We’ve been back for nearly a fortnight now and things are getting back to normal. I’ve been in every class and have been impressed with how hard all the students are working. I have been particularly pleased with our Kindergarten students. It has been a tough start to their school careers, but after some initial apprehension when we came back five days a week, it’s now smiles all round! MORNING DROP OFF/AFTERNOON PICK UP Thank you for your patience and understanding with our new morning drop off and afternoon dismissal procedures. Ensuring the safety of our 330 students as they arrive, then later leave, is our main priority and takes a huge effort on behalf of the whole community. The morning drop off has been very good, no doubt helped by the naturally staggered arrival of our students. The afternoons too, after a few early hiccups, seem to be working well. A couple of friendly reminders: while every attempt is being made to give parents the opportunities to socially distance, ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure that this occurs. road rules around the school still apply. That means Bus Zones and No Stopping Zones are not to be used for parking or as a Drop and Kiss Zone. I would also discourage the practise of performing a U-turn across double lines. I have been informed that council rangers will be patrolling school zones over the next few days and if necessary will be issuing fines. The expectation is that all students will be collected by a parent/carer by 3:00pm. If for any reason this is not possible, please contact the office and advise of the alternative arrangements. Students not picked up by bell time will be taken by staff to the office to wait for their parent/carer. SCHOOL GATES Until further notice, both the Charles St and Gemoore St gates will be locked between 9:00am and 2:45pm each day. Students arriving late and essential visitors must access the school during these times via the pedestrian gate on Wetherill St and report immediately to the front office upon arrival.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS Semester 1 reports will be sent home with every child on Thursday 2 July. For this semester only, it will be a simplified version of the report you normally receive. It will focus on the learning that has taken place so far this year. It will include student’s progress and achievements, as well as areas for development. The grading of students using the five point A-E scale will not feature in this report. PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Unfortunately, at this point of time we are not permitted to organise face to face parent/teacher interviews, except in exceptional circumstances. If you would like to speak to your child’s class teacher, please contact the school so that a phone interview can be arranged. OPPORTUNITY CLASS PLACEMENT 2021 Online applications for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2021 open on Tuesday 9 June 2020. Parents of Year 4 students considering the opportunity class option for next year must first complete the Intention to apply letter which has been sent home with every Year 4 student and return it to myself. Further information and the online application can be accessed at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 Applications close on Friday 26 June 2020. Opportunity classes cater for gifted and talented students in Years 5 and 6. The nearest classes to our school are located at Smithfield Public School, St Johns Park Public School and Harrington Street Public School. To gain entry, students who apply must sit a placement test on Wednesday 16 September 2020. This is usually a very difficult test and parents will need to carefully consider if it is suitable for their child. If you would like further information, please contact me through the school office. 2019 ANNUAL REPORT The 2019 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the activities, programs and achievements at Smithfield West last year and is now available on the school website.

[email protected] If you would like to discuss any aspect of this report or do not have access to the internet and would like a copy, please do not hesitate to contact me. PUBLIC HOLIDAY A reminder to all families that Monday 8 June is the Queen’s Birthday public holiday and there is no school. Have a wonderful long weekend spending time with your family and friends. School resumes for Week 7 on Tuesday June 9. SCHOOL SCARVES I have noticed that coloured scarves are beginning to appear in our playground as the mornings become cooler. Did you know that we have our own green scarf? Priced at a very reasonable $7.00 it is available through the school uniform shop. If you would like to purchase one please contact the school office. Stephen Gray Principal KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS 2021 It has come to that time of the year again where we are enrolling students for Kindergarten 2021. This year our school has registered once again to participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport and physical activity to lead a healthy lifestyle. Over a ten week period, we will be monitoring physical activity levels during class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport lessons. Physical activity outside school hours will also count towards the challenge award. The aim is to work towards an average at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day for 10 weeks. Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also helps young people to develop communication skills, confidence and resilience. We would like to invite families to support us in encouraging students’ healthy use of leisure time and to experience the joy of being active together. If you have any further questions about the challenge, please contact Miss Novak who will be pleased to talk with you. M. Novak Organiser
