“Being pious, kind, good, gentle, affectionate, beneficent, just,

righteous, virtuous, honest, true, veracious, sweet of speech,

merciful, sinless in performing something , pious”

Thus, it is “goodness attached to the doer inner state; belief ” It is the

category of goodness acknowledged by Islam as “righteousness

borne out of sincere or altruistic intention or inner volition upon

correct belief of Reality (HAQIQAT) ”. This is the definitive goodness

accepted by Allah which thus deserve eternal reward from Him.

“And cooperate in (AL-BIRR) righteousness and piety (AL-TAQWA), but do

not cooperate in sin (ITHMI) and aggression (‘UDWAAN). And (be conscious

of and) fear Allah (TAQWA); indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.”

(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 2)



And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents:

in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years

twain was his weaning: (hear the command) "Show gratitude

to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.”

(Qur’an: Luqman: 31: 14)


““But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me

that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them

“Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye

be (dutiful and) kind to parents. Whether one or both of them

attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor

repel them, but address them in terms of honour.”

(Qur’an: al-Isra: 17:23)


A man came to the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص seeking his permission to

participate in Jihad (battle in defence of Islam). He was asked: “Are

your parents alive?” He replied: “Yes!” The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص. said to him :

“Then go and be with them and Jihad (exert service towards them) .”

(Hadith reported by Bukhary and Muslim)


There came to Allah's Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص a person and said: ‘I give

my oath of allegiance to you for migration and Jihad seeking

reward only from Allah.’

He (the Holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ) said: ‘Is any one from amongst your

parents still living?’ He said: ‘Yes, of course, both are still living.’

He further asked: ‘Do you want to seek reward from Allah?’ He

said: ‘Yes.’

Thereupon Allah's Messenger ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Go back to your

parents and accord them benevolent treatment (companionship).’

“The best of the deeds or deed is the (observance of)

SWOLAH (prayer) at its proper time and (BIRR) kindness

to the parents (WAA-LIDAI-NI).”

“And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility

through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your

mercy as they did bring me up when I was young.''
