NAI HARN to Freedom Bay

NAI HARN8 miles from Ao Chalong

A

The most favoured anchorage on the west coast in the high

season, holding can be found in 8-10 metres virtually anywhere

in the bay. The surf can make dinghy landings exciting early and

late in the season. This southwest facing beach is particularly

attractive, with Puravana Phuket Yacht Club, a 5-star resort of

considerable fame, perched on the north side of the bay. The

evening view from the hotel’s deck is unbeatable.

Naiharn is one of the favourite gathering points for cruising

yachts over Christmas and there are a few local style beach

restaurants. Phuket Town is 45 minutes away by taxi or bus.

JUNGLE BEACH8 miles from Ao Chalong

There is secure anchorage in 10 metres either in front of

a boutique resort or just to the east in front of a smaller

bungalow resort. The access road passes underneath the

The Club Med covers about 60 percent of the beach, from the

northern headland. Outside guests are not catered for.

On the south side is Kata Beach Resort, a 400-plus room

hotel, host to the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta since 1998. This

4-star resort is the largest of many reasonably priced resorts

here. On the road behind the hotel frontage are numerous

restaurants, bars and shops within easy walking distance.

Beside it is The Boathouse, a long-time favourite of the

yachting community. Its owner and designer, ML Tri

Devakul, was one of the King’s Cup Regatta founders. The

Boathouse calls itself ‘a restaurant with a few rooms attached’.

Reservations are a ‘must’ in high season. The wine cellar is

excellent, with upwards of 250 labels. Passing yachts may

replenish wine supplies at retail, not restaurant prices.

Diving and snorkelling around Koh Pu (Crab Island) is good.

A note of caution, however: the passage between Koh Pu and

the headland is not recommended without local knowledge;

there is a rock awash in the channel.

completed by a gangplank, which doubles as a swimming ladder and a walkway onto the quay.

The cockpit also includes an access door to the engine room and a second exit door. The dinette in the bows is another new feature, which when combined with the highly versatile, modular sundeck that also has a bimini top, creates a clever solution off ering owners perfect privacy. This is the ideal place for enjoying breakfast in complete peace, when the boat is moored at the stern.

Below decks, the large L-shaped galley is completely separated from the night zone and equipped with a dinette and a tempered glass top, stowaway table. This is a modern, comfortable and discreet environment with a complete range of hi-tech Bosch appliances including a twin door refrigerator, a dishwasher with a capacity for 12-place settings, an oven and a microwave.

The crew quarters consist of two comfortable cabins, a bathroom and utility room.

The night zone in both of the three cabin versions (the other option has a dinette instead of the second central guest cabin) and the four cabin version, is an outstanding example of comfort and design. The unique open-view window in the master cabin, situated in the centre of the boat, is remarkably light and airy and features an opening porthole set into the glass.

The area is full of refi ned details, like the stowaway vanity cabinet top with built-in jewellery box, the king-size bedhead, the bulwark fi nishings, ceiling panelling and handrail. The bathroom on the starboard wall is separated from the rest of the cabin by an elegant, translucent, sliding, satin-fi nish glass and aluminium partition. Inside the basin is a special stowaway, sliding mirror. All these features add up to the ultimate experience of luxury at sea.

The smoothly sleek exterior design of this new model is slimmer, more streamlined and more aggressive than its predecessor, and has windows which are particularly long and graceful, bringing more natural light to the interiors.

The Pershing 80 has been specifi cally designed to off er owners sporty high performance. On the standard version, two powerful 2030 mhp MTU engines combine with two ZF SeaRex 140S surface propellers to guarantee a peak speed of 43 knots. A faster version with two 2435 mhp MTU engines off ers an incredible top speed of 50 knots at one third loaded displacement. Some performance for a craft of this size!

The craft’s internal layout also reveals a series of refi ned features designed exclusively by Poltrona Frau, one of the world’s best known leather furniture manufacturers. The pilot house is a real gem, from the dashboard to the central driver and two co-pilot seats, all in sumptuous leather.

Elegant slide-away glass partitions include two separate sections with an electro-hydraulic drive mechanism that slides the sections to a central module, which then drops into the fl oor. This design solution provides the option of closing the cockpit off from the upper saloon, or joining the two environments together, to create a huge and harmonious open space that is all on the same level. There are no steps or obstructions to disturb the smooth fl ow of the fl oor. The extendable-retractable hard top with its special twin electrical drive is another outstanding feature of this new design.

On entering from the stern there’s a large L-shaped sofa on the starboard side, and a smaller unit is located in the centre. This has been designed so it can slide easily across to the other couch to create a vast horseshoe-shaped settee. In the centre there are also two large pouff es that can be put together to make a chaise longue, or joined with the sofas to create a single huge relaxation area.

A retractable fl at TV screen is positioned on the port wall and a separate dining area has been created towards the stern. This includes a dining table accompanied by a series of wall-mounted cupboards for storing dinnerware. All the fi ttings are in open-pore oak, and fl ooring is wengè parquet.

The spacious cockpit has three sofas upholstered in a waterproof fabric, a cocktail cabinet with a built-in sink, a teak table and a barbecue. The layout is designed to facilitate socialising onboard, with the central area of the sundeck, transforming into a spacious lunch table. The top surface can be lifted, by an electrically operated telescopic support, while the bench slides manually on a concealed guide system.

The stern sundeck is completely separate from the door to the spacious garage, so that guests who are relaxing in the sun are never disturbed. The garage is also fi tted with a special section of fl oor that can be lowered to facilitate the launch and docking of the RXP Sea Doo jetski and the Williams 325 jet tender. These facilities are

The Pershing 80The Pershing 80, brainchild of yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni, brings sleek style and advanced onboard technology to

Asia with its fi rst showing at PIMEX 2010. This new model continues the strategy of luxury begun with the Pershing 72,

TAX FREE GROWTH OF FUNDS

The underlying investment funds linked to a bond are owned by the

life insurance company. All income and capital gains which the funds

generate are reinvested into units. Many such instruments are based in

the Isle of Man or Guernsey (the world-leading jurisdictions for off shore

insurance) and therefore don’t pay tax on income or capital gains.

TAX DEFERRAL

Because income and gains grow free of tax, the policyholder can

defer any tax liability on their capital until the benefi ts are taken. In

most countries, bonds are considered non-income producing.

TIME APPORTIONMENT RELIEF

This means that tax can be reduced proportionately for time spent

as a non-resident and additional investments are always deemed to

be made at the initial investment date, even if made when resident

again. Regular investments are treated the same.

How it works:

The A/B Rule. A = Number of

days spent in UK. B = Number

of days policy has been

established.

For example: Mr. Jones has

a policy worth £200,000

and his gain is £100,000. He

started this plan when he was

off shore 10,000 days ago, and

he returned to the UK 1,000

days ago.

Calculation: 1000/10,000 x

100 = 10%. Therefore, 90% of

the policy can be encashed in

the UK with no tax liability.

The types of off shore bonds (sometimes referred to as professional portfolio bonds) are varied

and off er diff erent advantages to investors to match their individual requirements.

OFFSHORE BONDS

TAX EFFICIENT ACCESS TO CAPITAL VIA WITHDRAWALS

In the UK, an amount equal to fi ve per cent of the premium paid can

be taken each year, for a maximum of 20 years, without incurring an

immediate income tax liability. With portfolio bonds, this avoids the

necessity of selling units to obtain an income.

INVESTMENT CHOICE

A bond off ers the ability to restructure and change investment

policy within the bond, without changing the investment vehicle.

BETTER TERMS

As an institutional investor, life offi ces can generally obtain better

discounts/terms from investment houses than an individual and

these savings are passed on to the policyholders. For example, if an

individual were to buy units in a fi delity fund, then he’d pay a 5%

bid/off er spread, but this could be reduced to as little as 0.25%, if

purchased via a bond.

INVESTOR PROTECTION/PEACE OF MIND

In the unlikely event that a company should go into liquidation,

the Isle of Man Life Assurance (Compensation of Policyholders)

Regulations Act 1991 covers up to 90% of an insurer’s liability to the

policyholder. The same applies for moneys held in Guernsey, as all

investments there have to be held by a secure third party custodian.

There’s no upper limit to the amount of compensation that can

be paid. This makes the Isle of Man and Guernsey two of the best

regulated international fi nance centres in the world.

CGT FREE SWITCHES

By actively managing a portfolio of funds the investor can switch

between funds without incurring any tax liability. Normally, if

investments are held directly, any disposals incur a capital gains tax

liability.

ADMINISTRATIVE CONVENIENCE

Regular valuations keep the investor informed about the progress of

the bond via a comprehensive statement detailing all transactions

Feature Feature: Off shore Bonds

and the value of funds held. Centralising assets based in diff erent

countries under a bond wrapper may be attractive, as on death

this would only involve obtaining Manx or Guernsey Probate.

A professional administration service performs all transactions,

relieving the client of the burden of time-consuming paperwork.

TRUSTEE INVESTMENTS

Off shore bonds are ideal trustee investments as they’re non-income

producing and off er true tax deferral and little administration burden

to trustees. We’ve several trust solutions for our potential clients.

POLICY ASSIGNMENT

It’s also possible to change the policy ownership, by assignment. In

general, the new policy owner can then surrender the policy, and

any tax liability will fall on him. If the new owner is a non-tax paying

spouse, she can off set her unused personal allowances against

any gains and pay less tax. This is also very useful for university fees

funding.

NON RESIDENCE RELIEF – UK EXPATS

Any periods of non-residence will be relieved of income tax on fi nal

encashment. Top-slicing relief may be used for any periods of UK

residence if the tax payer is within the basic rate tax band. This may

save 18% tax on any chargeable amounts.

CGT V INCOME TAX

Until recently, it has been a feature of UK tax law that individuals

who made capital gains were not liable for CGT, if the gain was

realised while they were ‘non-UK resident’ or ‘ordinarily non-resident’.

Clause 127 of the Finance Act 1998 changed that position. Under

the new rules, individuals who have been UK resident for at least four

out of the previous seven tax years prior to the tax year of departure

will continue to be liable for UK CGT, on disposals they make whilst

non-resident, if they return to the UK within fi ve years. The new rules

apply to individuals who leave the UK after 17th March 1998 and

apply to assets they held prior to their departure. If the individual is

UK domiciled, the charge would be on worldwide assets.

An alternative, and potentially much safer approach, would be to

contribute to investments which are not subject to CGT i.e. off shore

regular and single premium life assurance policies. They’re fully

portable, as the investor moves from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In

most countries, no tax charge arises until the benefi ts are taken.

About Chef John

Chef John (Keattisak Engchuan) was born in Krabi province on the 10th of April 1972. He

has two brothers and one sister. He completed his high school education in his home town

and moved to Phuket in 1990 to pursue a career in the hotel business.

At fi rst he did not have a plan to become a chef, although he enjoyed cooking and several

of his fi rst jobs were as an assistant in the kitchen where he slowly learned his cooking skills

from his employers. Over the last 20 years Chef John has worked in a variety of diff erent

locations and with a variety of cuisines. His passion for using fresh ingredients and local

produce has helped him to develop a style which is neither pretentious nor complicated.

Working with chefs from many diff erent schools, Chef John has learnt to keep it simple, with

a focus on quality and traditional Italian recipes, rather than trying to develop new dishes

which may not represent the true taste of Italy.

Chef John is now the executive chef of the Italian restaurant DaVinci in Nai Harn, which is

fast becoming the place to eat on the south of the island.

'Location, location, location' as the saying goes. It doesn’t matter how

good you are, if you’re not in the right location, forget it.

Baan Rim Pa has become one of Thailand’s best-known restaurants, with

a reputation stretching much further. It is perched on a cliff , with teak

fl oors and the constant swish of the surf ‘downstairs’. There are some

restaurants that just encapsulate the word ‘romantic’ and here, with

Tommy Doyle playing classics on his grand piano, the sea breeze and the

delicate aromas of world-class cooking in the air, this House by the Sea is

one of the most romantic places to eat in Phuket.

Situated on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the Andaman Sea, Baan Rim Pa

prides itself in superb, authentic Royal Thai Cuisine, an ambience second

to none and the most spectacular views on the island. Baan Rim Pa is

the winner of the prestigious Wine Spectator Award of Excellence seven

Patong Seafood International

Take a journey into the home of real Thai food! Patong Seafood Restaurant

was the fi rst seafood restaurant to open in the then village-like Patong. It

has changed very little from those days except for a major refurbishment

after the 2004 tsunami in which major damage was sustained.

The restaurant was rebuilt as it was in original Thai style with open

dining area and a high circular design ceiling. Only the freshest seafood

is brought straight from the boat and market to give you the fi nest

selections, which are on display – chilled and ready to eat. The kitchens at

Patong Seafood Restaurant are a place to behold, where their chefs with

simply so many years of experience, prepare your seafood and other Thai

delicacies to perfection.

The fi rst thing that you will notice are the friendly staff . The smiles, the

attentiveness and the helpfulness in making your choice are something

you will appreciate and you will then know why many visitors and locals

come back time and time again to enjoy this real taste of Thailand.

You must miss your daughters, them being so far away? Yes, I only see

them once a year.

What do you do in your spare time? I like swimming. I also like reading

either novels or books about Buddhism. I think as you get older you get

closer to religion. I’m keen to learn more.

So where do you see Phuket heading from here? Phuket is a very well

developed and world-renowned destination. There’s so much for tourists

to do. There are still some problems ’though. The public transport system

is vestigial – certainly, it’s not good enough to serve tourists. I’d like to

see Phuket with some train transport. There’s been talk of a monorail link

between Phuket Town and the airport.

I’d also like to see us attracting more business in the low season maybe by

targeting domestic tourism and visitors from neighbouring Asian countries.

This will increase and balance revenue streams.

Anything else? Yes. I’d like to see the proposed convention centre project

completed. We need more MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, events)

business here on Phuket.

What about problems such as the bad publicity over jet-ski operators?

The governor has tried very hard to solve this problem with insurance coverage.

So, do you enjoy your job? Yes. It’s a good experience for me. It’s

challenging. In the USA I had to learn about American tourists. Here I have to

learn about European and Asians and try and bring that understanding to the

market. It’s a very challenging job, but fun.

Do you have time for shopping? Yes, I go shopping at Central.

Where did you start your TAT career? I started 20 years ago in Bangkok as a

researcher mainly studying the impact of tourism from countries such as the

United States, Europe and Japan on the Thai economy. I then moved into the

Tourism Development Division overseeing destinational tourism projects in

Thailand.

What sort of projects? Well, for example, I was project manager for the

building of the Ao Chalong Pier. Then I moved to the tourism investment

department, taking care of asset management. One was a golf course that

the TAT owned and managed.

What was your last posting before coming to Phuket? I was in the

marketing division of TAT in New York USA, working with tour operators

and others to encourage Americans to come to Thailand. I liked New York,

especially the food! New York never sleeps, you know. I learned a lot in the

four years I was there – that was from 2005 to 2009.

So you came straight to this job from New York? I had some time in

Bangkok, then to Phuket.

What made you enter the tourism industry after training as an

economist? I got my Master of Economics degree at Thammasat University,

writing a thesis entitled ‘The international Tourist Flow to Thailand’. That was

the starting point. The model studied the decision making process that

tourists go through when they are thinking of visiting Thailand.

What did you fi nd infl uenced tourists? At that time the impact of high oil

prices was a major factor. That was the pivotal for many people.

Are you pleased to be in Phuket? This job is a good opportunity for me. It’s

a challenging position. It’s the biggest provincial offi ce of TAT. Phuket is the

‘number one’ tourist destination in the kingdom. We’ve over 5 million tourists

a year, almost 4 million of them from overseas.

So how are you working to increase this number? We work closely with the

private sector – the Phuket Tourist Association and the Thai Hotel Association

– to grow the potential off shore market. Next year, for example, we’re going to

target Hong Kong by bringing a group of their agents and partners here.

What nationalities do you see as having the most potential for growth?

Australians, Scandinavians, Koreans and Russians who all like to come to the

beaches. But India is also a great niche market. There’s great potential for

more Indian tourist packages built around Indian weddings. These are large

and can go on for up to four days.

Do you see 2009 being a better year for tourists to Phuket than 2008? Yes.

The predictions are that the overall total may be less than 15 million for Thailand.

For Phuket we may get 5.5 million visitors, but not 6 million. Nevertheless,

compared to other destinations, Phuket’s numbers are holding up well.

What do you think about the development of the marine leisure tourism

and yachting industry? Phuket has high potential in marine leisure tourism

especially yachting due to its suitable location and well-developed facilities .

From Phuket tourists can cruise to explore various interesting places as

Similan Islands Surin Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi Islands, etc. There are

also many high standard yacht marinas in Phuket. Yachting is the main target

group for next year.

Do you have a family? Yes, I’m married with two daughters, aged 21 and 19,

both studying in the United States. The elder is interested in economics like

me but the younger is studying psychology. My husband works in Bangkok

for the Ministry of Commerce.

Phuket Butterfl y Garden & Insect World was founded by Dr. Prasit

Koysiripong in February 1990 and was originally called 'Phuket Butterfl y

and Aquarium’. Along the way, the emphasis concentrated on the insect

world and the aquarium lost out!

A butterfl y garden is very much an observatory, where you’re free

to wander in their natural habitat. Here you can learn more about

the miraculous miniature world of insects, butterfl ies and moths.

Incidentally, the main diff erence between butterfl ies and moths is

that the former are active during the day and the latter, after dark.

Butterfl ies normally rest with their wings fl at, moths with their wings

vertical. Moths tend to be less bright but many have intricate, intaglio

patterns on the wings. They’ve both adopted similar survival strategies.

Some will have camoufl aged colouring so that they merge into the

surroundings of their preferred foliage, others are vividly painted to tell

possible predators that they’re dangerous and probably not good to

eat. Their life cycle is quite complicated. They lay eggs – usually on the

underside of leaves, which hatch out into larvae, commonly known

as caterpillars. These feed on foliage and gardeners will often kill any

caterpillar they encounter, before it eats their prize hydrangeas for

lunch. Some are as brightly coloured as the butterfl ies they’ll become

and some types have toxic hairs which can cause a nasty rash if you

touch them. Those who survive the attentions of gardeners, birds and

other natural enemies go into a hibernation stage forming a pupa,

a woven, protective enclosure or cocoon called a chrysalis, which

suspends from a leaf or branch. After a period which varies from

species to species, the pupa will transform and a fully formed butterfl y

will emerge to decorate our gardens and delight us.

Feature Feature: Phuket Butterfl y Garden and Insect World

Before entering the butterfl y garden, visit the insect exhibition which

features an abundance of insect species. Explore the wonderful lives

of these small creatures. See collections of beetles, bees, wasps,

grasshoppers, termites and ants. Listen to the musical crickets and

cicadas and view insects such as arachnids, scorpions, and giant

millipedes – from a safe distance.

There’s also a video about the amazing transformation from egg to

caterpillar to butterfl y.

The garden covers an area of 1,350 square metres and holds more

than 40 species. Walk in among the beautiful fl owers and marvel at the

thousands of butterfl ies fi lling the air, busy seeking pollen or nectar

among the tropical blooms. Some may be courting! Did you know

that female butterfl ies secrete hormonal perfumes called pheromones

which drive the males mad with desire?

There’s also a small silk museum displaying silk cocoons, traditional

weaving equipment and some lovely examples of silk cloth.

After your tour, pay a visit to the shop, which has a good collection of

butterfl y crafts and Thai artifacts – ideal mementos of your visit and

presents to take back home to friends and family. Then there’s a café

which serves hot and cold drinks and snacks where you can relax after

your botanical exertions.

Whilst the garden is designed to encourage the public to learn about

these amazing, delightful and colourful creatures it also incorporates a

butterfl ies in the garden are bred on site. They also conduct breeding

programmes for indigenous species which may be endangered by

the on-going commercial development on the island. These are bred

in captivity and then released back into the wilds to preserve nature’s

ecological balance. You can help too. Next time you fi nd a caterpillar in

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes

massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method

to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the

American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in

Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties

of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular

Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for

mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils,

face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife

Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into

a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care

products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top

resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is

never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened

to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are

enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your

choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia,

Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his

hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and

cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made

from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile

extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good

idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and

feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can

be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-

blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E

enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and

has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best

of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a

selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where

you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect

gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the

privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

The Royal Spa and Health ClubIn the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace.

With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and

stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly

interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses

black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a

profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market

themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but

professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as

tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff ,

and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal

Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house

'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa

training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of

therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then,

the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided

comprehensive and professional spa management, and development

programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a

standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure

a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It

truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My

fi rst feeling when I stepped through

the impressive gates of the Sukko spa

was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are

dressed beautifully in traditional Thai

style and the spa design, infl uenced by

the ancient Siamese capital, creates a

haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I

had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background

music, my mind was fi lled with a

peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the

warm traditional welcome (again from

Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating

Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where

the idea is to fl oat away past stresses

and wish for luck and joy from that

moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist

and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages

lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can

be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal

recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are

totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the

herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your

treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that

left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began

with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric

Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub

was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but

fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist

asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses

that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the

Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face

feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Sukko Spa’s restaurant, Suk Savoey Spa Cuisine, presents a unique concept:

"Menu by Blood Types" and "Menu by Element". For those who want to

exercise, the Suk Sanan Club provides a myriad of fi tness opportunities,

including ‘Rue Sri Dat Ton’ (the hermit self

stretching), a traditional Thai exercise or, for

something more strenuous, try ‘Muay Thai

Chaiya’, a traditional and eff ective art of self-

defense. Parents who come to Sukko to relax

can leave their kids at Suk Zon Kid's Club,

where they will enjoy with a variety of fun yet

safe activities.

Sukko Spa, one of Phuket’s most luxurious spas,

is located on Chaofa Road just 30 minutes from

Phuket International Airport, 10 minutes from

Phuket Town, 30 minutes from Kata or Karon

is creatively designed in a contemporary Thai

Great for cleaning the pores and clearing the mind. Then out of the steam

into the warm Jacuzzi for two, sipping a cool ginger tea while nature’s healing

power eases away aches and stress.

Already beginning to relax, I moved on to the Swasana Salt Scrub, the spa’s

signature body treatment. My 2 therapists started with a gentle scrub, using

tropical salt and tamarind to remove the dead skin cells, leaving my skin feeling

smooth and silky.

Gearing up the sense of total relaxation, and gearing down even further my

stress levels, I next experienced the signature massage – a combination of

Lomi-Lomi and Aromatherapy techniques and principles. Lomi Lomi, also called

‘Loving Hands’, derives from ancient Polynesian massage using long continuous,

fl owing strokes to get deeply into tired muscles. Aromatherapy, using essential

oils to stimulate or relax, is the perfect complement. While my therapists’ hands

worked their magic on my body, I felt I had

left all my worldly cares and tension behind.

By now in sensory heaven, the Sawasana

angels prepared me for a Rejuvenating

Anti-Stress Facial. A blend of facial massage

with natural creams, this treatment cleansed

and rejuvenated my skin and facial muscles.

With all my senses heightened, I detected

the fragrance of guava fruit – good enough

to eat, but alas just one of the natural

ingredients in the creams my therapist was

using. This one is a must for anyone thinking

of having a ‘face lift’!

Swasana SpaWhether you’re suff ering the stress of working in Phuket’s super-heated commercial environment, or you’re visiting from overseas for

a slice of tropical relaxation, Swasana Spa’s warm welcome from their gracious staff is a great way to start.

Okay, from time to time, we all have complaints about airlines, airports and

all things aviation. This is usually based on our own experiences, a bad in-

fl ight meal, the galley running out of booze, having to climb over someone

to get to the toilet or rude and indiff erent staff .

But stop complaining. It could be worse. You could be relying on service from

a national carrier operated by any of the following countries: North Korea,

Sudan, Afghanistan, Cambodia or Rwanda. All of these airlines are banned

from fl ying into the European Union because of doubts about their safety.

Then throw in carriers from Angola, Benin, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon,

Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan (a landlocked country in Central Asia),

Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Swaziland and Zambia to name but a

few. In fact, a total of 228 companies are banned. This makes for a pretty sorry

picture. Maybe Thailand isn’t so bad after all.

Of course almost all of these countries are in Africa and none, apart from

Siem Reap Airways International from Cambodia, fl y into Thailand and then

only into Bangkok and not Phuket. Also, of course, the European Union ban

is a bit academic for most of the airlines aff ected since they don’t have routes

into Europe anyway.

What the ban does underscore, however, is how important safety

considerations are to the airline industry. This year, three new countries were

added to the list of banned airlines – the African countries of Djibouti, the

Republic of Congo and Sao Tome and Principe.

Thailand is not entirely without a history of such bans either. At one stage a

couple of Thai airlines were grounded because of safety concerns. However,

Asia, with the exception of Cambodia and some airlines in Indonesia, has

been improving its record compared to Africa, the former Soviet states and

some Middle Eastern countries.

At least the countries mentioned here have airports. Imagine living in a

country where there is no airport! Well there are fi ve of them. Leading the

way is the Vatican City, which is plum in the centre of Rome. Then there’s

Monaco, but it does, however, have a heliport for all those billionaires to drop

by. Liechtenstein, likewise. Its nearest airport is Zurich in Switzerland. Andorra

near Spain is the largest country not to have a facility. Its nearest airports are

Girona in Barcelona and Toulouse in France. Finally there’s tiny San Marino in

Italy, which also boasts only a heliport.

So it just goes to show that you can run a country successfully without an

airport. Of course, Phuket’s tourist industry would be severely constrained

without our airport and to be fair it’s a facility which is improving customer

service and facilities virtually every month. We’re getting a VIP air terminal, a

single-engine aircraft strip and, yes, you guessed it, we now have a helipad (not

a heliport) about three to four kilometres south of the airport. Of course Phuket

also has its own mobile helipads, those on the larger super yachts that moor off

places like the Amanpuri Resort in Surin during the high season.

Finally, Phuket Airport is looking to welcome its sixth millionth visitor. It just

missed out last year because of the airport closure and other political unrest

in Thailand.

However, Phuket Airport has a long way to go before it matches the busiest

airport in Asia, Beijing Capital International, with a throughput of almost 37

million people from January to July this year.

Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok was the busiest airport in the region, handling 22

million passengers over the same period. This, in fact represented a drop of

9.4% over the same period last year. This was the biggest drop ‘year-on-year’

for any international facility in Asia. Suvarnabhumi has certainly had more

than it’s fair share of problems. Let’s hope that there are no more airport

occupations, as any interruptions in service impact adversely on Phuket – the

vast majority of visitors to the island still pass through Bangkok en route.

Beach. 12 boutique villas at The Hermitage are set over 9 rai or 14,400 sqm

and majestically designed with the advantages of an elevated hillside, off er

magnifi cent ocean views fast becoming rare on the island.

Our acclaimed architect team has embraced a contemporary Thai style design

for each villa with the utmost care and attention given to providing a natural

feel. Each of the custom built villas is built on handsome plot sizes ranging from

500 to 1,100 sqm with spacious living area of 600 to 800 sqm. and a price range

starting from 72 million baht. The project theme is environmentally friendly,

created to capture the benefi ts from the site’s lush greenery. The residence

will be surrounded by nature preserved at its most beautiful and original

condition. To give ultra luxurious feels and comfort, a private swimming pool,

spa area and grand terracing come with the villa as standard. Residents can

enjoy stunning sea view from every room in their own piece of paradise.

A highlighted feature, not found in any other project, is a natural landscaped

waterfall within the complex communal green area. The centerpiece of The

Hermitage is a magnifi cent 3 storey (800 sqm) clubhouse. A chauff eured golf

buggy transports you from the parking area at ground level to the villas at all

levels of the site.

Opulent architecture is the signature of the clubhouse with high beamed

columns and full glass windows maximizing the spectacular sea views. A wide

range of facilities are available including a glass elevator, a lobby lounge, a

spacious indoor/outdoor international restaurant, ‘sunset’ bar, a fully equipped

fi tness centre and a traditional Thai health spa set over two fl oors with

sumptuous sea views. A separate outdoor spa sits adjacent to the clubhouse

in its own private waterfall garden to aff ord residents the ultimate luxury living

amid a serene and tranquil environment.

Only the fi nest quality local and imported materials are used in the construction

with teak wood and marble prominent throughout. Every villa features fully

folding teakwood doors and intricate carvings on the teakwood facades

inlaid with gold and silver. All villas are equipped with the latest in modern

technology, including fully automated control over all electrical systems such

as lighting, music and security. At The Hermitage, we understand the value of

peace of mind and as such, the site is protected by 24 hour on-site security

and CCTV.

The Hermitage is an extraordinary project – absolutely one of a kind, “An Oasis

of Nature and Seclusion”.

Things to do in PhuketFor those who come to Thailand seeking relaxation,

Phuket with its pristine beaches and fantastic range

of restaurants and hotels, has plenty to off er. For

those who would seek more active pursuits, there’s

also lots of choice. Here’s a selection.

Whitewater Rafting:

All these activities are organised on the mainland in the Phang Nga area. The

journey from Phuket takes just an hour by road. Be sure to bring a change of

clothes because you’re guaranteed to get wet.

Upon arrival you’re instructed to place all your valuables in one of the

secure lockers before being whisked away for a short briefi ng and safety

talk. A qualifi ed instructor will guide you in fl uent English through the dos

and don’ts of whitewater rafting, before issuing you with life jackets and

protective helmets.

The organisers often include an elephant ride as part of the package. Treks

last for about half-an-hour and the beasts can carry three people, plus the

mahout. A word of warning: the trip involves lots of swaying and bumping. Exploring virgin rain forest was never going to be easy.

Whitewater rafting in Phang Nga is available all year round. For further information

visit www.phangnga-rafting.com or call +66 (0)76 246284, +66 (0)76 244940.

Explore the island:There are many companies who off er island tours and these are a convenient

and inexpensive way of seeing more of your holiday destination. However, if

you’ve the time, why not rent a motorcycle or car and do a little exploring on

your own. Your hotel or tour guide will be able to give you a road map, but

you can’t really get lost. This is an island, so if you keep going you’ll eventually

get back where you started! Follow the winding coast roads and discover

isolated beaches, which you can have all to yourself. Head inland and visit

small farming communities where people still live in much the same way as

they have for hundreds of years.

Please remember that you must wear a crash helmet

when riding a motorcycle. For those of you who are

visiting from Europe or the Americas, please also note

that we drive on the left here!

Motorcycle rentals start at 150 baht per day and small

jeeps are available from 1,000 baht per day. If you rent for a

week or longer you may be able to negotiate a better rate.

Phuket Aquarium:Whether you confi ne yourself

to a walk along the beach

or engage in swimming,

snorkeling and scuba diving,

there’s no doubt that marine

related activities are one of the

prime attractions for visitors to

Phuket.

For those who are inclined to

do their research in a more

leisurely style or who would

like to know more about

Phuket’s surrounding waters

and its marine life, the Phuket

Aquarium is the answer.

The aquarium, which is also

a marine life research centre, is located right on the tip of Cape Panwa and

is a 13 kilometre drive from Phuket City. There’s a local bus service to the

aquarium, which leaves Ranong Road daily from 9am to 3pm every hour.

A very high percentage of people who travel to Phuket will at some

stage get a dose of the trots. Generally it’s not because the food

and drinks are unclean, it’s because their bodies are not used to the

bacteria and other bugs that they try to digest.

Whilst it isn’t a pleasant experience at the best of times, for tourists,

getting gastro during your long anticipated holiday is not fun.

The trots can be mild or severe and are normally associated with nausea,

vomiting, watery or loose stools, abdominal pain and weakness. Infants

and the elderly are more at risk of serious complications particularly

dehydration. As our body loses more and more fl uid from both ends, we

get thirstier and thirstier to the point that we feel we can’t keep any fl uids

within our body.

When we ingest a bacteria or virus that our body doesn’t like possibly

from drinking tainted water, eating unhygienic food or not washing our

hands following contamination, our gastric and immune systems go into

overdrive. The cramp we feel is our stomach and intestines constricting

It’s known variously as Bali Belly, the Tokyo Trots

or the Rangoon Runs. More commonly it’s called

travellers’ diarrhea or if you’re in the medical

profession, gastroenteritis. Literally, this means

inflammation of the stomach and intestines, or

in short, ‘gastro’.

and relaxing to expel the contaminated bugs as quickly as possible. The

watery stool is the result of our body’s attempts to dilute the bugs with

fl uid from our circulatory and other body systems. The vomiting? Well,

it’s the quickest way to clean out the stomach. If your body doesn’t like

what you’ve put into it, it will get rid of it. The problem is that sometimes

it doesn’t know when to stop, and we keep dry retching, further adding

to the pain and misery.

Unless you’re seriously dehydrated or have blood in your stool, a dose

of the trots can be good for you, as your immune system will develop

immunity to the newly introduced bugs and will be able to fi ght the

next invasion. That’s why longer term residents of Thailand don’t get

aff ected as frequently as newcomers. They’ve become immune.

It’s better to let nature take its course. I don’t recommend that you dive for

the medicine cabinet each and every time you get a dose. Taking Imodium

type medication will slow down the speed of your gut and will allow you

to venture further away from the toilet, but it’s defeating the purpose.

Taking antibiotics will also kill the bacteria in your gut, the bad ones and the

good ones that your body needs to digest food. Most cases of the trots will

resolve themselves within 24 to 36 hours so unless you’re on holiday, have

important engagements or need to catch a fl ight, try to wait it out.

If you’ve indulged in the local spices and chilies, getting the trots can be

even more painful as parts of your anatomy may feel as though they’re

on fi re. Avoid using toilet paper, certainly perfumed or printed paper

which can further traumatise the delicate areas. Use water instead, and

be gentle, very gentle.

Prevention is better than cure. To avoid the problem, wash your hands

regularly, especially before meals. If you can’t peel it or cook it, consider

leaving it. This includes reheated food. Salads should be properly prepared,

using clean water. Never drink the tap water unless you’ve been here a

while and have developed a tolerance for it. It’s a sure way to get a dose.

If you have a serious bout and you’ve blood in your stool or become

dehydrated, you need medical help. You must not dehydrate, so frequent

small amounts of fl uid are needed. Drinking water and clear soft drinks

with some sugar such as 7–Up, Lemonade or Sprite are excellent as the

sugar gives you much-needed energy. Avoid milk and alcohol as these
