How does a honeybee unlock the positive power of business for an entire community?
A head for business. A heart for the world. SM
By providing the means for a better life. The SIFE team
at Obafemi Awolowo University helped struggling farmers in
Ayeoba, Nigeria learn beekeeping and counter the effect of
declining demand for their traditional crops through harvesting
and selling honey. Using microfinancing and training in financial
management, they’ve adapted their livelihoods, increased
their incomes by 320% and generated new business for the
carpenters and welders who construct their hives.
SIFE is an international organization that brings together a diverse network of
university students, academic professionals and industry leaders who share the
vision of creating a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of
business. By contributing their talents to projects that improve the lives of people
worldwide, SIFE participants are demonstrating that individuals with a knowledge
and passion for business can be a powerful force for change.
Generations of Leaders
The La Sierra University SIFE
team partnered with a local
family service organization in
Riverside, California to train
low-income individuals on how
to operate a childcare service
in their homes. More than
240 of the participants have
successfully started businesses,
earning up to $4,000 a month
and creating $14,000,000 in
economic impact.
Working with leading corporate partners and member universities, SIFE
establishes student programs on campuses around the world. With the support
and encouragement of their faculty advisors and a local business advisory board,
SIFE students apply business concepts to develop community outreach projects
that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
SIFE teams’ projects address a variety of topics, such as market economics,
entrepreneurship, financial literacy, personal success skills, environmental
sustainability and business ethics. Rather than mandating a uniform set of
projects, teams are encouraged to work within the framework of these topics while
adapting their approach to the diverse needs of people in different communities.
The result is a program that is global in scope and purpose with the flexibility
and responsiveness of a community-based organization.
How SIFE puts business to work
The Unified Teaching Center
of Teresina SIFE team worked
with 12 disadvantaged women
in Brazil to create and launch
Chocolarte, an independent
company producing a variety
of artisan chocolates and other
sweet treats. This new venture
generated a profit in its first
year and helped the women
to increase their household
incomes by 80%.
SIFE provides university students with the opportunity to make a meaningful
contribution to their communities while also discovering their potential to
achieve an even greater impact as the business leaders of tomorrow. It’s this
balance between immediacy of results and the continual development of
effective, responsible leaders that defines the SIFE program and is essential
to creating truly sustainable change.
By using the business concepts they are learning in the classroom to help others,
SIFE students develop stronger business and leadership skills, as well as a sense of
service and responsibility to the community and world around them. They’re emerging
as leaders who understand the opportunity for business to make a positive economic,
social and environmental impact. It’s the reason so many top companies have
identified SIFE as a leading source of socially responsible business talent.
Preparing tomorrow’s leaders
The SIFE team at Shanghai
Institute of Foreign Trade
established Hongli Studio to
provide opportunities for
individuals in their community
with disabilities to become
independent and self-reliant.
The studio now employs
36 people who each receive
a share of the profits earned
by developing and marketing
handcrafted souvenir items.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of competitions that
provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, which are
evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the
regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national
champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
We believe that competition fosters innovation and encourages a focus on results.
SIFE competitions are challenging, team-oriented events that create a sense of
accountability and motivation for teams to continually improve the quality of their
projects. They also provide an opportunity for collaboration and best-practice
sharing, further strengthening the value of the learning experience and the
overall effectiveness of the program.
Recognizing and rewarding success
The University of Nottingham
SIFE team helped bring the
Crocus Café, a social enterprise
selling fair trade organic
food, back from the brink of
insolvency. With costs reduced
by half and sales up by 56%, the
Café has turned a monthly loss
of $2,600 into a monthly profit of
more than $3,000 and received
national acclaim as one of the
top ranked vegetarian cafes in
the United Kingdom.
Connections that make a difference.
SIFE represents the premier business and higher education network with more than
1,400 active universities in 44 countries and support provided by hundreds of leading
companies. This network brings together the knowledge and expertise of professional
educators and business executives to positively focus the energy and enthusiasm of
more than 30,000 university students worldwide.
The connections made possible through this network are benefiting individuals and
communities around the world while fostering an environment for personal and
professional development among the participants. In addition to the community
aspect of the program, SIFE’s leadership and career initiatives are designed to create
meaningful opportunities for learning and exchange as well as the placement
of students and alumni with companies in search of emerging talent.
The Loyola University SIFE
team in India empowered 160
tsunami-affected Dalit women to
overcome extreme poverty. The
team provided training in how
to use seashells to make jewelry
and gift items, organized the
women into a cooperative and
provided each member with a
microloan to get started. Their
income has increased from 10¢
to as much as $12 a day.

The positive power of business goes beyond the traditional
bottom line. When smart business practices are applied
toward the greater good, we can impact more than profits.
We can change lives and make the world a better place.

For Coca-Cola “Live Positively” is more than a tagline, it represents the company’s commitment to making a difference in the world by helping to build and support a sustainable business and communities where it operates. One way Coca-Cola is fulfilling this pledge is through a partnership with SIFE. This collaboration provides a means for Cola-Cola to advance its objectives as well as enhance SIFE’s work to improve lives and develop socially responsible business leaders. “Pairing with SIFE is an opportunity for one plus one to equal three,” says Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America. “We want to support the good work they are doing and we feel strongly they can help us achieve a greater impact than what we can do on our own.”
A Mutually Beneficial RelationshipStarted in 1994 with an annual donation aimed at supporting each organization’s U.S. initiatives, the Coca-Cola and SIFE collaboration has since grown to reach across worldwide borders. The company and its bottler associates act as mentors to university teams and serve as judges at regional and national competitions in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America. Today Coca-Cola actively leverages this partnership throughout its global operations to help achieve its corporate social responsibility, employee engagement and hiring goals. “We have built our brand around inspiring optimism and being part of uplifting moments and SIFE is one more way we are accomplishing these ideals and goals every day,” says Douglas. Now one of SIFE’s largest global supporters, the company sponsors the SIFE World Cup, training conferences and special competitions, as well as regional and national competitions. Leadership at Coke is quick to point out that not only are these events and competitions good causes to support to foster the next generation of business leaders, they are a natural platform for the company to achieve its objectives.
Collaboration Helps Target EffortsWanting to address specific needs and coordinate social investments in Africa, the company established a targeted partnership through The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation. In 2007 the company committed to a three-year $1.3 million sponsorship of SIFE Entrepreneurship competitions in Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Swaziland, Tunisia and Zimbabwe. More than 120 teams from across these countries have created more than $300,000 in new economic opportunities in Africa, which directly aligns with Coca-Cola’s business philosophy and their Foundation’s mission to invest in areas with stagnant economies, a lack of employment opportunities and abject poverty. Due to the enormous impact of these teams’ efforts in their local communities, in 2010 The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation renewed the grant for another year. “Together with SIFE we have impacted the lives of thousands across Africa, which really demonstrates the idea of creating a better world through the positive power of business,” says William Asiko, TCCAF president. “We are pleased to be aligned with such a well-run company that supports social responsibility and integrity.”
We see that with SIFE we can do more good together than separately and that is important to Coke.” – Sandy Douglas Jr., president Coca-Cola North America

An Inspired WorkforceFor Coca-Cola, SIFE is also a vehicle for the company to engage its employees and involve them in a worthwhile cause. Top Coke executives participate with SIFE, including Sandy Douglas, president of Coca-Cola North America, who serves on the Executive Committee of SIFE Worldwide Board of Directors. Also serving on the SIFE Worldwide Board of Directors from Coca-Cola is Dave Pollard, VP of Sales Walmart, Coca-Cola Enterprises; William Asiko, president of The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation; and Julie Hamilton, president of Global Walmart Group for Coca-Cola. The company is active in judging at SIFE competitions, sending 15 judges to Atlanta Regional where the company is headquartered in the U.S., and to competitions in the United Kingdom and China. Members of Coke participate as judges at SIFE World Cup and many employees are also active as members of SIFE team Business Advisory Boards. “The first time our employees went to judge a SIFE event it was because they were asked, now they want to go and they consider it a great use of their time,” says Hamilton.
Maximizing the Partnership PotentialTapping into SIFE’s global network of company supporters also provides an opportunity for Coke to connect with potential customers and partners. SIFE events and competitions bring together some of the world’s top business leaders and it is through this global network of company supporters that Coke also is able to interact with other businesses that have similar values. “SIFE has really cornered the market on business networking. I would tell any company looking to make connections while doing something positive at the same time to be a part of SIFE,” says Hamilton. In addition, the company is now using this network to identify future talent for their company. “Working with SIFE has created a robust bridge to our customers, associates and local communities as well as our future employees and leaders,” says Douglas.
The Bottom LineSIFE remains a fundamental partner to Coke as it continues its focus on initiatives that protect the environment, conserve resources and enhance economic development. By strategically advancing and strengthening their partnership, Coke is supporting a global organization with common goals and fulfilling its business and philanthropic priorities. “For Coke, SIFE helps us work and live so sustainability and positive change is part of everything we do,” says Douglas.

Over the course of two decades, the relationship between KPMG and SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) has evolved into a truly global one. More than 300 KPMG executives are engaged with SIFE in 30 countries where KPMG leaders mentor, support and judge teams. Managing partners have become board members and, in some cases, chair country operations.
“Teaming with SIFE has been successful because it is an institutional commitment, not just the interest of a few,” says Shaun Kelly, Vice-Chair-Tax, KPMG LLP in the U.S. and member of SIFE’s executive committee. “Our involvement is solidly ingrained in our people and our firm. In the U.S. when we look at opportunities such as SIFE, we make deliberate decisions based on answers to a few key questions:
1. Is it going to make the world better? 2. Will it inspire our people? 3. Does it make business sense?
“SIFE clearly meets all three criteria. SIFE helps the community while it helps students become leaders. It gives us a great vehicle to involve our people as board members and judges, and it makes business sense, giving us access to talented students. Furthermore, it offers a great opportunity to engage with a global network of exceptional companies.”
A Global Cause “Working with SIFE is the right thing to do,” says Bernie Milano, KPMG USA Foundation President, who serves on SIFE’s board of directors and executive committee. “The organization is aligned with our foundation’s focus on better preparing college students for the workplace. SIFE teaches project management, presentation skills and teamwork while doing something valuable for the community. The firm supports SIFE because its goals are consistent with our core values. SIFE allows us to support the students as they engage in their communities. I don’t know any other organization that combines those virtues with a global presence.”
Drawing on its significant international presence via its network member firms and its worldwide reputation, KPMG has played a vital role in expanding SIFE’s global network over the past ten years. “We believed people outside the U.S. could also benefit from the SIFE experience,” says Shaun. KPMG’s global network of member firms came together to provide leadership instrumental to SIFE’s worldwide expansion and helped introduce the first SIFE World Cup in 2001.
“Our global leadership team not only saw the good our teams were doing in their communities; they also recognized the opportunities that SIFE would provide to create relationships with senior executives of major corporations who shared a passion

for a meaningful cause,” says Lord Michael Hastings, Global Head of Citizenship and Diversity, KPMG. “In addition to the participation of our partners and executives worldwide who support our SIFE involvement, KPMG is proud to sponsor several major events/initiatives.”
Those initiatives include: • The final judges’ dinner at the SIFE USA National Competition where business leaders spend an entire day solidly engaged with the students and their business peers. • Acting as global sponsor for the SIFE World Cup • SIFE in KWorld (Global Intranet) • Leadership Development weekend in the U.K. • KPMG’s Business Ethics Grant in India • Full time regional resources in several countries
Today, KPMG is involved from the local team level all the way to the country-wide level. The organization supports visa applications and processing for SIFE teams to travel internationally and acts as official scorer for a number of national competitions as well as the SIFE World Cup, helping to ensure transparent and objective scoring. SIFE is invited to key meetings such as the International Partners’ Meeting, where leading practices are shared, and KPMG offers valuable introductions to help SIFE expand into new countries.
Talent with a Global Mindset“SIFE is an important component of our talent recruitment, with at least 40 SIFE alumni currently employed by KPMG in the United States, and many internationally,” says Shaun. “The students are the kind of committed, caring people we look to hire, and SIFE offers us terrific access throughout the world. You can only learn so much about someone by reading a resume. SIFE competitions allow us to see potential hires in action, which enables us to get a clear idea of their capabilities.”
“We are passionate about our commitment with SIFE to the development of the next generation of world business leaders and the global community as a whole,” agrees Lord Hastings. “People who are involved with SIFE are thoughtful, effective, entrepreneurial individuals who know how to work collaboratively and have a global mindset.”
The Bottom Line“I’d say to anyone considering working with SIFE that you have to be serious about the commitment and have clear objectives,” says Shaun. “Once you understand the value proposition SIFE has for your organization, get as many of the right people involved as possible. It’s a relationship that will serve as a constant reminder of the good that can result from the positive power of business.”
