SIU Lecture SeriesKAREN HUDKINS MORGAN SPOKE ON THE CULTURE, LITERATURE, AND HISTORY OF THE APPALACHIAN REGION

On April 12, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Brewster’s All Faiths Chapel, Salem International University began the 2012 Lecture Series with an evening presentation on the culture, literature and history of the Appalachian Region with a focus on West Virginia. The evening featured a cameo appearance by Phebe Tucker Cunningham from her time of captivity and life in 18th century western Virginia.

Karen Hudkins Morgan, feature presenter, has been a teacher in the local public schools for the past 36 years, 21 of which she has taught at Lincoln High School from where she retired.

She has taught English for Fairmont State University and education courses for Salem International University and served for a time as Interim Dean of Education at SIU. She has always been a teacher at heart and has been privileged to live her life doing her life’s passion—teaching.

Mrs. Morgan has served on the Teacher Quality Task Force for the West Virginia State Department of Education. Through the Center for Professional Development she taught in the Governor’s Summer Institutes for Teachers and also served on the English Vertical Teams Committee whose goal was to implement programs that would elevate curriculum standards in the state classrooms in language arts/English.

Karen has been a pioneer in the teaching field by piloting new courses, most notably she developed and taught a course in Appalachian Literature and Culture at Lincoln High School. She presented this course content at a variety of national conferences.

Karen has also served as Education Coordinator for the Teaching History Through the Arts Curriculum with the Pricketts Fort Memorial Foundation. She organized and trained teachers/writers to develop and then publish the curriculum. Karen has been the recipient of several recognitions for her teaching including Harrison County Language Arts Teacher of the Year and being the only female teacher to be named as Lincoln High School’s Most Influential Female Teacher by each graduating class since the late 1980’s until her retirement in 2004. In the fall of 1993 Karen was awarded the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award (which includes a $25,000 monetary award and a trip to Beverly Hills).

Most recently, at the request of the Benedum Festival Committee, Karen was commissioned to write a play based on the stories of the life of the late Michael Benedum found in the works of Sam Mallison, author of The Great Wildcatter and Let’s Set a Spell. The resulting work is a play in two acts entitled “Set a Spell…Talkin’ With Michael Benedum” which she wrote along with her son, Justin P. Morgan and with original songs by Tom Price. This play was presented two

consecutive summers at the Benedum Festival in Bridgeport, W.Va.

The evening included excerpts from little-known stories that support the development of our unique culture and literature that reflects the culture. It also told the story of many unique Appalachian/West Virginians and their contributions as Scots/Irish leaders in America. Most uniquely, the case was made for the vanguard status of much of the culture of the United States as having Appalachian origins.
