We are delighted to be holding our second solo exhibition of paintings by Simeon Stafford, the Cornish based naïve artist. The immediate impression when you look at a Simeon Stafford painting is the naïve and colourful vitality of his work. His paintings contain a ‘riot’ of colour and movement, combining reality with dreams and happy memories for the artist. Works in this exhibition feature well known Cornish destinations along-side northern scenes, a combination of Simeon’s present and past, as ever paintings bear the trademark characters, Aunt Dot, the cart wheeling girl, the family dog Trixie (Simeon’s Jack Russell who lived until 28), there is Ruby the pig tailed girl who lives on St. Michael’s Mount, and colourful donkeys, a reference to the animals on Simeon’s farm. In others you will come across Simeon himself (the man in red striped trousers) pulling his son through life, and across the canvas at a tremendous pace. The lovely thing about Simeon is his passion for life, he believes ’Life should be full of fun’ and this is of-ten depicted in his paintings too – provoking a smile and pleasure to many. His popularity and success as one of Britain’s leading living naïve artists goes from strength to strength. Earlier this year a book ‘Simeon Stafford’ by Jonathan Riley was published, giving his collectors even more insight into the man behind these splendid paintings. The Gallery has a number of these books which have been signed by the artist. Amongst other people his paintings can also be found in the collection of HRH The Queen and in the past have been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Cornwall Museum.
