SEE YOU THERE

Hi Everyone,

I hope that you all had anexcellent November. The yearis nearly over. So many gamesare out there now, who willhave what in their Christmasstocking I wonder.

Blood Angels in 40k are finally released in a newcodex, and as my favourite ofthe 40k armies am excited tosee what they can have andwhat changes have been made

for the latest edition of thegame. They will be out thismonth in a box set with a slewof Tyranid miniatures, and amini rulebook.

We’re going back to basicswith our home gaming, having

finished our WFRP campaign, and getting ready to move oninto Path to Glory,Necromunda, and WarhammerQuest.

Dates for PentaCon will beout soon. As usual maximumplayers are 10, (which keepsthings nice and manageable). The mini tournament isdesigned around 5 games inone day. We try to simplify thegames so that they can beplayed in an hour. Allminiatures, games and rulesare provided on the day.

The survey published in lastissue of Snake Eyes is ongoingas I have received a few lateones so am leaving it open toentries until December 12,with the winner being

announced in January SnakeEyes.

Dog County Range Wars isnow into it’s 4th turn. TwoRanchers are dead, andalliances are being made inthis turn to stem the tide.Business’s will soon be up

for auction in Dogtown. Readmore in the Dogtown Howler.

The second part of the fanbased rules of Path to Gloryare in this issue, continued

from last month, for thosewho wanted to give this

great spin off game a go.Based on Chaos Warbandsin the realm of Warhmmer, itpresents a great skirmishgame, that allows you to cre-ate a warband and gain

favour points from yourchosen chaos god, whichthen allow you to gain more

followers and upgrades forthem as well as yourchampion. See page 16 formore details.

I would like to take thisopportunity to thank you fortaking the time to readSnake Eyes. May you andyour families and friendshave the best Merry Christ-mas and Happy and SafeNew Year.

WAR MACHINE

Warmachine is a steampunk-hemed tabletop miniature

wargame published by Privateerress. It is designed by Mat Wil-on and Jason Soles.

The first edition of Warmachinewas released in 2002. After re-easing numerous models andew model types Privateer Pressecided that the game was ineed of a rebalancing. So in010 after years of play testingnd a public field test they re-eased Warmachine Mk II.

Alongside Warmachine, PPPrivateer Press) has released

Hordes. A fantasy-themed tab-etop miniature wargame beingvariant of Warmachine.

he Game Warmachine is normally playedn a 6´x6´board. Two armiesach led by a warcaster fight to

win control of a portion of thatoard or to kill the opposing

warcaster. The warcaster is awarrior-sorcerer, who alongsideighting and spellcasting alsoas the ability to control 12 feetall steam-powered warjacks.

The warjacks have a basic pred-tory intelligence thanks to annvention called a cortex. Theortex allows the warcaster toee through the ‘jacks eyesuiding its attacks to hit oramage better. This is repre-ented by one of the central

mechanics of the game and it’salled boosting.

The army can also include unitsf infantry, cavalry, weaponrews and battle engines. Theyome in two flavors, units andolos. The warcaster, warjacks, nits, solos and battle enginesre all different model types.

REVIEWS ON THE RUN

Last issue I spoke about Cigar Box Gaming Mat.Last month I also acquired an Urban CombatF.A.T. Mat. Having enjoyed the use of both ofthese mats, I wanted to share these details withyou in this issues review on the run.

Star ng with the Cigar Box gaming mat. I select-ed the WW2 era countryside from a wide rangeof selec ons. The image is digitally printed onto aso blanket like material, which is then drapedover the table like a tablecloth. There is enoughof the mat to slightly overhang the sides. I am notsure that this was deliberate or not, but this doesallow the player to place small hills and pieces

under the mat, to create the image of raised ter-rain, without losing the e ect of the digital image.I purchased mine with the inten on of using it forBolt Ac on, however you can see in the photos itis set up for a fantasy game (Path to Glory).

The Urban Combat F.A.T. mat, is made from atype of neoprene (think thicker and more exiblemouse pad). It comes with its own carry bag. Thedigital image is very clear, and details are crisp. It’s size does not have the overhang, which I don’t

think would suit this material. I wanted the UrbanCombat mat for games of City ght and general40k, Bolt Ac on and with thoughts of an openZombie game. It doesn’t allow the placement ofhills under the surface as the fold is created rightacross the surface rather than just draping, butwho needs hills in the city?

To sum up, the Cigar Box gaming mat has moreexibility in gaming but the image of shrubs/trees

make me want to cover them with real model

trees. Both mats sell around the $110 range.

Your choice...expensive or inventiveP A G E 5I S S U E 1 4

would no doubt support me in

this, if you have one you have tohave more. Otherwise the collec-

on is incomplete. They havethen done their job...you’rehooked.

So your op ons are, you canbuy them new from the store ormail order. Or second hand fromEbay, and the various sites outthere. Either way it is going to

cost you, but it can be in uencedby you as to how much.

Ebay sellers for example dohave a contact email, so sendthem a message and see whatelse they might be lis ng in the

near future. They usually

don’t sell all in one go. If it isin your price range give theman o er for the lot. Use paypalto fund your purchase onEbay, or not for your own pro-tec on, and you’ll have someminiatures on the way. Mailorder stores some mes willo er a good discount, so theirworth checking out also, espe-

cially if you can buy in bulk.

Lastly are the cheap replicasof miniatures which I can saythat they are out there, andsome are okay, but you risk anincomplete model and some-

mes your money.

you want to eld. Filled withlots of colourful pictures, butmore importantly the cata-logue sec on towards the rearwhere you could see what wason o er (at the me). Theother source for collectors isthe four “Citadel MiniaturesCatalogues ”, tled Sec onOne through Four. Of course ifyou have kept your WhiteDwarfs from all those yearsago (like any good Archivist)there is another source. Thereare also online sources whichare dedicated to the miniaturecollector.

Where to nd your gures? That is hard for some easy forothers. If you live in the UK orUSA then availability and

a ordability are rela vely ac-commoda ng. If you live herein Australia, expect to paythrough the nose. Sadly ourhobby is now about makingmoney on an “investment”rather than a hobby for gam-ing. There are many onlinesources these days to chasedown a bargain. Many war-game communi es have theirown forums where people cansell their wares, facebook alsohas a growing number ofgroups that hock their wares, then of course there is thedreaded eBay where you willin all likelihood be eeced to

buy that overpriced model youwant.

If in doubt google it!

It appears a brave person isgoing to run an Old mersevent in 2015 for Warhammer40,000.... 2 nd Edi on! Word isit that while it will be a tourna-ment with someone coming

rst, this is not the majoraward. The word is (am I re-

pea ng myself) that the majoraward will be for having themost complete collec on of

gures from the 2 nd Edi on eraor earlier, which means RogueTrader era and the days ofchunky red. With this criteriabeing in the mix, people mightbe star ng to think of nding

gures from that era.

Best source to know what youare looking for would be theCodex relevant to the army

When it comes to war gaming,

you would realise by now that itcan be an expensive hobby. Thebiggest success that GamesWorkshop and miniature produc-ers like it have achieved, is sellingthe sizzle. You grab your copy ofthe latest White Dwarf and therein a superb paint job is a newminiature just released. If youplay the system, then chancesare you want this gure, even ifyou don’t collect that army. Why? They sold you the sizzle.Yes, it is accompanied with theba le report, and how manyenemies it and it’s rela ve armycan kill, and it is usually a wellmade model. As the collector

Banter you have just got to love, whether wri ng it or reading it. As some of you will know we have a wild west game runningthrough this magazine. Updates are on facebook (Dog County Range Wars and Dogtown group pages) if you care to have a look. Thegame is only three turns old but the banter has begun, some true and most not. The nature of banter I believe is to engage one or morepeople on a topic. Once you do that, try to out do their e orts and watch other join in. For me this has become some of my treasuredmemories and s ll building.

Photo’s are another thing that bring pleasure to the table in our Dog County we are trying to do as many as we can to support thegame. When the players make the e ort it a special treat for me. A lot will never post but like which is s ll suppor ng the game but I feelthey are missing out on so much more.

Stories about there characters and ranches are great way to build up bre of the game. Some has gone to great lengths to ll in theblanks of their family and origins. Again this isn’t for all but trust me its fun and sa sfying.

So I hope you can add to any game you are playing and do that li le extra. You reward will be enjoyment for you and your friends. Thanks for your ear.

This month saw the GGG members picking their gangs. There ares ll spots for those who are interested in playing. All you have to dois select a gang from one of the houses shown below. We will doour best to win for you and post the results of your gang.

Necromunda is played on a 4 x 4 foot table, with terrain repre-sen ng the underhive a a futuris c city in the galaxy of Warham-mer 40000.

Ini ally available will be the 6 houses; Goliath, Delaque, Esher,Cawdor, Orlock, and Van Saar, and the Outlaw gangs; Skavvy, Re-demp onists, Spyrers, Pit Slaves, Cul sts and Enforcers.

Current gangs and members are shown below. Pictures were tak-en for these games but I was unable to get them here for this issue, but I will give you a round up of the results of the rst games of thecampaign.

Flynn O’Donohue - Cawdor Henry Sco - Goliath

Darian Chase - Delaque

Nick Chase - Orlock

Zac Mehta - Escher

All gangs started with a basic setup. That is, 1 Leader, 1 Heavy, 4Gangers and 2 Juves, bought with 1000 creds. Nick’s gang had a bye

for the rst game set played. Flynn’s Cawdor (The Headhunters)went up against Henry’s Goliaths. (Rippers)

The Headhunters won the roll to start, and the Cawdor gang setout across the table to get some retribu on from the steroidpumped Rippers. Turn 2 was more about ge ng into posi on onthe table and se le in for some nice arcs of re. By turn 3, thingswere hea ng up, rst kill going to the Goliath heavy, taking down aHeadhunter Ganger. The Ripers also downed one of the CawdorJuves. The Headhunters had made some of their hits in turn 3, butfailed to wound. The Rippers achieved nothing.

In turn 4, the Cawdor luck turned the tables on the Goliaths, witha combina on of lucky dice or good shoo ng reduce the Rippersdown, forcing them to take their rst bo le test. The Goliathsrolled a 6 on 2 dice. The Rippers would stay and ght on.

(Necromunda losses of 25% or more result in the gang having totake a break test immediately, rolling under the leaders Ld or Lead-ership score on 2 dice. A er which that gang has to roll a break testat the start of every turn from then on. If they fail, they bo le othe table)

In turn 5, The Headhunters were down by 25% also, requiringboth gangs to roll for a bo le test at the start of their turn. TheCawdor gang rolled a double 2, well below his Boss’s leadership of

cromunda Campaign - SpireLord with GGG member Darian Chase

8. The Rippers Leader also passed his test.

In turn 6, The Headhunters gang started their turn by taking abo le test and passed once again. Gangers and Juves stayed ashidden as possible. The next dice roll could be bad for eitherplayer.

In the recovery phase, one of the Cawdor gangers went from

being down to a esh wound, allowing the Headhunters to beless than 25% losses. When the Goliaths had their next turnthough, the Rippers rolled their bo le test and lost, rolling 10.The Goliaths ran from the table, leaving Flynn’s Cawdor gang thewinner.

In the game between Zac’s Escher gang (The Ironskirts) and myDelaque gang, (Habtown Baldies), the game was as quick as Ihave ever seen a game of Necromunda played.

The Ironskirts won the rst turn a er set up, but kept move-ment to a minimum, choosing hiding and overwatch to let the

ght come to them. The Habtown Baldies had rolled Vents as

part of their ini al territory. This allowed them to get up into theheights of the buildings at the end of their rst turn. The targetsup high proved too much for the gangers in hiding and exposedthemselves as they tried to shoot at the Delaque gang. This thenle their posi ons exposed.

The Escher managed to wing a Habtown Baldies juve, who hadstrayed too close by running towards the ac on hoping no doubtto scrag some Escher, in their turn. In the return re, theDelaque heavy took full advantage of the Escher exposure as he

red into one group of closely huddled Eschers, and put two

down, and in the same turn the Habtown Baldies leader putdown an Ironskirts Juve.

The Ironskirts rolled their rst bo le test and the dice came upas a 9. The Esher gang le the territory, vowing revenge.

To play in this Necromunda Campaign just register your interestin an email to [email protected] and let us knowwhat gang you would be interested in. The top ve gangs will be

outed in Snake Eyes each month, but all players will know how

their gang is doing , with an email each month.

Fate Of A Nation Design Notes

The fate of a nation hangs in the balance. Israel cannotlose even a single battle. One defeat would mean thedestruction of the tiny Jewish state. Not waiting to beattacked by the Arab forces massing on its borders,Israel strikes first.

Hundreds of tanks sweep across the borders, punchingdeep into the enemy defences, seeking out the enemytanks. The infantry follow behind, assaulting the fortifi-cations, clearing the way for the advance to continue.

A bare six days later, the war was over. A thousandtanks lay strewn across the desert. Tens of thousandsof soldiers lay dead and wounded. Israel had survived, but the Arabs vowed that there would be no peace withIsrael.

he Extra Review by GGG Member Peter Toh

ee ngs Snake Eyes readers,

Halloween has just been and gone, and in the spirit (yes pun intended) of the holiday, some friends of mine organised a Halloween themedme night. Six a ended, which was a good number for the games we had in mind. So in commemora on of the event, I would like to give aiew of the games we played.

To start with we had to decide what we would play – we had several games to choose from. To start, we had decided we would play Zombie

uxx, and then we would have to decide between either Betrayal at House on the Hill, Elder Sign, or Witch of Salem.

the end the choice was... Betrayal at House on the Hill. (Witch of Salem had a maximum of 4 players, so it was out and Elder sign seemed atoo dgety with the components for some of the group).

Zombie Fluxx is one in a range of “Fluxx” card games. I was originally hesitant to purchase any of the Fluxxgames because I hadn’t heard anything about them. It was only because my wife found a Wizard of Oz themedversion that I tried it at all, and now we are hooked. We have Oz, Star, and Zombie Fluxx, and among our friendsthere is also Pirate, and Cthulhu (and another copy of Star). We s ll need to get Monty Python, Original, and EcoFluxxes.

Betrayal at House on the Hill, has been around for about 10 years (originally from Avalon Hill), and was revised

and re -released by Wizards of the Coast a few years ago. There are many reviews and videos etcetera on the webabout the game so I will try not to get too in -depth about gameplay and rules, but give you a quick rundown ofour games and the opinions formed.

mbie Fluxx:

llowing the success of our previous games of Fluxx we thought this would be a nice easy start to the gaming night, and a nice way to se leo the mood of the evening. Unfortunately, because of zombie theme of the game, it played very di erently to Oz or Star Fluxx. In the end theme was taking too long (and ge ng interrupted by Trick or Treater’s and dinner), that we ended the game prematurely.

trayal at House on the Hill:

er dinner we cracked open Betrayal at House on the Hill. One of the rst nice things about the game is that if at least one person has playedore, it is a really easy learning curve, and you can jump into the game with minimal e ort or setup hassles.

e second thing that really caught my a en on is the fact that at some point during the game the tables are turned and instead of a simpleplora on of a creepy house, it becomes a ight or ght for survival: “The Haunt” phase of the game. Also bear in mind that the longer theunt con nues, the harder it gets for the players ( Inves gators ) to survive.

for our rst game, when the tables turned, the en re house was taken by a giant Roc, so the 6 inves gators had to nd one of the two para-utes le in the house and escape... Yes this meant that 4 people were going to die (if not because they killed each other trying to get the par-

hute, then because the Roc took them back to the nest to feed them to the babies).

e to luck more than anything else, one inves gator found himself alone on a oor, next to a window and almost guaranteed to get a para-ute on his go (which was second a er it all went pear shaped) so it really became a ght for the remaining 5 inves gators to get the last re-ining parachute. Ul mately 2 of the remaining inves gators were shot by one of the other inves gators, and the last one got lucky and

oided the shot as they ran for the exit with the last parachute.

hat was great, let’s do that again”. This me the Haunt was a protec on duty style of game. One of the inves gators was revealed to be ther to the manor, and they would have to nd 2 ancient artefacts in the house (one of which was already possessed by the team), and thenke their way to the “throne” in one of the rooms. One of the other players turned “Traitor” whose goal it was to assassinate the

eir” (without knowing who the heir is) with the aid of some of their own assassins.

11

s one was quite a bit more fun and interes ng for all the players, as we knew we could have assassins jump out at any me, and we s ll hadnd the last artefact. Ul mately the good guys won, but it was close and enjoyed by everyone.

sing Thoughts

mbie Fluxx: This unfortunately is one of the longer and more complicated (rela vely) of the Fluxx tles, sos not great as an introduc on to the Fluxx game system – normal Fluxx games last 10 to 40 minutes, butgames of Zombie uxx clock 80+ minutes on average. Nevertheless, as a non thinking, fun sit down game

s good. Personally I nd it similar to Killer Bunnies in that the gameplay is simple and easy once you know

but the game can get bogged down if people take too much me and overthink their plays.

rayal at House on the Hill: This as already men oned is a fun, easy and fast game, and more than that, it is “wife friendly” – you all knowat I’m talking about. The game has extremely good replay ability (50 base scenarios in the game, with addi onal ones available on -line), andyer variety is easy to maintain (12 di erent characters to choose from). De nitely I would recommend this one.

te: I have been told that Betrayal and Witch of Salem are currently out of print and quite hard to nd, but I did see a copy of Betrayal in Comicrriors at Annerley the week a er Halloween.

The Dog County Range Wars players map, turn 3/4, allows players in the campaign to gauge their expansion in the new territory as well ashave a guess where their opponents might be. The colour coding shows where the real money is, in terms of land and income. Lush Landshat are worked, (that is to say that a Ranch Hand is holding that land at the end of the turn), are worth $100 income to that Ranch.

Abundant Lands are worth $75, Grazing Lands are worth $50 and Arid Lands will produce $25 per month if worked. This informa on willallow players to plan their next expansion to create the most pro t, and to defend the more expensive property, avoiding the cheaperands. The black squares around the map represent Trading Posts, and the big one in the centre is where Dogtown is. The Red Stars are the

Ranches. The trees represent mbered hexes which when harvested will become grazing lands. Brown colours are mountain ranges whichike the rivers and trading posts, can be named as the players discover them. Silver can be found in the mountains, but it’s risky. You mightose that ranch hand. Red skull and bones show land clashes last turn where ba les have occurred. Players can now just send what num-

bered hex that their Ranch Hands will be going to and through. Go to Dogtown group on Facebook for the current map and more details.

Found a Model Railway store in the city and having a look at his wares, told the own-er that I would promote his items. I have found a lot of things that were easily con-verted to war gaming, available in a model railway store, as the hobbies have a lot incommon with each other. Train sets were an early hobby of mine, and if not for thelack of space, me and money required I would probably s ll be doing that as welltoday.

Hi to all.

I have always loved war movies, science fiction, and fantasy. Early in the eighties, Iwas living in Gladstone, in Queensland, and on the front page of the local paper was apicture of a Castle and showed 15mm figures in front of it. Two keen gamers hoveredover it.

Thus was my first contact with wargaming and can I say, love affair?

I have played all periods of history and Games Workshop fantasy and 40k. I havebeen involved with starting and running clubs as well as organizations, tournamentsand convention style weekends.

spent some time away from gaming for awhile with other interests but always waswatching from the background. These days I have gone back in time and am playing3rd edition Warhammer and collecting the old armies. I am working on having at least1500 points of all of the armies from back then, but some no doubt will be bigger as Iam a collector at heart.

Usually when I am interested in a game I will invest a lot of time (and money -Ed) into it. If it peaksmy interest I normally tell my gaming friends to have a look at it or will play games with them to garnerheir interest. I enjoy board games as well and have collected many over the years. Games such as

Arkham Horror and Fury of Dracula are some that I have played many times with groups of friends.

Currently I have taken up Warmachine and Hordes, and can't sing the praises high enough. Never inall my time gaming have I ever come across a game so intense. Definitely not for the weak hearted. Ifeel like a kid in a candy shop. Warmachine/Hordes has been running for about 10 years so I'm waybehind with lots to do.

Most of you would have seen my first week’s effort in Snake Eyes. Had just finished playingn Brissy Champs and came 28 out of 60 odd players.

Also, I have created a few games in which I was lucky enough to have players play. (OriginalDogtown and current Dog County Range Wars to name two -Ed)

Thanks for reading this far and i hope to see you across the table one day
