Case Study
Information planning & wayfindingsystem for the Mumbai International & Domestic Airport
PROJECT PROFILEMumbai Airport Domestic Terminal (1A) area 200,000 sq. ft. and International Terminal (2B & 2C) area 900,000 sq. ft.:
• Design Planning & Concept for Ground + Mezzanine and 1st Floor Terminal refurbishing in phases: Intermediate & Permanent signage
• Signage design to compliment airport terminal interiors• Follow international civil aviation standards i.e. ICAO, DOT• Quick on fabricate and easy installation• Meeting project timelines as per airport refurbishing phases • Project management, supervision and implementation
DESIGN SOLUTIONThe information classification was planned as per usability – colours were selected keeping in mind visibility as well as the contrast and interiors of the final layout - a combination of modern, innovative grey for utilities and vibrant blue for passenger flow. Boards were standardized in different categories (with codes) and selection of board made as per the content and communication required. Communication and informative posters were represented pictorially. Typefaces were kept open enough to be legible at a distance and steady enough to withstand fabrication techniques. After many explorations and discussions we successfully arrived to a non backlit signage structure and unit system for the inside terminal, which is also energy efficient, low on maintenance and quick on installation.

1 Font Style
Whitney Semi Bold designed by Toblas Frere-Jones, is designed for way finding program, open enough to be legible at a distance, versatile enough for fabrication techniques like being cast in bronze, etched in glass, cut in vinyl or rendered in pixels.
The typeface and style chosen for English and Hindi languages complements each other withsimilar characteristics.
2 Two basic colour coding; blue and dark grey were used to differentiate passenger flow and utility information
3 Direction arrow style; the form and thickness of the arrow has been design and modified to match the typeface style; Use of downward pointing arrow was avoided

Signage plotting, flow and implementation guide:
The signage numbers are plotted on the actual positions on the map of the airport terminal. Corresponding content signage documents were made to understand the orientation and location of the signs.
The BOQ were prepared with detail specifications for the complete signage system for easy reference and project tracking.
