In1942DonaldFriendenlistingwiththeAIF,waspostedasagunnertotheartilleryunitnearAlbury.In1945,hewasselectedforappointmentasofficialwarartist.HetravelledtoMorotai,LabuanandBalikpapan,recordingsightswhichconfrontedhimanddrawinginparticularontheexpressivepotentialofhumanform.Friendwasextraordinarilyprolific,producing53paintingsand143drawingsfortheMemorial.InAugust1945hetravelledtoBalikpapaninBorneo.TheArmyandRAAFlivedamongsttheruinsofBalikpapan.Thisworkdepictsanumberofmeninaprimitiveshowermadebetweenwreckedwallsandburntwood.On13AugustinhisDiaryFriendnoted'Anotherdull,cool,greyday.Iworkedonapictureofboysintheshowersanexcuseforthepleasureofdrawingnudes'.
