FOOD FOR EXHIBIT OPENING & COOKING WORKSHOP PROVIDED BY THESE FINE CHILEAN COMPANIES, IN ASSOCIATION WITH PROCHILE. THE GUALALA ARTS “ART EDIBLES” INTEREST GROUP WILL USE THESE DELICIOUS AND UNIQUE CHILEAN FOODS AND DRINK TO CREATE THE ARTISTIC APPETIZERS FOR THE EXHIBIT OPENING.

PABLO AND SOLEDAD WILL ALSO USE THEM FOR THE ART OF CHILEAN COOKING WORKSHOP.

The Gualala Arts Global H a r mony Ar t i s t s - i n -Residence program is thrilled to welcome Chilean

artists Pablo McClure and Soledad Leonicio for the month of June. These talented artists will be sharing their Chilean culture through their exhibition of Chilean Fine Art and by presenting workshops and special events. Their time here will showcase their Chilean heritage and artistic inspirations.

Soledad has chosen solitude, silence and the light of the Atacama Desert as the source of inspiration for her work. The material used for her sculptural work is based on recovered iron objects found in the field, the beaches and the desert.

For Pablo painting is a metaphor of the universe, always being present and renovating itself. To paint is the desire to see beyond the immediate limits, it is like presenting a fragment of sky and set new coordinates.

This series of events is sponsored by the White Mountain Institute, a not-for -pro f i t pr iv a te founda t ion supporting creative endeavors to bring together leaders in art and medicine.

A Season of Brubeck - “To Dave with Gratitude”

Brubeck Brothers Quartet

Saturday, June 13, 7:30 p.m. Gualala Arts Center

Coleman Auditorium Doors open 7 p.m. $28 advance, $5 more day of performance

For complete listing of all events visit WhaleAndJazzFestival.com

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet, aka BBQ, returns to the Gualala Arts Center at long last as an integral part of the 12th Annual Sonoma – Mendocino Coast Whale & Jazz Festival and A Season of Brubeck – “To Dave with Gratitude.” This dynamic performance will include a

special tribute to the brothers’ revered father, who passed on in 2012 at age 92. This concert is also part of the Global Harmony Series in recognition of the Brubeck family’s life long commitment to encouraging global harmony by sharing America’s amazing jazz culture through their music and humanitarian activities.

The Quartet is an exciting jazz group featuring two members of one of America’s most accomplished musical families, Dan Brubeck, drums, and Chris Brubeck, bass and trombone. Guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet.

BBQ has performed at concert series, colleges and jazz festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport, Detroit, Ravinia, Las Vegas, Sedona, Spokane & Monterey Jazz Festivals. Their hour-long concert at Sierra Nevada Brewery has been broadcast on the

nationally syndicated program: “Sierra Center Stage.” Their new Koch release “Classified” has already earned this rave review from All About Jazz: “Once again the BBQ attains that rarefied level where music is both relaxed and expressive, and their joy in its creation is contagious. There’s really nothing out there that comes close to their unique brand of inventiveness.”

These versatile musicians also collaborate with orchestras, and in 2006 ignited the Salt Lake City Jazz Festival by playing with the Utah Symphony, conducted by Keith Lockhart. With Chris Brubeck’s compositions as a vehicle, the BBQ has joined with chamber groups to collaborate with musicians from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Russian National Symphony Orchestra.

Although the quartet’s style is rooted in “straight-ahead” jazz, their concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music. The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz.

Festival Music Coordinator Fred Adler of KTDE 100.5 FM will emcee this stirring concert.

GLOBAL HARMONY SERIES NEEDS YOU!

As with all Gualala Arts programs and events, the Global Harmony Series cannot survive without the generous support of its donors, benefactors and volunteers. We need your help in supporting two upcoming events, Home Stays on July 19 and culinary help throughout the year.

The Gualala Arts interest group Art Edibles will be using the donated Chilean food and drink to prepare appropriate appetizers for the Chilean Fine Art exhibit opening on Friday, June 5 and could use some extra chefs, sous chefs, prep cooks or anyone with an interest in creating food art to help. They also need volunteers for the many other Gualala Arts events that include food, such as the Brubeck Brothers Quartet concert, Top Hat Dinner, exhibit openings, Gualala Arts Theater performances, etc. Please contact Laura Leigh at (707) 882-2983.

AND LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS

SOUTH AMERICAN ADVENTURE WITH NANCY AND NIK EPANCHIN

THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2015 AT 7 P.M. GUALALA ARTS CENTER COLEMAN AUDITORIUM

$5 AT THE DOOR

Nancy and Nik Epanchin will share tales and photos of their most recent South American adventure. Nancy and Nik are seasoned travelers. Nik has worked and traveled in over 70 countries and Nancy is not far behind. They have lived in France, South Africa, Gabon, Brazil and Argentina.

This adventure began in Cuzco, Peru where at 11,200 feet they acclimatized to the altitude. After several days, a predawn departure brought them to Piscacucho where at 8,440 feet they, their guide and an entourage of porters, began their hike on the Inca Trail. Four days later (the highest point crossed was Dead Woman's Pass at 13.800 feet) they passed through the Sun Gate, entrance to the world renown Inca site known as Machu Picchu, now a world heritage site.

Next they traveled to Quito, Ecuador, where they joined 13 other travelers, a guide and a naturalist and then flew to the Galápagos. In Baltra they boarded a 16-passenger ship, the Tip Top IV, and spent fifteen days sailing among and visiting 14 of the Galápagos Islands. Their days were spent hiking among giant tortoises, blue- and red footed boobies, frigate birds and land and marine iguanas, snorkeling with sea lions marine iguanas and sea turtles and viewing geological formations, wildlife and mangroves from pangas (a type of small boat).

The acclaimed Finnish choir Vox Aurea is coming to the Gualala Arts Center on Sunday, July 19. The choir is made up of around 35 singers, and we need to find places for ALL of them to stay for the night of July 19. People offering to provide home stays for the choir members would be asked to pick up and drop off their guests at the Gualala Arts Center. If you have a room or two, or even can offer up a whole house, please let us know. Call David “Sus” Susalla at (707) 884-1138 or send him an email at [email protected].

Jan Maria Chiappa

Ceramics, Jewelry & Mixed Media

Sharon Nickodem’s work is distinguished by the variety of ways in which she uses the images that she captures with her camera. Alternative ways to process her pictures such as digital infrared capture, mixed-media collage and the use of unusual substrates such as clay, canvas and fabric especially appeal to her.

Jan Maria Chiappa’s clay work blurs that often highly contested line between fine and functional art. The coast and its unique shapes and textures have informed her work. She creates pieces for the garden and home.

Art in the Redwoods

Fine Arts Exhibit Entry Form

June 2015 - Page 9

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS Each entry must be original: that is, one of a kind or

one of a limited edition of numbered multiples. (However, Gualala Arts carries no inventory of multiples. Artists are responsible for delivery or mailing of multiple sales. Additionally, signed/numbered entries will be enforced.)

Each entry must be entered by a living artist who created the entry within the last two ( 2 ) years.

Entries must never have been exhibited in Art in the Redwoods before.

The limit is two ( 2 ) entries per artist. SIZE AND WEIGHT One wall-hung entry can be maximum 60” wide; the

second entry may only be 48” wide or less. If entries are a set to be hung side by side, their total

width cannot exceed 60.” Each piece of a two piece set is considered a separate entry. Sets of more than two pieces cannot be accommodated.

The weight limit for each entry is 70 pounds. Exceptions can be made by prior arrangement. See *Exceptions and Special Circumstances below.

For entries made of glass, see *Exceptions and Special Circumstances below.

An entry may be refused if it’s exceptionally fragile, if space is not available, or if it does not adhere to these Exhibition Rules.

PREPARING ENTRIES Ensure paintings are thoroughly dry. Picture frames must be strong and will be tested for

sturdiness. Avoid plastic or “clip” frames. We prefer Plexiglas. Affix strong metal picture wire a minimum of 2” from the top of the frame’s back to ensure that neither the wire nor the picture hanger on the wall will show. Saw tooth hangers on the back of entries are prohibited.

Enclose jewelry or small sculptures in display cases or shadow box frames for protection.

Fabric entries must have hanging tabs or sleeves with a rod or dowel labeled with the artist’s name.

No supplemental labels, descriptions, books, promotional materials, etc., are allowed next to or around an entry. A binder will be provided for one 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper per entry for a description

of the entry, artist’s statement and/or the artist’s biography. The binder will be available in the gallery for public viewing.

*Exceptions and special circumstances: For entries within the weight limit: artists are asked

to assist in handling large three-dimensional artwork or to furnish display stands if the artwork requires it.

For entries above the weight limit: entries of glass to be suspended or all unusually complex or fragile entries, the artists are required to participate in placement. Usually, these entries are placed before “take in” Sunday. Call Executive Director David “Sus” Susalla at 707-884-1138 before August 1 to make arrangements.

Outdoor entries must be non-permanent and removable, and remain outdoors for the duration of the exhibit. Installation by the artist must be completed by Friday before “take in” Sunday.

FEES Gualala Arts members: $10 per entry/$20 per NFS

entry. Non-members must join Gualala Arts for an annual

membership fee of $30 for individuals (or $50 per family) plus the $10 per entry fee (or $20 if NFS).

Checks should be made payable to Gualala Arts. Entry fees are not refundable. A $5 fee will be charged for changes to the entry

form made after submission. Changes made after the entry form deadline will not be included in the Independent Coast Observer’s “Art in the Redwoods Official Show Program.”

Proof of insurance may be required for work priced over $5,000.

COMMISSIONS Gualala Arts will retain 30% commission on all sales

of entries (or multiples) made during the course of the exhibit.

Checks for artwork sold will be mailed to the artist within two weeks of the end of the month in which it was sold. If the exhibit generates future commissions, it is the policy of Gualala Arts to request that 10% of those sales be sent to Gualala Arts.

June 2015 - Page 10

damage of artworks entered in the show. Exhibitors are solely responsible for their work and

should insure work if they desire. Gualala Arts may require proof of insurance if a work is priced over $5,000.

Gualala Arts will not ship purchases. If an entry requires mailing to a potential purchaser, Gualala Arts will contact the artist. If the artist wishes to package and mail the piece to the buyer, Gualala Arts will complete the purchase.

Submission of an entry implies acceptance of all conditions stated in this document.

GUALALA ARTS RESERVES THE RIGHT: To change category classification of any entry. To its sole discretion to refuse to display any

Recent Awards

Nick Kerttula and Fred Mitouer took the first place awards for youth and adult categories respectively in the 2015 Creative Writing Poetry Contest. The winners were honored on May 12 at the Gualala Arts Center. Three winners in both youth and adult categories were selected by a panel of five judges from entries submitted by 29 local writers. The winning first place poems were published in the May 15 Independent Coast Observer. The winners were:

Gualala Arts awarded this year’s Young Artist Scholarship to Joshua James Riboli, a graduating senior from Point Arena High School. He presented the committee with his portfolio of the art work that he created while in high school and shared his plans

for continuing his pursuit of art related education as he graduates and heads to college. “We are delighted to be able to provide a scholarship for this excellent student who is pursuing careers in the arts,” said Gualala Arts Scholarship Committee Chair Nancy Kyle. “Joshua is a very qualified applicant with a strong work ethic and has explored a wide variety of artistic media.” Riboli has been very active in the community and has completed over 300 volunteer hours. He has been accepted at Cabrillo Community College in Aptos, CA where he plans to take courses in the visual arts as well as guitar and song writing. His goals include creating designs for a clothing line, exploring song writing and pursuing a career in the visual arts.

Wine Tasting & Auction HUGE Thanks to all Wine Tasting & Auction donors, sponsors, volunteers & guests!

Every year the Wine Tasting & Auction just gets bigger, better and more fun and this year was no exception. Over 450 guests came and sampled great wines from our Pouring Wineries and made winning bids on the 105 silent auction lots. This signature event couldn’t happen without the dedication of the committee, the support of the wineries and other businesses that donate their products and services to the event, the partnership with Soroptimist International of Mendocino-Sonoma Coast (SIMC) and of course the many volunteers that work so tirelessly before, during and after the event.

The Workshop Committee Can Use Your Skills Anyone interested in dusting off those old great business skills such as attention to detail, strong telephone communications, and the ability to coordinate and share information within a small team? If so, you are needed to help the Gualala Arts Workshop Committee run itself. We are looking for someone to handle the administrative tasks needed to seek and secure workshops. With a Workshop Committee team identifying the desired artists in the mediums we’d like to offer in our Arts Center workshops and Gualala Arts staff providing the implementation support, we just need a “middle-person” to handle the “seek and secure” processes associated with presenting the workshops. If you’d like to test the waters and attend a Workshop Committee meeting please join us on the first Thursday of each month (call to confirm time). A written summary of job tasks is also available for review. If interested please contact Susan King at (707) 884-1138 or email your request or questions to [email protected]. You can also feel free to contact any of the Workshop Committee Members directly: Bruce Jones, Jeanne Henderson, Karen Tracy or Judy Pfeifer.

And the beat goes on . .

We have a very special

opportunity to share the magic

between Father and Son this

month. On June 13 we are

having the Brubeck Brothers

Quartet play at Gualala Arts

Center honoring their father

Dave Brubeck. This is a great

example of how the amazing

legacy of Dave Brubeck is truly

living on in those he has

touched. Not only are his sons

accomplished musicians; they

are carrying on his special

ability to connect with the

audience and bring magic to the

air so everyone in the room is

participating.

My father and I used to listen to the music of Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich, Glenn Miller and many others. I

will always remember how the music brought us together and set a platform for us to have special

conversations.

I am firm believer that we touch those around us with our actions, words, art, food, conversations and love.

I also believe that our spirits live on, after we transition, with those around us in memories and carrying on

those traits we love so much.

Please join me this year in remembering someone who has moved you and try to carry on those positive

traits you loved in that person.

As my dad used to say, “And the beat goes on . . .”

A Message from the Executive Director . . .

Chris, Dave and Dan Brubeck
