Please place your order of commitment with Clarence Kirby, High Priest and Prophet at 816-506-2126. Once again Ararat will be the sole distributor of onions for our jurisdiction. This year we will be selling jumbo onions. As in the past the onions will come in 10-lb bags. Delivery is ex- pected around the first week of May. S omeday soon, we’re going to hold a thing we call a “Ceremonial.” That’s an event that we hold to create new Nobles. It’s a pretty impressive thing, and more of us old No- bles should attend. We all went through a Cer- emonial, and I don’t know of anyone that was ever hurt, although some us might have been embarrassed just a little bit. All of us met men who would become close friends for the rest of our lives. Personally, I made friends that I have never met, and I’ve never met a Shriner who was not my friend. I’ve met Shriners in some strange places and in some strange situations. I’ve met Shriners in tuxedos, in cowboy boots and shirts, and in ragged jeans and tee shirts. I’ve met a lot of Shriners on the phone, and a few on the ham radio. I even met one Shriner standing beside me, wearing a police uniform. I’ve never met a Shriner that wasn’t my friend. All this friendship starts at a Ceremonial. Some of that friendship and brotherhood grows to the point of family, and some of it will con- tinue even after the Black Camel takes us away. Ceremonials usually start the night be- fore the Ceremonial; in a party we call a “Pub Crawl.” It was once called a “Candidate’s Re- ception, but we loosened up just a bit. Now we meet outside, in our backyard, and we have a party. Most of our units and clubs serve up some snacks and maybe a libation of some sort. And we get our first shot at making friends. That’s when we meet these new friends and their La- dies. Then we all try to show that “my group has more fun than that other bunch.” When we are all tired and ready for sleep, we eventually go home and get ready for the Ceremonial. Saturday morning, we show up at the Tem- ple, all ready for the official business of creat- ing new Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. First, we register the Candidates, so we will know the new Nobles’ names. Then, we will lead them into an interview with Nobles representing the various units who will try to convince them that their unit has more fun or eats better food than any other unit. They will also explain the differenc- es between units and clubs. Then we will have lunch. Our Ladies will take the Candidates’ La- dies to the Ladies Luncheon and there they will make new friends and learn about the Shrine. Eventually, we will begin the serious busi- ness of creating new Nobles. You should be there when the Ceremonial begins. Your pres- ence will give the Novices a more memorable experience, and it will remind you of the obli- gations that you accepted and the benefits and joys of Shrine membership. In my experience, the Novices will be pretty absorbed in the Ritual, but when they look around, three hundred fezzes behind them will make them more aware of the brotherhood of the Shrine. They will also learn that we old guys take our obligations seriously. We experienced Nobles might learn, or re-learn, something, too. Soon, the Ritual Cast will have completed its task, and the Director’s Staff will inject their brand of fun and frivolity into the Ceremonial experience. The stuff the Director’s Staff does with, or to, the new Nobles is not intended to ridicule them in any way, it is simply intended to add some relaxation to the day. After a short break, the Arch Presentation will give the new Nobles insight into the mean- ing of Shrinedom. This is another experience not to be missed by Nobles of all ages and experi- ence levels. It is truly impressive. The conclusion of the Arch Presentation marks the time for friendship and brotherhood. It is the time to place fezzes on the heads of new Nobles, shake their hands, and answer their questions. It is time to make them feel welcome. It is time strengthen the bonds of our fraternity. It’s time to be pleased with our fraternity. 2012 PARADE SCHEDULE Don Pittier, Director • 913-620-9957 DATE LINE-UP TIME / PARADE TIME LOCATION April 14-15 ..................................................................... Someday soon, we’re going to hold a thing we call a “Ceremonial.” That’s an event that we hold to create new Nobles. It’s a

pretty impressive thing, and more of us old No-bles should attend. We all went through a Cer-emonial, and I don’t know of anyone that was ever hurt, although some us might have been embarrassed just a little bit. All of us met men who would become close friends for the rest of our lives.

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

Hospital News

On behalf of the Ararat Shrine Hospital Committee, we want to express our thanks and ap-preciation to all the Nobles who participated in the Special Olympics event held at William Jewell College on March 13, 2012.

We know you feel, as we do, that seeing the joy on the children’s faces when they received their ribbons was the greatest reward we could have had. The organizer of the event asked us to express her appreciation to each and every one of you and hope you will be able to participate in the next Special Olympics.

Hospital System HeroesFor the month of February the following Nobles have sponsored children into the Shrine Hos-pitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting involved. It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for a child and his family.

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transpor-

tation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of February!

6 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS APRIL 2012

When is the best opportunity to be-come a Shriner? That would be THIS May 18th and 19th!!! The Illustrious

Sir has waived the initiation fee of $150 to all Master Masons wishing to join Ararat Shrine this spring. A Master Mason may join for just the 2012 dues of $150! So if you have a friend, relative or neighbor who has expressed an interest, LET THEM KNOW!

I’d like to share a story with you. Those that know me personally know I’ve been very active in my blue lodge for years. I never pass up a good opportunity to share the Shrine story. So I’ve been asking members of our lodge to join the Shrine for over 10 years. Well, this year, with the waiving of the initiation fee, I’ve had a couple members whom I’ve shared fellowship for many years, come and tell me they would like to become a Shri-ner! Nobles, don’t under estimate the power of this fee waiver. The secret to making it ef-fective is sharing the story. Try it with your grandsons, nephews, neighbors, and golf buddy. You will find success.

Speaking of sharing the Shrine experi-ence with relatives, the “Legacy Program” is

something you can share with your family. For many men, being a Shriner is a family tradition. “From one generation to the next, Shriners have enjoyed a unique brotherhood and shared in an important mission. The Shriners Legacy Program is a way to show

your pride in being a Shriner and to celebrate your part in the special brotherhood that comes from member-ship. The Shriners Legacy Program is open to any male family member* related to a Shriner, including: • Fathers • Grandfathers • Brothers • Uncles • Sons • Grandsons • Nephews • In-laws” You and your legacy will receive a special Lega-cy pin.

The Masonic Shrine Unity evening is April 30th. All Masons and significant others in the Ararat Jurisdic-tion are invited to this amaz-ing evening. Complimen-

tary hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, coffee, tea and soda pop will be provided. Ararat Shrine will present a Shrine Hospital pre-sentation and an “Arch” Production for all Masons and their guests who attend. Dress will be casual. We’re asking our Shrine members to attend, seek out the Blue Lodge with which they’re a member, and reengage their involvement in their home lodge. For any lodge needing more active members, this will be an opportunity. Feel free to wear your lodge insignia and name tags! Refresh-ments will be served from 6:30pm-7:30pm, with the presentations beginning at 7:30pm. We just ask that you call the Ararat Shrine business office, at 816-923-1975, with a count of how many you’ll have in atten-dance, by April 25, 2012, so we may pro-vide adequate refreshments.

Please remember we have a Temple Membership meeting the 4th Thursday at 7:00 pm every month. I urge all Units and Clubs to send representation. I assure you it will help your club or unit grow and Ararat as a Temple. I hope to see you there.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

8 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS APRIL 2012

To the ancient Greeks, cultivation of olives and wine defined civilization. Cultures who did not grow grapes and olives were barbarians. Scenes of wine making and more or less

decorous wine drinking decorate Greek pottery and are featured everywhere in Greek literature. The Greeks added water, usually seawater, to their wine, and then added spices and such, presum-ably to mask the taste of the seawater. The Greeks considered it most uncivilized to drink unwatered wine.

The Greek god Dionysus traveled the world, spreading wine and civilization. His followers, the bacchants, were women, usu-ally respectable housewives, who frequently engaged in mass in-toxication. In one version of this story, the king of Thebes, Pen-theus, refused to believe in the divinity of Dionysus, and dressed

up as a woman to join the crowds and spy on the revelry. But the women were drunk, and Dionysus incited them to attack Pentheus. The women tore Pentheus to pieces, believing they were hunting a mountain lion. Pentheus’ own mother tore off his head. To the Greeks, both wine and the gods could be merciless if they were mishandled. Obviously, women could also be merciless, if not treated correctly.

The image of Dionysus spreading the vine across the known world was not so far from the truth. The Greeks brought the cul-tivation of grapes and winemaking to southern Italy, from whence it spread northward, helped by trade and, later, by the vast empire of Rome. Every city that could afford wine wanted it. And most learned to make it, some very well; some perhaps not so well.

The Recorder’s Column by DAN SMoTHERS

Congratulations to the new officers of all the clubs and units of the greatest Temple in Shrinedom!

The first three months of the year have gone by extremely fast and have been an incredible learning experience for myself as well. But first I want to tell you a few things about our office staff, they are awesome! If you have not had the pleasure of meeting or working with Jerrie, Sharon or Linda they can make your lives as a Shriner easier. They can help the clubs and units with mailing notices, checking dues, paying for parties, ceremonials, petitions, helping with the new Nobles that need “stuff,” and they can also be a sounding board of what works and doesn’t work. On top of all of this they continue to do their jobs day in and day out, managing the business side of the Shrine and help with putting our award winning newspaper together each month. All of this is done professionally no matter what is going on in the Temple. They are here for the Nobility and they serve us very well. Even though I am not in the office every day I communicate and make decisions with appropriate discussions with the staff. As a former Treasurer of Ararat I will tell you that we have a great working relationship and I have complete confidence that the business side of the Shrine is always very well accounted for. With this being said the books are always available for inspection by the Nobility. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have a question or concern or stop by and let the office staff help you.

Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd called the March, 2012, meeting to order at 7:34 PM in the Frank S. Land Ballroom.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck informed the Captain of the Guard that the Potentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.

Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes reported that our Tem-ple was under a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer looked around and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order.

Oriental Guide Steve Johnson prepared the Altar. Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had

been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation. The Legion of Honor presented the colors. The assembled Nobles, led by the Chief Rabban, recited

the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. Noble Jacque Mote then led the assembled Nobles in singing the National Anthem.

Recorder Dan Smothers did not read the Minutes of the February meeting, thanks to a motion by Noble Possum Belly. He did read nine Petitions for Creation, all of which were ac-cepted by secret ballot of the Nobility. Three petitions for one Restoration, one Demit, three permanent Remissions and one temporary Remission were read, all of which were approved.

Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Treasurer’s Report, which showed that we are still solvent, but certainly not well financed. Our expenses are lower than last year, but our revenues are down slightly more.

The Restaurant Financial Report was read, showing that business was down in February compared to February of 2011, which, coupled with reduced revenue in January, lead to a defi-cit almost twice as big as in 2011.

The Greeters made a donation to the Temple General Fund.

The last members of the Chanters, which have now been dissolved, donated the entire remaining contents of their trea-sury to the Temple General Fund.

The Ole Cars Unit made a donation to the Cornerstone Fund and a matching donation to the General Find.

The Ballroom Dance Club made a donation to the

Cornerstone Fund.Profits from the Masonic Open House were donated to the

Membership Fund. The Director’s Staff made a donation to the Distressed

Nobles Fund. The Saline County Shrine Club made a donation to the

Cornerstone Fund. No visitors were registered.Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer reported that the 2012 Cir-

cus is doing quite well. He said that he is very proud of the work that everyone is doing. Noble Jim McGuire is leading the pack of individual fundraisers; and the Greeters are out in front of all the units and clubs. Noble McGuire is the first Noble to earn a 2012 Circus Jacket.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck said that the 2012 Swap Meets are on schedule, coordination with the City of Lee’s Summit is complete. The Spring Swap meet will be held on April 14 & 15, with setup on April 13.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi spoke of the Spring Ceremonial on May 19, and the Pub Crawl to be held the night before, May 18. The Patrol will sponsor a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning before the Ceremonial. We will also have Candidate Interviews at 9:00 am in the Sultan’s Lounge. There will also be free beer available after the Ceremonial.

High Priest & Prophet Clarence Kirby said that Vidalia Onions will arrive by the last week of April, and they will be Jumbo Onions. Onion delivery to jurisdictional locations will require an additional charge of $50.00 to offset the cost of transportation. Get your orders in early

Wings of Mercy Golf Tournament Chairman Mike De-Graff reminded us that the Tournament will be played on June 11 at Winterstone Golf Course. Hole sponsors and event spon-sors are needed.

Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson told us of two Divan mem-bers who work Bingo every week, and several Past Potentates who also help out regularly. He did not name names. He said that Bingo attendance is growing. He then presented Bingo profits to the General Fund and an additional $870.00 from the Bingo Players to Hospital Transportation.

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell told us that the “Green Pass”

program of free travel on Southwest Airlines has been restored. Otherwise, our air travel bill for February would have been about $9,000.00. Gasoline prices continue to rise, and van gasoline for a round trip to St Louis has reached about $115.00.

Membership Chairman Rod McGrath thanked the Ole Cars, Blue Springs Shrine Club, and Antique Auto Shrine Club for their support of the Masonic Get Togethers. On Monday, April 30, we will sponsor a Masonic and Shrine Unity Night with food, a Hospital Presentation, and an Arch Production. Noble Rod informed us that the average age of Ararat Nobles is now 68.75 years, but we now have 150 Nobles under the age of 45. As of meeting night, we have 656 unpaid Nobles.

Substituting for Parade Chairman Don Pittier, Noble Jim Runyan reminded us that our first Parades will be a volunteer parade at Missouri City and a callout at Richmond on May 5. He told us that Assistant Directors would not carry insurance stickers this year. Nobles who need stickers to drive in the pa-rades must obtain them from the Temple Business Office.

Illustrious Sir Richard told us that the Needle Guild need-ed money, and a hat, or maybe it was a bucket, was passed. Don’t know yet how much money was collected, but a lot of Nobles dug into their pockets for this cause.

Emeriti members and Past Potentates were recognized. Chaplain Loyd then gave the benediction. The meeting was adjourned at 8:53 pm.

March Temple Meeting Notesby STEvE DowDy

The March, 2012, Divan Meeting was held on Monday, March 12, in the Divan Office at Ararat Shrine. It was called to order at 7:13 p.m. by Illustrious Sir Richard

Floyd.Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the invocation.Illustrious Sir Richard announced that he would host a VIP

Reception for Potentate’s Ball visitors from other Temples from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the Quail Room before the Ball.

He also announced that Noble Jeff Quibell will donate labor and some materials to repair and upgrade the Temple computer systems.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer discussed increased activity of the Motor Corps, noting that other units are being offered op-portunities to participate in fundraising activities.

Circus fundraising is going quite well. Noble Jim McGuire is the leading individual fundraiser, and is the first Noble to earn

a Circus jacket this year. Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck told the Divan that

the Jackson County Shrine Club wants to hold a general mer-chandise Swap Meet on May 12 at the club’s facility. The Meet will focus on collectibles and other common articles. No fire-arms will be allowed. The event will raise money for the club. The request was approved.

High Priest and Prophet Clarence Kirby said that a letter covering the Vidalia Onion Sales has been sent out. Onion orders have reached 2300 bags in the first week.

Treasurer Mike Allen reported that the Temple is solvent, but cash flow is becoming troublesome. The biggest upcoming expenditure is the Imperial commitments for hospital assess-ments and per capita costs.

In subsequent discussions, the Divan decided to meet and call delinquent Nobles and solicit payment. They will also at-tempt to ascertain reasons for failure to pay.

Oriental Guide Steve Johnson discussed the Greeters up-coming Denim and Diamonds Dance. The lessons are a big suc-cess. More units should do likewise.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi wants to print flyers advertising the upcoming Ceremonial.

He also noted that Bingo needs more workers. Attendance is growing and the Greeters are encouraging members to play.

Recorder Dan Smothers discussed remission requests, resulting in approval of two permanent remissions, one tem-porary remission, and three requests requiring further inves-tigation.

Two units and five clubs have not yet submitted financial reports for 2011.

Second Ceremonial Master Randy Berry discussed the Spring Ceremonial.

Marshal Henry McDaniel said that several Nobles active in units are on the delinquent list. He also discussed the existing Mechanical Maintenance Contract with Trotter-Morton, and the Divan decided to terminate the contract.

Outer Guard Butch Pugh asked if a note regarding the delin-quent dues could be published in the newsletter. It was decided that publishing names would be an unnecessary embarrassment.

The Meeting was then called into Executive Session.

CORRECTION…We would like to thank Noble Jimmie Jones

for advising us of the following incorrect information that was reported in the March issue of the Shrine News. Please accept our apologies.

The Concert Band did not play the National Anthem at the February Temple Meeting. The song was played by Fred Harle P.P.

The pre-meeting music was not provided by the Banjo Band. The music was provided by six Ararat musicians playing Dixieland music.

Blue Springs Shrine Clubby FRED HARLE P.P.

Wow! Here it is already March and it looks as though March will come in as a lamb. Let’s hope it doesn’t plan on going out as a lion. We old timers can relate to those old sayings out of the Farmer’s Almanac, but enough of those tidbits. Let’s get down to club busi-

ness. I mean BSSC, short for Blue Springs Shrine Club. To begin with, as is usually the custom, our esteemed President Noble James Gargotta

with First Lady Gail proceeded to open our club for business by calling all members to attention and leading all of us with the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. Following our flag ceremony our Noble President next calls upon our club Chaplain Noble Donald Meinsen with Lady Roma, to lead our devotion to the one and only living true God. Next our Noble President proceeds to introduce our distinguished guests in attendance. Our number one distinguished guest was our own Illustrious Potentate of Ararat Shrine, Richard Floyd accompanied by First Lady Linda. Our Illustrious Sir was given a rousing welcome from all of us, which was a packed house at good ole BSSC. Next was our good buddy from Warsaw, Ambassador Noble Bud Higginbotham, who noted Lady Carol remained at home this evening due to being under the weather. Carol we want you to know you were missed and we hope this finds you feeling much better. It’s a long drive all the way from Warsaw for Noble Bud to be driving by himself, so all of us at BSSC wish you a speedy recovery.

Our next guest was our distinguished and versatile Membership Chairman for Ararat Shrine, Noble Rod McGrath whose very articulate gift of gab will cause you to think membership. Also in attendance was one of the most important nobles in Ararat, Ed Stowell with pretty Lady Judy. Noble Ed is our Hospital Chairman who never ceases to amaze me and everybody else by handling all the details associated with taking care of kids who need our help.

BSSC was excited to have as visitors Nobles Steven Becka, Arthur Maison and Leonard Huff. We hope that you had a good time with us and extend a hearty invitation to return to our next meet-ing.

A big welcome to our newest members Noble Richard and Lady Dorothy Conn. We wish Lady Vivian Snell a speedy recovery. We need you back with us. Remember; if you know of anyone who is feeling under the weather please give me a call at

816-228-2210 to let me know.Just to let you know what we have been doing since our last meeting, a good group from our

club journeyed to Kansas City, MO where we toured the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. You must see this magnificent structure. It will boggle your mind.

We met at Side Pockets in Blue Springs and rode the bus together. All of us really had a super fine time. You should have been there. Well, maybe next time. Here is a picture of the bunch that went.

Another fun event is planned for the club on March 11th. We will be going to the Maverick’s Hockey Game at the Independence Events Center. I am sure everyone will have a great time.

Mark your calendars for April 1st. Another Texas Hold’em Tournament is planned for this date at Side Pockets in Blue Springs beginning at 2:00 p.m.

That’s all for this time. I look forward to next time.

Ararat Needle Guildby JERRI DowDy

Thank you Amateur Radio Club Ladies for the donation of tray favors for the Shrine Chil-dren’s Hospitals. Thank you to those who have recently donated fabric. We appreciate all donations. Donations of all kinds are what help us to be able to do what we do.

We use our money to buy fabric, thread, scissors, elastic, needles, patterns, new sewing ma-chines, new sergers etc. Through the years the Needle Guild has depended on donations, both monetary and material, to continue to provide the hospitals with the items they request. With the help of outlying sewing clubs, we provide the Shriners Hospitals for Children with quilts, pillows, book bags, laundry bags, toy bags, therapy balls, favors and stuffed toys (especially Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls). We also sew lap robes, afghans, robes, pajamas, IV gowns, shorts, tops, sweat suits, pants and shirts of all sizes from 4 to Adult.

Many of our ladies have been ill and haven’t been able to attend meetings recently. We would like for you to become a member of Needle Guild. We do other things besides sew, we do embroi-dery and we stuff the Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. The hose have to be cut to stuff in the dolls. If you are interested in making articles for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and making new friends, come to a meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month (except July, Aug. & Dec.) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium. For more information, get in touch with our President, Elaine Graham at 816-524-0933. We hope to see you at a meeting soon.

Pipes and Drumsby JoHN HALL, SCRIbE

The March business meeting opened with the sound of the gavel by President Brian Thomp-son. He welcomed Past Potentate Ben Kenney, associate member Gerald Hardy, Past Poten-tate from Mirza Temple, and Mike Allen, Liaison Officer.

Membership was next on the agenda as Director Gary Mosby stated that Bob Wrede had agreed to be Mem-bership Chair. He also mentioned that Bob was eligible for Life Membership. All present agreed. Director Mosby then stated that he had received a letter of resignation from the unit from Bill Palm-er. He suggested that rather than ac-cept the resignation the Unit offer Bill Palmer an Associ-ate Membership. All present agreed.

Next, the new uniform was dis-cussed. We will be wearing the Kitch-ner uniform for the Lawrence, KS St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Be sure and check us out. The new uniform is awesome!

Director Gary Mosby stated that each year a noble that goes above and beyond the call of duty is awarded the ‘Jamie Womelduff Award’. This year that well deserved honor goes to Presi-dent Brian Thompson. Congratulations, Brian!

It was hard to top that award but I think Ben Kenney’s did just that. The Pipes and Drums have had five Potentates from their membership and two associate members were elected Po-tentates. This is a very big honor for our Unit. We have presented our Potentates with gifts such as bass drums, tenor drums, etc. This year we decided to present our Potentate for 2009 with a feather bonnet which I think surprised Illustrious Sir. First time I have seen Benny speechless! He thanked the membership for the feather bonnet and modeled it for everyone to see. (See picture)

The meeting was adjourned to the Ararat Club for refreshments enjoyed by all.If you need a piper for a special event or the band, please contact Gary Mosby at Ararat

Shrine. If you have information for the newsletter, please contact John Hall.

Spring has sprung and what a beautiful time of the year. Our Father unleashes the rebirth of all his plant life. No one can

paint a landscape like our Creator. Look around you and be amazed, it’s very therapeutic. As you plant your flower gardens and pick out those weeds so the beauty of your plants show through, do a little meditating and kick out some of that old baggage that keeps you from being the person your Creator made you for. We all need this spring cleaning and weeding. It makes us better people and better Shriners.

We thank all of our volunteers for our successful monthly fundraiser breakfasts. For $6.00 you can enjoy an all you can eat breakfast with scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, sausage, bacon, pancakes, milk, coffee, orange juice, and all the accompanying condiments on the first Saturday of every month from 7:30 am till 10:00 am. If you can lend a hand our volunteers will gladly make room for you.

Our ladies had a Rummage Sale in March that turned out to be a big successful club fund-raiser. We thank all of our ladies & friends and our guys that helped in setting up tables and racks and handling the heavier stuff to be sold. Kudos, folks.

Our Grounds Staff of Lee Weir, Bill Ham-merly, and Groundskeeper Jack Richardson have been busy sprucing up the Golf Course for your golfing pleasure. So come out and make it an enjoyable golf outing.

Remember our bar is always ready to serve your favorite libations and provide an at-mosphere of camaraderie.

Our Fun Kor opened its season with a St. Patty’s Day parade at Osage Beach. Another fine showing guys.

Our Pro Shop still needs a couple of vol-unteers that will be cashiers and tenants for 4 hours once a week during the course of the golf season. Please consider these positions and call 221-8968. Its easy stuff and we are very accom-modating.

Remember our sick and disabled when you hit your knees and a special prayer for those in harms way that serve this great nation.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

“Serving Kansas City Since 1922”

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fel-lowship.

On March 6th we had our regular meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right there beside Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM with a busy social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent meat loaf dinner with potatoes and gravy, plus several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next month we will have baked ham in honor of Easter. Come enjoy a meal with us.

Prior to dinner President Bobbie White led us in prayer and then Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thanks Gentlemen!

The Ladies with our own wonderful Bev Cunliffe-Owen running the sales had a drawing for a gift certificate from Applebee’s Restaurant. Secretary Dave Dowell was lucky enough to win the drawing and will enjoy a fine meal. Thanks Ladies for all your efforts.

President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM by introducing Chief Rabban Wayne Spen-cer. We then had a discussion regarding our float. We received the letter from Potentate Floyd authorizing us to proceed with the sale of the truck and float. Float Chairman Silvers is trying to make contact with a group that has expressed interest and we will begin advertising the sale shortly.

We will be selling onions again. If you want some to sell you may call President White to order with the club or contact Clarence Kirby yourself.

Chief Rabban Spencer then reminded us of upcoming events and gave us some excellent information on the Circus Sales Program. Thank you Sir.

We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club active and functional.

Speaking of Parades and Circus don’t forget that the uniform has changed and we are wear-ing our red shirts with navy blue pants. If you don’t have your shirt yet let us know so we can get with our Quartermaster (Ron Owen) and get one for you.

Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.

Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, April 3rd at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

The Boonslick Shrine Club Clowns and three clowns from Ararat Shrine visited Lakeview Care Center in Boonville. The residents enjoyed the clown show as well as the stuffed ani-mals and balloons they were given. The visit was made in honor of Noble Robert Bradshaw

who recently passed away and his wife Joan Bradshaw (who since has passed away). Robert was a 50+ year member of Cooper Lodge #36, Ararat Shrine, and Boonslick Shrine Club. He was a very active member. (See photo)

We are coming into another Parade season; our schedule has been set and mailed out to you. Our first parade is March 17. Now is the time to check out, shine up, and get your cycle ready for parades. Our new (to us) trailer for haul-ing the cycles is being pre-pared by Wayne Rucker; it is really looking good, you will be proud of it.

Onion sales will be coming up about the end of April. Be prepared to help sell the onions. They tell us they will be larger than last years. This is a big fund-raiser for us, be prepared to help. Get involved in your Club and our Temple.

How far will you go to have Fun?

The costs of consumer goods are parallel-ing the rising gas prices. With gas prices nationwide heading toward the $4 a gal-

lon mark, analysts expect the pocketbook pain to get worse. “Fuel prices hit retail food prices in two ways, in processing and transportation,” said Ricky Volpe, a research economist with the USDA Economic Research Service. “It’s really all along the whole food supply chain, but some commodities certainly get hit harder than others.” The Consumer Price Index shows the correlation of rising gas prices to consumer goods. Food prices increased by 4.4 percent from January 2011 to January 2012.

OK, OK! Out with the bad, in with the very good news. For the price of one gallon of gas you can drive from 5100 Ararat Drive to 5406 NE Oak Ridge Rd and you can do it in about 20 minutes. Now how is that for Good News?

What do you mean you don’t understand?

You mean nobody ever told you that if you make that trip on the third Thursday of any month and get there about 6 pm that you will have one of the most welcomed experienc-es you’ve ever had in your Shrine Life!

Well I guess it is one of the best kept secrets at Ararat. But it’s time to let everyone know what goes on there. It all started for me about three years ago. Seems this noble named Norm decided it was time to get things going again. So he took the reins of Liberty Shrine Club and started making it fun to join in. For two years he led one of the biggest growth spurts any Shrine club has ever seen. Last year Norm had it so un-der control he even let me set up in the big chair and play important.

All joking aside, for over 51 years Liberty Shrine Club has been around. While others are dwindling in numbers, Liberty Shrine Club con-tinues to add. This year under the leadership of President Ron Griep and Lady Debra there is no change to that growth. In February they dressed the tables for Valentines and made sure the chocolate and wine were a plenty. And that was just the start of what’s to come this year.

So before April 16th call President Ron or Secretary Marvin Cleveland, make reservations and spend a gallon of gas on April 19th to see the “Best Little Shriner Club at Ararat!”

It is almost infectious. Won’t you please join us in our Leawood Shrine Club’s pleasant-ries? Please bring a happy face and be of good cheer.

Warsaw Shrine Clubby CHARLES ALLCoRN, vICE PRESIDENT

What a wonderful time to live in the Truman Lake area. We are looking forward to several upcoming events. The first one to put on your cal-endar is the Warsaw Shrine Club Crappie Tournament to be held on April 28th between 7:00 am and weigh-in is 3:00 pm. This tournament will take place at Long Shoal Marina. Come early to register for this one. We are excited about this opportunity and you should be also. One

does not need to be a Shriner to fish in the tournament, so bring your old fishing buddy, child or grandchild, wife, or a prospective member. Fun is the name of this game. It is a very affordable day, with an $80 entry fee per boat (70% payback) and $10 entry fee for big fish (100% payback). How can one go wrong, and with your skill and a little luck you can go home with some extra money. There will be one place paid for each six boats entered in the tournament. The more boats entered the better the odds of winning.

Next on the agenda is the Mounted Guard Bass Tournament. This event will take place May 5th and 6th. Competitors do not need to be a Shriner for this event either. Pre-registration for this event will be on Friday May 4th from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. At 7:00 pm, a competitor’s meeting will be held to explain the tournament rules and answer any questions. This tournament will also take place at Long Shoal Marina. The first flight of boats will take off at 6:00 am Saturday and at the same time on Sunday. The weigh-in time is 3:00 pm on Saturday and 2:00 pm on Sunday. The entry fee is $230 per boat and $10 for big fish. The places that are paid will depend on the number of entries. Jack Everly, Captain of the Mounted Guard said if 300 boats entered then they would pay 30 places. The Warsaw Shrine Club is excited to share their facilities to accommodate this event. We are looking forward to meeting and visiting with the bass tournament competitors. See you in May.

Last but not least is the Warsaw Jubilee Days Parade. The town is already buzzing about this event. Adults and children alike are excited to see the Shriners and all of their parade equip-ment and attire show up for this annual event. There is nothing like Shriners bringing smiles to a parade to share with the local community. The Warsaw Shrine Club will again host a meal after the parade. I will have more news on this event in the May newsletter.

Remember to put the Warsaw Shrine Club on your calendar for these events. You are also welcome to join us for Bingo every Saturday night. We have had a large turnout for Bingo which makes our club successful and able to host events and provide contributions to the ones we are gathered to support - the Children. Until next time, good bye and be safe.

Harem Newsby JIM NoRMAN, SCRIbE

The Harem would like to welcome Vern Hilliard as a new member and also Randy Berry as our new liai-son officer for 2012. Welcome aboard!

Best wishes to Mike Anderson as he recovers from recent surgery. We look forward to your full recovery. Also condolences go out to Ray Ruark who lost his mother recently. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ruark family.

Harem member and our Illustrious Potentate Richard Floyd received quite a surprise at the January Shrine Meeting. The Harem presented Richard with an 18K gold Dancing Girl Pin. The pin also had Harem printed on it. The pin was given to him with the usual pomp and circumstance that the Harem provides. I be-lieve a good time was had by all! Richard has been a valuable member of the Harem for years and we know his tenure as our Illustrious Potentate will be very successful. Congratulations Richard!

Parade season is just around the corner! The Harem will present colors and look forward to riding in the parade at Richmond on May 5th.

Did you know the Harem was the third uniform unit to be organized in the Ararat Temple? The first mention of the Harem was in the January 6, 1915 Ararat minutes and refers to them as “Pote’s Dancing Favor-ites.” Members of the group were listed as “Fat Emma, Chief Dancer, Nemo, Zulieka, Allapozaza, Gezaztac, and Zeepoobah.” Stay tuned for future Harem history in the coming months!

Ole Carsby DICK LEwIS, SCRIbE

Our March Meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, March 5th with all officers and several members present. We were honored to have our

We were pleased to announce that by the vote of the mem-bership two new members were elected as Ole Car members, Noble Dave Johnson who owns a beautiful 1971 Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup and Noble Woody Woodward who is the owner of a beautiful 1971 Cadillac Eldo-rado Convertible. We welcome them and look forward seeing them on the parade route and other social events.

Our Director Noble Mick Owens announced that we would be participating in the Martin City St. Pat-rick’s Day parade on Saturday March 10th. Our Past Director Noble Gary Seger reported on the upcoming Auction dates Thursday, Friday and Saturday March 29th, 30th and 31st, with a driver’s meeting on Thursday morning March 29th at 9:30 am. We look forward to a full slate of drivers as in the past.

Greeter Newsby DARyL KRAUSE

“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter.”

By the time this article goes to press the Greeter’s Denim & Diamonds Dance will be in the history books. If the Country Dance Lessons are any indication of its success, then it will have been a real Barn Burner.

Linda & Boyd Williams, along with the help of Brenda & Bobby Rojas and Leann & Ian Ramage, have done an excellent job of presenting the Country Dance lessons. I have had several comments thrown my way such as:

“This is the most fun I’ve had here in five years.” “We use to have fun like this every weekend.”“How come we don’t have something like this every Friday?”As president of the Greeters, it would be easy to take credit for all of this. But truthfully the success lies in

the dedication of the three couples listed above and the others that will be making other Greeter events this year just as successful.

When writing this article I was reminded of a quote by an American academic Dr. John M Richardson Jr., “When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it hap-pen, and those who wonder what happened.”

Everyone enjoys having Fun! There is a movement in the Greeters this year to “make it happen.” I en-courage all Greeters and Non-Greeters to join the Nobles and Ladies above and get involved with Ararat again and don’t just “let it happen” without you.

For those who want to get involved in having fun and want more information about what the Greeters are doing e-mail us at [email protected]. We’ll send you info on how to get on our e-mail newsletter list and you will not “wonder what happened.”

These items, along with many others to come during 2012, are how the Greeters will move in an Active and Positive Direction to bring Fun and Friendship back to the Ararat Shrine. Which once again proves …

…“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter.”

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

FOOD & WINEBy, Steve Dowdy

Last month we talked about the labelsthat they stick on a bottle of wine. So nowyou should have a little knowledge of howto read a wine label. But that doesn’ t helpmuch unless you know something about thetaste of the wine. Some wines simply tastebetter with some foods.

Conventional wisdom has been to drinkred wines with red meat, and white wineswith “white” meat. But what to you drinkwith ham? Ham looks pink to me, but noexpert ever says you should drink pink winewith anything. That could be because“pink” is called “blush,” but I really suspectthat it’s mostly snobbery.

The most important aspect of pairingfood and wine is not color, but “body.”Delicate or lightly flavored foods work bestwith light bodied wines. Stronger, heavierfoods should be paired with medium to fullbodied wines. There are several, perhapsmany, schemes to help evaluate which winegoes with which food, but the most reliableis simply “personal taste.” But personaltaste must be developed, so let’s look for astarting point.

The old rule of red with red and whitewith white works to some degree, butthere’s a lot of room for experimentation. For one point of confusion, all red winesdon’t taste the same, and neither do allwhite wines. Sometimes this approachworks, but there might be a better way.

Another approach to pairing is to try toreflect the character of the food with thecharacter of the wine. Some fish dishes, such as broiled salmon, have a very robustflavor, and pair very well with a robustwine such as a Pinot Noir. And veal fits in

with a Sauvignon Blanc like beer with hotdogs. Maybe I should tell you that PinotNoir is a deep red and Blanc means“white.”

Don’t forget that sauces have a great dealto do with pairing because they can com -pletely change the taste and texture of thefood. Alightly flavored sauce can comple-ment a delicate wine, but a more robustsauce needs a heavier wine with more body.

Of course, this is Kansas City, and we eata lot of barbeque. Folks, I don’t know whatwine to suggest with barbecued ribs or beefbrisket. Some full-bodied, red wine with alot of character would probably be best, maybe a Pinot Noir or even a Shiraz? I’vehad some wonderful Shiraz, and I’ve hadsome that were too spicy. How aboutChampagne? White Zinfandel probablywon’t work for me, but you might like it.Go ahead and try something and don’tblame me. Tell me if it works.

The important thing about all of this is totry something, and if you don’t like it, don’tdo it again. You will probably find that agood red wine is best with steak, and a goodwhite wine is best with chicken. Chiantigoes well with most Italian dishes, andLiebfraumilch might be good with Germanfood. I don’t know any good Mexican winethat complements tamales or tacos.

The “rules” of wine drinking don’t evenqualify as suggestions these days. But theyprobably deserve more than lip service.Respect the judgment of those who havemade mistakes before you, and think abouttheir choices before you make your ownmistake. Of course, you can always spit itout and order something else.

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Entertainment was provided by Buck-E and Sir Clarence of our Clown Unit. They performed many “illusions” as Clown Buck-E called them, and it was really enjoyed by all our Ladies.

Roses were presented to our March Birthday Ladies: Veita

Anderson, Alberta McQueen and Gloria Sutton.Veita Anderson was our hostess this month.A few more things every woman should know:• When to try harder and when to walk way.• That her childhood may not have been perfect, but it’s over.• How to live alone, even if she doesn’t like it. Until next time.

Noble Russell “Rusty” Warren was born on April 11, 1928, in Inland, Nebraska, population 200. The current number of folks in Inland is 30. Like many small towns everywhere the young-

er people leave and only return to visit relatives.Rusty’s father was the Superintendent of schools in five districts

in Nebraska, so Noble Warren changed schools the same number of times. He graduated from high school in Papillion, Nebraska.

The Regents at the University of Nebraska during that period offered a scholarship, one to each high school in the state, to the Top 10% of the students. They also selected an alternate from each school, if for any reason the first chosen didn’t want to attend college there. Rusty was made the alternate, and he ended up with the scholarship. Noble Warren attended college for two years.

Although it often comes up about those who are part of the Greatest Generation leaving home to make it on their own, some made the choice out of necessity, and those who weren’t faced with those conditions left because it was the way of life during that period.

Noble Warren went to work for Watson Brothers Transportation Co. in Omaha, Nebraska as a common laborer, and worked his way up to Shop Superintendent. In 1965 Yellow Freight bought them out, and Rusty was sent to their Des Moines, Iowa facility as the Shop Superintendent. In 1967 there was a cut in the work force and he was transferred to Kansas City, Missouri. The deci-sion was made to open a Trailer Shop and Noble Warren was made the Shop Foreman.

He was able to bring some friends from Des Moines. When 1975 rolled around Rusty was sent to the General Office at I-435 and Roe where he remained until 1980, when another cut in the work force sent him back to the Trailer Shop, where he retired in 1990.

Noble Warren has been a competitive shooter for many years. He was involved with the NRA, and was the World Champion in gallery shooting in 1957. He shot trap and pistol at CSSA starting in 1984 and won that four times. Rusty won only once when shooting against Noble Bob Gomez. As the Civilian World Champion he hit 293 out of 300.

Rusty joined Blue Lodge #391 in Raytown, MO in 1975, Scottish Rite, Valley of Kansas City in the Spring of 1976, and Ararat Shrine in the Spring of 1976. After retirement he worked special events, and in 1999 began working Temple Security two days a week until 2010, when macular degeneration forced him to stop. He wears a 7000 Hour Pin. His good friend, Noble Larry Riggs, makes sure that Noble Warren attends Provost Meetings and special events where he can participate. Everyone thanks and appreciates you Larry for doing this.

Noble Warren is the proud recipient of the Forrest Kenney Award, the Distinguished Award, the Meritorious Service Award, and many Pistol shooting awards.

Noble Warren and Lady Linda have six daughters and one son, fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Rusty said and I quote, “I miss working with everyone”, and the “highlight of my time at the Temple was meeting Lady Linda.”

It has been my pleasure visiting with Noble Warren and Lady Linda. I would like to thank Noble Bill Crotty for suggesting Rusty for this month’s spotlight.Until next time, God Bless.

Grandview Shrine Club by bILL DIETZ, SCRIbE

Grandview Shrine Club members got new Potentate pins from our new Ambassador, Mike Anderson. Seen at left at our March dinner meeting, Richard Conn

took one in the forehead and was glad to get it. Mike brings a lot of PZAZZ to his job and we are glad to have him with us!

Potentate Richard Floyd’s pins are golden replicas of the Thunderbird art used by the Thunderbird District of Boy Scouts. Our Illustrious Sir was an Eagle Scout and has served the district for many years. Ararat Shriners can wear these pins and make them a treasured keepsake.

We are fresh from our March Social which was at Margarita’s in Liberty Tuesday night; we had 23 in attendance. Once again our Social Chairman, John White did a great job. It is very difficult working out places and reservations for a large group and John (with

help from Doris) does a fine job. This month’s door prize was won by Glenda Kitson, daughter of our Ambassador Lew Kitson. Our snow birds are starting to come home after their stay in Texas and there were lots of stories, mostly they could not agree on. We’re glad to have them back.

It is time to get our cars out for the season with our Annual Dust-Off next month. We will be heading to Leavenworth, KS to the Buffalo Soldier’s Museum at Ft. Leavenworth, and then having lunch somewhere on the way home. This will also serve as our April Social. Our President Gary Budzinski came up with this idea and it sounds like fun. Please get your cars road bound and help us make some more memories.

This month we want to honor one of our most beloved members of all time, Dean Ferguson who we lost to the Black Camel on January 19. No one ever did more for our club than Dean and his Lady Virginia. There are those that thought Virginia was our “Phantom Scribe” for years, if so what a great job. Dean was our Social Chairman and did such a great job which included Xmas parties and parties, but most of all both Dean and Virginia were the absolute “life of the party.” We are showing his 1955 Ford Thunderbird which was his favorite of his Thunderbird collection from his “Birds nest” as he called it.

Our Secretary-Treasurer Curt Dougherty is once again running for office in Independence, any of you living in that area please get out and vote for him.

Once again it is parade season and please let’s make a real showing this year so please join us. That is what part of owning these cars is all about. Let’s show them off.

Anyone wanting to join our group, we meet on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:30 pm. Until the next time.

Mini Model T’sby STEvEN HARGRAvE, SCRIbE

We are one month from the parade season. The summer fun will be upon us before we know it. This is the fun time for the T’s. Good friends and brothers and running amok through the streets of many towns and cities. What could be more fun? It has been a

while since we have seen several of our members. Remember we are all here and we would like to see you again. If you haven’t been to a meeting or one of the temple events with us come by and see us.

Don’t forget about the onion sales this year. While this is not strictly a Mini Model T’s func-tion it is a great fundraiser for the Temple and the unit. Besides it is a great way to meet people and get our message out to those that are not part of the Masonic order. Contact Jared Hargrave or Jamie Blackburn for more information. It all depends on when the onions can be harvested as to when we will start selling. Hopefully we will have them in before Memorial Day.

If you are planning to parade with us this year let Jared know as the insurance is due this month. Also, if you would like to be a member of the unit and parade with us let Jared or Jamie know so we can have you come by and meet the nobles, and maybe try one of the cars out at one of the parade practices. We will be at the Ceremonial Pub Crawl again this year so come by and visit with us at that time. As they say the more the merrier.

On a more sober note, we lost one of the widows of one of our long time veteran members of the Mini Model T’s. Donna Tubbesing passed away March 9th. She was the widow of Richard Tubbesing one of the Past Directors and a long time member of the Mini Model T’s.

Now is as good time as any to remind the members of our obligation to collect money for the circus. If you haven’t secured a place to collect money for the circus it would be a good time to set that up.

Araratsby FINGERS ‘82

The Ararats are well and happy for the most part. I am glad to report that our famous Director, Noble Bill Dean Sr. is now on the mend after undergoing a serious operation just last week. It seems that Noble Bill made a visit to his friendly Chiropractor for some adjustments to

make him feel better. Upon viewing the x-ray films the good Doc told Noble Bill he should take the films to his family Doc for further examination, which he did. His family Doc noted upon ex-amining the films there was an aneurism in his lower back, so he referred him to a specialist. The specialist noted the seriousness of the problem and immediately scheduled Bill for an operation. To make a long story short, Noble Bill had the operation which was successful and now he must recuperate to recapture his vim, vitality and good nature.

So, the Ararats will take a short sabbatical to get our Director back up to running speed. Until then, keep whistling that favorite happy song. We’ll be back before you know it.

That’s it for this time. See you soon.

Our Illustrious Potentate Richard Floyd-has decreed that a caravan shall be formed at the Temple for the purpose of elevating certain faith-ful Nomads to the brotherhood of the Ancient Arabic Order of the No-bles of the Mystic

Shrine. Each Noble of Ararat Shrine is urged to bring a Nomad for this class and to join this Caravan and witness these faithful Nomads as

they cross the Hot Sands of the Desert on our tradition-

al visit to the sacred city of MECCA.
