The Messenger The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Olney, Maryland July 2010 FREEDOMS AND BLESSINGS July 4, 1776 was a memorable day in the history of the United States of America. On that day, the founding fathers of our nation declared their independence from England and English rule. Each year we pause to remember the freedoms we enjoy and give thanks for all those brave men and women from 1776 to this date who have risked their lives for the sake of freedom and independence. We enjoy the freedom of religion, of gathering in public, of oppression from the government or any other agency. We have the freedom of electing our national, state and local leaders into office. It is our privilege and duty to vote whenever we have the opportunity. History teaches us that national apathy has destroyed numerous empires and America can also flounder and fail if we citizens do not exercise our freedoms in a responsible way. Not only are we citizens of perhaps the greatest nation in the history of mankind, but we are also citizens of the Kingdom of God! Because of that citizenship, we enjoy countless freedoms and blessings, like the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. These freedoms and blessings come to us at a great cost – not on our part, but on the part of our gracious Savior Jesus who offered himself up to death as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Even though we can never adequately express our thanks to Christ, we can by the power of the Holy Spirit live each day more and more as a grateful child of God. Because Christ has redeemed us to be children of God and heirs of salvation, we have the privilege and responsibility to give evidence of this precious freedom through our words and actions. Jesus affects everything in our lives – relationships, use of money, time and talents – so that we can live daily not in order to gain salvation, but rather as a free and joyous response because of what God has done for us in the Person of Jesus Christ. Enjoy your freedoms as a citizen of this great land and as a citizen of the Kingdom of God and let your life show it! To God be the glory! In His Service, Pastor Pat

FREEDOMS AND BLESSINGS

July 4, 1776 was a memorable day in the history of the United States of America. On that day, the founding fathers of our nation declared their independence from England and English rule. Each year we pause to remember

the freedoms we enjoy and give thanks for all those brave men and women from 1776 to this date who have risked their lives for the sake of freedom and

independence.

In His Service,

Pastor Pat

Summer Worship Schedule

We will be having ONE SERVICE at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday during the months of July and August. Following each service (except on July 4) there will be a fellowship time in the Narthex. Again as we did last year, each Elder and their families (listed on the Elders’ bulletin board by the offices in the Administrative hallway) were asked to bring a food item to share on one of the Sundays in July and August. Mark your calendars now, and please plan to attend.

Summer Singers

All are welcome! Even if you do not normally sing in the choir, you are welcome to join the Summer Singers. Simply meet in the front of the nave at 9:30 a.m. to rehearse. We will sing during the offering at the 10:00 a.m. service. If you are in town, please join us. July 4 & 18, and August 8 & 22 are the dates we will be singing.

Day Trippers We will take a tour of the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Northeast on July 21. Meet at church at 9:30 a.m. The gardens have a plethora of rare water

lilies and lotuses in cultivated ponds as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna. The park also contains the only remaining tidal marsh in Washington. Take a trip to the Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville, PA to see “Unnecessary Farce” a comedy about two incompetent but earnest and honest cops who are convinced that their stakeout will be their big break. Tickets for the August 4 matinee at 2:30 p.m. will be about $30. Leave church at 10:00 a.m. for lunch in Thurmont, MD. Please reserve your seat by July 1 so tickets can be ordered. Please contact Dorothy Hughes (301-437-8906).

The Game Night CARE Groups meets monthly on the third Friday. We gather for fellowship, food and fun – and play a couple of games each time. Newcomers are always welcome! If you are interested in joining us, call Andy Carpenter (301-774-8298).

The Good Shepherd Book Club

will not be meeting during July or August

so you’ll have plenty of time to read:

“Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet”

by Jamie Ford (2008). This book provides and incredible look into the life of the U.S. Japanese families that were sent to internment camps during World War II. It is told through the eyes of Henry Lee, a Chinese American who is friends with a young Japanese American female student during this period. The Book Club will meet again on Sunday,

September 14, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. sharp

in the Family Life Wing

Come with or without food as there is always plenty for everyone.

Lunch Bunch will NOT meet in July and August. The group will resume getting together in September.

That date will be

Tuesday, September 14.

Please Help Chase Shelter

HELP FEED THE HOMELESS! Good Shepherd has been providing meals on a quarterly basis to the Chase Shelter, and bag lunches to the Men’s Emergency Shelter in Rockville for 20 years. Our next opportunity to do this is July 31, 2010. This service project requires the work of many hands, and we are appreciative of all who have contributed in the past. Your volunteer opportunities include:

1. Provide a hot casserole for the Saturday supper. NOTE: The casserole does not need to be home made; grocery store lasagna is quite fine. Please bring the casserole to the kitchen in the family life wing on or prior to 3 p.m. on July 31. You can bring a warm casserole on the day of delivery, or bring one to be heated prior to the date of delivery (just be sure to label it for Chase Shelter). You should prepare the casserole in a disposable dish as it will NOT be returned to you.

2. Please sign up for other supplies

needed on the list and bring 3 p.m. on July 31 and label items for Chase Shelter. These supplies include cold cuts, cheese (not individually wrapped), bread, drinks, fruit, snacks, brownie mix, etc. (the list of needs varies each time so be sure to check the bulletin board)

It is important to sign up because we purchase items that we do not have and this becomes costly. You can also inform Ric Zakour of your intentions via phone or e-mail at the address below. Last, but certainly not least, on Saturday, July 31, we will be meeting at 3 p.m. to prepare everything, make brownies, assemble lunches pack and load the items for delivery. It takes about 1-1 ½ hours and is usually a lot of fun. If you can participate

or have any questions, please contact Ric Zakour at 301-869-1089 or at [email protected]. Students who participate are eligible to receive service hour credit for school (bring your forms with you). Your dedication to this outreach ministry is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all who have contributed both their time and donations in the past. One more thing, I am looking for someone to replace me in leading this ministry. Anybody who is interested should give me a call. It is not hard, but does require attention to detail.

COMMISSIONING OF SERVANT EVENT

PARTICIPANTS

Good Shepherd’s participants in this summer’s Appalachian Servant Event, to be held in Ashville, North Carolina from July 9-21, will be commissioned on July 4 at the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Those participating are: Amanda Bulgarelli, Debbie Harman, SeDell Harman, Brianna Hoffman, Sarah Mullen, Joey Quinn, and Pastor Pat. Please keep these folks in your thoughts and prayers as they help those less fortunate. The Servant Event experience richly rewards those participating with a renewed faith in Christ.

The deadline for the August newsletter is Sunday, July 18. Please leave your articles in the newsletter mailbox or email to [email protected] Thanks!

and will continue through the school year.

Summer Suppers Summer Suppers will continue every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. over the summer. Make sure Susan has your cell phone number so you can get the text message invitations every week! Send Susan a text with your phone number so she can add you to the list! 301-367-7967.

Vacation Bible School Follow-up During the week of June 28 – July 2, thirty-nine (39) kids came to PLANET ZOOM where they became bold bee-lievers zipping, zapping and zooming for Jesus. They learned that just as each bee in a hive has a specific role, we too have a role to play in God’s kingdom by bringing the life-saving message of Jesus to others. On Thursday evening the children are treating parents, family and friends to a musical presentation led by Dawn McCann. VBS teachers also present summaries of what they have covered in class each day. Many thanks to an enthusiastic staff of adults and youth who made this year’s VBS a hit.

Parking Lot Paving PAVING of the church parking lot will begin, weather permitting, on July 6. The

work should be completed in two days and then the areas will need two days to cure. This means that from Tuesday, July 6, through Friday, July 9, no vehicles will be allowed in the driveways or parking lots. However, on July 8 and 9 you may park on Olney Mill Road and walk to the building. Staff only should access the building on July 6 and 7. Thank you for your cooperation.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS for transporting the donated clothes to the ICC.

Dear Good Shepherd, Thank you! Thank you! During Sierra's recent spinal cord surgery and recovery, we appreciated all your prayers, meals, gifts, cards, phone calls, texts and emails. Your offers to help really meant a lot to us. Pastor and Elise - a special thank you for the visits and sitting with Sierra so that we could get lunch. Bob Gill and Elsie Stevick - thank you for coordinating and getting all the meals for us. MOMS group - thank you for the yummy food and babysitting. It really helped to have food here for whoever was home with our other children while we were with Sierra at Children's Hospital. And thank you to all the children who made cards for Sierra - Shepherd's Care Children's Center students and LCGS Sunday school students as well as many others. Pastor can vouch for the wonderful way the cards cheered up Sierra and made her hospital room happier. Your generous gifts to help keep Sierra occupied and distracted were much appreciated. After so many days in the hospital and then stuck at home, they really came in handy. We can't name everyone here who helped but please know that we appreciate every kindness. Sierra felt much loved. Thank you, Angela & Anthony Hoffman

Brianna, Dominic, Sierra and Marissa

Don Pohlmann has yet again demonstrated his skills when it comes to repairs and maintenance around the church. If you have not noticed the new

coat racks at each entrance to the Narthex, please check them out. Don assembled them and was capably assisted by a fellow church member, who wants to remain anonymous, during the installation process. Don, for all you quietly do behind the scenes to make Good Shepherd a more attractive facility, we thank you!

Cell Phone vs. Bible

• I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like our cell phones?

• What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

• What if we turned back to get it if we forgot it?

• What if we flipped through it several times a day?

• What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

• What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?

• What if we gave it to kids as a gift?

• What if we used it as we traveled? • What if we used it in case of an

emergency? • What if we upgraded it to the

latest version?

It is just something to think about!
