Gualala Arts Global Harmony Season of Offerings

The 2014 Global Harmony Season of Offerings culminates with a week-long festival on the Mendonoma coast with activities at Gualala Arts Center, Fort Ross and the Gualala Point Regional Park.

The scheduled events further strengthen the bond between the coast community and the Yakut people of the Sakha Republic in the Russian Federation, who first arrived as hired workers at Fort Ross and reconnected during the two-hundredth anniversary of the settlement in 2012.

On Wednesday, June 18, the festival begins at Gualala Arts Center with a reception and official opening of an exhibit with displays of Sakha costumes and other artifacts. It will feature the art of Andrey Chikachev, a well-known Sakha artist, whose work captures the daily life of the Yakut people. He has had exhibitions throughout Russia, as well as in Mongolia,

Poland and New York. Examples of his art can be seen at the Sakha Culture exhibit.

The same evening a performance art selection will showcase this intriguing culture. The Yakut people are the largest ethnic group in the Sakha Republic, a state with a population of almost a million people. It is located in eastern Siberia and spans three time zones.

The Yakut share a story remarkably similar to the local Pomo in California. The discovery of gold and the building of the Trans-Siberia Railway brought ever-increasing numbers of Russians to their isolated region. Persecution by the Soviet government in the 1920s reduced their numbers to one-half of the current population, but they now form the federation’s majority population and are experiencing a revival of their culture.

The festival continues through Sunday, June 22, with classes in jewelry, wood carving, and other Yakut crafts at Gualala Arts Center and at Fort Ross. Dinners at both venues will feature Sakha cuisine. Also, there will be talks on the role Yakut played at Fort Ross, on their spiritual beliefs, and the lifestyle and cultural revival of indigenous people.

On Sunday, the festival concludes with a sunrise greeting at Gualala Point Regional Park, including traditional rituals and dances. The kumis ritual involves food, which the Yakut believe must have a soul to be truly nourishing. After a breakfast, the program includes competition in wrestling and other traditional sports. The closing ceremony will take place at noon.

The 40-member delegation and other visitors from around the world will be hosted in various locations up and down the coast. Hank Birnham and Robin Joy Wellman from Fort Ross are coordinating the programs with Sue Bechtel, Caryl Hart, Sonoma County Parks and “Sus” Susalla, Gualala Arts Executive Director.

The 2014 Global Harmony Season of Offerings series includes seven performances from around the world, which showcase cultures spanning several centuries.

Gualala Arts Global Harmony Season of Offerings

The Sakha Cultural Festival begins with the opening of an exhibit with displays of Sakha costumes and other artifacts.

It features the art of Andrey Chikachev, a well-known Sakha artist, whose work captures the daily life of the Yakut people. He has had exhibitions throughout Russia, as well as in Mongolia, Poland and New York. The exhibit will open for viewing on Friday, June 6 with the official opening reception on Wednesday, June 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. That same evening a performance art selection will showcase this intriguing culture.

Andrey’s creativity permeates with love to Mother Nature and to the people of the North. As a little boy that grew up in a village, Andrey absorbed the beauty of the Yakut Nature, and the warmth and comfort of native people. His paintings always have a transition from the mythical world to the real world, like a bridge between the paradise of childhood and the world of adult’s reality.

An active participant of republican, regional, national and international exhibitions, Andrey has participated

in many notable exhibitions over the last several years. “Far East” (Khabarovsk, 1997 and 2003), All-Russia ( Moscow, 1998), the exhibition/contest “ArtSakha Modern” (2000 ), “Art Olonkholand” ( Moscow, 2002), “Contemporary Art of Yakutia” (St. Petersburg, 2005), “From Archaic to the Avant-Garde “ (Moscow, 2005), 9 International Creative Lab artists countries (2006), “From Olonkho to a New Reality: The Art of Yakutia” (Moscow, 2007), the traveling exhibition “Ulan Bator” (Mongolia, 2008), “Artnavigatsiya - Modern Graphics and Painting of the Sakha Artists “(Gdansk, Poland, 2009), “The Parallels: Poland - Yakutia” (Yakutsk, 2010), and “International Art-Expo” (New York, 2011).

The Sakha Cultural Festival is a week-long festival on the Mendonoma coast with activities at Gualala Arts Center, Fort Ross and Gualala Point Regional Park. The scheduled events further strengthen the bond between the coast community and the Yakut people of the Sakha Republic in the Russian Federation who first arrived as hired workers at Fort Ross and reconnected during the two-hundredth anniversary of the settlement in 2012. North Coast Artists Guild

The Discovery Gallery Preview Show for the Studio Discovery Tour opens Friday, June 27 with a gala opening reception Friday, June 27th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

2014 marks the 22nd Annual Studio Discovery Tour and the 3rd year of the Discovery Gallery Preview Show for the Tour. Come join the artists of North Coast Artists’ Guild’s (NCAG) Studio Discovery Tour as we celebrate opening night for our “pop up gallery” preview show. Although the “official” hours of the reception are 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. we will continue the party on into the evening with all the art lovers who can make it and want to stay later. All the artists on the Studio Discovery Tour this year will be there, as will examples of their work. There will be plenty of beer, wine, soft drinks and food too. Come have a glass of wine with us, meet the artists and figure out which studios to visit this year; and if you’re in the mood, get first crack at buying some unique art.

Studio Discovery Tour 2014 will take you from the south end of The Sea Ranch to Buckridge Road, north and east of Point Arena. Enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery that the Northern California coast has to offer while visiting the personal studios of the 27 NCAG member artists participating in the Tour this year, But, most of all, experience the art of many of the area’s most unique and talented artists!!!

The Studio Discovery Tour takes place Labor Day Weekend and the weekend before. That’s August 23-24 and the Labor Day weekend August 30-31, and September 1. Artist studios are open each day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This free, self-guided

tour along a 25-mile stretch of Highway 1, from The Sea Ranch to Point Arena, is the perfect way to spend a leisurely day or an entire weekend. The participating artists you meet along the way are happy to demonstrate the creation of their art and share their unique vision.

A free, full-color catalog will help you make the most of your tour. It contains a description of each artist, along with a detailed map and directions to each studio. While on the road, look for the bright yellow signs to help guide you along the way. Note that the catalog is a must when visiting artists on The Sea Ranch, since directional signs are not allowed along that section of Highway 1.

You can begin your adventure by stopping at the Discovery Gallery, 39140 So. Hwy 1, Gualala, CA, located in the Seacliff Center, above Trink’s Cafe, on the west side of Hwy 1 (elevator accessible), to preview the work of Studio Tour artists and to pick up catalogs with maps. Catalogs will also be available at the Gualala Arts Center, the Dolphin Gallery, the Mendocino Art Center, Elk Artists Collective, the Coast Highway Artist’s Collective and various local galleries and businesses, and local markets and inns along the way.

To receive your catalog by mail, so you can begin planning your own personal tour, e-mail the Tour Director, Doric Jemison-Ball at [email protected]. You can also download the Studio Tour catalog in pdf format at:

Art Off The Wall

For a memorable fun-packed event, circle June 28 on your activity calendar. That’s the date for the sixth annual Art (and more!) Off the Wall party.

There are two levels of tickets for the event. $30 pays for the reception, including food and beverages. The $70 ticket includes the reception, plus a guarantee that you will leave with an item worth at least $75, that you select when your number is drawn. Once all the numbers have been drawn, the remaining items will be sold for half the valued price, which stimulates a frenzy of buying!

When your number is randomly drawn you make your selection. The selection is not limited to artwork. That’s why (and more!) is part of the event title. Past valuable selections have included jewelry, hosted dinners, mushroom and wild flower walks, and much more. All items will be displayed the week before the event so participants can create a wish list beforehand. Then, cross your fingers and hope your number is drawn before someone else claims the coveted item. Of course, you can always make your own deals behind the scenes!

This year, starting in June, there will be a “Go Local Raffle” of unique local items and experiences that can only be found here on the Coast.

Donations: there is still time to make a donation of artwork or a fun event to Art (and more!) Off the Wall. Call Susan King at the Arts Center (707-884-1138) and make a verbal commitment before May 31. She will ask for your name, phone number, a brief description of the item and its value. Bring your donation to the Arts Center on June 1, between 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., along with a completed Donation Form.

If you have any questions about the event or the donation process, please contact Susan King at the Arts Center, 707-884-1138.

At the Gualala Arts Lecture Series talk on Thursday, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. Peggy Berryhill will discuss the history behind KGUA – 88.3 FM, the current programming and the future prospects for Gualala’s very own public broadcasting station. Berryhill is the station’s general manager and host of “Peggy’s Place,” the show that features interviews with local residents week days at 9:00 a.m.

KGUA is a public radio station that offers many popular nationally broadcast programs such as “Democracy Now,” “Living on Earth” and “The World,” but it is also part of the Native Media Resource Center (NMRC), an organization created to produce content about Native Americans and to promote cross-cultural understanding and racial harmony.

The scheduling includes programs on Native American issues and those of other minority groups such as Radio Bilingué, Latino USA, and the African American Consortium. Some different offerings not found on every public radio stations are “Q” with Jian Ghomeshi and “Undercurrents.” Besides “Peggy’s Place” the station features local programming such as the Willie B show and “Lizzard’s Lounge” with Liz Redford.

Berryhill, an award-winning radio producer who has been involved with public broadcasting for 40 years, founded the NMRC in 1997. When she began broadcasting in 1973 there were only two Native American public radio stations in the U.S.: KTDB in New Mexico first broadcast for a remote area of the Navajo reservation followed a few months later by KBRW in Barrow, Alaska. She is called the “First Lady of Native Radio.” Today there are 53 Native radio stations on the air, many of them encouraged by Berryhill.

A member of the Muscogee tribe, Berryhill will describe how the dream of a local station became a reality with the support of local businesses and labor to erect a broadcasting tower and create the studios in downtown Gualala. She will also discuss opportunities for volunteers to become involved with broadcasting and behind-the-scene jobs.

Besides the diversity of programs offered to educate, entertain, and inform listeners, KGUA provides a forum for any local resident to discuss public issues and to engage coastal residents in local affairs. More information and live streaming can be found on-line at www.kgua.org.

Anyone who lives within the sound of KGUA from Manchester to Stewart’s Point and from Boonville to boats off-shore will find this an interesting evening. There will be time for audience response once Berryhill concludes her remarks. A $5.00 admission will be collected at the door.

The Gualala Arts staff needs a little help now and again. To paraphrase the US Marines - we’re looking for “A Few Good Volunteers” who could serve as a “back-up the phones” crew. We need an hour or so coverage in the office, on a scheduled weekly basis, in order to break away to do some business as a team. We hope to gather a few folks who would be willing to help us out. Training will be provided. Give Susan a call on 884-1138 if you are interested in hearing more.

A Message from the Executive Director

David ‘Sus’ SusallaExecutive DirectorGualala Arts, Inc.

What a grand year it has been! I cannot believe how fast the year is flying by…it seems like just yesterday we were welcoming in the New Year. Together we have created a wonderful start to 2014 and we are just getting warmed up.

We are so honored and grateful to be hosting the people of Sakha to share their art & cultures with us this June. You never know where a conversation is going to end up…we are waiting with open arms for our travelers from afar bearing offerings to our community.

In July we have some traditional favorites: the Global Harmony Summer Adventure Camp, Auto Show, Summernationals Pinewood Derby, Chamber Music Weekend, and a new opportunity to learn how to sing harmony with a workshop and concert titled “A Concert Starring You!”

The 53rd annual Art in the Redwoods plans are coming along nicely this year, August 14-17, 2014. At the heart of the Festival is the fine art exhibit where we expect to have over 200 artists displaying over 300 pieces of art. We have 16 categories this year including a new “Emerging Artists Award” for best work by an artist under 18 years of age. Thanks to the generosity of our community we will be awarding $5,000 in prize monies. Applications are now available at Gualala Arts Center, Dolphin Gallery and online at GualalaArts.org. Deadline is July 21 for the first 420 entries.

We are very pleased to welcome back Rosemary Campiformio and the St. Orres family to head up our Top Hat Dinner! They very generously donated everything last year to make it a true fundraiser as well a magical jump-start to the Festival weekend.

Of course, team leaders are already lining up volunteers to assist our dozens of volunteer committees that make Art in the Redwoods run so smoothly. If you are looking to help out and join in on all the fun please contact one of the committee leaders or Sara King at [email protected] or call her 884-1138.

As usual we could not create such a remarkable season without our generous patrons, sponsors and attendees. We have a full list of sponsorship opportunities and Festival activities on our website if you are interested in sponsoring this great event. By attending events and dinners, donating cash, in-kind food & drink, housing and prize awards, and of course volunteer sweat equity we have created a Festival Season to be proud of!

Hope to see you at ALL of the Gualala Arts Festivals!!!

with sincere gratitude…

F-E-S-T-I-V-A-L Season is upon us!
