PERFORMANCES

Friday November 14, 7:00 p.m. - Lead Cast One Saturday November 15, 7:00 p.m. - Lead Cast Two Sunday November 16, 2:00 p.m. - Lead Cast One Thursday November 20, 7:00 p.m. - Lead Cast Two Friday November 21, 7:00 p.m. - Lead Cast One Saturday November 22, 7.00 p.m. - Lead Cast Two

Both a thriller and a dark love story, Jekyll & Hyde based on “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” by Robert Louis Stevenson is an evocative tale of two men – one a doctor, passionate and romantic – the other, a terrifying madman; and two women - one, beautiful and trusting – the other, beautiful and trusting only herself. Both women are in love with the same man. Both are unaware of his dark secret. A devoted man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll is driven to find a chemical breakthrough that can solve one of mankind’s most challenging medical dilemmas.

Rebuffed by the powers that be, he decides to make himself the subject of his own experimental treatment, accidentally unleashing his inner demon the man the world would come to know as Mr. Edward Hyde. Directed by Teo Ariola, the three leading roles have been double-cast, offering audiences two interpretations of the musical. The cast of 26 performers consists of seasoned veterans that you have seen on our stage before as well as first time thespians who will surprise and delight you. Musical direction is by Don Krieger, Vocal coaching by Sita Milchev and choreography by Bryn Harris.

The passion of the music is mysterious as well as lyrical. Songs from the show such as “Someone Like You,” “A New Life” and “This Is the Moment” have been performed worldwide and have been featured at the Olympics, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the World Cup international soccer championships, Miss America Pageants, the 1996 Democratic National Convention and the inauguration of President Clinton (sung by Jennifer Holliday). Unlike other musicals performed here at Gualala Arts Center, this show is more of an operetta with the story being told through the music with minimal dialog. Duets abound between the three leads leaving you wanting more.

GUALALA ARTS CHAMBER MUSIC

Gualala Arts Center Coleman Auditorium

Sunday, November 9, 4 p.m. The Virtuosi Quintet, now in its 28th season, was formed in 1983 to showcase the soloistic talents of five exceptional New York artists - James Jeter, bassoon, Elizabeth Condon, oboe, . In February, 1985, the Quintet made its critically acclaimed Carnegie Recital Hall debut. Subsequently Musical America Magazine named the group "Young Artists of 1986". Since that time the Quintet has made numerous national tours through Columbia Artists Management, and has appeared in major concert halls, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, Chamber Music Society of the Monterey Peninsula and the Harvard Musical Association. As soloists with the Atlantic Sinfonietta, the Quintet was featured in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, and has performed with the Sinfonietta in a series of CDs for Koch International Classics. The Quintet has also recorded the music of American composer Robert Baksa on the Capstone and Musical Heritage Society labels. The Virtuosi were also the core winds for the Twentieth Century Unlimited chamber ensemble (Santa Fe, NM). The Quintet has performed frequently on WQXR, WNCN and WBAI Radio in New York City, as well as public radio stations in New York State, California, Maine and Ohio.

Día de los Muertos Celebration Sunday, November 2, 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Gualala Arts Center Coleman Auditorium

While Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a tradition unique to Mexico, it is becoming a very

popular holiday in the United States. Javier Chavez, bilingual bicultural family advocate for Action

Network, comments, “There is an appeal here which just crosses right over the culture line. People who

are Latino, who speak no Spanish, really relate to the experience. I think this is because it's an integration

of life and death - it's about family togetherness, and honoring

who we are. This eases the grief of losing someone we care for,

and it takes away the fear.”

The Día de los Muertos celebration will include a traditional

Mexican feast, a flute performance by Fide Mata, the Coast

Folkloric Dancers and music throughout the day by Santa Rosa’s

Mariachi Tecoman.

Gualala Arts is asking the community to participate in this special celebration

by creating shrines to their loved ones that will be installed at the Gualala Arts

Center on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. To get more information

about creating a shrine or to register to participate, please contact Gualala Arts

at [email protected] or call (707) 884-1138.

Tickets for the dinner are $10 for adults and $5 for youth under 17 when purchased in advance, and include

free admission to the celebration. Admission to the celebration on the day of the event will be $5 and those

wishing to enjoy the dinner can purchase tickets for the dinner at the same prices as advance tickets.

Dinner will consist of a choice of Chicken Mole, meat or vegetarian tamales, served with rice and beans.

Traditional Mexican drinks Agva Fresca, Jamica, Horchas, Lemon and Pineapple will be available for $2.

Desserts, also $2, will include soft serve ice cream and brownies.

Songs to Shorten Winter’s Sadness Mendonoma Chamber Chorus Sunday, November 30, 4 p.m.

This soprano / alto / tenor / bass chorus specializes in fine a cappella music from the 15th through 20th

centuries. It will be joined again this year by professional mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie of Philadelphia.

Regular local members are Marjie van Gunten, Jane Schuler-Repp, Pat Wilson, Linda Eastman, Anne

Minckley Early and music director Roland Stoughton.

The program includes many pieces being performed by the group for the first time, such as the madrigal

"To Shorten Winter's Sadness," which lends the title for the concert, as well as favorites from past years

such as the Tchaikovsky adaptation "Plum" and the Alberto Grau cradle songs "Canción de Cuna."

The Chorus' members in general have classical music

training, and the group sets itself the goal of refining

the quality of performance with each passing year.

Thanks to all the loyal followers who have provided

encouragement and motivation in this endeavor! And

to all who are at loose ends in the few days after

Thanksgiving, we hope to see you on November 30 at

Gualala Arts Center!

There is still time to enter your shamelessly commercial, designed to SELL art in the Shameless! exhibit in December. The exhibit encourages artists to enter innovative new work, breakthroughs in concept and design, pieces that explore the idea of art as a salable product that satisfies some basic human need.

Embrace the aesthetic of what appeals to the broadest audience, whether that's Norman Rockwell, Walter Keane or Charles Schultz. Dabble in questionable media normally forbidden to serious artists, like painting on black velvet, or plaster cast wall decorations or functional ceramics. Or, cast all sensibility aside and SHAMELESSLY dive directly into KITSCH! Find the kewpie doll in the artistic soul and exploit it mercilessly to the masses for fame and profit! Dogs playing poker! Pink flamingos! Elvis doing anything! The possibilities are endless!

Registration forms available online or at the Gualala Arts Center, enter by November 7!

Gualala Arts' Eleventh Annual Festival of Trees will

transform the entire Arts Center into mid-19th

Century Gualala. Highlights include festively

decorated booths displaying handcrafted wares and

demonstrations in both the Coleman Auditorium and

the Burnett Gallery. The Gualala Arts Interest Groups will fill the Burnett Gallery with a wonderful display of

crafts handmade by our own Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Fiber Arts Group, Woodcarvers and

Woodworkers groups, Basket Makers and Beads n' Beyond.

Holiday cookies, breads, puddings, fruitcake and an assortment of

confections will be available for sale at Mrs. Claus' Bake Shoppe &

Confectionery. Local bakers and candy makers donate goods from

their favorite holiday recipes (many handed down through the

generations) to this appetizing shop. New this year will be an

amazing offering of whole pies and cakes for sale, so be sure to bring

your sweet tooth and take home the perfect dessert to go along with

those Thanksgiving leftovers! And, if you’d like to be part of the

creative crew making these delicacies please see page 12 for details

on how to participate and contribute.

A wide variety of vendors have committed to participate in this year’s Festival, offering an impressive array of

choices to mark off your holiday shopping list. Just a few examples of the kind of offerings you can expect:

November 2014 - Page 9

Festival-goers will be greeted in the foyer by the Old

Gualala Mill Cookhouse serving fresh baked goods in

the morning, and hearty homemade vittles for lunch,

as well as fresh coffee, hot chocolate, chilled apple

juice, and hot-spiced apple cider. For the adults, there

will be the yummy winter beverage called "Scrumpy" available as well as spiked egg nog. Refreshed, you may

continue shopping for those perfect gifts and take a closer look at the beautifully decorated Fantasy Trees

decorated with exquisite ornaments, the sale of which benefits Gualala Arts.

Due to the popularity of this Festival, we will have several vendors offering their hand crafted wares in the

upstairs library and gallery. A new and improved payment system is also being implemented, with shoppers

being able to pay the vendors directly for their purchases rather than having a central cash register. No more

long lines to get those perfect gifts!

The Magical Gingerbread House will again offer activities

and crafts for the children, and it has now moved into the Clay

Studio downstairs at the Arts Center. For the delight of

children of all ages there will be daily visits from Santa Claus,

along with Mrs. Claus, his sleigh and reindeer and a snow

flurry direct from the North Pole in the DePrima Terrace!

The Friday Festival time has been extended to 6 p.m. this year so that Festival goers can

enjoy the tree lighting around 5:15 p.m. and sing Christmas carols to close out the day

while enjoying complimentary hot cider and home baked cookies.

Santa has also put together a very special Go Local basket that will be a raffle prize awarded at the end of the

Festival on Saturday. You don’t need to be present to win. The basket will be

on display at the Arts Center in early November and tickets will be

available at the Arts Center up to and during the Festival of Trees.

spectacular! She is a member of the Elk Grove and River City

Quilt Guilds. Her accomplishments include five Best of Show

awards and six “Best Use of Color” awards at local guilds,

THE POWER OF RANDOM ACTS OF SUPPORT TO GUALALA ARTS Gualala Arts is able to constantly pursue its goal of promoting public interest and participation in the arts because of its incredibly dedicated, talented, passionate, hard-working and enthusiastic army of volunteers and artists. We also depend on donations of money, materials, art, equipment and other items that are put to use in a variety of ways that help the Arts Center continue to be the heart of the North Coast arts community. It would be impossible to list all of the volunteers that gave their time in the course of a month, the artists in our exhibits, and the donations large and small that we received even if we used this entire issue of Sketches to do it. We do want to use this one page to share just a small sample of the Random Acts of Support that we were blessed with recently, thank the people that performed them, and hope that they inspire similar acts and donations from our readers. HUGE thanks to ALL of our volunteers, artists, patrons and donors for their support!

A Rumination on What’s Important It is my honor and privilege to write what to me has always been one of the most important parts of the monthly Sketches - the message from the Executive Director who we all know is Sus. For those of you that aren’t regular visitors or volunteers at the Arts Center, you may not know that Sus’ mom Nell was in a serious car accident several weeks ago. Since that time Sus has been in Detroit providing the type of moral, physical and spiritual support that only Sus can to both Nell and his family. The Arts Center has felt his absence keenly, but has also felt his spirit and love for this place surrounding it every day, and been reminded of just how important Sus is both personally to all of us that are blessed to work with him and to Gualala Arts as an organization. These last several weeks without Sus as a daily part of my life has reminded me of what is truly important, and that is the family that surrounds us. It is said that you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family. As I reflect on my friends and family I realize that isn’t true - the friends that you choose become your family, in some cases closer and more important than the ones you share blood with. That is true in my life, where the friends I have today are as much my fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins , aunts and uncles as the family I grew up with - in many cases even closer. I cherish the “older brother” that I came to have by working at the Arts Center - the wonderful, charming, always positive and incredibly artistic Jim Grenwelge. My office “Aunt,” Susan King, makes each day at work a pleasure, as does my “cousin” Scott Chieffo. I feel surrounded by the most diverse, supportive and loving family every time I am here for work or an event. Sharon, Doric, Jane, Harriet, Sara, Gary, JoAnn, Fred, Cate, Ben, P.D., Don, Kristen, Ling-Yen, John, Irma and everyone else that supports this amazing organization put smiles on my face, give hugs of support when I need them and make up the best family I could ever hope for. And then there is Sus, the younger brother I never had but do now. I can’t begin to put into words what he means to me, so I will simply say that I love him with all my heart and thank the universe for making him part of my family. I think of him every day and send my positive thoughts and energy eastward to him as he spends his days and nights giving his family the same type of love and support he has shown to all of us at Gualala Arts. No matter what your beliefs are, I would ask that you all take moment to do whatever feels right for you and give Sus your support - prayers, positive thoughts, petitions to the universe, appeals to the Powers That Be, lighting candles, asking your guardian angel to sit on Sus’ shoulder, whatever. He will feel it and it will nourish his spirit, and by extension will do the same for his family - his mom Nell, brother Scott and wife Harmony.

And take a moment to hug your “family” and tell them how much they mean to you . . .

A Message from the Executive Director . . .
