Nominal Capacitance is nominal rated capacity of tantalum capacitor and is measured at 120 Hz, up to 1.0volt rms, and+25°C. DC bias causes only a small reduction in capacitance when full rated voltage is applied. Capacitance decreases with increasing frequency and increases with increasing temperature. Capacitance value decreases until gets to its SRF (between 0.5-5MHz, depending on different Capacitance value). Capacitor becomes inductive at frequency exceeding SRF.

Dissipation Factor is the measure of energy loss in tantalum capacitor. It is measured at 120 Hz, up to 1.0 volt rmsmaximum, and +25°C. The application of DC bias causes a small reduction in DF when full rated voltage is applied. Dissipation Factor is defined as the ratio between dissipation energy and accumulated energy, which is the ratio of the equivalent series resistance (ESR) to the capacitive reactance, (XC) and is usually expressed as a percentage. It is directly proportional to both capacitance and frequency. DF is also referred to as tanδ or “loss tangent.” The “Quality Factor,” “Q,” is the reciprocal of DF. DF increases with increasing frequency and decreases with temperature above +25°C and may also increase at lower temperatures.

A large ESR decrease the efficient of DC-DC converter and rise the ripple voltage.
Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) is a total resistive loss of tantalum capacitor including internal resistance, contact resistance, the viscous force of dielectric and the defects caused by bypass channels. The main contributing source of ESR is the resistance of tantalum capacitor’s cathode material. ESR is not a pure resistance, and it decreases with increasing frequency. Thelevel of ESR affects tantalum capacitor’s capacity of withstanding surge current.

1. The reliability of Ta capacitor is influenced by many ambient condition elements, such as temperature, humidity, application force etc, margin designing is necessary to improve the reliability of Ta capacitor.
2. Take measures to make sure that Ta capacitors work in a Min. ripple current and voltage condition.
3. These capacitors are inherently polar devices and may be permanently damaged or destroyed if applied reverse voltage. But if reverse voltage can’t avoid, it must not exceed:
1)10% of VR or 1V at 25℃;
2)5% of VR or 0.5V at 85℃;
3)1% of VR or 0.1V at 125℃;

4. In order to achieve high reliability, working voltage should obey:1) For general use, working voltage should be of 70% of VR or below.
For power lines or some low-impedance circuit, working voltage should be of 30% of VR or below.
2) When operating temperature is above 85℃(below 125 ℃), voltage derating is necessary:

5. When Ta capacitor are used in circuit where surge current may occurred, a small value resistor is needed to connect in series with capacitor to prevent from damaging.
6. Margin designing is necessary to improve the reliability of Ta capacitor especially in some circuit that easily lead to short-circuit.
