Social media is everywhere.
Social media matters.
It connects people, places, companies...
You don’t have to like it, or even do it, BUT -
You DO need to have a basic understanding.
Social media is where many of our customers are.
We need to be there too.
Let’s race through the major ones.
All we need to know for now is who some of the major players in social media and what they offer.

One of the earliest social networking sites.
It has rebranded a couple of times, but most adults see it as very “teeny”.

Social site that’s part of Google set of products.
Google+ button used 5 billion times per day.
Expect 400 million users by Dec 2012.
China and Iran block, or slow, access to site.

Social media can help us stay current.
Social media can be a good source of information.
What next?
Nothing, if you don’t want to.
But as professional library staff, I’d encourage you to explore social media and understand what our customers are doing and where they hang out.
I use social media a lot.
It doesn’t take a lot of time.
I learn a lot from other people.
I think it is important for my career.
