OUR INTERCONNECTEDNESS Back on Sunday, May 3rd, the Gospel for the 5th Sunday of Easter was from John 15:1-8 where Jesus gives the last of the “I Am” sayings. “I AM THE TRUE VINE.” John 15:1 A key aspect of our Christian life that this gospel story emphasizes is the necessity of our INTERCONNECTEDNESS with the rest of our human community. Certainly that idea was one of the many pleasures of our ecumenical service of ordination and installation of Pastor Omar on April 12th. Our connection to each other in our worship community SOTGEEEE begins with abiding in the true vine, our Lord Jesus Christ. To quote Kristen Johnson Largen from “Sundays and Seasons Preaching”: “No one part can exist without the whole; and so this image Jesus uses reminds the disciples that they are not only dependent on his life, but dependent on each other as well– and without the Christian community, no single individual can thrive.” This story also connects us to Holy Communion, as Jesus is the bread and true fruit of the vine. As I was preparing for the May 3rd service, I ran across the following story. I asked you where you were on Sunday, July 20, 1969 at 3:17 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. I was selling Hot Dogs on a Stick somewhere in Ohio that Sunday and left the hot dog stand just in time to enter a commercial building of the county fair and watch this unfold on a television:

“Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first men to walk on the moon in the Apollo 11 space mission. Michael Collins, the third member of the group, was in charge of the command module, essential for their return to Earth. It circled the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin landed. The moon lander touched down at 3:17 Eastern Standard Time, Sunday, July 20, 1969.

Aldrin had brought with him a tiny communion kit, given him by his church, that had a silver chalice and wine vial about the size of the tip of his finger. During the morning he radioed, ‘Houston, this is Eagle . This is the LM pilot speaking. I would like to request a few moments of silence. I would like to invite each person listening in, whoever or wherever he may be, to contemplate for a moment the events of the last few hours, and to give thanks in his own individual way.’ In the radio blackout, he wrote later, I opened the little plastic packages which contained the bread and the wine. I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the wine slowly curled and gracefully came up the side of the cup. Then I read the Scripture, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches.

PASTOR’S PAGES . . . Whosoever abides in me will bring forth much fruit.’ I had intended to read my communion passage back to Earth, but at the last minute Deke Slayton had requested that I not do this. NASA was already embroiled in a legal battle with Madalyn Murray O’Hare, the celebrated opponent of religion, over the Apollo 8 crew reading from Genesis while orbiting the moon at Christmas. I agreed reluctantly . . . Eagle’s metal body creaked, I ate the tiny host and swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for the intelligence and spirit that had brought two young pilots to the Sea of Tranquility. It was interesting for me to think: The very first liquid ever poured on the moon and the very first food eaten there were the communion elements.” Bill Carrell, godandscience.org/apologetics/communion.html. Retrieved November 27, 2008.

I am looking forward to being connected to the Lord Jesus Christ, to you the people of SOTGEEEE and OUR Associate Pastor Omar in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Vacation Bible School, which we have done many times before here at SOTG (but not for the last few years), will take place Monday through Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., July 6-10. This is also the 4th phase of THE SHEPHERD’S TABLE. Pastor Omar will call us together for a planning meeting as soon as the materials arrive.

NEXT NEW MEMBER SUNDAY The next New Member Sunday will be July 19th. If you might be interested in joining and would benefit from a class on Christianity through Lutheran eyes, please let me know (239.687.6580).

I will be on vacation on the Sundays of July 26, where I will be leading worship at the 69th annual Wahlberg reunion, and August 2, 9, and 16. Pastor Omar will be leading us in worship for one service for all, held together in the Sanctuary on those Sundays.

Thank you for your partnership in the glorious Gospel of our Savior, the True Vine, Jesus Christ.

Peace,

Pastor Doug

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” “Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”

“There is no more lovely, friendly and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage.”

“Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime.”

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

“Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.”

“Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.”

Dear Pastor Wahlberg and the People of Shepherd of the Glades, Grace to you and peace! “For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9) Thank you for your generous gift to the ministry and mission of Christ, Cape Coral. Your gift is a sign of our partnership in the gospel, for that we are truly grateful. April has been an emotional one for many of us: celebrating Holy Week and the Great Paschal Triduum for the last time on our campus. We joined together for a banquet giving thanks to God for the ministry we have accomplished here. On April 19 we celebrated our final liturgy in the nave that had served us for almost forty years. After taking leave of the building we processed via cars to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, which will be our home for awhile. Thanks to your partnership we will have the time to heal and begin to refocus our mission and ministry. Blessings! Rev. Dr. William E. Bogholtz Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church Cape Coral, FL

COUNCIL’S CORNER . . . MINUTES OF MAY 12, 2015 MEETING The meeting was called to order by Don Bassett, President. Devotions were conducted by Pastor Omar. April Council meeting minutes were reviewed and accepted.

The next New Member Sunday is scheduled for July 19, 2015. Pastor Omar is completing the paperwork required by the ELCA for the salary grant. He is meeting with those interested in helping with Vacation Bible School and making plans for VBS being held the evenings of July 6 thru 10th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday School classes have started. On Sunday, May 24th, there will be a combined communion in Hanson Hall at which time the Chancel furnishings will be dedicated. (See page 9.) Council reviewed the financial report under the guidance of Tony Zeman, Treasurer. Property reported that the Memorial fountain is being painted with the possibility of coating the stones in the future. The Hooper Irrigation Company has been selected to maintain the sprinkler system. Stewardship reported that the newsletter will report that we operated below our income budget for the year to date. (See page 7.) On September 13, 2015, “God’s Work - Our Hands” Committee will be filling backpacks, coordinating this with the needs of the Shepherd’s Table. November 15, 2015 will be Volunteer Sunday. January 17, 2016 will be Commitment Sunday. Fellowship reported that the “Welcome Back Luncheon” be pot luck. It was also suggested that a collection be taken after each social function held in Hanson Hall. Youth reported that the Easter program was very successful. They are looking forward to VBS in July. (See page 12.) Worship and Music reported that Marilyn Barikmo will coordinate the usher schedule during the summer season. They are trying to coordinate a schedule for next year’s Advent, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve services. The plan is to return to two worship services on Sunday, January 3, 2016. Evangelism reported that an ad has been placed in EnCompass magazine. “Lead On, Lord” reported that pledge cards are coming in. They are looking to possibly find someone to write a grant request to the ELCA Mission Fund to offset some of the cost of our projects. Carole Graesser and Barb Keller have a draft for the “Safe Church Policy”. Council is waiting for an insurance quote from Arthur J. Gallagher & Company. The quote will include wind damage coverage.

Next Council meeting will be June 9, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. Meeting was closed with prayer.

SOTG EN ESPAÑOL . . .

dado.

WITH THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT.

After the resurrection and the events of Easter, Jesus wanted to leave us his

Spirit, that inner master, that force that moves and rises from the inside. The

Spirit is that mysterious presence that allows us to have memory of the events

of God, the memory of our own history of salvation. The Holy Spirit is the

active presence of a God that continues to create, who continues saving, who

communicates and inspires men and women, from his deepest conscience, to

faith, to belief. This is the same energy as on the day of the creation, the

vehemence of the seas and the winds that accompanied the people of Israel

through the wilderness, the heights of Hermon breeze, the devastating strength

of Jericho and the whirlwind that snatched Elijah. That same creative force, that

energy, that is the power of God in action, power that resurrects and arouses

the prophets, who gives sight to the blind and bears witness to the whole

creation. This same spirit has been given us. This same spirit has been among

us. Our response of faith is also the firm conviction that the spirit of Jesus has

the power to renew our lives; revive us every day from routine and mediocrity.

The resurrection of Jesus teaches us to find it worthwhile to live intensely and

overcome the barriers of disease and death itself. His spirit guarantees us that

we are not alone, that our life makes sense when we give ourselves, when we

deliver love, when we die to give life; but above all, when we rise every day to

make way for the joy of living for Christ and doing everything for love.

Congratulations! For April, we took in offerings slightly over budget:

$33,971 vs. $33,800. However, we have hardly made a dent in our four month

SHORTFALL, which is $10,220 as of April 30, 2015. Please prayerfully consider

your response to this need. Even though many of us have returned north, we

need to remember Shepherd of the Glades in our monthly giving plans. Even a

little would go a long way in achieving the programs to which we feel the Holy

Spirit calling. There is Vacation Bible School coming up in July and a new

project for the Shepherd’s Table to be held on September 13th as part of the

churchwide “God’s Work, Our Hands” call to service. Thank you for your

participation in this community of faith.

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father who was a

minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his

study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up,

study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about

a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss

use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said,

"Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've

studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut." The young man

waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that.

You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and

even Jesus had long hair!", to which his father replied, "Yes, you're right, and

they also WALKED everywhere they went!"
