A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOROver the last 10 years SCL has maintained a constant vision. We want to be:

‘The Best Provider of Affordable Leisure and Event Venues’

In 2010 I believe we have achieved this in the context of Slough and would argue strongly for this position in the Thames Valley. This aspiration has required a continual focus on enhancing the environment within our Centre’s, improving the quality of service for our customers and improving the skills of our people.

We have served over eight million customers since 2000 most of who either live or work in Slough. I believe this has not only created a stronger, fitter and healthier local community but has also helped provide a fun place to live.

I would like to thank all of those who have worked with us and for us in the last ten years for their support and efforts. I hope the story you find within these pages will remind all those who have a real stake in our business of the changes that have occurred in the last decade and also a flavour of the years to come.

Let’s look at the social benefit we provide:

Free Swimming Since Montem and Langley Leisure Centre introduced the free swimming program in 2009 over 3,000 people a month use our pools for free. Over 60% of these are children under 17 years of age.

Berkshire Healthy HeartsThe Healthy Hearts program has been run in partnership with East Berkshire PCT for three years. They have assisted hundreds of people in the area to improve their lifestyles reducing the risk of heart disease.

Youth Engagement Social networking has been a great way to communicate with young people, through popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Absolute Ice has recently been offering sessions on a Saturday night run in conjunction with Slough Borough Council and Thames Valley Police.

Activities for Special PeopleSPICE (Special People on Ice) is a voluntary organisation who aims to teach young people who have a mixture of learning disabilities to skate. SPICE was formed in 2007, and currently has over 40 members, who weekly are taught to skate and play ice hockey.

Ladies and Men only SwimmingTo meet the needs of our local community thriving single sex swimming sessions run at Montem and Langley pools.

Fitness for Kids Since 2007 we have offered specific memberships for young people. We offer special fitness sessions, use of our Synergy Gym and also swimming.

SLOUGH COMMUNITY LEISURE IS A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Disability sessions also run at Montem Leisure Centre on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays and our adapted karts at Absolute Karting provide for a range of disabled people to go karting.

Our commercial success has been based upon:

Synergy Health and FitnessOur four Synergy Gyms and the associated fitness classes, swimming pools and spa have been the backbone of the company’s financial success throughout the last ten years. Over 6,000 people commit themselves to regular payments to use our facilities and as a result we have been able to reinvest in improving our services.

Spirit VenuesOur Spirit Brand was launched in 2005 in order to promotethe events, meetings and conference facilities availableat The Centre and Thames Valley Athletics Centre. Withover 80 weddings each year, regular exhibitions andconferences coupled with small meetings, this is a vibrantand important part of our business.

Absolutely LeisureOur latest venture Absolutely Leisure promotes all our entertainment products. The Slough Ice Arena and our indoor karting centre will be joined in the autumn by Slough’s own 18 lane tenpin bowling facility. These centres are key to making Slough a fun place to live and work and help fund the social benefits our business delivers.

Best PracticeQuest is a quality assessment designed by Sport England for the management of leisure facilities. Quest defines industry standards and good practice and encourages our ongoing development and the delivery of a customer focused service. The average score for our Centres was 70% in 2003 we have developed our business to achieve 81% in 2009.

Skilled PeopleSlough Community Leisure has always been committed in the training and development of our people. In July 2009 we achieved the Investors in People award which not only rubber stamped our approach to people management but has also provided extra focus for our development of staff within our organisation.

Everyone’s SafetyOur approach to safety is measured independently every year using the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents auditing scheme. We have recognised that as a provider of leisure services we have a moral duty to look after the safety of our customers and our people. Since 2002 our safety score has risen from 56% to 81% in 2010 using the ROSPA scheme.

Good ValueTo prove we are providing good value to the local community we have been measured using Sport England’s National Benchmarking Scheme. When measured against similar facilities in similar communities we came out on top for providing value for money.

Jen BlackburnThe most exciting part of the last 10 years is having control over our own destiny. We’ve grown from 5 to 9 sites, each day is different, colleagues and customers are great there’s always a new challenge.

Julie Watson10 years ago I was ‘Coaching Co-ordinator’ organising coaches teaching aerobics and swimming. Today I’m SCL’s Sales Centre Manager organising the selling of Karting, Gym Memberships and Birthday Parties. I have a great team; my role is challenging but fun.

Brian DoeI started with SCL as a lifeguard at Langley Leisure Centre. Over the last 10 years I’ve been on many internal and external training courses that are available to all staff. I’ve had many promotions and today I’m the Maintenance Manager solving problems and ensuring our customers get access to our facilities. I look forward to work in the mornings.

David BrindI also started work as a lifeguard and in the last 10 years have worked in many of ourCentre’s. It’s been an incredibly enjoyable place to work and the opportunities I’ve hadhave allowed me to shape a career in Slough. Today I’m the Group Manager for theAbsolute Brand. Here’s to the next 10 years.

Victoria MooreIn 2000 I was a lifeguard and swimming teacher. Today I run the swimming course programme for SCL and train and assess lifeguards. I’ve worked in great teams, with dedicated colleagues who are both fun and supportive.

Anil KumarAs a 16 year old I worked part time at the Ice Arena. Since then I’ve been a Team Leader and Duty Manager and now I’m the General Manager of the site. I’ve been given the opportunity to put my own ideas into practice and I’m proud of what’s been achieved.

Christine Strugnell During my time with SCL I have been given some fantastic opportunities to develop mycareer. My first role with SCL was as the Manager for Leisure Link. I moved into the newly formed Commercial Development team in 2004, I then managed TVAC for a short while before being promoted to the role of General Manager at The Centre in March 2006. In March 2009 I became Group Manager for the Spirit Group.
