See & do

The Deer Park right next to Hauz Khas Village is seen vibrating with sounds of percussion drums & vari-ous other instruments per-fectly tuned together, every Sunday in the capital city. Find out more about this open circle of music lovers.

Play, Dance, RejuvenateThey call themselves the Delhi Drum Circle, started by Mr. Rakesh Mathur about 6 yrs back and ever since then, the trend has caught on. Even now when the founder of the group isn’t around, one can still find the others playing at the same spot every week, creating an ethereal experience.

Open to anyone & everyone, the “cir-cle” so to say, accommodates people from all walks of life, irrespective of age. You would find people ranging from the age of 7 upto the age of 60 here, simply enjoying the music!

They usually start around 5 PM and go on for an hour or so. People are wel-come to bring their own instruments

& play along. Most of them carry a djembe (a western-Af-rican drum), some a dhol and other instruments can be witnessed such as the sax-ophone, guitar, xylophone & flute etc. They announce their meetings on their Facebook group page which has over 8,500 members.

A Ritual in ItselfThe DDC has attracted countless locals, many of which are such a major part of the circle that it is now become almost like a ritual. From students, lawyers & doctors to pho-tographers, poets & artists, you see them all. You can also spot some for-eigners lost in the music.

Some describe it as their passion, while for others it is a form of rejuve-nation. So go be a part of this pure and trance like experience every weekend.

See & Do8

Bhuli Bhatiyari Ka Mahal

Delhi criss-crossed by various cultures brims over with tales from the days of yore & with such an impressive reposi-tory up its sleeve, it has its fair share of ghost stories. Bhuli Bhatiyari ka Mahal, on the central ridge, is one such place.

The building was constructed as a hunting lodge by Firoz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th Century & forms a part of the three hunting lodges that were built by him over the ridge (Pir Ghaib & Malcha Mahal being the other two).Looking at its small chambers, the structure must have doubled up as a Sarai (inn) when not housing the king’s hunting party. The name, as it goes, is derived from Bu-Ali Bhatti’s name (the female caretaker of the lodge) which got twisted to Bhuli Bhatiyari. The entry from the North-East, interestingly, is twin-gated which is strange for a ‘not so’ impor-tant structure.

The inside is a large courtyard with small rooms dotting each vertex of the rectangular boundary. The innards are deplorable, but nothing better can be expected of something left unoccu-pied for centuries, although restora-tion programmes have started of late.

There is a Bund (embankment) encir-cling the entire structure, but it is visible only in certain places now, the rest weathered away or eaten up by the village roads. The southern & eastern walls feature bastions & there are remnants of a raised pavil-ion near the southern embankment.

It is a 10 minute walk from the Jhandewalan metro, a narrow village road branching out hardly 50 metres onto the road leading to Dhaula Kuan. People may not know the monument by its name so a reference to the haunted should help!

Talk the Talk 17

Tell us about yourself in a

few lines: I am a freelance food writer, recipe developer & photographer. Food is my passion - baking, cooking, using fresh seasonal produce & local products, keeping a check on my carbon foot-print and being a responsible foodie! I enjoy food styling, food photography, healthy recipe development & product reviews.

1) What makes Delhi, ‘So Delhi’!

The vibrancy, the food, the new that blends seamlessly into the old all spells Delhi. Wide treelined avenues, maddening traffic, butter chicken, beautiful winters, a diaspora of resi-dents, heritage buildings, the charm of Old Delhi… all of this is ‘So Delhi’!

2) Old Delhi or New Delhi – Pick your

preference?

Old Delhi as every corner you turn has the unexpected. People, faces, expressions, buildings, the cacoph-ony, Jama Masjid, roadside Bazaars, street food all call out my name!

3) Your favourite restaurant in Delhi?

Olive Bar & Kitchen, Mehrauli.

4) One misconception about Delhi?

“Every auto driver will fleece you” I have had so many good experiences

with auto drivers, honest, hard-working, good souls that I can vouch for most of them!

5) One thing you would want

to change about Delhi?

Public manners.

6) An unforgettable experi-

ence in the capital?

Walking down the street across Jama Masjid & seeing a line of lamb heads on sale!

7) Your favourite book on Delhi?

Sam Miller’s ‘Delhi: Adventures in a Megacity’.

8) Best place to shop in Delhi?

Janpath (Tibetan market & Central Cottage Emporium).

9) Why is Delhi much more than a

transit city?

Because it begs you to stay just a little longer. You cannot grab the essence of the city in a day; 4-5 days are the mini-mum to experience its magic.

10) A piece of first-hand advice on

the Capital City.

If visiting Delhi, please try and find a contact before getting here.
