Caroline Musinski is an 8 year old girl. Her Nanny and one of her very best friends are cancer survivors. For the past 4 years, Peppermills, the family business, has had a Relay for Life team. Caroline and her brother, Thomas, have only great memories of the total blast they have had while participating in the Relay for Life.

This is one of the hightlights of their summer! They really get a sense of the community and people they know working together towards a common goal while having a good time.

This year, Caroline was listening to some members of our team talk about how it’s going to be hard to get people to donate money because of this tough economy. She then just blurts out, “Mommy, how about we sell those Pee Wee Scout cookies that I love so much?” The recipe comes from a book series her 2nd grade class reads. We got together with some team members and baked for hours.

Starting the cookie sale on the night of the Relay fundraiser, “Dine Out for Cancer”, we sold out very quickly. Caroline has been selling the cookies at Peppermills, hitting people up as they exit ever since.

Her good friend Shawn Devlin invited Caroline and her friend Frankie to sell her cookies alongside his lemonade stand that he uses to raise money for his team, “Missy’s Wild Ones”. Together the teams had a great day.

Relay For Life is a Team Event to Fight CancerRelay For Life really is a community event and there have been so many individuals and businesses that have contributed that we are unable to list them all. We appreciate each and every person’s involvement. Thank you for your contribution of time, money and energy. Because of your continued support and teamwork, we are making progress each day to our ultimate goal of eliminating cancer!

• Please do not walk on the playing field

• No dogs, smoking or alcohol

• No vehicles on the track

• No open fires or fire pits

• No gas generators

• No running during the luminaria ceremony

• No loud music between the hours of midnight and 6:00 a.m.

• At least one team member must be on the track at all times

• The inside lane of the track is reserved for runners

• Track direction will be changed every four hours

• The concession stand will be open throughout the event

• Water and coffee will be free throughout the event

• Restrooms are available in the booster club building and in the building by the school

• In the event of a thunderstorm, please take cover in your vehicles or in the school cafeteria

• Youths under 18 staying overnight on a team must be yellow banded by 12 a.m. and have a chaperone sheet signed and on file at the registration tent

Thank You to Our TeamsI am a 31 year survivor of Willie’s Disease (this is supposed to be the Mother cell of all cancers). I was diagnosed in 1976 when cancer treatment was really in its infancy and I was 13 years old. My old friend, Dr. Mark Donavan, was my internist and Dr. Loy was the surgeon who did my biopsy. That biopsy went much further than I had ever traveled, touching many different cancer research centers. Finally, after time, the diagnosis returned from Texas with a course of action. Chemotherapy and radiation were prescribed and we all went to work; the doctors to treat and me to endure. One of the therapies was vin cristin and another was cytoxen, both drugs are still being used today. My therapy continued for many months, I lost my hair, dropped much weight and survived for months on Twinkies and M&M’s, the only food that had any taste at all. And I watched the stress affect my parents.

After my treatments were started here in Bennington, I was sent to Burlington to see a surgeon from England who was here to work on another patient. He was a specialist who understood the area at the base of my neck and upon operating, he did find many more cancer cell clusters that had started and he was able to remove them. When I stop to think about what would have happened had I not met this wonderful, knowledgeable doctor, it leaves me breathless. After the second surgery, the treatments were resumed in Burlington until I could come back to Bennington. Here at home treatments were done in the Lodge at the hospital by Dr. Donavan.

For once in my life my overweight condition was a virtual lifesaver. The doctors said that normally this cancer traveled to the bones, but in my case, it lodged in the fat cells which gave me a much better fighting chance.

Now, 31 years later, I am healthy, working every day in my own business and am well known for my white pesto pizza. Stop in and say “Hi!”
