Mamadou Seck spokequietly in the lounge areaof the new SouthernIllinois University men’sbasketball locker room.

Seck, one of three juniorcollege players transfers,has never played an offi-cial game in a Saluki uni-form, but the 6-foot-7,210-pound forward has noquestion of the team’s firstemphasis this season, winor lose.

“I’ve tried to play hardand tried to make themunderstand it’s time to winand to play hard,” Secksaid. “That’s what it’sabout now.”

Three years removedfrom the team’s lastappearance in the NCAAtournament and two yearsfrom a winning record,SIU coach Chris Lowerywent after the type ofplayers who got theSalukis to the year’sbiggest postseason event.Lowery brought in six newplayers (if you include tworedshirt freshmen), whoall had one thing in com-mon: All have defensive-minded backgrounds.

“It’s going to be inter-esting to see because theyall want to do what’s right,and they all understandthe history of what’s beenhere. We asked them, ‘Ifyou just do the system,good things will happen,’”Lowery said. “They haveembraced it, and that has

been a good thing aboutthis group of kids. There isno complaining, there isno asking, ‘Why do wehave to do this?’ There’snone of that. That lets usknow that they can obvi-ously be taught things andpick things up at a muchquicker rate.”

The Salukis have fiveseniors to try to turn thetide back to when SIU wasa constant contender inthe MVC. Last season, SIUfinished 6-12 in theleague. It was the firsttime since 1996-97 thatthe Salukis finished ninthin the standings.

Before 2008-09, whenSIU tied for fifth, theSalukis hadn’t finishedlower than third in theprevious seven seasons.

Seniors Carlton Fay,John Freeman and JustinBocot, along with sopho-more center Gene Teague,hope the turn toward thedefensive end pays quickdividends.

“Yeah, we’ve got a lot ofnew faces, but we’ve got agood core coming back,”said Fay, the only fourth-year player on the team.“The new guys haveshown a willingness tolearn, a willingness to lis-ten, pay attention, andthat’s going to, hopefully,bring good things whenpractice starts.”

Southeastern IllinoisCollege transfer Troy Longhas been one of the mostproductive newcomersthrough the Salukis’ two

exhibition games. Theshooting guard had ateam-high 12 points in theopener against Quincy andhit a 3-pointer in the sec-ond half to key a 9-0 runthat led to SIU’s 65-58 winover Indianapolis onSaturday. Aside from hisoffense, Long could be abig leader for a team withsix underclassmen.

“I love the group. We’reall as one,” Long said.“We’ve got each other’sbacks, and we all have onegoal, and that is to win andget the program back towhere it used to be.”

The Salukis averagedmore than 70 points pergame last season (70.1),but allowed 67.5 points pergame, the most in

Lowery’s six seasons ascoach. Two of SIU’s topscorers from a year ago aregone, but what’s left couldget the Salukis movingback toward the reputa-tion they built asFloorburn U. Seven of theteam’s top 11 from last sea-son return.

“The toughness that ittook to be able to get on

the floor for a loose ballwon’t be an issue anymore,” Lowery said. “Wewatched over plays a lotthe past two years. Wewatched people do toughthings while we com-plained, and now it’s notthat way.”

Entering coach MissyTiber’s second season inCarbondale, the fortunes ofSouthern Illinois Universitywomen’s basketball teamrest on two returningstarters and a ton of promisein 2010-11.

Senior forward KatrinaSwingler is the only playeron the 16-person roster toplay all four years at SIUArena. The Teutopolisnative is expected to provideleadership to a squad with10 new faces, includingMcDonald’s All-Americannominee Brooke LeMar andpoint guard OliviaPatterson.

“This is my last year, sothis is all I’ve got,” Swinglersaid. “I’ve got to help theseniors give all they’ve got

for the team.”Beyond Swingler, who

averaged 7.8 points and 3.8rebounds in 2009-10, soph-omore guard Teri Oliver willhelp steer the ship as theother returning SIU starter.Oliver averaged 13.1 pointsper game last season, whichled all Missouri ValleyConference freshmen, andshe was named to the con-ference’s All-Freshmanteam as a result.

“Unless she’s in foultrouble, or she’s tired, Teriis going to be a kid who’sgoing to play 33 or 35 min-utes a night,” Tiber said.“That’s my philosophy as acoach, regardless of howdeep I am.

“The best kids are going toplay and the kids that playthe hardest and do what weask them to do are going toplay.”

After saying that shewould not redshirt anyplayers this season at SIU’smedia day, Tiber said thatrecent developments havecaused her to re-think thatapproach.

“As we’ve come out of(media day) in the last twoweeks, some things havechanged for us,” Tiber said.“I just think that maybe akid or two needs to be red-shirted in order to give themfour strong years, instead offive or six minutes here orthere in a game.”

Coming off a 5-24 season(including a 4-14 showing inconference play), SIU hasset itself up to have muchbetter success this season.The Salukis will not partici-pate in any tournaments,play five of their first sixgames at home and theteam’s longest road trip is a

four-game stretch fromDec. 18 to Jan. 2 where itwon’t leave the Midwest.

“Every single day, we’retrying to get kids to performand be consistent from dayto day,” Tiber said. “Somekids show some brightspots and then they disap-pear for a couple days andthen they’ll come backagain.”

SIU opens the seasonFriday at home against theUniversity of Tennessee-Martin. Tipoff is scheduledfor 7:05 p.m. The Salukiswill also host TennesseeState (Nov. 16) andNorthern Illinois (Nov. 19)before embarking on thefirst road trip of the seasonNov. 24 against WesternMichigan.
