Solon Relay For Life
June 10-11, 2011
A Note from Shari Singer and SharonDail Ramirez, Relay Co-Chairs:
Visualize a tailgate party...can't you just see the fans, joined together with family and friends, surrounded by
food and fun? Excitement is in the air and the fans are excited for the big game and the anticipation of
their team winning. The fans know that their cheering and energy will root their team on to victory.
Well, Relay is sort of the same - we are all here together, joined together in a common cause, excitement in
the air, because we too know that together we're making a difference in the results of our game. Our
game, is a lot more serious, however. Our game is the battle in the fight against cancer and the ultimate
victory for us, of course is the day when no one has to play.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
We want to express a special thanks to two of our biggest cheerleaders, Shirley Culverhouse and Harvey
Freedman. Their enthusiasm inspires us all to be better fans and drive this game home to victory.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
A special shout-out to Jenifer Malarkey, our champion of chocolate, who through her efforts enables our
teams to raise the roof on fundraising. Also, a huge thanks to our Team Captains. You are the amazing
mascots who keep the spirit alive and the money coming!
And finally, we are so appreciative of the efforts of the following individuals who have been the most pas-
sionate fans: Jamie Faciana, Suzi Castiglione, Brianna Razzante, Sheryl Stanowick, Bruce Rutsky, Gary
Bleiweiss, Margaret Gonsalves, Dawn Fade and Family, Molly Smith and Robin LePorte.
A Note from Susan Drucker, Mayor, City of Solon:
Welcome to all of the participants in Solon’s 2011 Relay for Life. Each year we look forward to hosting this important and vital community event. It is both important and admirable to have families, friends, and neighbors come together to support the fight against cancer, and become a part of the American Cancer Society’s national signature event. Gathering together in this concerted effort illustrates our belief that there will be a cure, and that our community is committed to help take up the fight.
I offer special thanks to all the organizers, participants, volunteers, and businesses that help to make this event so special. On behalf of City Council and the entire Solon Community, we applaud and welcome you and your teams!

COACH JOHNS’ JOGGERS are made up of Solon High School girls, recent graduates, and Solon girls returning to participate in Relay. All of the girls com-pete or have competed in cross country and track at
SHS. They all come together at Relay to honor and support their former cross country coach, Anne Johns, who is a cancer survivor for over 4 years. For some of the girls, this is their 7th year raising money for the American Cancer Society through Relay.
Team KICKER GG and the SOLON STRAY CATS continue our campaign against cancer. Our team is dedicated to the memory of Glen Gonsalves and our Chagrin Highlands neighbors and friends who have
been affected by cancer. We are committed to finding a cure for cancer and are grateful to all our neighbors, friends, family, and coworkers who are supporting us in this effort.
Our newly formed team, SOLON SAFETY FORCES, is dedicating our team in honor of our members who have lost their fight to cancer, and to family members waging a strong battle to overcome this deadly dis-ease. We honor fallen Solon Police/Fire Dispatcher
Mary Linda Linn (July 19, 2007), and Solon Fire Fighter Kurt Schulze (February 23, 2008), and cancer survivor Bill Visocan. Linda and Kurt are both dearly missed and are in our thoughts and prayers. We dedicate this walk to you.
SOLON ITALIAN CLUB “Paisani per la cura” means “friends for the cure” in Italian. Members of the Solon Italian Club have come together in our first Relay for Life to honor members, family and friends who have lost their battle with can-
cer…and those who are bravely combating this terrible disease. Being Italian is more than pasta, bocce and World Cup soccer. It’s a part of our culture and the fiber of our existence to sup-port, love and care for one another as family – in good times and bad. It’s what we do – and who we are. “Paisani ora e per sempre” – Friends now and always.
SENSATIONAL SOLON SENIORS The
Sensational Solon Seniors team formed
several years ago through the Solon
Senior Center to honor those who have
been affected by cancer. Many Senior Center members
are cancer survivors themselves and our team dedicates
the Relay in honor of their friends and loved ones who
continue to overcome this disease; while also remember-
ing to celebrate and treasure the memories of those who
struggled and lost their battle. We cherish every moment
of life and truly believe that together, we will find the
Cure!
KIDS FOR A CURE is a relay team that was started by Samantha Singer in honor of her mom who is a cancer survivor. Samantha is joined on
her team by many high school students who care about finding a cure for cancer. “Good luck to everyone and just have fun!” says Samantha and her teammates. “It’s going to be great!”
TEAM AYLESHIRE was started in 2001 by Shari Singer in memory of her father who died from prostate cancer. Team Ayleshire is made up of neighbors from the Ayleshire development
and expanded to include some of Shari’s non-Ayleshire friends when she was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago. We are dedicated to finding a cure!
The SOLON SOCCER TEAM, players and parents, is proud to participate in this year’s Solon Relay for Life. Most of us have been touched by Cancer in some way, large or small. It is our hope that through
our fundraising and our participation at Relay, that in some small way we are helping to defeat this dreadful disease. We take great pride in honoring our Survivors and remembering those who have passed on.
TEAM RAMIREZ is a great group of friends who come together each year to show their support in this fight against cancer. Each of these women has a story about how they are touched by cancer, either personally, through a family member or a
beloved friend. Each member is passionate about ending can-cer and walks in support of the efforts of Relay For Life.
At JORDAN CENTER DANCE, artistic directors, Mary Spaniola and Jordan Leitson, strongly believe in giving back to the community and teaching their students to work as a team to accomplish
goals.Contributing to the City Mission, Salvation Army’s “Adopt a family for the Holidays”, and Relay for Life are just a few of the many charitable endeavors that JCD dancers participate in each year. The dancers are not motivated by incentives, but rather for the rewarding feeling received from giving to oth-ers. This will be the ninth year that members from JCD have participated in the Solon Relay for Life.
REICHERT & MUSIC is made of up music stu-dents from Solon High School and gradu-ates. Our team is dedicated to the memory of our music teacher, Miss Rebecca Reichert and other friends and family members who have
been affected by cancer. In our fourth year of fundraising, we hope to get closer to finding a cure.
TEAM TIE-DYE consists of high school girls that are relaying for family members, friends, and neighbors that have battled cancer. This name
was chosen for each girl to represent a different type of can-cer. The members want everyone to be aware of all the kinds out there and learn a little information about each one. To-gether we'll raise money and hope to find a cure!
AMANDA’S AMAZING ANGELZ Solon middle school student Amanda attended her first relay in 2009 as a cancer survivor. She started the
Amanda's Amazing Angelz team with her friends because they wanted to be a team of hope for other kids with cancer. The team wants to raise funds to support cancer research that provides cures for all child and adult cancers.
This is WILD THAANG’S 5th year doing Solons Relay. We are a group of soon to be junior girls at the high school. All of us relay for many different reasons; many of us have been touched closely by
cancer, relay is a great cause, and it's a ton of fun!
WALKING FOR HOPE My teamates and I have created a team for Relay for Life to give hope to surviors and families. We all have a close tie with Relay and just want to raise
money and have a good time. Relay just brings happiness and optimism and that's what my teamates and I want to bring more of; along with many other teams. My team is pumped and can't wait to walk, raise money, and have a whole lot of fun!
BURWELL’S BUDDIES - This is our 7th Solon
Relay For Life although this year we are only here in spirit. The team was started in 2004 by Solon resident, the Honorable, Harry Jacob III.
Harry and I go way back to 4th grade growing up together in
Chagrin Falls, playing soccer for the Tigers and later for Kent State, and of course remaining neighbors and friends here on Southside Park Drive.
LAX MEN FOR KATER The Solon lacrosse team from Solon High School is in its second year of Relay in support and in honor of Mrs. Gail Kater. Gail was the devoted lacrosse mom for the team until her son, Scot, left to go to college. The
team wants to continue to support her and recognize her ef-forts to battle this disease.
KIDZ AGAINST CANCER is made up of Solon Students from Solon Middle School and Orchard Middle School. This is the second year of Kidz Against Cancer, it was
started by Douglas Rich and Carly Waxman as their mitzvah projects for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. The team continues to raise money for Relay in support of many of their family members who have been touched by Cancer.
ROCKIN REALTORS is a group of local real estate professionals united for a cause. Each of us has been touched by Cancer, and want to help raise funds to find a cure. We dedicate this walk to friends we’ve lost, Suzan Pejak and
Barbara Shine, and to honor those friends and family mem-bers who are survivors. Thanks to all who contributed to our efforts!
RUTSKY’S RAIDERS relays in honor of Salli Rutsky, a two time Cancer Survivor. Rustky’s Raiders wish all participants and survivors the best of luck at Relay and in the future!
WHOVILLE is participating in Relay For Life this year because of a strong connection each team member feels toward a very strong 16 year old, Hannah Hicks. Hannah was diag-nosed with Osteosarcoma in July of 2009 and
from this we realized that each and everyone of us look up to Hannah as someone who is strong, determined, and can turn any negative situation into a positive one. We are so proud of Hannah for winning her battle with cancer after 9 months of treatment, and want to give to those who are still fighting, celebrate those who have won their battles and remember those who have lost their fight. Hannah has showed each of us we can make a difference and fight for something we really want. We want to show Hannah how proud we are of her and how much we care through this very special event, and HELP EVERYONE WIN THEIR BATTLES WITH CANCER!
