ORCHESTRA BAOBAB

One of Africa's great iconic bands, creators of one of the world's most sublime and trulydistinctive rock sounds. Founded in 1970, Orchestra Baobab fused Afro-Cuban rhythmand Portuguese Creole melody with Congolese rumba, High Life and a whole gamut oflocal styles - kickstarting a musical renaissance in their native Senegal, which turned thecapital Dakar into one of the world's most vibrant musical cities. They produced more hitsin less than a decade than other bands in a lifetime.

Echoing his part in the careers of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club, Nick Gold lured thebands original members back to the studio to record Specialist in All Styles, a criticallygarlanded gem that captured Baobab at their relaxed, grooving best. They won BBCWorld Music Album of the Year, gained a Grammy nomination, and were the subjects ofTV special. Their most recent album 'Made in Dakar' presents a string of beautifully craft-ed new songs alongside reworked gems from their 20 album discography.

The Baobab is a strong tree. Even if youcut it down, it will keep on growing. So when you speak of OrchestraBaobab, you know that they willgather again around the baobabtree to make music that liftsthe soul.

“Orchestra Baobab make music that lifts the soul.” New York Times“Blending the Afro-Cuban and pan-African sounds …with a more modern urban

feel, this is pure class.” Daily Telegraph“they've reclaimed their place as pioneers of African pop.” Guardian“confirms their status as the jewel in the crown of African pop.” Daily Mirror

In a manner befitting their name (Irish for “light”), Solas burst onto the Irish music scene andalmost instantly became a beacon – an incandescent ensemble that found contemporaryrelevance in timeless traditions without ever stooping to crossover clichés. Via spectacularmusicianship, riveting band empathy, and a bold willingness to extend the boundaries oftheir sound, Solas cleared a path for traditional music in the new millennium.

The Boston Herald trumpeted Solas as "the first truly great Irish band to arise fromAmerica," Since then, the praise has only grown louder. The Philadelphia Inquirer said theymake "mind-blowing Irish folk music, maybe the world's best." The New York Times praisedtheir "unbridled vitality", the Washington Post dubbed them one of the "world's finestCeltic-folk ensembles"The Irish Times summed it up; "Solas relish ... influences from zydeco to klezmer, jazz andbluegrass that bathed the likes of Michael Coleman and James Morrison before them."

The Solas sound today is anchored by founders Seamus Egan, who plays flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar and bodhran, and fiddler Winifred Horan. They are two of the mostrespected-and imitated-musicians anywhere in acoustic music. Mick McAuley plays accor-dion and concertina; Eamon McElholm plays guitar and keyboards and singer MaireadPhelan from Kilkenny joined them this year. Four of the five band members compose music.

SOLAS

Solas are special guests with Orchestra Baobab in what promises to be afeast of exciting and vibrant music on Sunday night October 26th in the

Radisson SAS at 8.30pm.

SLY & ROBBIE with the TAXI GANG and CHERINE ANDERSONSly & Robbie are one of reggae's most prolific and long lasting production teams. Theirsis the ultimate musical marriage, a partnership that, once formed, re-etched the very land-scape of not just Jamaican music, but the entire world's. Such hype is oftentimes rolledout, but in the case of drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare, it really wasan earth-shattering union. Their rhythms have been the driving force behind innumerablesongs. As a production team, the pair has been the equivalent of a creative storm, thecutting edge of modern dub, ragga, and dancehall. Sly & Robbie weren't content to mere-ly produce other artist's work, however, and the pair continued their outside sessionwork. “the Riddim Twins”, as they were now being called, were providing the pulsingrhythms for albums from such legendary vocalists as Bunny Wailer, Toots, Marcia Griffith,Black Uhuru the Mighty Diamonds, Jacob Miller, and myriad of DJ stars including GeneralEcho, Ranking Dread, and Barrington Levy.

The duo has employed theirtalents with such unlikelyartists as Joe Cocker andJoan Armatrading, Ian Duryand Bob Dylan, GraceJones, Robert Palmer,Queen Latifah, the RollingStones, No Doubt, UB40and Herbie Hancock. Thebreadth of their productionsand playing seeminglyknows no boundaries.

In Sligo Live they performwith the cream of Jamaicanmusicians from their Taxirecord label includingCherine Anderson, one ofJamaica’s rising talents.

Radisson SAS Friday 24th 8.30pm Double bill with Cathy Davey €31.80

The Irish singer, songwriter of the moment, played thebiggest gig of her career recently with a sold out showat Dublin's Olympia and has sold out 35 shows in arow this year. 2008 has been already an amazing yearfor Cathy, she collected the Meteor award as "BestIrish Female" and her second album "Tales OfSilversleeve" continues to sell by the bucket load.

"A spikier alternative to many of the female singer-songwriters in the UK and Ireland at present, Cathyearned her indie credentials working with Elbow andtouring with Graham Coxon. Her two albums show heras one of Europe's rising music talents."

Jim Carroll of the Irish Times wrote,"Tales ofSilversleeve' may well be the most spectacularly beau-tiful Irish album you'll hear this year. It has songsgalore, but it also has these glorious sounds and flightsof imagination where Davey aims for the sky and actu-ally gets there. She's trying things out, having a go atnew ideas and sounding as if she's having a whale of atime. Every time I hear the album, I find something newon it to think about."

The album not only confirms Cathy's outstanding song-writing talent, but also bears witness to her consider-able musical evolution in the space of just three shortyears.

CHAMPIONS OF THE NORTH .......Musical Magic From Manchester

DEZI DONNELLY fiddleMICHAEL McGOLDRICKflute, tinwhistle, bodhran

In recent years, fiddle player Dezi Donnellyhas made a name for himself as one of thebrilliant musicians to come out of theManchester Irish scene. His aggressive,Sean-McGuire-tinged fiddle playing has beenfeatured in many recordings including duetsand ensemble with flute player extraordinaireMichael McGoldrick both of whom won All-Ireland duet competitions as teenagers.Donnelly's style has antecedents in the fami-ly. His uncle was the legendary Des Donnelly, also a fiddle player of uncommon abilities, who died tragically young in a constructionsite accident. In his recordings Dezi playswith zest and brilliance, but also withsupreme finesse and subtlety. He is a masterof great touch and sense for variation.

Also from Manchester and of Irish parents, Michael McGoldrick was encouraged by thethriving traditional Irish music scene in the city and by the age of 15, he had already wonnumerous All-Ireland Championships after swapping bodhran to play flute and whistles. Hewon Musician of the Year - 2006 BBC Folk Awards. His album "Fused" is a masterpiece, mixing traditional with trance and fusion. Regarded as one of the greatest flute players of all time, he is in constant demand andhas collaborated with the likes of Jim Kerr, Youssou N'Dour and john Cale as well as found-ing Toss the Feathers and Flook.

Liz and John's first recording ‘In Play’ documents the fiery musicianship Liz and John havehoned in live concerts over the last several years. A partnership regularly honoured as thebest in Irish music.

Since she was 18, when she astounded the Traditional music world by winning the SeniorAll-Ireland Championship, Liz and her fiddle have been amazing audiences around theglobe. Her recordings and appearances on concert stages, television and radio, haveestablished Liz as one of traditional music's most sought after performers. "lost in theloop," released in 2000, won Liz new fans around the world, as it garnered an Indie Awardand Liz being named Traditional Performer of the Year for 2000.

Impossibly in demand in the studio and on the road, immensely talented and blessed withan acute ear, a wicked sense of rhythm and a seemingly endless bag of tricks in playing, composing, performing and producing, John Doyle is a musician of immense reputation.

He is a founding member of Solas. Since leaving them John has been solidly establishinghimself as one of the most versatile, creative and prolific voices in folk and traditionalmusic.

Described by The Irish Times as 'a heart on the sleeve songwriter who sings about the upsand downs of life and love', Tom Baxter's intense performances and powerful writing haswon him a faithful following of captivated fans. Not one to hide his feelings away, he writeslyrics so emotionally raw you can see the blood in them. His 2004 debut, Feather andStone was a success largely due to his irresistible live shows in which he generates a gen-uine rapport with his audience.

His second album, Skybound, is a collection of powerful tracks with themes of love, pas-sion and redemption throughout and in tracks such as the memorable 'Better', 'Tell HerToday' and the overpowering 'Half A Man.'. Last time he played in Ireland he was pro-posed to and his performance at Sligo Live will no doubt win him many more admirers. Hisband, which includes his sister, Vashti Anna on backing vocals, rock with a mash of chill outsoul and Latin sounds which lift Baxter way above the morass of singer-songwriters.

Le VENT du NORD

Festival Club at The Clarence Saturday 25th October 11.00pm followed by dance mixes €15.00

Famed for their rip roaring rhythms and dancing, Canadiansuperstars, Le Vent du Nord could be described as more ofa whirlwind than a North Wind. Since it they formed in 2002,Le Vent du Nord has exploded onto the folk music scene. The group's first recording, Maudite moisson!, was awardedthe Juno for traditional album of the year in 2004. Their sec-ond album, Les amants du Saint-Laurent, was chosen albumof the year at the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Awards. It wasalso that year the group was rewarded as North Americantraditional artist of the year.

The band performs lively traditional Quebecois music (whichis heavily influenced by Celtic music from both Ireland andBrittany) which is almost impossible to resist dancing to. Thegroup consists of R.jean Brunet (vocals, accordion), SimonBeaudry (vocals, guitar), Olivier Demers (vocals, fiddle, foot-tapping), and Nicolas Boulerice (vocals, hurdy gurdy, piano-accordion, piano).

FREDFred are a five piece from Cork City, Ireland whotake the anguish, angst and pain out of Rock'n'roll, opting instead to just be really good. Some journal-ists interpret this as 'quirky', but Fred's achieve-ments both live and in their recorded output far exceed any 'quirky' flash in the pan.

"Like Sly & The Family Stone in a swordfight with the Flaming Lips, refereed by BrianWilson" is how The Irish Times described Fred. The band independently released theircurrent album ‘Making Music So You Don't Have To’ to a sold out Opera House two yearsago. With the release of their latest single "Running " they have done it again. The bandstaged "FRED FEST" to capacity crowds in Cork, gaining huge support from both nation-al radio and international radio stations. Over the past couple of years Fred have beenbuilding a solid fan base in the U.S. and particularly in Canada, where they are in hugedemand. Fred's fan base both at home and abroad has grown at a rapid pace, with theband enlisting droves in the Fred army everywhere they go. One of the hits of this year'sElectric picnic and bound for great things.
