Our mission is to use soccer as a tool for social change. We

aim to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership

so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, the

greater community and beyond. We strive to promote educational

achievement, health and wellness, and character development

through activities on and off the soccer field and to unite a diverse

group of individuals and an incredibly diverse community toward

common positive goals.

Since 2009, South Bronx United (SBU) has enriched the lives of

boys and girls in the South Bronx community. The organization

began with one team of 16 boys training on the corner of

a muddy baseball field and has since grown into a community

of more than 600 children and youth, ages 4-19, and over 180

dedicated volunteers each year. SBU programs go well beyond

the soccer field, including academic enrichment, college prep,

mentoring, leadership development, immigration legal services,

and other social support services.

Through the SBU Academy, the organization provides a pathway

from middle school to high school to college for South Bronx

youth and a resource and outlet for immigrant youth and their

families. The organization and its programs strive to contribute

to the revitalization of the South Bronx.

Please explore the fol lowing pages to learn what South Bronx United

accomplished in 2014.

What a year we had! 2014, South Bronx United’s sixth year, brought a lot to be proud of, many youth to congratulate, and many more people to thank. Two

numbers stand out the most:

• 94% of SBU Academy seniors graduated high school on time.

• 100% of SBU Academy graduates have enrolled in college.

In comparison, consider that only 56% of students attending South Bronx high schools and 37% of New York City black and Latino

males graduate high school in four years….

Despite this success, SBU makes sure that high school graduation and college matriculation is just the first step. In August, we hired

a Director of College Placement and Alumni to work closest with our seniors and graduates to make sure that SBU youth are getting

the best possible education and setting themselves up for college and career success. This was far from the only big addition this year:

• SBU became Youth Soccer Affiliate of New York City FC, Major League Soccer’s newest team that will be kicking off its first

season at Yankee Stadium. Youth had the opportunity to play with Spanish World Cup star David Villa, coaches have received

training from Manchester City’s Rodolfo Borrell, Messi’s former youth coach, and more Bronx youth will have the opportunity to

play soccer as a result.

• SBU partnered with Catholic Charities and the South Bronx Health Center to provide a recreational outlet and support services

to some of the city’s most vulnerable youth, including a growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors. Meanwhile,

SBU screened over 200 individuals for immigration relief services thanks to the efforts of a new Legal Partnership Coordinator.

• SBU formalized a mentoring structure by assigning all seven SBU Academy travel teams a Team Mentor on staff to make sure

every participating youth has an adult who keeps an eye out for them in school, at home, and on the soccer field.

• Several other programs started or expanded, including Summer Soccer Scholars, SBU Youth Council, Sophomore Skills, Prep

School placements, and more.

Many youth were worthy of recognition in 2014, a number of whom you will read about in the following pages. Among them were Cesar

Gonzalez, Iyayi Imade, and Jose Lacayo, who became the first SBU Academy youth to complete the SBU Academy’s middle school to

college pathway. They joined South Bronx United in 2009 as 8th graders and started as college freshman last September.

There were also so many people to thank in 2014, from the 188 volunteers serving as tutors, coaches, mentors, and more; to

the now 10-person staff dedicating days, nights, and weekends to enriching youth’s lives; to the parents and families who support their

children’s commitment; to the hundreds of new and returning donors who make SBU programming possible.

Thus, it is with great pride that I present to you the following report on South Bronx United and its growth in 2014. I welcome

you to visit us in 2015 to see for yourself the amazing things that are happening on the soccer field and in the classroom.

Sincerely,

Andrew So

South Bronx United’s Summer Soccer Scholars is a free,

five-week, full-day program that provides 80 students from

the SBU Academy with engaging academic classes, a

leadership curriculum facilitated by Changing the Odds at the

Morris Heights Health Center, college and SAT prep for rising

seniors, and fitness and soccer training. College student interns

serve as teachers and mentors. This year all students studied

magazine or sports journalism and environmental science,

culminating this summer with a trip to the Tiorati Nature Center

at Harriman State Park to engage in scientific inquiry work

facilitated by a Bank Street College of Education program.

Weekly field trips included canoeing at Orchard Beach, hiking and

swimming at Bear Mountain State Park, Coney Island, and Six

Flags Great Adventure.

BAKARY COULIBALY, 12TH GRADE, SBU 95 BLUE DEVILS

In 1998, when Bakary was two-years-old, his family fled civil war in the Republic of

the Congo. His mother took him, his older brother Hackou and younger sister Aminata

to the safety of the Ivory Coast. His father left for Egypt and then the United States in

search of work. A year later, the family fled again, after fighting broke out in its new home,

and settled in Mali. Soon after that, Bakary’s mother moved to New York to be with her

husband, leaving her three children to grow up with their uncle in Nioro du Sahel, in the

Sahara desert on the border between Mali and Mauritania. Bakary didn’t see either of his

parents again until he was 15. In June 2011, they brought him to live with them and his

two American-born younger brothers, in Soundview, in the Bronx.

Before he came to America, Bakary had never played on a real soccer field;

just rocky patches of bare earth back in Mali. His first practice with South Bronx

United in October 2011 was overwhelming. He was shy and barely spoke English --

his first languages are French and Bambara. He’d never played with a real soccer ball,

just cheap plastic imitations, and he’d never worn cleats before. Running in shoes

was awkward.

KALIFALAH KENNEH, 8TH GRADE, SBU 00 LA FURIA AZUL

I have grown on and off the field since I joined South Bronx United through the Recreational

Program in 2010. I was able to join the travel team because SBU saw potential in me

that most people did not. I used to be overweight, but SBU helped me get in shape and

become a better player. If you’re not the best player physically, then they tell you to be

the best player mentally. SBU is not only about soccer like other clubs. It is also about

education. The program helps you on and off the field, they help you with what you need

help with, and they give you good advice. South Bronx United provided me resources

and money that I needed to study for and take the admissions test for preparatory high

schools. Because of SBU, I am on my way to a great high school next year. SBU has

had a great impact on my life.

“SBU is not only about soccer like other clubs. It is also

about education.”

BRENDA CASIMIRO, 12TH GRADE, SBU RISING STARS

Before coming to South Bronx United, I didn’t care much for school, nor did I care about

going to college. I was going to be another statistic, a dropout who gets pregnant at an

early age. SBU required tutoring and SAT Prep. I didn’t want to go but I went because of

soccer. On my first day, I didn’t understand the work. SBU helped me through it. They

didn’t leave me alone. They chased after me. They offered extra help. They had faith in

me. I became a referee, coach, and recreational league manager. I helped create the SBU

Youth Council and have met new people who help me grow stronger. Now, as a senior I

want to be the first in my family to go to college. SBU has been the best thing that has

happened to me. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“… I want to be the first in my family to go to college.”

Fourteen years ago, four-year-old Aicha and her family fled war-

torn Sierra Leone on foot over the border to Guinea. At that

time, it was unimaginable that the Aicha would go on to college,

let alone attend the City College of New York on a $4,000 college

scholarship through South Bronx United.

Aicha immigrated to the United States to live with

her aunt in the Bronx. She joined South Bronx United for the

inaugural season of the SBU Rising Stars in 2011, and maintained

an excellent academic record, graduating as the valedictorian of

Bronx Latin High School with a 4.0 GPA. Without the scholarship,

Aicha would have been unable to attend college this fall due to

complications with her immigration status. Her situation has

since been resolved putting her on the path to college success

and an anticipated degree in a liberal arts field.

Guibel received a $1,000 PlaySoccer2Give-South Bronx United

college scholarship that has supported her during her freshman

year at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Guibel moved

from Ecuador when she was 9 years old. She has been part of

South Bronx United and the SBU Rising Stars high school girls

soccer team for three years and has also volunteered with the

recreational program and U14 girls program. She graduated in

June from University Prep Charter High School where she earned

a 3.2 GPA. Guibel intends to major in Industrial and Mechanical

Engineering or Applied Mathematics and has been very involved

in the community. She serves as the Freshman Representative

to the Latin American Student Association and attending a

conference in Michigan on behalf of the Society of Hispanic

Professional Engineers.

“South Bronx United opens doors for youth like myself who want to be community leaders and provides a platform for their voices to be heard…. I enjoyed exploring

cultures and learning from people with contrasting backgrounds.” - Aicha Fofana, City College of New York

“My first semester of college was full of hard work. Thanks to South Bronx United I was able to adjust to the environment and overcome every challenge.”

2014 was my most successful year since I came to Morrisville.

On the soccer field, I accomplished a lot individually and the

team as a whole had our best season, despite a 1-0 loss in

the NCAA tournament to powerhouse Messiah College, the

defending NCAA champion who had only lost four games in six

years. I was named to the all-conference first team for the first

time. As a team, we made it to our third consecutive conference

tournament final. This time we ended up winning, bouncing back

from the painful defeat a year earlier. We were fortunate to host

the NCAA Division III tournament competition for the first time

ever and went on to win our first round match.

Another special part of the season was having four other SBU

members join the team. Together we created more memories on

and off the field and worked really hard for the team. Two of the

new freshman, Julian Rodriguez and Jamieson McKoy earned

well-deserved Second Team All-Conference recognition, while

Jamieson went on to be recognized as the Most Valuable Player

in the NEAC tournament. The three of us received numerous

other players of the week honors as well. A third freshman, Yusuf

Saunders had the game winning penalty kick to send us through

to the second round of NCAA. To add to this, fellow junior and

SBU Alum Karim Ouedraogo received a coach’s award for being

a monster at the left of defense. Next year will be my last season

playing for Morrisville State College, and it will be a bittersweet

moment once again.

Excerpt from “An SBU Family becomes NEAC Champions” on http://blog.southbronxunited.org

“South Bronx United has always been, and still is, my second family….

Looking at how far South Bronx United has come and the direction it’s heading

now, it is quite impressive.”- Jeffrey Hado, Junior, Morrisville State College

Pursuing a Bachelor’s of Business Administration

“In the last five years, SBU has helped me focus

on school and build better character on and off the

field. SBU showed me the importance of education.

It helped me improve my soccer skills as well as my

grades. I have changed as a person and made it to

college. SBU helped make that possible.”- Cesar Gonzalez, 18
