It’s a Brand New Year for Rotary
Beginning July 1, 2013, our new Rotary year starts. This year’s Rotary
theme is Engage Rotary - Change Lives.
Ron D. Burton, our 2013-14 Rotary International President says “Being a Rotarian is a commitment that goes far beyond just showing up at meetings once a week. It means seeing the world and our role in it, in a unique way. It means accepting our communities as our responsibility, and acting accordingly: taking the initiative, making the effort, and doing what’s right, not what is easy.” RI President Burton has challenged Rotarians to get involved and to make difference. He reminds us that in Rotary service, as in just about everything else in life, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. Many call this their Rotary Moment, when it all comes together and you feel like a true Rotarian - when you make that emotional connection to your community through your actions as a Rotarian. RI President Burton reminds us all that every one of us in Rotary is here because we were invited, and because we made a choice to accept that
invitation. Every day since then, we’ve been faced with another choice: whether to just be a member of a Rotary club, or to truly be a Rotarian. During this coming year, under the leadership of our new club president, Jim Peasley, the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club will be heeding the words spoken above. One of his first priorities is to fulfill one of our strategic planning goals and that is to hold a community needs assessment forum
so that our club can connect with our communities’ members and leaders to discuss how Rotary can make a difference in serving our Santee and Lakeside communities.
You’ve chosen to wear a Rotary pin. The rest is up to you.
Ron D. Burton, 2013-14 RI President

TTThhheee OOObbbjjjeeecccttt ooofff RRRoootttaaarrryyy The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying
of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each
Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FORTH: The advancement of internal understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons untied in the ideal of service.

On the Polio Front
At the Rotary International convention held last month in Lisbon, Portugal, a new fundraising agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation (Gates Foundation) was announced by the Gates Foundation’s CEO, Jeff Raikes. This renewed fundraising partnership is hoped to inject millions of new dollars into the final push to eradicate polio, a goal both Rotary and the Gates Foundation believes is doable. Under the agreement, the Gates Foundation said it will match two-to-one every new dollar that Rotary commits to polio eradication up to $35 million a year, over five years. That could total $525 million, including $175 million from the Rotary Foundation and $350 million from the Gates Foundation for polio immunization programs. The Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club is committed to participating in this
fundraising effort and will continue to do its part in aiding Rotary
International in achieving its goal of eradicating polio.

Membership Dues
CLUB MEMBERS: Your Annual Member Information/Pledge Form is DUE! This form stipulates how your fees are collected and in what amount. This is a critical document that needs to be given to our Club Treasurer, Bill Pommering as soon as possible. We need to be able to communicate with RI our Club membership as of July 1, 2013 and send in our requisite dues. It is also needed so that we can budget
anticipated revenues for the coming year. New this year: Club members can make the determination to either pay their annual dues in one installment due this month or they can pay semi-annually, with one installment in July and the other in
January.
The Rotary New Year is upon us and it seems appropriate that my first
message be on the topic of what is changing within the world of Rotary International:
On 1 July, new leaders will take office at the club, district, and international levels.
Carl Kruse takes the helm as our District Governor. He is the past president of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club and has served District 5340 as an Assistant Governor, District Membership Chair and Chief of Staff for Governor Dave Breeding. Carl is a veteran of the US Army, an Eagle Scout, former Mayor and Councilman of the City of Poway and he has been an Olympic torchbearer for three Olympics -
1984, 1996 and 2002.
Ron D. Burton, of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA, will become Rotary’s 103rd president and will encourage Rotarians to Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Read a profile of Burton from The Rotarian and download his convention speech.
Anne L. Matthews, a member of the Rotary Club of Columbia East, South Carolina, USA, will become the first woman to serve as vice president. Matthews, a former director of South Carolina’s Department of Education, is president of Matthews and Associates, an educational consulting firm. Read her biography.
Dong Kurn Lee, of the Rotary Club of Seoul Hangang, Korea, will take over as Rotary Foundation trustee chair. Read his biography and download his convention speech.

President’s Message Declaration of Rotarians
in Businesses and
Professions
As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I will: 1. Exemplify the core value of
integrity in all behaviors and activities.
2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve Rotary.
3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical
standards as an example to others.
4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as
fellow human beings.
5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society.
6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for
young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community.
7. Honor the trust that Rotary
and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians.
8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

Other changes for 2013-14:
Rotarians will be allowed to form satellite clubs, whose members meet at a different time and location from their parent clubs. The change, approved by the Council on Legislation in April, is intended to make it easier for members to develop the core for a new club.
Districts will be able to form an unlimited number of e-clubs. The Council removed a limit of two e-clubs per district. The change is designed to bring in new members and appeal to young professionals, who may be less able to meet in person weekly.
The name of Rotary’s fifth Avenue of Service will change from “New Generations Service” to “Youth Service.” This change was also approved by the Council. In 2010, this avenue of service joined Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service.
The dues Rotary clubs pay Rotary International will increase US$1 to $53 per member.
A redesigned Rotary website will be launched in late summer.
The RI Board of Directors will seat nine new directors 1 July, along
with 2013-14 President-elect Gary C.K. Huang, of the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan. The new directors for 2013-14 are Celia Elena Cruz de Giay, of the Rotary Club of Arrecifes, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mary Beth Growney Selene, of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton, Wisconsin, USA; Seiji Kita, of the Rotary Club of Urawa East, Saitama, Japan; Holger Knaack, of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany; Larry A. Lunsford, of the Rotary Club of
Kansas City-Plaza, Missouri, USA; P.T. Prabhakar, of the Rotary Club of Madras Central, Tamil Nadu, India; Sangkoo Yun, of the Rotary Club of Sae Hanyang, Seoul, Korea; Steven A. Snyder, of the Rotary Club of Auburn, California, USA; and Michael F. Webb, of the Rotary Club of Mendip, Somerset, England.
We know these directors will do an excellent job representing all the Rotary clubs worldwide. On behalf of our International and District leadership, I wish you all a Happy Rotary New Year!
