Jesus teaches us that when certain conditions are lacking, courteous social in- teraction deteriorates. Being courteous with others is per- haps the best form of introduction. And what we might call the "virtues of social interaction" are the prerequisite and setting for the jewel of charity. Table manners It is becoming more and more frequent today, in every sector of society, for both the father and mother to work outside the home. Often both incomes are needed to make ends meet. The difficulties posed by timetables and travel for spending time together as a family are often quite daunting. This is not to say that in former times, when it was easier to eat as a family, those gatherings always went smoothly, what with the wrangling among the chil- dren or their complaining about the food, and their par- ents' scolding them.... Much like what happens nowa- days, since things have basically changed very little. But now, as back then, it is a matter of taking advantage of the opportunities that life offers, and striving to turn the obstacles into formative occasions. How often have we really tried, for example, to turn the evening meal during the week or meals on week- ends into family gatherings? Social researchers have pro- duced studies showing boys and girls ticking the box eating as a family as the most important item for them. To be with those who love us, to share, to be un- derstood, are ways of learning social interaction, learning to give oneself to others. Thus relationships between the members of the family are strengthened, and parents are provided with informal opportunities to get to know their children better and to anticipate possible difficulties. How many opportunities are offered by family meals to stress small point of politeness: "I'd be grateful if you could go get the salt." "Have you washed your hands before sitting down?" "Sit up straight and don't cross your legs when you eat." "Can you help your broth- er to set the table (or put things away)?" "Bread is not thrown away." "Hold your fork properly." Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

Rev. Canon Olivier Meney Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland

Canon Meney - (510) 604-0391 or [email protected]

YOU ARE AT SAINT MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH HUB OF THE LATIN MASS LITURGY IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA

The Traditional Latin Mass (now called by the Holy Father: Mass in the Extraordinary Form) is brought to you through the ministry of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST?

The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the ser-vice of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated.

Recognizing the importance of a deep harmony between faith, liturgy, life, and the power of beauty in

attracting the human senses to the things above, an integral part of the Institute’s charism is the use of the traditional Latin Liturgy of 1962 for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the other sacraments. Great care for a solemn liturgy, complete fidelity to the doctrine of the Church and the Holy Father, and awareness of the central role of Grace, especially Charity – these are essential elements of the Institute’s spirituality, which is drawn from its three co-patrons, St. Benedict, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Francis de Sales.

Our motto is “Live the truth in charity." The Institute operates in more than fifty places in twelve countries, where our priests focus on the care of souls in many different ways. To assist our priests in their apostolic work, the Institute also has clerical oblates. In 2004, a community of religious sisters was canonically established to aid the priests in their mis-sion through prayer and apostolic work.

The Institute was founded in 1990 by Monsignor Gilles Wach. Today, the motherhouse and international seminary of the Institute is located in Gricigliano, in the Archdiocese of Florence, Italy.

The Institute serves the faithful of the Bay since 2005 at St. Margaret Mary in Oakland and at Five Wounds in San Jose (Mass at 12:30 pm on Sunday, 12:15 pm on Weekdays but Sat. at 7:30 am)

ANNOUNCEMENTS (continued): (Continued from page 3) \

(Continued on page 5)

What Love Is From the mother bird defending her nest of young to the martyr dying for the Faith, love pours itself out in zeal of the right kind. But the wicked can also be zealous for the evil which they love, whether it be the miser for his gold, or the adulterer for his accomplice, or the Communist for his world revolu-tion. Those things for which we would spend our en-ergy to defend, or die to keep, are the measures of our zeal! Love is the cause of everything we do. The sub-jects we talk about, the persons we hate, the ideals we pursue, the things that make us angry, these are indi-cators of our hearts. Few realize how much they be-tray their characters in revealing what their hearts love most. "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh." If our loves are wrong, our lives are wrong, as well. What zeal is to religion, fidelity and fecundity are to marriage: devotion to the person loved, and the extension of that love in the family. This fidelity is not born of habit which is akin to organic or econom-ic necessity; rather, it is an affirmation that this per-son has an absolute significance for life. This kind of zeal not only crushes all alien biological desires; it also is based on the fact that the other person is the one whom God has willed for us, "for better or for-worse, for richer or poorer, until death do us part." As Euripides said: "He is not a lover who does not love forever." And as Shakespeare sang: Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no; it is an ever-fixed mark, That looks on tempests, and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken. Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks Within his bending sickle's compass come: Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, But bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error, and upon me prov'd, I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd. Zeal also manifests itself spiritually, in bring-ing other souls to God and physically, by begetting children for God. Fruitfulness is the natural effect of the love of tree and earth, of missionary and pagan, of husband and wife. Love does not thrive on modera-tion. Zeal is generosity. (From Three To Get Married by Fulton Sheen)

Epiphany of Our Lord Epiphany, or Theophany, means the Manifes-tation of God; today it is realized in Jesus who mani-fests Himself as God and Lord of the world. Already a prodigy has revealed His divinity—the extraordinary star which appeared in the East. “We have seen His star in the East and are come with gifts to adore Him,” the Magi said. They saw the star and immediately set out. They had no doubts: their unbounded faith was strong and sure. They did not hesitate at the prospect of the trials of a long journey: they had generous hearts. They did not postpone their journey: their souls were ready. A star often appears in the heaven of our souls; it is an inspiration from God, clear and intimate, urg-ing us to greater generosity and calling us to a life of closer union with Him. Like the Magi, we too must follow our star with faith, promptness, and selfless generosity. If we allow it to guide us, it will certainly lea us to God; it will bring us to the One whom we are seeking. The Magi did not give up their quest, although the star—at one point—disappeared from their sight. We should follow their example and their persever-ance, even when we are in interior darkness. This is a trial of faith which is overcome only by the exercise of pure, naked faith. I know that He wills it, I know that God is calling, and this suffices from me: Sic cui credidi et certus sum (2Tim1:12); I know who I have believed. No matter what happens, I shall trust Him. In this spirit let us accompany the Magi to adore the new-born King. “And as they brought forth from among their treasures mystical gifts, let us from our hearts bring forth something fit to offer Him.” O Jesus, I adore You, for You are the Lord my God. “For You, my Lord, are a great God, and a great King above all kings. For in Your Hand are al the ends of the earth, and the heights of the mountains are Yours. For the sea is Yours, and You made it; and Your hands formed the dry land….We are the people of Your pasture and the sheep of Your hand” (Ps. 94). Yes, O Jesus, I am one of Your lambs, one of your creatures; and I am happy to acknowledge my noth-ingness in Your presence, and still happier to adore You, O lovely Infant, as my God and my Redeemer. O that all nations would acknowledge You for what You are, that all might prostrate before You, adoring You as their Lord and God. O Lord, You can do this. Reveal Your divini-ty to all mankind, and just as once You drew the Magi from the East to You, now in like manner unite all peoples and all nations around Your manger. (From Divine Intimacy by Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene, OCD).
