Raised $190 towards supplies for the Boys & Girls Club of Charlottetown after-school program. Worked with low income youth & children with disabilities during 3 week program.

Used donated canvases that were otherwise destined for a landfill.

Transferred our knowledge of marketing, production, finance, and ethics.

Boys & Girls Club lost $30,000 in program funding this year. No room for extras.

Empowering youth to create wealth for themselves, boosted confidence of participants. New supplies were purchased that would not be possible before. Helped kids see entrepreneurship as a possibility for their future. Showed the value of working as a team to achieve a common goal.

Developed strong partnership with B & G Club that will continue for 2012/2013.

Awarded $8,500 in funding to 5 student entrepreneurs, potentially increasing revenue for their start-up businesses.

Created jobs & wealth for students who may not otherwise have employment.

Whole submission & preliminary judging process was online, no paper used.

Marketed the competition through various channels, secured funding for 3rd year.

Statistically, PEI is the toughest job market in the country. 9 people unemployed people for every 4 job openings. Stimulated entrepreneurship by providing valuable resources to take business to the next level. Increased wealth through valuable capital investment that may not have been received otherwise.

Third year running Nicol Competition, increased participation from 8 students last year, to 20. Success & growth ensure continuation for years to come.

Many seniors are living on a fixed budget and must protect the little money they have. Cannot afford to become a victim of fraud.Lack of knowledge on fraud issues expose seniors to scammers. Low confidence in handling these situations.After documents were shredded, they were taken for recycling - avoiding the landfill. Also encouraged participants to switch to online banking.Networking, marketing & organizing of the workshops. Developed strong partnership with the Charlottetown Police Services.Over $30,000 is lost to fraud each year on PEI but the majority of cases go unreported. Seniors who have been educated are relived of the stress and fear of becoming scammed. They are now able to see the signs and are educated for prevention. Avoided being scammed - can now protect their savings and live comfortably.

A new partnership with PEI Seniors Safety will take the program province wide this spring.

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS

FOOD DRIVESIn developing a partnership with the Charlottetown Food Bank, our team raised and donated a total of 6,300 pounds of food through various food drive events throughout the year. This represents over 7,500 meals provided for Island families. SIFE UPEI became one of only a handful of Canadian teams that received a $2,000 project funding grant from Campbells Soup Company to support our work with the food bank. In addition, we also worked to promote and increase awareness of the campus food bank at UPEI - raising funds and providing marketing assistance.

FINANCIALLY FITIn partnership with Junior Achievement of PEI, SIFE UPEI carried out a workshop with 40 high school students to teach the basics of budgeting and finances for life after graduation. By targeting rural students who often move away from home building high student debt, we were able to speak from experience and provide the necessary skills and knowledge they needed to manage their money. 92% of these students altered their initial budgets after our program to reflect a more realistic plan.

Purchased $900 freezer. Project will create another $800 in revenue in fall 2012. Low income families trapped in the poverty cycle may place less importance on healthy eating. Purchased new freezer reducing energy consumption by approx. 20% compared to old. Donating 200 cookbooks & selling 100 more to generate revenue for new equipment.

Many food bank users waste food because they do not know how to prepare meals with what they are given. Users often eat unhealthy foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Healthier lifestyle, less waste, and improved operations at our local food bank.Educated families to make better use of their resources by reducing food waste and improving nutrition. Purchase of new equipment that will improve the long-term sustainability of the Charlottetown Food Bank. 2 year project.
