It was time for lunch; so I suggest-ed we have a bite at Vasken’s Deli outby Branson Mill Craft Village. I toldmy two grandchildren that I needed totalk to Rattlesnake Eddie anyway, and we’d find him at the Mill. Well, should’ve taken a photo of their facesright then. “Who?!”

That’s what everyone calls EddieWood, and you will find him and hisw i f eDebbie att h e i rC ro o k e dS k yTr a d i n gPost insidet h eB r a n s o nMill CraftVillage onN o r t hG r e t n aRoad. It isa customl e a t h e rshop … and a whole lot more.Eddie does beautiful leather-work that includes belts, guitarstraps, holster rigs, gun slings,an extensive variety of things. It’s interesting to watch himwork; and though he’s a quietperson, he enjoys talking withvisitors in his shop. He cutsquite a handsome figure in histall boots, western pants and shirt, vest, western necktie and hat. (Youcan get a start outfitting yourselfthere.) And Debbie always lookssmart in clothes with western touchesand lovely jewelry.

The shop covers a large area and isfascinating. There are traces of NativeAmerican heritage in their back-grounds and they have an enthusiasmfor products that will be treasured forgenerations. The beadwork Debbie

creates and the many other things inthe shop, like the vintage turquoisejewelry and the designer copper jewel-ry certainly will be!

Eddie’s leatherwork began duringhis rodeo days in the ‘70’s, when herode and fought bulls professionally atrodeos all over the country. And as youcan see, the kids found out he’s notscary at all! We bought souvenirs;Sydney got a necklace and Dillonscored two sweet little “bullet” knives.

And web o u g h tRattlesnakeEggs. Now,that’s amust-havesouven i r.(Be sure tokeep themin a coolplace.)

Mill is a wonderful place to browseand shop. It is 40,000 sq. ft. of retailspace with working artists andcrafters. Woodcarving, pottery, cus-tom embroidery, wonderful mosaicwork (Say hi to my friend Juanita!),handmade musical instruments and alot more in the 150 showrooms. Thenew Vasken’s Express Deli andGram’s Snack Shop (with Nathan’sHot Dogs!) and nice oak tables andchairs provide a relaxed place to gath-er. Enjoy!

The Shepherd of the Hills ...A family affair

By Linda Burlingame

Terry Sanders is a familiar facearound Branson but you may notknow him by thatname. You mightknow him as “HomerLee,” “Joan Rivers,”or any one of morethan 20 characters. AtThe Shepherd of theHills Outdoor Dramahe has two identities,“Ollie” and “Doc.”His son EvanSanders also plays“Ollie.” When Evanwas eight, he startedplaying “Little Pete.”He literally grew into

the “Ollie” role. Evan’s older broth-er Austin also assumed the “LittlePete” role at eight; Austin now doeslights and sound for the show, with

an occasional stand-in performance.Evan works in the booth, too, whennot performing.

Terry is very quick-wit-ted. While he may be work-ing from a script, each per-formance is unique and canturn on a dime! I notice thiswhen I see him as “Ollie.”During the “chat” with theaudience, he needs hisquick reactions! He plays“Ollie” six nights a weekand “Doc” one night aweek.

This show is always one of my favorites. #1 Hitsof the 60’s is high-energy and fast-paced, taking theaudience on a wonderful adventure through 60’smusic. Motown, the Britishinvasion, California Surfin’,the Age of Aquarius — quitethe musical journey. Thereare 100 costume changes. The bell-bottoms, psyche-delic colors, and hairdos! There are gorgeous gowns, too, like the black, shim-mery dresses and boas forStop! In the Name of Love.

The show is well stagedand moves at a good pace. The cast does more than 90

#1 and Top 40 songs. There’s fun audience partici-pation, too, such as the quiz: is this a 60’s song ora 50’s song?! Along with the musical history of thedecade, you see video clips showing some histori-cal, noteworthy events. You can think back to the

first moonlanding, firstheart transplant… John, Martinand Bobby.Poignant andfun, the audi-ence experi-ences everymood.

This is the11th season for#1 Hits of the60’s. I love the

high school skit they do. The “plot” is the upcom-ing school dance. Who has a date? There’s“Johnny” in his black leather jacket with the collarturned up, “Irving” with his nerdy outfit, the girls.Oh, and the “school marm!” The songs and dancestell much of the story. And you might not guesswho ends up singing Born To Be Wild! The “swim,”“locomotion” and the “mashed potato” … so manydances and songs. What a great decade!

Just think — Dance to the Music, It’s My Party,You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling, Johnny Angel, YouDon’t Have to Say You Love Me, Leavin’ on a JetPlane, songs from the Beach Boys, Joan Baez, TheRonettes, The Hollies, Chiffons, Simon &Garfunkel … The Supremes! It was an incredibleera of music; the cast truly does it justice. Thearrangements and the harmonies are excellent. Sotake a step back in time, for a rockin’ good time.Enjoy!

#1 Hits of the 60’s ...a show filled with talent and fun!

The Hamner Barber Variety Show offers songand dance, magic, comedy, ventriloquism, gorgeousbirds — a unique, tender tribute to America’sVeterans. I’m not sure the definition of “variety”covers all that. Ishould look up “vari-ety.” It may say, “SeeHamner BarberShow!”

Jim Barber andDave Hamner aremulti-talented enter-tainers. With aremarkable cast andsome fine-featheredfriends, they have afun-filled show. Jimis an expert ventrilo-

quist and clever comedian; Dave is a gifted illusion-ist. The show is exciting. Consider:

Dave waves flaming swords; two white cocka-toos fly out of the flames. Then, some brightly col-ored scarves and whoosh — a bright green and red

macaw appears to make an impres-sive flight over the audience. Davetears a newspaper into the shape of abird; you guessed it: a live birdappears. And as closely as I watch….

Now here’s Jim Barber with a“dummy” and a routine that makeshim look like the dummy. It’s “Barberand Seville!” All three sing reallywell. (Three?) I love the hilariousBaby in the Bag routine, too. AndChico Pete is adorable and hilarious.

Singers and dancers add more

excitement and variety. Denise Hamner (bird wran-gler!) makes several appearances — and disappear-ances! TheH a m n e rBarber hom-age toVeterans ise x t r a o r d i -nary. Thereare tapedi n t e r v i e w swith threesurvivors ofthe flag rais-ing at IwoJima. Their

NEW at the Jim Stafford Show ...Michael Cathcart joins the cast

By Linda Burlingame

Mike Cathcart has joined the cast of the JimStafford Show! Jim has a wonderful show that isalways evolving; it’s full of comedy, of course, andreally, really good musicianship. Jim is a world-class guitarist and likes good talent around him.

Mike, who is the son of Peggy Lennon and thelate Dick Cathcart, is an outstanding guitarist and iswell known to many Branson visitors. He was withthe Lennon Cathcart Show last year and also playedpiano and sang at Moon River Grill. Andy Williamsonce said, “Mike is the best singer I know.”

Jim and Mike do some songs together on theguitar, including Classical Gas and Malaguena.Mike says it’s “an honor to be on stage with Jim.”Mike’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ is nice, and you’ll enjoyhis original-the-way-Jimmy Webb-wrote-it versionof Galveston.

The entire show is artfully arranged, mixingmusic with comedy in a “thrill ride” of fun. Jimmakes “every-day” thingsf u n n y .S o m e t i m e syou chuckleand smile.Other timesyou laugh outloud; and, ofcourse, Jimreminds you to“let it out!”

Cow Pattiand Spidersand Snakesare just two ofJim’s popular comedy songs. The 1974 Spiders sitsin the top 50 of Billboard’s Hot 100 Country Songs,

along with the hits of Elvis, Glen Campbell, FaithHill, Shania Twain, Marty Robbins and other leg-

endary recording artists. Jimtold me he’s been “makin’ aliving” with his guitar sincehe was 16.

Jim and Ann’s Shea andG.G. have been part of theshow since they werebabies; I remember Annwalking down the theateraisle with them when eachwas just a few days old, asJim sang his That’s WhatLittle Kids Do. Shea is 20now and G.G. is 16! They’renow good musicians, veter-an performers. Don’t miss

The Jim Stafford Show. When the curtain goes up,the fun begins!

Evan plays “Ollie” remarkably well, too.Unlike the part of “Little Pete,” which is mostoften quite poignant, “Ollie” is a rascally, too-big-for-his-britches citified fellow who is the butt ofmany jokes. Evan’s “Ollie” is very “visual.” It’sevident he watched a lot of Buster Keaton andLaurel & Hardy with his dad!Evan, now 18, stays busy like hisfather. Besides jobs at Shepherd,he hosts at Cantina Laredo atBranson Landing. Austin, 22,works at Shepherd, is in two rock‘n’ roll bands, and is the Beer andScotch Specialist at Macadoodles!

But the boys can’t hold a can-dle to Dad. Terry, who has a BFA inSpeech and Theater from MSU,has eight jobs, including Shepherd;five characters a day at SilverDollar City; eight within a one-hour show on the VacationChannel; “Deputy Birdy Tweedle”

at Big Cedar; many special appearances, etc.

Terry remembers visiting Branson when hewas five. He went home and “built SilverDollar City” in his backyard: a general store, atree house, a blacksmith shop. He told his

grandpa, “I want to be in Branson. I want to do itall.” Terry is certainly doing it all! Great show,Terry! Thanks for all the laughs.

Another family note — when I started workingat the Gazette in 1990, Dana Lackey was playingSammy Lane. I attended her wedding to DanEmbree, and her baby shower for daughter, Kelly.Dana, who also works in productions at SilverDollar City, now plays “Aunt Molly” and herdaughter Kelly Embree is playing “Sammy!” Andso it goes. “Shepherd family.”

jackets, stuffed animals, jewelry —well, you get the idea.

Besides ziplining and shopping, another nice opportunity is WolfeCreek Photo Safari, which begins(as all the adventures do) with a rideto the top of the mountain in aPinzgauer Swiss Army TroopCarrier, then a guided, gentle down-hill walking tour through Wolfe

Creek Preserve. Plentyof observation decks, too… it’s all fun. Whenguests arrive back at thelodge after their adven-ture, all eyes go to thevideo screens to see theirphotos. We heartily rec-ommend BransonZipline Canopy Tours.Who’s ready to “goagain?!”
