News You Can Use

It’s already May and it feels like the year is flying by. April was full exciting new things. We’ve received donations to purchase and install automatic push button door openers on our three main entrances to the

Shrine Center. Clubs, Units and individuals invested in our Shrine Cen-ter to make it easier for people to get in and out of our building. We’ve also added some digital signage inside Ararat Shrine to direct people to our restaurant, display membership information, events and other valu-able information making it easier to advertise what we have to offer at Ararat Shrine. The digital signage in the building complements the large digital bill board we’ve rented on I-435 to advertise Bingo, Shriner’s Hospital, our Restaurant and the other events available for the public to participate in. We’ve also put up directional signage to get people from our parking lot into our building. This is all part of our welcoming campaign to get the word out about Ararat Shrine and what we have to offer our community. We’ve been the best kept secret for too long and now that Shriners International is marketing our hospitals we need to take advantage of the interest this has generated. It’s time to get the word out to our local communities to build our membership, locate patients for our hospitals and to generate additional revenue opportunities. On the subject of welcoming, our Provost could us help in welcoming our members and guests to Ararat Shrine. The Provost opens/closes the building and assists people in the building throughout the day. If you have some time on your hands and you’d like to assist people and make them feel welcome at Ararat Shrine then get in touch with anyone in the Provost. I know they would appreciate the help.

Another exciting event in April was our Potentate’s Ball and what a Potentate’s Ball we had in our home, Ararat Shrine. The food prepared by our restaurant staff was exceptional, the band, BaliRoot, was excellent and most importantly the time we enjoyed with family and friends was fantastic. Everyone who participated made this a very special evening for Barbie and I and we can’t thank you enough. Special thanks goes to Illustrious Sir Maurice Camerlynck for emceeing the Ball, Jack and Toma Mote, our Chief Aides, as well as all the Potentate’s Aides who spent count-less hours planning and preparing for the Ball. A very special thanks goes out to Illustrious Sir Ron Nielsen from Tehama Shrine in Hastings, Nebraska. He surprised me by presenting my maternal grandfather’s Masonic Roll Call and my Shrine Legacy Pin. He also made arrangements for my parents, who live in Nebraska, to attend the Ball making it possible for my mother to pin my Shrine Legacy Pin on my lapel. A very special moment in time made possible by the bonds of friendship that start within Shriners International and last a lifetime.

At the Potentate’s Ball I announced the Spring Ceremonial Class Honorees. My honorees are Fritz and Connie Kingsley out of the Patrol. This outstanding couple has given a great deal of their time, energy and resources to Ararat Shrine. They always have a positive “can do” attitude backed up with hard work. Please congratulate Fritz and Connie Kingsley next time you see them at Ararat Shrine.

Now check out the rest of your Award winning Ararat Shrine News and I’ll see you at Ararat Shrine.

HOSPITAL NEWS

Hospital Van Drivers

As a Noble of Ararat Shrine you are encour-

aged to get involved with the work of our fraternity. Our Hospital Transportation Club is the tip of the spear in the effort to help our kids. We strongly encourage you to call the Hospital Transpor-tation office at (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and join the elite team of Nobles who transport our children to our St. Louis Hospital. We encourage every Noble to become a driver and to experience the life changing effect of working with the younger and the weaker. We need office work-ers and drivers so regardless of ability, all can lend a hand. We extend a BIG THANK YOU to the drivers who transported children last month!

Shriner’s Hospital St. Louis Board of Governors ReportBY WAYNE SPENCER P.P. ASSOCIATE BOARD MEMBER

Once again, I had the pleasure of attending the St Louis Shriner’s Hospital Board Meeting. It is an interesting and sometimes boisterous event. Sometimes you are frustrated with the results of something you feel passionate about and you can seem to convince the others of

the changes you want to make. Kind of like the political process we are experiencing nationally. At any rate, things get accomplished, money gets raised and the most important things are that children are given a new outlook on life with the amazing procedures performed by our Staff of Doctors and Nurses at your Hospital.

A Heads up of you are planning to visit the Hospital. There are several new security measures being put in place at the hospital. The parking lot is being secured to stop unauthorized parking by our neighbor organizations. The gate will be down and the Security Guard will ask your purpose for access to the Hospital. There will also be a place for you to secure a temporary badge once you enter the hospital. The Hospital Van Drivers will experience the same requirements. I know it seems like a hassle, but it is meant to protect our assets and our kids.

The Hospital Van Drivers meeting was held on April 18 and we had two drivers, Bert and Joel attend. The drivers were afforded a tour of the hospital if they chose. Some issues regarding patient appointments, etc., were discussed and some resolved to satisfaction and some still open for discussion. If you would like to experience a trip to St Louis, please call the Hospital Transporta-tion Office at 816 923-5429, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm and the office staff will help you get started as a Van Driver. We can use the help and it is rewarding.

We still are looking for patients. Please pick up some referral cards from the front lobby and pass them out to people who might have a need. It is a simple process and to start only takes a phone call to an 800 number. Helping children with growth issues, deformities, cleft palate and other orthopedic issues is or primary mission and one we should be proud of. Let’s make a differ-ence.

Until next time, stay safe. Remember summer is coming and kids will be out of school. Let’s make sure all safety standards are employed.

& Food WineBY STEVE DOWDY

The difference between good and bad anything depends on luck, raw materials, skill, equip-ment, and integrity. They key to getting a good wine, of any style, lies in remembering the name of the producer, merchant, or co-op whose wines you enjoy. As well as where they

were produced.Let’s look at a few of the most well-known and popular wines of the world. We’ll start with

Bordeaux, a region of France, where some of the most popular red wines are produced. The class system of French wines is quite well entrenched in Bordeaux. At the top of the pile are the aristo-crats, the big name estates of collectors and fine restaurants and may well be found in the lists of Crus Classse’s. Most of these truly taste aristocratic.

Next, there are the more workaday middle classes; a few hundred estates including some that are actually categorized as Cru Bourgeois.

Finally there’s the proletariat; the thousands of small producers whose wines might be sold under the name of their chateau, or perhaps where the vines are situated, quite simply as Bordeaux, or maybe under a regional name like Medoc or St. Emilion. The existence of these regional appel-lations reveals that large regions such as Bordeaux actually encompass a number of smaller regions which produce wines with their own characteristic style.

The climate of Bordeaux is relatively mild; certainly not as warm as California. Grapes do not ripen sufficiently to produce the 12 to 13 percent strength found in most bottles, so chaptalization (a process used to increase the alcohol content) is common. Variations in soils and a desire to make wines with complex flavors explain why wines are always blends of these regional varieties.

The tannin character of red Bordeaux comes from a combination of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, the climate, and the belief of most producers that tannin is necessary for any red wine intended to age.

If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Lost in the Desert

Recently we have encountered a large number of mail returns to the temple business office. When a noble moves and does not notify us that he has an address change he is considered ‘lost in the desert.’

If you are planning a move, please let the office know--that way your mail will follow you to your new address. With that in mind, some of our nobles have winter homes in a warmer climate. (Yes, we are jealous!) If you do have such a situation, you can alert the office of your alternate address and our computer system will automatically place the proper address on your mail for the correct time of year. We can do many things to insure you are kept current with temple events and news. So, PLEASE keep the business office advised of any changes in your contact data. This in-cludes, email, telephone, and postal address information. Don’t be lost in the desert, stay in touch!

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS!BY JAMES GARGOTTA

I want to welcome our new Nobles. Now it’s up to us to show them the Shrine way. Get them involved and show them what it means to be a Shriner. With that said, it’s also time to start recruiting new candidates for the Fall Ceremonial. We have a lot of fun events

happening this summer. These events are the perfect time to invite someone to join. Let’s show off our Ararat Shrine Center.

Shrine International has a newly initiated Shriner Spotlight Award. This will be tak-ing the place of the former Shriner of the Month Award program. Similar to the Shriner of the Month Award, the Shriner Spotlight Award honors members who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to both their fraternity and philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children®. I think it would be great to see some Ararat Nobles being recognized. I have the instructions on how to nominate someone, so just get with me.

The Membership Committee started reaching out to those Nobles that have not paid their dues and those that have been suspended in April. We have been asking our top-line signers to help in this effort and its working. We have to work together as a team on this.

Mark your calendars on July 16th, 2016 we will be honoring our Veterans with a reception from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. We plan on having some guest speakers and our Vietnam Veterans will receive a special lapel pin recognizing their service to our Country. Refreshments will be available.

I would like to reach out to those Nobles that have not attended a Membership Committee meeting. Feel free to join us at our monthly meetings. We meet the Tuesday before the Temple Meeting. Our meetings start at 7:00 pm and we are in the Truman Room.

Should you have questions concerning membership or need assistance with membership ac-tivities, feel free to reach out to any one of us. We’d be glad to help.

NOBODY TOLD ME!BY STEVE DOWDY

Once upon a time, specifically from 1844 to 1859, the masons of Missouri operated a college. It was a real college called the “Masonic College of Missouri. It was a first class institution, the first of its kind in America, and possibly the world.

The Masonic College of Missouri was started by a resolution at the Grand Lodge Communica-tion in October of 1841. It was established in 1844 near the town of Philadelphia in Marion County, then moved to Lexington in 1848. It survived until 1859, when it closed forever.

The founding resolution was submitted by S.W.B. Carnegy, P.G.M. The resolution stated that it was “necessary,” “expedient,” and “in the interest of the Grand Lodge” to establish an institution of learning for the sons of indigent Masons and others. Subsequently, it was also designated a “place of asylum for female orphans of worthy Master Masons and others.”

Perhaps the driving force behind this venture might have been effort to help recover from the bitter anti-masonic movement caused by the alleged murder of William Morgan by masons in Bata-via, NY in 1826. During that same period, it had been charged that Masons preached charity and benevolence, but did not practice what they preached. By accepting that resolution, the Grand Lodge declared that those charges could not be made in Missouri.

The first students of the college enrolled on May 12, 1844, and by the time of the Grand Lodge Communication in October, the college was in full operation. The enrollment at that time included 14 Freshmen, 1 Sophomore, and 29 in the “prep” school. It was basically a liberal arts college, with science and mathematics courses added later.

Two financial agencies were connected to the college. The Board of College Fund Commission-ers, appointed annually by the Grand Master, was responsible for the Endowment Fund. The other was the general agent of the college, also appointed annually, whose responsibility it was to solicit and collect subscriptions for endowing the institution.

In March of 1847, the college was relocated to Lexington, and the college in Marion County was closed upon termination of the current session.

The selection of Lexington was perfectly normal, since its citizens had raised $30,000 for the purchase of grounds and buildings. Probably of equal importance, Lexington was the seat of the larg-est lodge in the state. There were 62 lodges in the state, and Lafayette Lodge No. 32 had 54 members.

Masonic College at Lexington was on 6-1/2 acres about one-half mile from the courthouse square, on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The cornerstone of the college building was laid May 18, 1847, the building was dedicated on July11, 1848, and the college opened in October of that year.

The main building was 81 feet long, 52 feet wide and 38 feet from the floor to the eaves. It was a brick building, with four stately, fluted columns on the front. In the center of the front of the building, near the eave, is the letter “G,” flanked by a sprig of Acacia on each side.

Life and activity among the college students and faculty was in line with the times. The Masonic College had few graduates, the requirements for graduation being too strict for a long roll of Gradu-ates. However, those few grads were outstanding in the communities, and were known as knowledge-able gentlemen.

The Masonic College of Missouri was never a financial success. But, if not for the uncertain conditions of the pre-Civil War period, the College likely would have overcome its financial problems. But that period was not one in which to overcome such handicaps.

A 40% scale replica of the original Masonic College building, which served as Union headquar-ters during the battle of Lexington, sits on the original site in Lexington, Missouri. (from www.midnightfreemasons.org)

Illustrious Sir Steve Johnson called the April, 2016, meeting to order at 7:34 pm, April 13,

2016, in Bennett Auditorium. Our Ararat Jazz Band played for our enjoy-

ment before the Call to Order.Assistant Rabban Henry McDaniel in-

formed the Captain of the Guard that the Po-tentate was about to open Ararat Temple for business. That done, Captain of the Guard Bud Higginbotham informed the Outer Guard, and then reported to Noble Henry, who informed Ill. Sir Steve that the Temple was under a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Randy Berry then surveyed the crowd and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. Ill. Sir Steve said “Tis well.”

Oriental Guide Jim Kerns prepared the Al-tar.

Chaplain Patrick Moore remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Cam-el and gave the invocation.

The Patrol, accompanied by the Jazz Band, presented the colors.

The assembled Nobles, led by Chief Rab-ban Randy, recited the Shrine Pledge of Alle-giance, and then Noble Jack Mote led the Nobil-ity in singing the National Anthem.

Captain of the Guard Bud Higginbotham announced an alarm at the outer door.

The Potentate suspended the meeting, and representatives of the Casbah Darlin’s, the Ladies of the Oriental Band, were escorted to the podium. The Ladies presented a check for $500.00 to the Parking Lot Fund. Then, Cas-bah President Jerri Dowdy challenged the as-sembled to match their donation. The Nobility

responded nobly and not only met the challenge, but exceeded the Casbah Darlin’s generosity by $10.00!

A second visitor was announced and the Executive Director of the Kansas Shrine Bowl, Lady Sarah Van Petten, was escorted to the po-dium. She told us the story of the Kansas Bowl, a celebration and high-school All-Star football game; which has raised over $2,500,000 to the benefit of our hospitals. This year, the game will be held in Emporia, KS, on July 30, 2016.

The meeting was reconvened. In accordance with a previously passed

Motion, the Minutes of the March meeting were not read.

Membership Chairman Jim Gargotta moved to the Podium, mounted a small box which al-lowed him to tower over the podium, and told us about the Spring Ceremonial on May 14. It was followed by our traditional Pub Crawl and Unit & Club Display. There was also a Chance to Advance class on May 7 in Boonville, MO. He also presented a generous donation from the Lee’s Summit Track & Field Club to the Mem-bership Committee.

Recorder Mike Wheeler was called upon and read four Petitions for Creation, which were accepted by secret ballot of the assembled No-bility. There were no Petitions for Affiliation or Association. There were six Petitions for Resto-ration, no Demits, and three Petitions for Perma-nent Remission.

Treasurer Nick Baldi gave the Treasurers Report. All accounts are healthy. The Hospital Transportation fund is in great shape. The Gen-eral Fund revenues were well above expenses for the month of March, our Investment Funds are strong. The Restaurant, Cornerstone Fund and Hospital Transportation Fund showed a loss

for the Month of March. The Circus Fund is do-ing well.

The Directors Staff presented a generous contribution to the Accessible Door Fund.

The Circus Fund is some-what ahead of last year at this time. Assistant Rabban Henry presented a whole jug of coins to the Circus Fund! The idea being we all have spare change and this is a great way to accumu-late some fairly significant funds the circus could put to good use.

Assistant Rabban Henry reported that the Swap Meet appears to have been successful,

although the numbers are not yet available.

High Priest & Prophet Butch Pugh reported that our supply of Vidalia Onions is in the ground and growing. They were expected to ship on April 25 and should have been received at Ararat about the second weekend of May.

Warsaw will be June 22. This year will mark the 50th year for this event. We will have a parade, and Warsaw Shrine Club will provide food and host a dance.

Treasurer Nick Baldi reminded us that the Sportsman’s Event will be held at Ararat on Au-gust 6, 2016. Tickets will be available soon, and your Unit or Club will get a $3.00 commission on each ticket sold.

Bingo Chairman Larry Adolphsen told us that Bingo was successful in March. Bingo was able to donate $5,000 to the General Fund from the committee, and the players donated $925! Help from the Nobility is still very much needed.

Hospital Representative Ill. Sir Wayne Spencer reported that the St. Louis Hospital is doing fine, and the staff is excited. Financially, the Hospital Transportation Fund had some money at the first of March; then they spent some money, and made some money. Now, they still have some money! Our drivers are learning about our new van and they seem to think that it’s pretty nice. There will be Wings of Mercy Golf Tournament at Hillcrest Country Club for the benefit of the Hospital Transportation Fund Coming up soon.

Director Ian Ramage announced that we have a new Smoking Shelter and the new handi-cap accessible doors are close, but not quite fully funded. The Restaurant just needs a few more customers.

Director of Uniformed Units Ron Knold talked about the upcoming 2016 Parades, start-ing with May 7 at Missouri City and Richmond. The Marshall Parade, always a good one, is May 21. The Temple will be closed on May 30 in rec-ognition of Memorial Day.

Noble Tut McAfee presented a medal from the 1981 Imperial Session in New Orleans to Il-lustrious Sir Fred Harle, whose name was on the medal. Noble Tut found the medal in a second-hand shop, and nobody seems to know how it got there. Illustrious Sir Fred was deeply moved by the kind gesture.

The Jackson County Shrine Club will spon-sor a Battle of Rock & Roll Bands on July 23rd here at Ararat. The event will run from Noon to Midnight, with the avowed purpose of attracting young members and guests.

Noble Paul Brewer won the Half & Half drawing and donated his winnings to Circus 2016.

Chaplain Patrick Moore gave the benedic-tion.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

Ararat Ol’e CarsBY MICK OWENS, SCRIBE

Once again the Ol’e Cars unit has been visited by the black camel. Our charter member and past director, Ben Kropf lost his battle with lung cancer on April 12th. Our unit was honored to serve as pall bearers for Ben’s funeral. Margaret Barham, widow of our

passed director, Donald Barham, passed away on April 9th. Her memorial service was held on April 23rd.

The Ol’e Cars unit had it regular monthly meeting on April 4th. One new membership peti-tion was received and read for the first time. Charles Chaffee, 38 years old, made application and will have his petition read for the second time in May. Charles along with several of his family and close friends has been helping us with our fundraising by driving cars during the Mecum Collector Car Auctions for the last few years. Who would have thought that one could recruit new Shriners from the ranks of collector car drivers?

On April 11th we held our monthly dinner meeting at Side Pockets in Blue Springs, Mis-souri. Fourteen members, their ladies and widows were able to attend. An evening of good food and great fellowship was had by those that were able to attend.

Several members of the unit assisted in the recent swap meet in Lathrop, Missouri. Thanks to all that found time to help.

Several members, their Ladies, and Widows will be attending the Potentates Ball on April 23rd. We are looking forward to a night of good food, fun, and celebration with our Potentate, Steve Johnson.

Just a reminder that we meet monthly, with the exception of the month of December, at Ararat Shrine Center on the first Monday at 7:30. You can usually catch several of us in the din-ing room before the meeting enjoying a bite to eat. Feel free to stop by and see what were are up to. We are always looking for a few good men and their machines.

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! NOW TWO PROGRESSIVE GAMES!

Pipes and Drums

Your Ararat Shrine Pipes and Drums unit is hard at work. We are busy collecting funds for the 2016 Circus and for the Shrine Hospital Net-work and having a great time to boot!

We were honored to present a check to our Chief Rabban Randy Berry at the temple meeting in April to go towards expenses for the circus. The amount was almost $2,400 and we have every intention of adding to that amount as the year progresses.

We want to share a bit of information with the nobility. When we travel to various locations collecting funds for our charities all brother nobles in the Shrine and their la-dies are welcome to come along. It is our intention to post this information on our Facebook page so that you may travel with us and share in the fun we have. Log into facebook and search for AraratPipes AndDrums (please note the spacing) You will find us and all of our antics for your viewing pleasure!

Like all units we welcome visitors at our practices. Please feel free to stop by the Temple on Thursdays when we put our instruments through their paces.

Blue Springs Shrine ClubBY JIM GARGOTTA

We had a great meeting in April. We also had a special guest speaker, Tonya Brown, at our meeting. She shared with us her son’s story. Many of you heard her speak at the Febru-ary’s Shrine Meeting. I think we need to hear more form those that we help. It’s why

we are doing what we do. We want to extend a welcome to our new members, Noble Jerry McClary and Noble Barry

and Lady Joyce Tatum. We just keep growing. The Club went to see the DaVinci exhibit at Union Station on Apr. 17th. We had 42 people

attend the event – Wow! The exhibit was some kind of wonderful. Everyone found it interest-ing. We all came to the same conclusion, DaVinci was something else. We went to Los Corrals afterwards for food and drinks. Illustrious Potentate Steve Johnson and Lady Barbie joined us and I think they had a good time.

The first part of May saw the Club selling Onions for the Shrine and our Club. We sold 300 bags. May is also Ladies night out. Our Club Ladies will pick the restaurant we will go to for dinner too. We will not have a stated meeting in May.

It looks like we are go-ing to have to put off our an-nual picnic until later in the year, due to the Ararat Shrine schedule and other factors. However; we are going to have a mini-golf and Fun-house Pizza outing in June. If you would like to join us for this event, give me or Lady Gail a call, 816-228-2401.

Sedalia Shrine Club

Greetings from the Nobles and Ladies of the Sedalia Shrine Club. What a time to be alive and giving back a portion of what our creator has blessed us with. It really feels good to be a part of a handicapped child’s life. We all are working to be the part that makes that child

as normal or as close to normal as possible. Shriner’s and our Ladies are truly exceptional people. The Sedalia Shrine Club is in full swing. Our last dinner meeting showed the hearts of who

we are and the friends who help us help special children. Janet Cline, a representative of the Shrine Hospital in St. Louis was present and we were proud to provide donations from a variety of groups. Our friends, the Gold Wings donated $1,000.00; Ilene Webb presented $2,490.00 on behalf of the Bloody Mary Morning Crew. Shirley Wiley, Pat Rinehart and the Ladies from the Sedalia Shrine Club were able to present a check for $9,000.00 to help our Hospital Network remain strong in the service of our kids. Members of the “Widows Sons” were also present selling chances to win a beautiful quilt. To all of the faithful volunteers who made these donations possible, pat yourselves on the back. This is another hallmark achievement!

In attendance from the Temple were Captain of the Guard, Bud Higginbotham and his lady Carol along with Shrine Club Director Vern Hilliard and his lady Susan. Dave Duffer and his lady Judy attended representing Saline County Shrine Club. We are pleased to report, a good time was had by all. Again, we give out a much deserved salute and a “We Love You” to our faithful Ladies of the Sedalia Shrine Club.

Our Monthly Breakfasts are still setting records and remain a vital part of our existence. If you can volunteer time to assist on the first Saturday of the month, please contact Kenny Martin our Sedalia Shrine Club President. He will be pleased to have the help. Check your Ararat Shrine Calendar for Kenny’s contact information.

Liberty Shrine Club News

The Liberty Shrine Club’s last meeting fell on St. Patrick’s Day, so of course, a St. Patty’s Day affair! After our Irish blessing and the green beer was gone, we held a costume contest. The VFW bar staff chose our favorite “lassie”, Francis Lingrel (with the big hat in the pic-

ture); wife of our am-bassador Ray Lingrel as the winner. The first place prize was a bottle of Leprechaun Wine and glasses. Our din-ner was fantastic and included Corned Beef and Cabbage, Shep-herd’s Pie and a won-derful Irish dessert, Oatmeal Apple Crisp. After dinner, Irish cof-fee was had by all! Before we adjourned for the night, our fifty/fifty drawing was held. Janet “I never win anything” Kinder had the magical ticket which won our Pot of Gold containing 25 Missouri scratcher tickets! At press time, she had won several free tickets and a few dollars with tickets still to scratch!

The Liberty Shrine Club meets on the third Thursday of the Month at VFW 5606 in Kansas City north. Social hour starts at 6PM and dinner at 7PM. Come join the fun at the Liberty Shrine Club.

Lafayette County Shrine ClubBY RON ELLING, SCRIBE

The Lafayette County Shrine Club meeting was held April 14th at the Higginsville Masonic Lodge. Delmar Dothage led our group in blessing the meal which included barbequed chicken, cheesy potatoes, barbeque baked beans, corn and cherry poke cake and brownies prepared by

Bernie Miller, Jack Padley and Pat Edwards of the Higginsville Masonic Lodge and the Shrine Club Ladies. President Dothage welcomed Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman and his Lady Linda, Ambassador Alvin Kallenberger, Deon Williams, president of Richmond Shrine Club, and Nobles and their Ladies of the Lafayette County Shrine Club. The cooks including mem-bers of the Higginsville Masonic Lodge and the Shrine Club were thanked for the wonderful meal!

President Dothage presided at the meeting. W.N. Gray gave the devotional. W.N. Gray read the March minutes. They were approved as read. Bernie Miller gave the treasurer’s report. The treasurer report was approved by the members.

The Swap meet was discussed as being rather cold that weekend for those that helped with the event. President Dothage had new Ararat shirts that he and his Lady Sharon had purchased. Lady Sharon showed both a polo style and a button down style. Orders for shirts were being taken. An “onion” head cap was given to Ron Elling in preparation for the onion sales. Other members selling onions will be given caps as well. Onions should be delivered around the first part of May.

Deon Williams from the Richmond Shrine Club announced their upcoming Golf Tournament and about the joint meeting with RaKla, Lafayette and Richmond Shrine Clubs to be held June 1st. A donation was made to the Richmond Shrine Club to help cover the costs of the evening. Crown jewel awards will be given out that night. He also shared that the Richmond Shrine Club went to the Ararat Temple for their last meeting and had a wonderful meal!

Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman shared parade information about the two parades on May 7th in Missouri City and Richmond and the one to be held in Marshall on May 21st.

Our Illustrious Potentate Steve Johnson has decreed that a caravan shall be formed at the Temple for the purpose of elevating certain faith-ful Nomads to the brotherhood of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Each Noble of Ararat

Shrine is urged to bring a Nomad for this class and to join this Caravan and witness these faith-ful Nomads as they cross the Hot Sands of the

Desert on our traditional visit to the sacred city of MECCA.
