TASAWWUR ISLAM



Among the most glaring weakness of Muslims being exposed to

contemporary “secular-materialist-liberal” post-modernist era is the

confusion in knowledge and loss of ADAB.

And the topic of ADAB is rarely emphasized today in Muslims’

education, whereas the Western, secular, atheistic, materialistic, profit-

driven motivational model are seen as the norm, etc. the impact upon

human loosing their primordial identity (what as Muslims we understand

as FITwRAH) is indeed critically grave.

Even if Muslims recognize this, their vague understanding of what ADAB

means and entail, need to be corrected.


“ …. it is very much related to the Islamic concept of Education - for

ADAB is recognition and acknowledgement of the Reality, and knowing

of one’s place in the order of things; capable of putting the right thing

in their rightful place, in their rightful manner; rendering just due to

whomsoever has the right, and in our acquisition of rightful things to

be in accordance with the right proportion and under the right

circumstance …. It is very closely related to the Islamic concept of

al-’Adl (the justice)*, the upholding of which leads to TAQWA (the

consciousness of Allah)”

you and the sky a canopy, and has sent down water

from the sky and thereby brought forth fruits for your

sustenance: do not, then, claim that there is any power

that could rival Allah, when you know [that He is One].”

Mankind’s existence is not accidental as though without purpose,

but humans by nature are capable of knowing meanings and purpose to

his life and his special place in nature.

Unlike animals, man’s reasoning faculty is summoned to reflect upon

the higher philosophical questions as to the meaning and purpose of life

which leads to the cognition of the existence of the Divine.

There is already and innate predisposition in him towards wanting to

serve (worship) someone or something.

Imam ‘Ali bin Abi Tolib r.a. said:Imam ‘Ali bin Abi Tolib r.a. said:


Those who claimed to be “atheists” even are in reality serving or

worshipping their own Selves (their desires).

““Have you seen Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desirehe who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah , and Allah

[This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection,

"Indeed, we were of this unaware." "Indeed, we were of this unaware."

Mankind is called Mankind is called ( (insaaninsaan) – a word whose roots is ) – a word whose roots is

similar with the word similar with the word ((nis-yaannis-yaan; ; nasiynasiy)) – –

meaning “forgetfulness; to forget”.meaning “forgetfulness; to forget”.

The ability to perceive the existence of a Supreme Being (God) is

innate in human nature ( Fitwrah), and it is this instinctive

cognition that explains why in every culture there is a term referring

to the Supernatural Divine - God.

In this verse we are told that, spiritually, our soul has already

testified to Allah’s Lordship prior to our physical sojourn on this

earth. Thus it is the Arabic term for “man” has that meaning “to

forget”, and messengers were sent but to be (MUDZAKKIR) the ones

to give “reminders” (DZIKR) to man, as well as the “Warner”

(NADZEERA) regarding the consequence for heedlessness of this

Thus Islam view humankind positively, free of blame or sins, left in

the care of parents. Each one of us are said to be upon the pure and

innocent nature of submission (“Islam”), but may be nurtured to

become otherwise.

Even if they veered into a deviant path, they still can or is expected

to continuously seek forgiveness and return to the path of Truth and

reformation (ISLAH).

Although human is not compelled because of his freewill, yet his

innate potentials are to be developed and actualised towards knowing

the truth. Those who are aware but reject truth is thus guilty of “KUFR”

“concealing; covering up; rejecting truth; or being

And those who know the Truth are to invite all with reasoning

and wisdom, appealing to their innate volition towards recognizing

the higher Reality and purpose, transcending this temporary

earthly existence. It is never hopeless.


““CONSIDER the flight of time! CONSIDER the flight of time! Verily, man is bound to Verily, man is bound to

lose himselflose himself unless he be of those who attain to faith, unless he be of those who attain to faith,

and do good works, and enjoin upon one another and do good works, and enjoin upon one another

the keeping to truth, and enjoin upon one another the keeping to truth, and enjoin upon one another

patience in adversity.”patience in adversity.”

((Qur’an: al-’Asr: 103: 1-3Qur’an: al-’Asr: 103: 1-3))

And those who know the Truth are to invite all with reasoning

and wisdom, appealing to their innate volition towards recognizing

the higher Reality and purpose, transcending this temporary

earthly existence. It is never hopeless.


Islam’s message is the message of Mercy and Allah’s

Forgiveness, and we must never despair in inviting all fellow man to

Allah’s way.

““CALL THOU (all mankind] unto thy Sustainer's path CALL THOU (all mankind] unto thy Sustainer's path with wisdom with wisdom

and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly and goodly exhortation, and argue with them in the most kindly

manner- for, behold, thy Sustainer knows best as to who strays from manner- for, behold, thy Sustainer knows best as to who strays from

His path, and best knows He as to who are the right-guided.”His path, and best knows He as to who are the right-guided.”

““No (don’t destroy them) ! But my hope is that Allah No (don’t destroy them) ! But my hope is that Allah

will bring forth from their descendents, people who will bring forth from their descendents, people who

worship Allah Alone, and do not set up partners worship Allah Alone, and do not set up partners

(i.e. commit shirk) to Him. ”(i.e. commit shirk) to Him. ”

Prophet Muhammad’s reaction to suggestion for him invoke destruction (as punishment ) upon his oppressors (Quraysh) :


When we enter into Islam, the “Shahaadahtain” constitute the

re-affirmation (reconnection) with our primordial (spiritual) bond

with our Creator Sustainer.

This bond is in-fact our “self-actualizing” which re-orientate and

align our aim and purpose of life upon a single TAUHEEDIC paradigm

: life of service and servitude to the One God through submission

and obedience, following His Last Messenger Muhammad s.a.a.w..


““And He is Allah; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due And He is Allah; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due

all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the

[final] decision, and to Him you will be returned.”[final] decision, and to Him you will be returned.”

Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w. taught this important DU’A :


‘‘O AllO Allaah, You are my Lord, none has the right h, You are my Lord, none has the right

to be worshipped except You, to be worshipped except You,

You created me and I am Your servant and I abide You created me and I am Your servant and I abide

to Your covenant and promise as best I can, to Your covenant and promise as best I can,

I seek refuge in You from the (consequence of the) evil of I seek refuge in You from the (consequence of the) evil of

which I have committed. which I have committed.

I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge Your favour upon me and

I acknowledge my sin, I acknowledge my sin,

so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.’so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.’
