The beginning of term saw our Multicultural Day celebrations as part of Education Week and what a day it was! Months of preparation all came together in a day that for those who attended they will never forget. We’ve also had excursions and incursions. Stage 3 spent three unforgettable days at Deer Park, while Stage 2 not only went tree planting at Horsley Park, but just last week utilised our video conference facilities in the connected classroom to experience a History incursion. More exciting activities are planned for Term 4. In sport, the athletics carnival was a resounding success while our PSSA teams performed well each Friday, showing sportsmanship and respect towards everyone through fair play. Term 3 saw our debating team make the final of the Parks Area Debating Competition, while all students have just finished presenting their speeches as part of our public speaking program. In the Premier’s Spelling Bee, four students from Stages 2 and 3 competed with distinction at the regional finals. We’ve had some amazing class performances at our fortnightly K-6 assemblies, while our dance group has been a delight to watch. It makes me very proud to see our great school continuing to offer such a well rounded education to all of our students. STAFFING NEWS Tomorrow will be Miss Fleming’s last day before she commences her maternity leave. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing both Miss Fleming and her husband all the best for the birth of their first child.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, As Term 3 draws to a close, I’d like to reflect on the enormous term we have had learning together and some of the activities that have taken place at Smithfield West Public School. The beginning of term saw our Multicultural Day celebrations as part of Education Week and what a day it was! PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION Throughout Term 3, teachers and students have been working hard preparing for the Public Speaking Competition. Students in all grades were involved in internal class competitions, where finalists were chosen for each stage. All the stage finals have now been completed and the winners represented Smithfield West at the Fairfield Network Public Speaking finals on Tuesday. A huge congratulations to all of our stage finalists, who presented an extremely high standard of speeches and well done to the competition winners, Yasmine Taha (Early Stage 1), Frans Esttaifan (Stage 1), Lachlan Carrick (Stage 2) and Hannah Wales (Stage 3). HEALTHY CANTEEN In Term 2 the school received notification that our canteen met the requirements of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. At our most recent K-6 assembly, Rebecca Rose our long standing canteen manager and I were thrilled to receive acknowledgement of this achievement from Lexi Stapleton of South Western Sydney Local Health District. REGIONAL ATHLETICS Congratulations to our seven students who represented both Smithfield West and Horsley Zone at the recent Sydney South West Athletics Championships at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. Zayne Honeysett, Sharon Latapu, Orlando Pau, Fadya Al-Kes Hirmiz, Lizzy Mafi, Phoebe Barrass and Mele Kailea all did our school proud in displaying great effort and sportsmanship. Special congratulations to Orlando on throwing a mighty 9.40m in the Under 11 Year Boys Shot Put to finish 3rd and qualify for the state championships in November. NAPLAN NAPLAN results for students in Year 3 and Year 5 who sat the test in Term 2 were sent home last week. It is important to remember when reading the results that NAPLAN measures some aspects of student learning in literacy and numeracy. It is also fair to say that since May, many things would have changed. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher should you have any questions. HOLIDAYS As we approach the school holidays, I would like to thank the parents, staff and students for a productive term. I very much appreciate the community’s ongoing support. Tomorrow, September 27, is the final day for Term 3 and being a regular school day, it is expected that all students will be in attendance. School resumes for all students on Monday, October 14. Have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday. I look forward to working with you all again next term. SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL 2020 Is your child currently in Year 5 and are you considering Year 7 placement in a selective high school in 2021? If so, now is the time to get the process started as applications open on Tuesday,8 October 2019 and must be submitted online by Monday, 11 November, 2019. Selective high schools cater for the specific needs of high achieving gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Selective schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. To be considered for placement, students must sit the Selective High School Placement Test. Parents must apply online at the following link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. All applicants are required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test on Thursday, 12 March, 2020. If you would like a copy of the booklet: Information about applying for Year 7 entry to selective high school in 2021 please contact me. Stephen Gray Principal

TELL THEM FROM ME PARENTS SURVEY This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between until 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. To access the survey for our school go to: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/swps The survey is available in 23 languages. B. Wilson

Uniforms will be available for purchase on: Wednesdays and Thursdays

8.30am-9.30am and 2.30pm-3.00pm Please see staff in the Administration Office

Learning about Captain James Cook with the Botany Bay Environmental Educational Centre.

On Monday 16 September, Stage 2 used our video conference room to connect to the Botany Bay Environmental Educational Centre. They learnt about the
