THE OPPONENT THROUGH THE EYES OF AN EMAD

Last year Moscow head coach John Sheaff led the Moscow Bears to a 4-5 record. He was in his fourth year as head coach and, according to many, he had the team on track boasting a 21-13 overall

record during his tenure. Many were looking forward to the momentum he was building and hoping the Bears would make it to the postseason this year – something they have not accomplished since 1997. But Coach Sheaff moved to Wyoming over the summer, leaving the Moscow Bears without a head coach. The Bears hired Phil Helbing, a 2006 graduate of Moscow High School. Helbing had served as an assistant under Coach Sheaff for the past three years.

Coming into tonight’s game against Sandpoint (1-5), the Moscow Bears have yet to win a game, losing in non-conference matches Grangeville, Clarkston, West Valley, Pullman and Lewiston.

Key players for the Moscow Bears this season include senior running back Hunter Redinger, who was named the 4A Inland Empire League’s Newcomer of the Year in 2011 as a junior. He joins another key player, senior Brady

Braun at running back. Other players who are instrumental for Moscow include senior defensive back Kyle Snyder and Bo Olmstead, a senior who plays both on the offensive and defensive lines.

Last year marked the first time the Bears have triumphed over Sandpoint in recent memory, but in the end it was Lakeland who won the league. The Bulldogs hope to change both starting tonight.

Mc Call Miller After playing football at Sandpoint High School his freshman and sophomore years, McCall Miller decided to take a year off from the sport last year. But all that changed when Coach Puailoa came back on board. McCall had Coach

Puailoa as a physical education teacher and he saw all that excitement building to this year’s season. “I liked what was going on,” said McCall whose teammates were happy to see him rejoin the team. This year McCall is playing left tackle, but in the past he has played numerous positions including right guard, defensive end, defensive tackle and center.

He said he has enjoyed the camaraderie among his teammates this year, especially those on the offensive line. “They make it really fun,” said McCall. After graduation his plan is to attend Brigham Young University in Hawaii and major in computer science. When not playing foot-ball, McCall keeps busy helping his family with their many chores at home. They raise goats, sheep and chickens and McCall helps with building and repairing fences and getting the hay they need. McCall said he has five siblings in addition to two cousins and a grandfather who live with his family. In his spare time he enjoys working on his 1973 Yamaha motorcycle he recently purchased.

McCall said if there is one message he has for the younger players in the Sandpoint High School football program, it is a message of perseverance both on and off the field. “Put in your time now, in the weight room and in the classroom. It’ll prove to be much easier later,”

Nik FeyenFootball has always been a huge part of Nik Feyen’s life. He began playing in third grade when his family lived in Portland. He played there for two years before they moved to Sandpoint. This is his seventh year playing football in Sandpoint. He is playing left guard this year

for the Bulldogs, a position he says he has played consistently throughout the years. He is thoroughly enjoying his senior year and said he is impressed with how the entire team is really coming together. He credits this year’s coaching staff with not only coaching the young men on how to become better athletes but better all-around people. “It’s life changing because they (the coaches) teach you not just about football but about life too,” said Nik.

He said for him the past year has been all about getting healthy. With encouragement and support from the coaches, he has worked hard and learned that hard work is in fact the key to success. When asked what he enjoys most about football he said, “Hitting people. It’s fun for me.” In addition to football, Nik played baseball his junior year and was on the track team his sophomore year where he participated in shot put and discus. He said he plans to go out for track again this year.

Nik would like to pursue a football scholarship to continue playing the sport he loves. If he does not play football, he is set-ting his sights on University of Idaho or University of Washington. With a 3.65 GPA, Nik intends to major in business.“But I am really enjoying my criminology class this year so that could change,” he said. When not playing football, Nik works at Yokes Fresh Market and also enjoys weight lifting and handball. His advice to the younger players in the program is simple.“Trust the coaches and believe in what they say,” said Nik “They’re smart.”

Todd paysSenior Todd Pays has been a fixture on the Sandpoint High School Bulldogs since his freshman year. Prior to then he had not played the sport, but it is clear he quickly excelled. He started out playing left tackle his freshman year, but moved

to his current position of right guard his junior year when he started playing at the varsity level. He says he enjoys the feeling he gets when the Bulldogs score because he knows he contributed to that. “I love the highs and lows of the game and the way that everyone has each other’s back,” said Todd.

Todd also said he admires Coach Puailoa for not only coaching the team, but for bringing the team closer together. “Under Coach Puailoa, the idea of brotherhood has really been talked about with football,” said Todd. “He knows the importance of trusting each other.”Given the opportunity, Todd would like to continue to play football in college. He said Boise State or the University of Idaho would be his dream colleges for which to play.

His favorite class in high school is anything in the field of science. He says he loves to know how things work and would like to major in the field of engineering. In addition to football, Todd has thrown shot-put and discus for the Bulldog track team since his freshman year. During his freshman year he also played on the basketball team, but decided to concentrate on football and track the other years. When not studying, playing football or participating in track, Todd said he likes to be outside, working on projects and building things. “Last summer my brother (Tim) and I built a dunk tank for a surprise birthday party,” said Todd. He said he believes this year’s Bulldog team has a chance at going to state and said he especially looks forward to the playoffs. His advice to the younger players in the SHS football program is to buy into the philosophy taught by Coach Puailoa and his staff. “Be the best you can be and stay in the weight room.”

Tim Pays Tim Pays, like his twin brother Todd, began playing football when he was a fresh-man. He has played the entire four years for Sandpoint High School and plays right tackle for the offensive line, a position he has played the entire time. In

addition to right tackle, Tim used to play defensive end. Tim says he especially enjoys the team aspect of football. He said the effort he and his teammates put forth all week, is worth it when they take the field each Friday night. “There is something about football that is so much more than a sport. You share blood, sweat and tears with your teammates,” said Tim who adds that the team has grown incredibly close under the new coaching staff this year.

Tim said he would like to play college ball and cites either Boise State or the University of Idaho as a team for which he would like to play. Tim would like to major in engineering but says that plan is not set in stone. “I still need to give it more thought,” he said. Football is not the only sport where Tim can be found playing for the Bulldogs. He played basketball his freshman and sophomore years and has played baseball since freshman year. An honor roll student, Tim says his favorite subjects are math and science. “They are my best subjects and I enjoy them,” he said. “In my spare time, I like to build things with my brother at my house,” said Tim. “These things vary from wooden trebuchets (a type of catapult) to dunk tanks.” He said he has enjoyed watching his team grow and become a close brotherhood and family. “It has been coming together,” said Tim. “I am excited the way it is going.”

He reflects on how quickly the time goes when he relates his words of wisdom to younger players in the football program. “Your senior year comes so incredibly fast,” reflects Tim. “Get in the weight room early on, listen to your coaches, and work your butts off because it will be over before you know it.”

They lift weights, hit hard and look mean. But don’t let that exterior fool you. Off the field these young football players are sensitive and caring young

men who have done much to make the lives of others a little brighter. When Sandpoint High School junior Austin Diercks arrives at Kinderhaven, a local group home and emergency shelter for abused and neglected children, the young kids run to greet him and notify the teenagers that he is there. “They tell them that the cooking guy is here,” said Austin. It was this past summer when Austin decided to use his talent to give back to his community in a very unique way. Austin’s dad, Duke, is a remarkable chef and has passed on the love of the trade to Austin.

“I learned (to cook) from my dad and he learned from his mom,” said Austin. “These kids do not have parents to learn from and cooking is a skill most people take for granted.” Austin goes to Kinderhaven each week and meets with the teens that live there. He saves his receipts from the grocery store, sharing with them tips on how to shop economically, reviewing the newspaper ads for the best deals for their money. His lesson in cooking includes how to cook on a fixed income and he also addresses nutrition in his message. “I tell them that the specials at the store should inspire what they make,” said Austin, adding that many of these kids will leave Kinderhaven at the age of 18 and have a limited amount of income. “I also instruct them that it is less expensive to cook than to go out to eat.”

Austin is a tutor and has a talent and love for teaching. That, coupled with his love of kids and cooking, seemed like a perfect fit. He said the teens are excited to learn and when the class is complete he will have them prepare a meal on their own from start to finish and present them with a cer-tificate. Each week he prepares enough to feed not only the children living at Kinderhaven, but the staff as well. Eating and sharing with these kids has given the youth at Kinderhaven another person with whom they can share a bond. Austin said the stories he hears give him a great appreciation for what he has in life. He credits his dad for

being what he says is the backbone of the project, supplying him with the skill and recipes. But it is not only the children at Kinderhaven who benefit from Austin’s work as a volun-teer, he does as well. “I have a purpose teaching them and helping them with their lives,” he said.

Other SHS football players who have done a great deal to help provide care for others are freshman Alex Feyen and his brother senior Nik Feyen. The pair, along with their

older brother Edo, spent much of their time taking care of their Grandma over the past several years. She passed away earlier this year, but prior to that “Grandma Betty” – as many of the kids in the community knew her as – lived with their family. She suffered from dementia and as time went on she could not be left alone due to safety issues.

Nik said while it was sad to see his grand-mother’s health decline, he is grateful for the opportunity he had to help take care of her and be a part of her everyday life.“The last couple months (of her life) I realized we had made a big difference in her life,” said Nik. “There were times when she was much more aware than other times and it was then she would thank us for not leaving her alone.”

He calls the experience a gift and made him realize how quickly life can change. And while he did a lot for his grandma

during the time she lived with them, he credits his younger brother Alex for taking on a lot of the responsibility. “My parents wanted to come to our (his and his older brother’s) games and events,” said Nik. “So Alex had to stay home and take care of Grandma Betty.” Looking back, Alex too said he was blessed to spend that time with his grandma.

“Some nights were really easy and other times were hard because she would be confused and ask a lot of questions,” said Alex. “But I am very glad I had the opportunity to help take care of her. I am very lucky I had her living with us the last four years of her life because not every kid has that opportunity.” Alex said the experience taught him patience. But looking back, although some times were very challeng-ing, he would not trade a single minute.
