Volunteers Make Our Events Incredible! I was lucky enough to be able to help out at this year’s

Elvis beach party event on July 27. What a fun night it was! One of our guests told me it’s her special time once a year to “let her hair down and have some fun.” We want you all to be able to come in and have some fun like this every day…so thank you for being a part of the Center. Our incredible volunteers who made the night

possible are Bianca Thomka who created an atmosphere of beach party wonderment with her decorations, Jan Fisher was our amazing guest chef for the evening, Lora

milk a cow, then she would never have to do it. So de-spite living on a farm, Zey never did milk a cow and was well taken care of as the baby of the family. She later moved to Idaho and eventu-ally landed in West Seattle. She worked for the state as a book-keeper. It is here in West Seattle that she raised her own family – a boy and a girl. She now enjoys her five grandchil-dren and ten great grandchildren. Her unique middle name has been passed down through the family and has now been used by four generations!

Zey is still living independently at home. Her son calls her every morning, “Just to make sure I’m up!” she says. In her spare time, Zey loves to bowl and you can find her at West Seattle Bowl twice a week – she’s got quite an arm on her! She loves sports and played softball for years and enjoys watching football and the Mariners. She also enjoys time spent on the quarter slots at the casinos and she says, “Sometimes I get lucky!” We are the luckiest of all to have Zey share her time here with us for over 32 years!

Volunteer Extraordinaire - Zey KolzeThey say dancing helps keep you young and keeps your brain fit. There’s proof in this with one of our oldest and longest active volunteers, 97 year-old Zey Kolze. Zey and her husband loved to dance and would go dancing every Satur-day night. A friend introduced them, and they were married just one month later!

Zey is one of our longest term volunteers. She has been donating her time to the Center for approximately 32 years! She started out volunteering at the front desk as a recep-tionist. Some years later, she decided to try something new and moved down to work in the Stop ‘N Shop, where she currently volunteers on Fridays as a cashier. She remembers back when she first started volunteering in the shop, they were working out of a cash box. They didn’t even have a cash register yet!

Zey looks forward to her Fridays in the Stop ‘N Shop and really enjoys the people she works with. A fellow volunteer remembers a time that Zey showed up with a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie in a cooler to share with the other volunteers. Zey is just as sweet as that pie!

Zey was born in Nebraska and named Nella Zey Allen. (Her first name is her last name backwards.) She was the young-est of twelve children. As the youngest, she said her older siblings were almost like aunts and uncles to her. For years her family had a farm. When living on the farm, one of her older sisters once told her that if she didn’t learn how to

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?  The bad news is that for people over 75, the rate of mortality from falls more than doubled from 2000 to 2016. It’s the leading cause of accidental death in older adults, according to the chief of geriatrics at Duke University School of Medicine. The reasons are unclear, but it may be that people are living longer with conditions that they may have died from in the past, according to a scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-tion. The good news is that falls are not inevitable as one ages, and they are preventable!

We can’t make ourselves younger, but most risk factors for falling other than age can be reduced or eliminated. Here are some ways to reduce your risk of falling based on recent research: daily exercise, especially the kind that requires standing, like Tai Chi, reduces the rate of falls by 23 percent, and the number of people who fall by 15 percent. These numbers are significant.

Some medications may affect balance even when taken alone and may contribute to dehydration, which can cause dizziness. Also, drugs can interact with each other and cause dizziness and sleepiness, making you more vulnerable to falling. It’s a good idea to review all your medications--prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements--with your primary care physician at least once a year.

Eyesight changes with age, and changes like macular degeneration and cataracts, as well as Type 2 diabetes, can affect vision and make it more difficult to see obsta-cles in the street, cracks in the pavement, and uneven

Toni’s Tips - Better Balancesidewalks. Be sure to have an annual eye exam or as often as your optome-trist or ophthalmologist recommends.

Certain types of foot-wear can also contrib-ute to falls. High heels should be avoided, and all older adults should wear shoes with a back and a good tread on the sole. Safety should take priority over fashion!

You can also take a number of steps to reduce the risk of falling in your home. In the bathroom, you can install grab bars around tubs and toilets and use a nonslip rub-ber mat in the shower. Keep your house well-lit inside, especially at the top and bottom of staircases. Clear clutter such as pet toys, electrical cords, and shoes from frequently-traveled areas. If you can part with them, give away your area rugs or keep them in place with carpet tacks or double-sided tape. If you have stairs and have a rail on only one side, add a rail to the other side to increase safety.

Don’t miss our free workshop entitled “The Better Bal-ance and Less Falls Class” by physical therapist Pierre Butheau. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at 11am. He will teach exercises you do at home to improve your balance and provide more advice to help reduce the risk of falling. Everyone is welcome. See below for details!

■ Inquiring Minds Book Reading/Discussion Group Tuesdays ....................................................1-2pm$1 members $2 non-membersThe group has chosen the next three books with the under-standing that there may be a change if something new is pub-lished that cannot be resisted!First up is Stories of Elders by Veronica Kirin.
