ATFT’s statement of purpose is “to empower, develop and inspire black females, physically impaired and black individuals, as well as black-owned companies, and grow the South African Film, Television, Animation and Transmedia Industries“.

ATFT believes South African filmmakers need to increase their networks of international contacts, which will enable them to conduct business according to international standards and develop strong business models for their companies.

South Africa has a vibrant film industry that is growing in reputation and is competitive internationally. Local and foreign filmmakers are taking

advantage of the country’s diverse, unique locations, as well as low production costs and favourable exchange rate, which makes it more affordable to make a movie here than in Europe or the US.

The jewel in the industry’s crown is Tsotsi, Gavin Hood’s gritty drama about a young gangster in Soweto, South of Johannesburg, which won an Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2006.

In 2010, District 9 - an action-packed science-fiction movie about a sub-class of aliens forced to live in the slums of Johannesburg - was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best picture.

South Africa also has a growing reputation as a producer of award-winning local content, such as Oscar-nominated Yesterday, the story of the struggles of an HIV-positive mother, and U-Carmen eKhayalitsha, a Xhosa-language film which won the Golden Bear award at the 2005 Berlin Film Festival.

Documentary filmmaker Francois Verster’s A Lion’s Tale won a non-fiction Emmy in 2006, recognised for its “most outstanding cultural and artistic programming”.

Building on South Africa’s reputation for quality and creative film making, a string of successful big budget international productions have been filmed here, including Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film; Blood Diamond with Leonardo DiCaprio; and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus.

Opportunities abound, with the makers of movies, commercials and other productions being attracted by South Africa’s highly skilled film crews and technicians, excellent technical capacity and infrastructure - as well as the good weather.

Our Mission ATFT is pleased to present its delegation of emerging filmmakers from South Africa to Sheffield Doc Fest 2014. ATFT, together with the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Wesgro, hosts the South African Indies Stand at Sheffield Doc Fest 2014 and has created this catalogue of companies and productions from South Africa in attendance at Sheffield Doc Fest 2014.

Our Statement of Purpose“To empower, develop and inspire black females, physically impaired and black individuals, as well as black-ownedcompanies, and grow the South African Film, Television, Animation and Transmedia Industries”.

ATFT’s Highest Aspiration“An overall growth of 200% of South African content on local and international platforms of which 80% is made and sold by black females, physically impaired and black individuals, and black-owned companies by end 2018”

t his is a story about black nurses in South Africa, who from 1908 (when Cecilia Makiwane became the first African woman to qualify as a

nurse) were part of a highly aspirational and respected profession, and whose need increased proportionally with industrialisation and the commercial development of South African cities. Nursing was one of the few professions available to black women before apartheid, which meant that selection to training colleges was highly competitive and selective. Nurses were a crucial professional and cultural link between African traditional values and Western education and development, as many Africans were mistrustful of western medicine and norms. The past twenty years have seen a near collapse of the South African nursing profession. This documentary aims to celebrate the past

accomplishments, while interrogating how things could have gone so terribly wrong as to result in a once lauded profession being one of the most reviled in South Africa.

All the Kings Horses and all the Kings Men is a story of a modern day King,KgotshiMakgoba, in search of his ancestor’s head. His great

grandfather, King Makgoba was assassinated in 1895 by a boer leader who took the kings head to Pretoria as proof of his death. We access the story through the new kings’ daughter, a modern day, city life, media professional living in Johannesburg who is caught between her modern life and her roots in rural South Africa.

The story unravels as she visits her rural home to find it in turmoil under her father’s rule. The province of Limpopo has been riddled with chaos and corruption for decades. Her father, King Kgotshiis convinced that the turmoil being experienced by the province is due to the fact that King Makgoba’s head is still missing and that it must be reunited with his body in order to bring peace back to the province.

The community of Limpopo had been paying homeage to the head of a mummy in the Pretoria Museum for 25 years only to discover that the head they were visiting was that of an Egyptian mummy and not the head of King Makgoba. This absurd discovery adds a macarb sense of humour to the search asMaphala, through duty and a love for her father, sets outon a journey to Germany and back to South Africa to discover the location of the missing head.

CHILD OF THE REVOLUTIONNayanaya Pictures

Xoliswa Sithole escaped Apartheid South Africa as a child and grew up amidst the freedom fighters of Zimbabwe, witnessing the euphoria

of revolution, but she left as the country descended into disarray.

Now, in this powerful, moving documentary she returns to Zimbabwe to relive her story and investigate what happened to those dreams of freedom.

This film attempts to pierce the static obscuring the Zimbabwean story. Zimbabweans themselves are given the space to tell their story; a story celebrating 30 years of independence.

And it is in walking with our characters from colonialism through the liberation war to the challenges of post-colonial Independence to the present crisis ignited by President Mugabe’s attempts at land redistribution. This historic journey helps us understand more clearly where the country

finds itself today. If we are able to make sense of events

unfolding in Zimbabwe, we will be able to make sense of our own struggles. For as we recount the Zimbabwean story we are really recounting the story of Africans and the rest of the world.

One winter’s night, Nokuthula Zulu-Xaba’s husband is shot outside their home. Thus begin her nightmare, as instead of helping her through this

hard time, his family takes the opportunity to repossess all their belongings through their cultural “right”, leaving her and her son with nothing. In the clash between modernity and traditional culture, the biggest losers are women who have lost their husbands. On their husbands’ passing - unprotected by the state and vulnerable to patriarchal traditions – these women often find themselves battling in-laws who blame them for the deaths of their sons, and come to enforce traditional edicts that states everything a man owns belongs to his “original” family. Many women find themselves out on the street with their children. Some traditions force the widow to marry her late husband’s male relative so he can ‘take care of his late brother’s estate’.

We relive Nokuthula’s ordeal as she helps a young widow currently going through

MA’NGOYI: MOTHER OF BLACK RESISTANCEFort Films

As a descendant of a fighter of great resilience in a war against Apartheid, I examine freedom; angle by angle and ask the most important question: Are

we truly free? Freedom has always been seen as a

destination in South Africa, something that was fought for and ultimately attained. I find it to be quite a restless place and have always questioned the divinity of freedom. Ma’Ngoyi’s influence is still felt to this very day, as each year that passes by women stand in remembrance of one of the greatest demonstrations of the struggle of our time when she orchestrated a march of 20 000 women to The Union Buildings in protest against the pass laws that existed then. The 9th of August has since been commemorated as South African Women’s Day in accordance to this cause. In the turbulent years of the 1950’s two different forces merged to plunge Lilian Ngoyi, a hard-working widow, into the very heart of the liberation struggle in South Africa.

In 1994, South Africa became a democratic country, we were “free at last” but even twenty years on, the disparities and inequality in South Africa still, constantly gnaw at you. With the story of Ma’Ngoyi, we take freedom and dissect it. We look at the resilience of Ma’Ngoyi and what she represented and juxtapose it with my ‘freedom’ to reveal the stark differences, three generations later.

RAIN IN A DEAD MAN’S FOOTPRINTS

the older people say that when you live, you leave footprints in the sand and when you die the rain washes those footprints away. The question is, what then do we leave

behind? Rain in a Dead Man’s Footprints is a story of two men from a small mining village in Namaqualand who surpass the racial, gender and cultural constraints that defined their existence through the creation of Jazzart, a leading contemporary dance company in South Africa. As a gay multi-racial couple they were exiled in the 1970s from the community in Namaqualand. After thirty years of dance development in the City of Cape Town, the two men are asked to leave once again. As a result, they have decided to return to the old mining town to train underprivileged youth in their new makeshift studio. Through the story of Byron, an ex alcoholic, we see how their legacy will live on through the next generation of dancers. By weaving dance memories of the past and the circumstances of the present, the

documentary follows the rehearsal process of a new production to be performed on a national stage. The staged production follows the true-life narratives of our characters as they attempt to reveal unanswered questions through live performance. Rain in a Dead Man’s Footprints is the story of overcoming all obstacles to follow an unconventional dream. A legacy that will never be washed away for as long as they live in the memories of those whose lives they have touched.

Stephen Brown, a modern Sherlock Holmes residing in England, is called to investigate a series of enigmatic murders occurring in small town

Prince Albert, South Africa. The killer gruesomely murders his victims, and then extracts their internal organs for a reason unknown to many - muti.

Nozi Mzomba, a top notch local detective is to assist inspector Brown with the case, in light of some of its African content. Brown defies this move, and uses generic protocol to uncover the mysteries of the killings. But his information serves him ill. The case gets nowhere and soon, Nozi is there to shape things for him. She tells him the case is not “typical” and therefore, unorthodox methods would need to be used. She says they would need to see a “Sangoma”, a traditional sage in matter like these for guidance. The killings escalate. The town’s mayor panics and at the last minute, Stephen gives Nozi a try.

THE AFRICAN NATIVE CHOIR JUBILEE TOUR, 1891-’93

this is the phenomenal story of the African Native Choir, which was assembled by an erstwhile promoter Mr. Balmer in 1891 in South Africa among missionary-educated

blacks, specifically to perform for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee celebrations. They performed for two and a half years in many parts of England, Scotland and Ireland.

While initially excited about the prospects of touring England (a truly rare experience), once they arrived the group was constantly frustrated by the blatant racism, and jealousy among the group even leads to fantastic charges of witchcraft. This documentary aims to tell the story of the African Native Choir’s historic musical tour of England: through exploring the physical trail they followed, as well as the group’s the dramatic emotional highs and lows, as told first hand through the most celebrated member of the tour: Katie Manye (Makanya) as told in the book “The Calling of Katie Makanya”, and supported

with compelling archive photographs and newspaper articles.

The tour was not particularly successful, but two of the women singing in the group grew to leave an indelible mark on South Africa. Katie went on to become an assistant to Dr. McCord and helped him when he founded the McCord Hospital in Durban, while Charlotte (Maxeke) went on to become an educator and an ANC activist after further education in the United States of America (Tuskegee and Wilberforce).

Y -Revolution – The story of YFM:The struggle didn’t end, it just changed. Set against the birth of a new democracy, this is the

inspiring tale of how a group of young, ambitious South Africans came together despite incredible odds and intense media skepticism to launch the country’s very first independent black youth radio station. The ultimate symbol of freedom of speech, YFM became so much more than just an ordinary radio station. It gave a voice to the youth of Jozi when nobody else would even dare. It gave artists, DJs, producers and entrepreneurs the confidence to reach for their dreams. And it gave Kwaito – a new music genre a home, a face and an audience. The vanguard of South African youth culture YFM, harnessed the raw energy of Jozi’s streets and turned it into something honest and beautiful - a feat no other has been able to achieve since.

A ‘The Journey’ is a 13-part documentary series looking for a sales agent / distributor, as it profiles the many different

journey’s that MK soldiers took during their fight against apartheid. It is no secret that South Africa did not win this fight alone, we received a lot of help through training, equipment and even weaponry, from other countries, arming our soldiers to fight for freedom.

We will travel across the continent and beyond, visiting the different nations that supported us, and walking the path that our soldiers did many years before, in order to remind us of the sacrifices and the contributions that not only our soldiers made, but the many different countries as well.

This series will be a remembrance of the sacrifices made in order to keep us as South Africans humble to the fact that 20

years of democracy was a collective effort and we need to appreciate those who helped us when they could have easily turned their backs. This series will be available as individual documentaries or as a collective of (13 parts x 60 minutes).

Personal Profile: I currently live in the city of Johannesburg after moving from Cape Town as a teenager in the early 1990’s. After completing

a 2 year diploma in Copywriting from the Vega, Advertising School in Johannesburg in 2000, I began working as a copywriter, having been obsessed with becoming one since the age of 12.

I’ve worked at number of advertising agencies including TBWA Hunt/Lascaris in both Johannesburg and Cape Town and DraftFCB in Johannesburg. My work has been recognized at a number of advertising awards and festivals celebrating creative excellence including the Vuka, Pendoorings and Loerie Awards – in the Virals, Activation and the TV and Film categories.

production company and is rooted in telling original South African stories. 4 years ago, Thato Moatlhodi met with Suzanne du Toit in an advertising agency called TBWA Hunt Lascaris. Since then the two have been extending their advertising and marketing skills to filmmaking. In South Africa, the two have identified a gap, in that the focus on their story telling will move seamlessly from concept to production and with the packaging to match.

Y Revolution, The Story of YFM / p9

Personal Profile: I am an aspirant film maker, with an extensive background in advertising having worked for TBWA Hunt Lascaris and Metropolitan

Repubic, two of the worlds’ greatest agencies. I want to start exploring the world of film and do great work.My ambitions lie in creating stories that transcend cultural divides.

My experience is centred around marketing and advertising and I plan on extending my skills to filmmaking. My journey in the advertising world has been quite fulfilling because a lot of knowledge and learning is absorbed from storyboarding, animation and live action commercials. These all form puzzles that I can fit in the process of film making but definitely don’t serve as direct reflections of what film is about. From here onwards the vision is true story-telling with an edge, especially when it comes to documentaries.
