MUSICIANS IN THE SMUGTOWN STOMPERS. ( see small “italics” added to their “bios” by editor )

Bob Worden, banjo. Bob is the retired V.P. of business research at Eastman Kodak and currently a partner in Blue

Lake Associates marketing and strategy consulting group. His dad’s Dixieland records and banjo lessons (plus playing jobs) with Lloyd Hagadorn, a versatile vaudevillian, started Bob’s development of a strong rhythm banjo style and a keen knowledge of how “this old stuff” should sound. In his second quarter-century with the band, Bob resides with his wife Carol in Penn Yan. He was president of the Keuka Lake Association & Yates County Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Dariusz Terefenko, piano. Smugtown Stompers first met Dariusz in the late1990’s after he became interested in ragtime, and Prof.

Tony Caramia suggested he play with Smugtown Stompers. Dariusz is a tenured faculty member at the Eastman School of Music, where he began his career as a master’s student of jazz piano. After completing his M.M. in jazz piano performance (1998), he enrolled and finished a Ph.D. in music theory (2004) with a dissertation on Keith Jarrett’s Transformation of Standard Tunes. Terefenko has unique, joint teaching appointments in two departments: Jazz & Contemporary Media and Music Theory. His research explores the interaction between classical and jazz improvisation. Terefenko’s piano solo album, Evidence, offers his creative take on favorite jazz standards, jazz instrumentals, and own compositions. His latest duo project, Crossing Paths, features alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino. The album explores the potential of interac-tive improvisation using lesser-known standard tunes as well as 20

th century post tonal compositions. In 2014, Terefenko

published a book: Jazz Theory – From Basic to Advanced Study (Routledge), which has already been adopted as a re-quired textbook at prestigious music universities in the USA, Canada, & Europe.

Mark Bernard, trumpet. Mark is employed full time at Monroe County Water Authority & operates his farm in Williamson, first for vegeta-

bles & more recently for wine-grapes using varieties pioneered by Dr. Konstantin Frank. In 2015, the Young-Sommer-Winery’s Bernard-Vineyard-

Select Dry Riesling in New-York-Wine-&-Grape Foundation’s competition won “Best Limited Production Wine” award. Born in Buffalo, Mark soon moved to Rochester, NY, where he began his trumpet studies as a young boy. Early influences and later luminaries are many, but the jazz styles of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke continue to provide influence and inspiration. Mark also regularly researches the history of the Band's music.

Carol Mulligan, vocals. Carol sings folk, religious, Irish, pop, and now traditional jazz. In Pittsburgh she started

singing in church, and in Rochester she first joined a folk-singing group at Our Lady of Mercy church. The Stompers first knew her in Mulligan Stew, a group formed in 1975 and popular into the 1980s. She has a long-standing interest in Irish music starting with the trio Mulligan, Dolan, & Parnell and, since 1992, Carol has provided fine jazz vocals for many Stompers audiences.

Al Santillo, drums (& banjo). Al played banjo in both the Upstate String Band and the Stompers & is now the

sparkplug of the Stompers’ rhythm section. Retired from Kodak &also from his own remodeling business, Al’s early music training came from his father, Al Sr., who played tenor banjo on the Keith Vaudeville circuit & in several regional bands.

Dick Stacy, clarinet. Dick has been an immense help to the Smugtown Stompers in the past several years, bringing

his excellent musicianship to many of our jobs at town concerts, bar-rooms, & festivals. Dick received bachelors and masters degrees in music from the Ohio State University. He taught instrumental music in Medina, OH, for 12 years, and then became a high-school principal in Ohio, Illinois, & Rochester for the next 25. His leadership of the Penfield Pops band locally was exceptionally successful. Dick continues to play many musical jobs in the Rochester area, having com-pleted eighteen just this past December.

Bud Taylor, tuba. Retired Kodak inventor and co-developer of 3-D digital-image printing service widely used to-

day. Currently, an engineering consultant in patent searching and writing. After many years in marching bands, Bud joined the Stompers after hearing them at the Last Chance Saloon in downtown Rochester in 1963. He anchors the low-register with his 1912 tuba, combining early players styles with modern phrasing.

Dave Sturmer, trombone, leader. Dave’s high-school/college venues included a local, bi-monthly television

broadcast orchestra, a big “Stan-Kenton” style band, & leading a Dixieland band. With Ph.D. in hand, Dave balanced a research chemist’s career (Kodak) with occasional teaching (RIT) & trombone & music-transcription for the Stompers.
