our programs during the 2014-2015 year, the most to date.

• 21 SBU Academy student-athletes graduated high school, including four graduates who had been with SBU for more than 5 years.

• 100% of our graduates enrolled in college or as a boarding school post-graduate.

• 100 young men and women now make up our alumni list and attend schools including Sarah Lawrence College, Franklin and Marshall College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, St. Lawrence University, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

• 4 SBU Academy youth began attending prestigious boarding schools on scholarship in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.

• The SBU 98 Under-16 boys team won the East New York Challenge Cup becoming the first South Bronx United team to win a state competition.

• The SBU Rising Stars, our high school girls, made the program’s first ever trip to the nation’s capital and northern Virginia where they stayed for four days.

• We provided immigration casework to 33 individuals and have now helped 10 immigrant youth gain permanent legal residency.

• Our partnership with the Terra Firma program for unaccompanied immigrant youth led to the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 10 participants to meet Pope Francis and present him with a soccer ball.

After seven years, we felt these accomplishments, our growth, and our mission should be better reflected in South Bronx United’s brand identity. SBU is much larger than soccer, offering academic, leadership, and life skills for its international community of student-athletes. With the help of our friends at M Style Marketing, SBU has designed a new logo to embody this identity. The globe with the enclosed Bronx outline represents our diverse community of youth and families who have emigrated to the borough from around the world. SBU uses soccer, the world’s game, to enrich the lives of its participants and promote social change in the South Bronx. The logo’s circular shape and language reflect the goals of the organization, continually growing and progressing. We hope that our youth and supporters will wear this logo emblem with pride.

In addition to creating this design, SBU spent much of the past year strengthening our programs and services. We hired a full-time Legal Services Coordinator to make inroads with our immigrant supports, a crucial component for an organization that serves youth who are overwhelmingly from immigrant families. We invested in youth mentoring by bringing a Team Mentor on staff for every SBU Academy team. The mentors monitored and supported each participant in the classroom and on the field and advocated for them outside of the program. We began offering more advanced soccer training and competition for children ages 9 through 11. We leveraged connections to bring more resources to families through the Health and Wellness Day, Literacy Day, and other activities. We launched new programming as well, reaching more youth through SBU City in the Community (CITC). Funded through New York City FC and the City Football Foundation’s Cityzen’s Giving initiative, CITC enabled SBU to deliver after school soccer and health education at two partner elementary schools in Melrose and Highbridge. A significant aspect of the program has been the involvement of SBU Academy young leaders and alumni in the planning process and as coordinators, coaches, and referees, both paid and volunteer. We are fortunate to have incredible supporters who have helped us expand to 11 full-time staff. More than 200 individuals volunteered their time as coaches, tutors, mentors, teachers, and more. Families who support their children’s commitment, and SBU’s involvement, multiply SBU’s influence. We will be spending 2016 plotting our next steps. We aim to plant deeper roots in the South Bronx community, reach the lives of many more children and youth, build young community leaders, transform a 100% high school graduation into a 100% college readiness and a 94% college matriculation rate into a 94% college success rate. As we embark on this path, our door is always open. I enthusiastically welcome you to visit us to see the amazing things that are happening on the soccer field and in the classroom. Together with your support we will chart the next chapter in South Bronx United. Sincerely,

Andrew So, Executive Director

South Bronx United’s mission is to use soccer as a tool for social change. We aim to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, the greater community and beyond. We strive to promote educational achievement, health and wellness, and character development through activities on and off the soccer field and to unite a diverse group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community toward common positive goals.

South Bronx United’s programs contribute to the revitalization of the South Bronx and the empowerment of its youth. Through the SBU Academy, the organization aims to provide at-risk and immigrant youth a pathway from middle school to high school to college to careers

and a resource for youth and their families to access the resources they need. Over the next five years, SBU will increase the quality, depth, and breadth of the services it provides while planting stronger roots in the community.

MISSION AND VISION

5 SOUTH BRONX UNITED

Page 7: South Bronx United 2015 Annual Report

South Bronx United (SBU) has enriched the lives of boys and girls in the South Bronx community since 2009. The organization began with one team of 16 boys training on the corner of a muddy baseball field. Now, it serves nearly 900 children and youth between the ages of 4 and 19 each year, thanks to the support of 11 full-time staff and more than 200 dedicated volunteers. The most important work in South Bronx United occurs off the soccer field. SBU programs and services include academic enrichment, college prep, mentoring, leadership development, health

and wellness education, immigration legal services, and counseling. Through the SBU Academy, the organization provides a pathway from middle school to high school to college for South Bronx youth and a resource and outlet for immigrant youth and their families. To date, 100 young men and women have graduated through the SBU Academy and are now studying in college or employed. South Bronx United continues to support these young men and women until they earn their college degree.

PROGRAMS

“South Bronx United taught Bobby the importance of having fun and being less competitive. His communication and socialization skills also improved and inspired him to build a strong connection with other groups of children his age.”

- Carrie Agapito, Recreational Program Parent

The RECREATIONAL SOCCER PROGRAM teaches soccer in a fun, developmental environment at three sites on Saturdays during the fall and spring. Open afterschool sessions give children more chances to play. Select teams for ages 9-11 provide additional training and competitive opportunities. 604 Youth Served, Ages 4-19

SBU-CITY IN THE COMMUNITY (CITC) is a partnership with New York City FC and the City Football Foundation to provide afterschool soccer and health education at two elementary schools. SBU high school students and alumni build leadership skills and gain work experience serving as coaches and facilitators. The program feeds into one Recreational Soccer Program site at South Bronx High School.50 Youth Served (After school), Ages 7-10

“The young leaders delivering the program are working really hard to make lives better for children growing up and have become role models in their community.”

-Yaya Toure (Manchester City FC, Ivory Coast National Team) upon visiting South Bronx United CITC

Page 11: South Bronx United 2015 Annual Report

“Being a mentor, coach, and referee is one of my favorite

parts of the program, because every time I am with the kids, I’m reminded that I am an important figure in their lives. Knowing this,

encourages me to be the best person I can possibly be.”

- Mohamed Camara, 19, SBU Academy Class of 2015

“On a breezy, 78-degree Saturday afternoon in early September, more than a dozen teenagers file onto a small soccer field in the shadows of the Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York. Some sit on the sidelines, pulling on knee-high socks and bantering with their friends. Others help hook up two portable soccer goals and netting at opposite ends of the field. Their conversations alternate between fluent Spanish and broken English. These teens, who are members of the South Bronx United soccer program, appear like any of

the other soccer players in the surrounding two fields — happy, chatty, and matching in their blue-numbered uniforms. But most of these kids also carry the nightmares of violence and poverty in Central America, memories of a 2,500-mile journey across the U.S.-Mexico border, and the uncertainties of a looming court decision that will determine whether they get to permanently stay in this country.”

Nothing has been easy for Anayeli, Cesar, and Brayan since they settled in the Bronx with their mother five years ago. The siblings, who range in age from 14-17, spoke little English when they first arrived. Although there were many Spanish speakers in their neighborhood, fitting in at school and keeping up in class presented significant challenges. Soccer and SBU provided a community and an outlet. But SBU also provided much more. Soon after joining the program, a meeting with staff revealed that the three were eligible to apply for SpecialImmigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) due to family hardships they had faced. SIJS provides an avenue to obtain legal permanent residency, authorization to work, and the ability to receive federal financial aid for college. Since starting the process last year with SBU’s legal services coordinator, Anayeli and her brothers are well on their way towards gaining legal status and the ability to plan for their future in the United States.

IMMIGRANT SERVICES

In 2015, South Bronx United gained recognition from the Board of Immigration Appeals, allowing designated staff to practice immigration law and represent youth, families, and the community in proceedings before Immigration Court and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). SBU’s Legal Services Coordinator screens youth and their family members for legal supports, manages immigration relief cases, provides legal services, and offers information to community members on relevant

immigrant issues. These services are crucial in improving the lives of many youth and in helping them on the path towards college and careers. South Bronx United has supported youth and families gain work authorization, legal permanent residency, asylum, and citizenship, while particularly focusing on cases for undocumented youth that involve Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

In order to give youth strong academic foundations, open new doors for college, and diversify their life experiences, South Bronx United began supporting SBU Academy students in applying to boarding schools and prep schools in the Northeast. Four SBU Academy students started at

boarding schools in 2015, all receiving full scholarships. They are currently attending Lawrence Academy, Loomis Chaffee School, Mercersburg Academy, and the Northfield Mount Hermon School.

“I came thinking that soccer was the big mission [of South Bronx United] but you quickly figure out that soccer is just a way to open up more options for you.”

Gnim Bazim, 11th Grade, Mercersburg Academy

Gnim Bazim has been carving his own path since joining the SBU Academy. Gnim has resided in the Bronx since the age of 3, when he emigrated from Togo with his parents and sister. When his neighborhood friend lost his life due to gang activities, Gnim feared he could be headed down the same path. Luckily, he found South Bronx United in 2010 beginning in the Recreational Soccer program before joining the SBU 97 Strikers. He blossomed into a program leader, SBU Youth Council member, star defender and striker, and team captain. With the support of SBU staff, he transferred to Mercersburg Academy, a world-class boarding school in Central Pennsylvania. He started as a High School Junior in September 2015.

Gnim plans to study business and international relations in college and use the degree to create a program to help underserved children in West Africa.

The Summer Soccer Scholars is a five-week, full day program in July and August for SBU Academy youth. In 2015, 80 students attended classes including debate, physics, filmmaking, graphic design, and college prep. All students participated in a Teen Health class with a community partner, the Inwood House and spent

afternoons in soccer training and matches. Weekly field trips included canoeing at Orchard Beach, hiking and swimming at Bear Mountain State Park, Coney Island, and Six Flags Great Adventure. The majority of summer teachers, mentors, and coaches are college interns.

“ I have never met a group that was so driven, intelligent, and thoughtful. I’m so happy and grateful to have been a part of this program, and to have

contributed to the transformation and growth of these kind and talented kids.” - Jackie Aboulafia, Intern

“Focusing on my academics and making it my priority is a lesson which I learned back in the days as an SBU student-athlete.”

Sheick Wattara, 22, was a member of the SBU Class of 2011 and among the South Bronx United’s first graduates. He plans to graduate in May 2016 from SUNY Maritime College with a degree in Marine Business and Commerce and a minor in Humanities. At Maritime College, he has taken a unique path in that he also will obtain a United States Coast Guard Third Mates license after passing his final examinations. He has had some exciting and diverse experiences as both a student and an athlete. On board the Training Ship Empire State VI, he travelled throughout Europe, getting to see sights in Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom,. Sheick also competed on the SUNY Maritime Privateers men’s soccer team for four years. In 2011, he was on the conference champion team and competed in the NCAA Division III tournament. Sheick says the key has been focusing on being a student first and an athlete second. Whether it was showing up to games and practices on time or getting work done at tutoring session, responsibility was key.
